Recently whenever I turned on my computer or my mobile phone, news about the great effect of Hurricane Harvey(哈维飓风)on thousands of people caught my eye.I saw many unfortunate events. However, there was also lots of bright news that showed the goodness of mankind. As a reporter,I reported many human-interest stories when doing my job. That’s why the story about the guys in the bakery(面包店)caught my eye.
When the workers at a Mexican bakery chain in Houston were trapped inside the building for two days, they didn’t sit there feeling sorry for themselves. They used their time wisely after flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. While waiting for the eventual rescue that came on Monday morning, the four workers decided to make as many loaves of bread as possible for people around the neighborhood. They talked to their manager about their plan over the phone and the manager agreed.
The flood water rose in the street outside. They took advantage of their emergency power supply to bake bread. They used more than 4,200 pounds of flour(面粉)to create hundreds of loaves and sheets of sweet bread.Although the water kept rising, they continued baking to help more people.By the time the manager managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that they took the loaves to lots of emergency centers across the city for people affected by the floods.
The store manager,Brian Alvarado, told The Independent,“They’ve done more than they should have done. And what they had done has lit a light for people.I feel lucky to have them work in the bakery.”
Whenever a disaster occurs, nobody should feel forlorn.Instead,we should stay hopeful and take positive action to save ourselves and help others. Our acts of kindness will make a big difference to the people in the world as well as the world itself.

A.He found them lucky.
B.He was proud of them.
C.They were experienced.

When Gijsbert Cirkel coached his son’s soccer team,he remembers the kids resting under a tree after a game. They put their feet in the air and cried,“Our feet are hot!” Their games had been played on artificial turf(人工草坪),which can get so hot that it burns. To address this problem,Cirkel and his Dutch research team developed a new water-storage system that cools the turf by using rainwater evaporation(蒸发).
A hydrologist,Cirkel studies the water cycle. His team’s new system collects and stores rainwater about 8.5 cm below a playing field. As this water evaporates,it cools the playing surface, similar to how sweat cools our bodies.Although natural grass is cooler, the new system does a better job of keeping the turf temperature down.On a hot June day, regular artificial grass reaches 62.2℃!That is 25℃ hotter than natural grass, while the new system is only 1.7℃ warmer than the real grass.
The new turf system looks like a sandwich. The artificial grass goes on top, followed by filler material, with the rainwater storage below it.The team included a waterproof liner and used fiber(纤维) filler instead of rubber to improve performance.Plastic blocks in the storage area have holes for water flow.
The researchers built four small fields in Amsterdam for outdoor tests—two with the new system topped by artificial turf and one with real grass, while the last had standard artificial turf without water storage. The new system stored more rainwater and significantly cooled the surface.
“The new system is a good effort and a good step forward,” says Vasilis Vasilou,a researcher at the Yale School of Public Health in New Haven,Conn. He likes the new idea, even though it doesn’t solve all the problems with artificial turf, for example, artificial grass has harmful chemicals, which are bad for players.
28.What is a problem about artificial turf?
A.It gets too hot in the sun.
B.It wastes plenty of water.
C.It results in light pollution.
D.It is soft for soccer games.
29.What can be inferred about the field tests?
A.They were carried out indoors.
B.They were against the law.
C.They stopped real grass growing.
D.They showed a cool success.
30.What is Vasilou’s attitude to the new system?
A.Worried. B.Doubtful.
C.Positive. D.Uncaring.
31.Which is the most suitable title for the text?

B.A Practical Way to Collect Rainwater.
C.Unlocking the Secret of Natural Grass.

