I’m Thomas from the United Kingdom, working in Beijing, and I’m a shopping addict (迷). The main source of my addiction is Taobao, China’s massive online shopping platform — a place for everything from clothes to books, and everything in between. It makes Amazon look like a corner shop.
My favorite is mostly books and different kinds of water bottles. My cupboard has a shelf full of them, many of which my size will no longer allow me to crowd into.
What’s worse is that the app’s very clever algorithms (算法) track what I look through, so every time I open it on my phone, I am greeted by an advertisement inviting me to dip deeper into my digital wallet. I don’t even have to open the app. They are available to purchase with just a tap of my finger.
Once you make an order, you need to wait. The shipping gives your heart a little hit. Then there’s another little rush of endorphins (内啡肽) when the delivery person picks it up. You watch your package edging its way up the map to Beijing. When the app tells you it’s on the delivery bike, the same excitement as a kid on Christmas morning takes hold as you wait for the knock at the door. Much like a little dog waiting for its master to return home from work.
The packaging is eagerly removed, exciting another hit of happiness. An hour later, the buyer’s regret comes. To make yourself feel better, you start using the app once more and the cycle starts all over again.
I could blame (责备) my addiction on Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba, Taobao’s parent company, or point a finger at Liu Qiangdong, founder of JD, a similarly addictive domestic shopping app. I could even blame Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who started all this e-commerce.
“Surely, Thomas,” I hear you ask, “instead of blaming poor billionaires, you should take responsibility for your own sudden desire and lack of willpower.”
4. Why is Thomas crazy about Taobao?
A. It helps bring in money. B. He prefers online platforms.
C. It offers multiple item options. D. Amazon is too distant to access.
5. How can Thomas’s phone know what he prefers?
A. His digital wallet pays for it automatically.
B. He searches online when he opens the phone.
C. He communicates with the Taobao business owner.
D. The app’s algorithms follow his digital footprints.
6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The author’s expectation of the purchased item. B. The challenges of online shopping.
C. The long journey of a purchased item. D. The accuracy of the shopping app.
7. What does the author want to convey in this passage?
A. We should say no to e-commerce. B. We should blame Taobao.
C. We should be responsible for our purchasing. D. We should admire billionaires.
C 5. D 6. A 7. C

Great white sharks have been described as the most violent creature ever since the release of “Jaws” in 1975. But what if instead of one shark appearing, two were working together?
Scientists say research off Mexico’s Guadalupe Island in the Pacific Ocean shows great white sharks are sociable and will sometimes work together to increase their chances of catching prey (猎物).
Guadalupe Island is home to a small group of scientists and a popular tourist destination for spotting great white sharks because of a large quantity of seals. What makes this location unique is the waters off the island are very clear.
A team of scientists from Florida International University created a “super social tag” tracking device to put on the great white sharks. With a video camera and sensors detecting a shark’s depth and direction, the device also has receivers to detect when other sharks are near them. The team then put the devices on three male and three female white sharks over a four-year period.
The data showed sharks preferred to be in groups of the same sex (性别), but their ways of hunting were unique. One shark had the tag on for only 30 hours, but it associated with 12 other sharks. Another that had the tag on for five days was only with two other sharks. “Most associations were short, but there were sharks where we found considerably longer associations,” Yannis Papastamatiou, lead author of the study, said. “Seventy minutes is a long time to be swimming around with another white shark.”
Papastamatiou said there is no clear answer to why white sharks are being social, but it’s probably because if one shark is successful in finding large prey, another will want to know how to have the same success. The sample size is small, but Papastamatiou said the findings give scientists a window into the relationship between sharks. He hopes to develop tracking systems that can be used for weeks, possibly years, to see the development of relationships between sharks.
