Passage 1
(24-25高二下·天津北辰·期中)阅读表达
There are certain places on the planet where you can feel a connection with a loved one. That’s the way my mother and I felt about Little Italy in New York City. The very streets brought us back to our roots that were planted before either of us was born. It’s the spot where, on a hot July night in 1906,my grandfather Tony was born to immigrant (移民) parents. “I was born on the corner of Mott Street,” he often said.
Last year, he passed away. My mother was heartbroken. I tried my best to console her. I often accompanied her and took her out for dinner. One Sunday, I invited her to our favorite restaurant. I found a parking space on Mott Street. We only had to walk down the street to reach the restaurant which was around the corner. After walking for several minutes, we found the weather broke. The wind from the storm whipped (抽打)our faces. The storm came. There was no time to return to our car.
“Come on,” my mother said. And she grabbed my arm and pulled me into an old tenement(公寓大楼) house, which was, surprisingly, unlocked. When we entered the living room, something struck my mother and she said, “Do you think this could be the building where Grandpa lived?” She took out a pen and wrote down the number.
When we went back home, my mother took out an old box. She handed me a piece of paper which turned out to be my grandfather’s birth certificate. It was the same building. With tears in her eyes, she said, “Grandpa didn’t leave us and he looked out for us.”
Was it a miracle or a coincidence? I didn’t have a definite answer but I would rather believe it was a miracle. When Grandpa Tony was alive, he always did his best to protect us. Though he passed away, his spirit was still with us and performed the same duty. I believe that he is our guardian angel and his love will be always surrounding us.

1.考查细节理解。根据第一段“The very streets brought us back to our roots that were planted before either of us was born. It’s the spot where, on a hot July night in 1906, my grandfather Tony was born to immigrant (移民)parents.(这些街道让我们追溯到在我们出生之前就已扎根于此的根源。在 1906 年 7 月的一个炎热夜晚,我的祖父托尼出生在移民父母家中,这里就是那个地方)”可知,作者和纽约小意大利有特殊联系是因为那是她祖父的出生地。故填 Because it was her grandfather’s birthplace. 或 Because it was where her grandfather was born.
2.考查词句猜测。根据第二段“My mother was heartbroken. I tried my best to console her.(我母亲很伤心。我尽力去 console 她)”可知,因为母亲伤心,所以 “我” 应是尽力去安慰她,由此可推知 “console”意思是“安慰”,与“comfort”意思相近。故填 Comfort.
3.考查细节理解。根据文章第二段 “After walking for several minutes, we found the weather broke. The wind from the storm whipped (抽打)our faces. The storm came. Passage 2
(23-24高二下·天津·期中)When Tsinghua University’s new freshmen arrived on campus last August, the first question they were faced with at the registration desk was “Did you come alone or with your parents?” According to statistics, we know that more than half of the 539 students came alone. In a letter to freshmen this year, Chen Jining, the president of Tsinghua University, encouraged them to “start this new adventure by standing on your own two feet.”
To help freshmen grow up, some universities have thought of new methods. At Tsinghua, for example, freshmen need to register and find their dormitory by themselves. The process requires two to three hours, during which volunteers take parents on a tour of the campus. At Zhejiang University, a banner (横幅) hanging in the information center says “Parents let go please; let us guide your children.” Lu Guodong, dean (系主任) of undergraduate studies at Zhejiang University, coined the slogan. “The slogan is for parents. Often parents like to do things or make decisions for their children. In their eyes children never grow up,” said Lu.
A girl arrived at the railway station with her luggage and looked around for her university’s welcome team. She was Jin Hongting, 19, from Hebei province and would study industry business administration at Beijing Union University. When asked why she came alone, Jin said: “There’s no need to bother my parents to come with me. It only takes four hours from my hometown to Beijing.”
Sometimes, however, the distance between university and home is so great that many parents are too worried to let their children travel alone. To reassure (使放心) parents, Renmin University of China introduced a new method. It asked senior students to go back to their hometown and accompany freshmen back to the campus. This helps freshmen get used to living independently.