People have different ways of dealing with a common cold. Some take over the counter medicines such as aspirin while others try popular home remedies (治疗) like herbal tea or chicken soup.Yet here is the tough truth about the common cold:nothing really cures it.
So why do people sometimes believe that their remedies work?According to James Taylor, professor at the University of Washington, colds usually go away on their own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak,so it’s easy to believe it’s medicine rather than time that deserves the credit,USA Today reported.
It still seems hard to believe that we can deal with more serious diseases yet are powerless against something so common as a cold.Recently, scientists came closer to figure out why.To understand it,you first need to know how antiviral drugs work. They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus. To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw (拼图),which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral drug that is effective enough.
The two cold viruses that scientists had long known about were rhinovirus (鼻病毒) A and B.But they didn’t find out about the existence of a third virus, rhinovirus C,until 2006.All three of them contribute to the common cold, but drugs that work well against rhinovirus A and B have little effect when used against rhinovirus C.
“This explains most of the previous failures of drug trials against rhinoviruses,” study leader Professor Ann C.Palmenberg at the University of Wiscons in Madison,US,told Science Daily.
Now,more than 10 years after the discovery of rhinovirus C,scientists have finally built a highly detailed 3D model of the virus, showing that the surface of the virus is,as expected, different from that of other cold viruses.
With the model in hand, hopefully a real cure for a common cold is on its way.Soon,we may no longer have to waste our money on medicines that don’t really work.
32.What does the author think of popular remedies for a common cold?
A.They are quite effective.
B.They are slightly helpful.
C.They actually have no effect.
D.They still need to be improved.
33.How do antiviral drugs work?
A.By breaking up cold viruses directly.
B.By changing the surface structures of the cold viruses.
C.By preventing colds from developing into serious diseases.
D.By absorbing different kinds of cold viruses at the same time.
34.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The surface of cold viruses looks quite similar.
B.Scientists have already found a cure for the common cold.
C.Scientists were not aware of the existence of rhinovirus C until recently.
D.Knowing the structure of cold viruses is the key to developing an effective cure.
35.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Drugs against cold viruses.
B.Helpful home remedies.
C.No current cure for common cold.
D.Research on cold viruses.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Kids and teenagers who volunteer aren’t just helping their community. They might also be helping themselves. 36 It found that volunteering through school or community groups is connected with better wellness among children and teens.
Kids who participated in community service were 34% more likely to be in good physical health than those who didn’t,the study found. And those who volunteered were 66% more likely to be considered doing well in general.Kids aged 12 and older who volunteered were 25% less likely to have anxiety than those who didn’t.The findings come from survey data(数据)provided by the parents of some 50,000 kids in the United States ages 6 to 17.
37
Studies like this have limitations.Parents answered questions about their kids’ health and community-service activity. But a parent might not know if their child experiences anxiety or considers themselves to be flourishing(健康的). 38 It can only uncover connection. So it’s impossible to say for sure that volunteering leads to better mental and physical health.
39 In recent years, rates of depression and anxiety have risen among young people. So there’s a clear need for accessible and effective mental health resources(资源).Giving back to the community may be one such resource.
Previous research has also found links between volunteering and well-being among adults.Serving the community seems to help people feel a sense of purpose. 40 Generosity has also been shown to boost happiness and improve physical health. It might be a practice worth cultivating(培养).
A.This type of data also can’t prove cause and effect.
B.Most of the kids showed great interest in the survey.
C.And it makes them feel connected to those around them.
D.But the data comes at an important time for youth mental health.
E.About half of those parents reported that their kids did volunteer work.
F.That’s according to a new research published in JAMA Network Open,in May.
G.Volunteering means developing new skills, sharing love, and making new friends.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Ever since I can remember,I’ve always been shy.The thought of talking to new people or being the center of attention made my heart race and palms sweat. As I entered middle school, this shyness turned into social anxiety, making it even harder for me to interact with my peers.
One day, during a class presentation,I stumbled (结巴) over my words and everyone laughed.I felt extremely ashamed. That only made my social anxiety worse, and I started avoiding speaking in front of others.
My parents noticed my struggle and suggested I talk to our family therapist (治疗专家),Dr.Smith.At first,I hesitated, but I knew I needed help.During our first period,Dr.Smith explained that social anxiety was a common issue and there were ways to overcome it.She recommended some effective treatments.Over the next few months,I attended weekly treatment with Dr.Smith.Slowly but surely,I began to feel more confident in myself. As part of the treatment,Dr.Smith encouraged me to take part in school events and clubs that interested me.It was terrifying to put myself out there, but I knew it was necessary for my growth.
A few days later,a school speech contest was to be held.Dr.Smith had encouraged me to participate,so I decided to give it a try.I prepared for weeks, practicing my speech in front of a mirror and rehearsing my lines. On the day of the contest,my heart was pounding, but I took a deep breath and walked onto the stage.I looked out into the audience and saw my classmates, friends, and family all there to support me.I smiled and began my speech.
注意:1.续写词数应为80左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
After the contest,I went to visit Dr.Smith happily.

Well,my club is called the Historical Club.We meet every other Thursday.I think I should point out we are not just interested in sitting around and talking about the past.A lot of our activities are to do with what can be perhaps called “living history”—by which I mean how history can help us now.And because of this,we have been very interested in finding out about the history of this town itself—and some of the famous people who used to live here. We’ve also visited several historic houses in the area. This year we’re planning on going out much more to visit various historic sites away from the college. If you’d like to join, please come and see me.

第一节
Dear Jim,
It’s great to hear from you.I feel proud knowing your interest in Chinese history.
As for my favourite figure in Chinese history,it must be Wei Yuan,a great thinker in the late Qing Dynasty. He,in his book,Maps and Records of the World, introduced modern technologies and ideas to China. That opened our eyes to the world. In fact,he inspires me to major in English in college.
Interested in knowing more?I can find you some books!Just let me know.
Cheers!
Yours,
Li Hua