8. What does the author want to tell us in the first 2 paragraphs?
A. The purpose of the research. B. The social nature of sharks.
C. The content of Jaws. D. The violence of sharks.
9. What’s the purpose of using the “super social tag”?
A. To increase the chance of hunting.
B. To promote associations among sharks.
C. To keep track of the sharks’ activities.
D. To study the relationships between sharks and their prey.
10. What can we learn about sharks from the research?
A. They are divided into groups of the same sex.
B. They have quite similar hunting habits.
C. Their associations last at least 70 minutes.
D. The frequency of sharks’ communications varies.
11. How does Papaslamatiou feel about his future study?
A. Uncertain. B. Doubtful. C. Promising. D. Cautious.
B 9. C 10. D 11. C
根据第一段“But what if instead of one shark appearing, two were working together.(但如果不是出现一条鲨鱼,而是两条鲨鱼一起工作呢?)”和第二段“Scientists say research off Mexico’s Guadalupe Island in the Pacific Ocean shows great white sharks are sociable and will sometimes work together to increase their chances of catching prey.(科学家表示,在太平洋墨西哥瓜达卢佩岛附近进行的研究表明,大白鲨具有社会性,有时会合作捕猎,以增加捕获猎物的机会。)”
根据第四段“A team of scientists from Florida International University created a “super social tag” tracking device to put on the great white sharks. With a video camera and sensors detecting a shark’s depth and direction, the device also has receivers to detect when other sharks are near them(一组来自佛罗里达国际大学科学家发明了一种“超级社交标签”追踪设备,用于大白鲨身上。该设备配有摄像机和传感器,可检测鲨鱼的深度和方向,还配有接收器,可检测其他鲨鱼何时靠近)”可知,使用“超级社交标签”的目的是追踪鲨鱼的活动。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“The data showed sharks preferred to be in groups of the same sex (性别), but their ways of hunting were unique. One shark had the tag on for only 30 hours, but it associated with 12 other sharks. Another that had the tag on for five days was only with two other sharks(数据显示,鲨鱼更喜欢与同性别的个体组成群体,但它们的狩猎方式却各具特色。有一只鲨鱼仅携带标签30小时,期间就与12只其他鲨鱼有过互动。而另一只携带标签长达五天的鲨鱼,则只与另外两只鲨鱼相伴)”可知,有的鲨鱼与12只其他鲨鱼有过互动而有的鲨鱼只与另外两只鲨鱼相伴,可推理出鲨鱼社交的频率各不相同。故选D项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Papastamatiou said there is no clear answer to why white sharks are being social, but it’s probably because if one shark is successful in finding large prey, another will want to know how to have the same success. The sample size is small, but Papastamatiou said the findings give scientists a window into the relationship between sharks. He hopes to develop tracking systems that can be used for weeks, possibly years, to see the development of relationships between sharks(帕帕斯马蒂乌表示,对于为什么大白鲨会表现出社交行为,目前还没有明确的答案,但很可能的原因是,如果一只鲨鱼成功找到了大型猎物,另一只鲨鱼就想知道如何取得同样的成功。
D
“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” When it comes to device addiction, this may very well be the case. If you believe that how you engage with your smartphone has no impact on your children, think again.
One study looked at 200 families and noted that the children of parents with phone addictions were much more likely to have behavior issues. In short, this obsession led to “technoference” or interruption of everyday interactions between parents and kids. In some cases, this interruption happened in face-to-face conversations, and in other cases, the devices disrupted playtime or meals. When this type of “technoference” occurred, parents rated their children as displaying more behavior problems, including whining, losing temper, sulking (生闷气), and becoming frustrated.
In addition, according to children development experts, there are bilateral signaling systems that occur between adults and children, aiding the construction of the basic architecture of the brain. For example, infants and toddlers are highly engaged with the vocal cues of their parents that tend to happen with simplified grammar, a high-pitched tone, and exaggerated enthusiasm. This mode of relational conversation is incredibly important to a child’s development.
With the arrival of smartphones, many parents are distracted and stuck in what experts are calling “continuous partial attention” mode. This leads to significant and recurring disruptions to the parent-child conversation flow, which can impair not only a child’s language learning ability but also their school achievements overall.