故答案是:Invented/Created。

In Sichuan Province, long-time resident French artist Vincent Cazeneuve, is integrating traditional Chinese lacquerware (漆器) skills with techniques taken from Western modern art into his creations.
Born in Toulouse, Vincent has been living in southwest China for more than a decade. With the influence of French artists Jean Dunand and Gaston Suisse, his journey to unravel the secrets of Chinese lacquerware and his fascination for lacquer art started. “I studied their artworks and often wondered why they used Chinese lacquer. In those days, lacquer could not be found in France.” said the artist.
Native to Asia, lacquer trees are planted and tapped for their liquid. It is almost impossible to find lacquer trees in Europe. So, instead of continually transporting lacquer back to France, Vincent chose to send himself to China.
Having explored his connections with lacquer over the years, the artist also learned a range of techniques, which he integrated into his own artworks. To dive deep into the art of lacquerware, Vincent traveled to Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture (自治州) in Sichuan Province, where lacquer craftsmanship is famous. In fact, he actually met two lacquerware craftsmen, who taught him almost everything they knew.
“I used to know about lacquerware of Yi just by looking at it. But I had never seen the Yi people before. I have never heard their language. I've never seen their villages. It’s only when I came here that I felt the power of their culture.” said Vincent.
This field trip gave the artist new inspiration for his exhibition. After seeing Vincent’s exhibition, Liu Guanzhong, a professor at the School of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University said, “What he presents is China in his eyes. Passage 1
(24-25高二下·天津河西·期中)阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
During the years working in Peacekeeping Force, I was sent abroad. As a senior analyst, my workdays were routinely twelve to sixteen hours long. Like all the old soldiers, we looked forward to receiving mails from home.
We soldiers received many “To any service member” mails, which were sent by the general public in our mother country to soldiers far away from home, as an expression of support. I never took any of those letters, since I wrote to my wife on a daily basis, as well as occasionally writing notes to my daughter Jenny’ s classroom, and I didn’t feel I had time to write to anyone else.
After five or six months of hearing from the mail — announcing the availability of “To any service member” mail, I decided to take a few of the letters. Because I planned, as time permitted, to drop them a line telling them “Thanks” for their support.
I picked up three letters, and placed them in my cargo pocket and went back to work. Over the next week or so, I started responding to the letters. When it came time to answer the third letter, I noticed it had no return address, but a postmark from my hometown, which made me think of home. I had missed spending important festivals with my family. Homesickness seized me.
I opened the card and started to read the letter attached, which was a short one. About the third or fourth sentence down, it read, “My daddy is a soldier over there, if you see him tell him hi and I love and miss him.” This statement really touched me and made me miss my family even more. Looking down to the name of the sender, I sat in silence as tears filled my eyes.
21.Who will usually write “To any service member” mails to the author? (No more than 8 words)
22.Why did the author decide to answer some “To any service member” mails later? (No more than 10 words)

22.考查细节理解题。根据文章第三段“After five or six months of hearing from the mail — announcing the availability of “To any service member” mail, I decided to take a few of the letters. Because I planned, as time permitted, to drop them a line telling them “Thanks” for their support.(在连续五六个月听到有“致任何军人”的信件到来的消息后,我决定拿几封看看。因为我想等有时间的时候,给他们写几句“谢谢”的话,感谢他们的支持。)”可知,作者决定回复一些信件是因为想等有时间的时候给他们写几句“谢谢”的话,感谢他们的支持。故答案为:To tell them “Thanks” for their support.

Only by maintaining peace can we ensure global stability, foster development and promote cooperation among nations for a better future.
Passage 2
(24-25高二下·天津南开·期中)阅读表达
When Brantley Harrison and her family rescued a tiny injured squirrel back, then released her back into the wild, they didn’t expect to ever see her again. Nine years later, however, little Bella, as they named it, still comes to visit them almost every day - as long as snacks are provided, of course.
As a baby, the terrible attack made by an owl (猫头鹰) left Bella near death, she was carefully taken in by the Greenville County, South Carolina family, and raised by them alongside three other squirrels named Larry, Curly, and Moe. Bella stayed with the Harrisons until she had healed successfully thanks to a regular diet of fruit, nuts, and baby food, and was ready to jump on the trees in the forest. The sweet squirrel never goes too far from her adopted home, though, and stops by to say hello whenever she can, no matter how much time has passed.
“Bella sits right at the front door waiting for someone to notice she has come by for a visit. If no one notices her, she will jump over to the dining room window to wait for someone to see her,” Brantley told The Dodo. The little lady just isn’t ready to part with the family that succored her life. Whenever she stops by, she asks for nothing more than a handful of nuts.
What is the most amazing part? A few years after Bella’s original stay at the Harrison house, she found her way back to them with an injured foot-and a belly full of babies-spending another few months of recovering. “It was truly amazing to watch the baby I raised raise her own babies,” Brantley said. Passage 3
(24-25高二下·天津和平·期中)Nothing succeeds like confidence. When you are truly confident, it radiates from you like sunlight, and attracts success to you like a magnet (磁铁). Besides, those who are self-confident can in turn inspire confidence in others: their audience, their peers, their bosses, their customers, and their friends. And gaining the confidence of others is one of the key ways in which a self-confident person finds success.
So how can we build a sense of self-confidence and prepare ourselves on the way to success?
First, do what you believe to be right, even if others mock or criticize you for it. Believe in yourself and believe that you can do it under any circumstances. The belief keeps you searching for answers, which means that pretty soon you will get them.
Second, be willing to take risks by going the extra miles to achieve better results. In this case, mistakes cannot be avoided. But don’t hesitate to admit your mistakes, and learn from them.
Next, work hard to settle the problems in order to cover up your mistakes before anyone notices. Building self-confidence is readily achievable, as long as you have the determination to carry things through. And what’s even better is that the things you’ll d to build self-confidence will also build success — after all, your confidence will come from real, solid achievement.
As you sow, sow will reap. With your perseverance and improvement, you are getting closer to success. At this stage, wait for others to congratulate you on your accomplishments and compliments graciously, which will promote you to gain further success.
Self-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, and it is no wonder that so many people struggle to find it. Self-confidence really can be learned and built on. Besides, whether you’re working on your own self-confidence or building the confidence of people around you, it’s well worth the effort!

These relatively unexplored places are so rare these days and hold the very fundamentals of exploration, which attract me. MacDonald and her group had to face many challenges on their journey. Except for the dirt and discomfort, the travelers also had to deal with the intense heat, violent winds and even dangerous sandstorms. “I was out taking photographs and within minutes, the wind increased to more than 100 miles an hour,” MacDonald said. “I thought my skin was going to be torn off because of the rain and blowing sand. It felt like sandpaper on my skin. I have never experienced winds that strong before. There was once a time when I wanted to give up.”
She dealt with the harsh conditions by trying not to travel in the middle of the day and wore headscarves to protect herself from the sun and blowing sand. “The weather definitely dictates when and where you travel,” said MacDonald. Everyone has got two personalities — the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don’t show your secret personality when you’re awake because you can control your behaviour, but when you’re asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night, of course, people frequently change their position. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.
● If you go to sleep on your back, you’re a very open person. You normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don’t like to upset people, so you never express your real feelings. You’re quite shy and you aren’t very confident.
● If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive person. You worry a lot and you’re always easily upset. You’re very stubborn, but you aren’t very ambitious. You usually live for today not for tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.
●If you sleep on curling (蜷缩) up, you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you’re often defensive. You’re shy and you don’t normally like meeting people. You prefer to stay alone.
●If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well-balanced personality. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You’re usually careful. You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don’t often get depressed. You always say what you think even if it annoys people.

Jenifer, who is 10 years old, has been training in the athletic centre since 2014. She enjoys taking part in the 800 meters, 1,500 meters and cross-country racing events. Early in 2016, Jenifer competed in the state championships in all of these three events and qualified for the national competitions.
Jennifer is enthusiastic about her experience in the national competitions. She said that the most exciting thing for her was meeting other athletes from around Australia, including a new friend named Jessica. According to Jennifer, when she participated at state level, the bar was raised. “The national competitions are really hard; it’s harder to win,” she says.
Project worker Lisa notes that competing has had a positive impact on the young athlete. “Jennifer’ s participation in national competitions has enriched her life educationally, culturally and socially,” she says.
Jennifer’s mother is her inspiration. Jennifer is very grateful to her mother for the sacrifices she has made to enable Jennifer to train. In order to motivate her and accompany her to the weekly training session, Jennifer’s mother has to regularly give up work opportunities.
Vincent has explored a path: the ideas of a modern artist, but rooting the ancient skills in modern life. He finds new soil for an old seed to bloom into a new flower.”