While your habit may seem harmless, your kids may actually be imitating your behavior and forming a dependence of their own. One study reported that some teenagers may spend up to 12 hours— half of an entire day— online and mindlessly swiping through social media apps without engaging in any one piece of content beyond a few seconds.
As a parent, the best thing you can do is lead by example. Try to limit time spent with technology, especially when it diverts (牵制) your attention from other priorities. Shut down smartphones at dinner. Set aside phone-free time each day to engage with your children without the distraction that technology brings. While you may not be able to completely cut ties with new modes of communication, you can be sure that your children get the one-on-one time they need to develop into healthy, happy adults.
12. Why does the writer start the passage with the quote “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”?
A. To provide evidence of device addiction.
B. To stress children will follow parents’ example.
C. To highlight the final solution to device addiction.
D. To show the close bond between parent and children.
13. What does the underlined word “obsession” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. A basic and simple need. B. A short and occasional habit.
C. A strong and unhealthy interest. D. A weak and controllable feeling.
14. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 3?
A. To support the argument for a child’s addiction to devices.
B. To further scientifically explain a child’s behavioral problem.
C. To present background information for the topic of the passage.
D. To give an argument for the problem of a child’s language learning ability.
15. What does the writer suggest parents do in the last paragraph?
A. Value the communication over daily meals.
B. Show expected behavior through their own actions.
C. Focus on improving their children’s communication skills.
D. Allow children to use smartphones during the one-on-one time.
B 13. C 14. B 15. B
根据第一段““The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” When it comes to device addiction, this may very well be the case. If you believe that how you engage with your smartphone has no impact on your children, think again.(“有其父必有其子。”就设备成瘾而言,情况可能就是如此。如果你认为你使用智能手机的方式对你的孩子没有影响,那么再想想吧)”可知,开篇引用谚语“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree(有其父必有其子)”,后文紧接着点明核心主题——“父母使用手机的方式会影响孩子”,且最后段落也强调“父母应以身作则(lead by example)”。由此可推断,引用该谚语是为了“强调孩子会模仿父母的行为”。故选B项。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词前文“One study looked at 200 families and noted that the children of parents with phone addictions were much more likely to have behavior issues.( 一项研究调查了200个家庭,发现父母有手机成瘾的孩子更有可能出现行为问题)”提到“有手机成瘾问题的父母,其孩子更可能出现行为问题”,以及后文“…led to “technoference” or interruption of everyday interactions between parents and kids.(……导致了父母和孩子之间日常互动的“技术干扰”或中断)”指出“这种 obsession 导致技术干扰’,影响亲子互动”。结合“addiction(成瘾)”的语义,“obsession”应指“强烈且不健康的兴趣(即手机成瘾)”。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“One study looked at 200 families and noted that the children of parents with phone addictions were much more likely to have behavior issues.(一项研究调查了200个家庭,发现父母有手机成瘾的孩子更有可能出现行为问题)”以及第三段“In addition, according to children development experts, there are bilateral signaling systems that occur between adults and children, aiding the construction of the basic architecture of the brain. For example, infants and toddlers are highly engaged with the vocal cues of their parents that tend to happen with simplified grammar, a high-pitched tone, and exaggerated enthusiasm. This mode of relational conversation is incredibly important to a child’s development.(此外,根据儿童发展专家的说法,在成人和儿童之间存在双边信号系统,帮助构建大脑的基本结构。例如,婴儿和蹒跚学步的孩子会高度参与父母的声音暗示,这些暗示往往是简化的语法、高音调和夸张的热情。这种关系对话模式对孩子的发展非常重要)”可知,引用儿童发展专家的观点,从科学角度,进一步解释“为何亲子互动中断会导致孩子问题”,是对第二段孩子行为问题的科学补充。故选B项。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“As a parent, the best thing you can do is lead by example. Try to limit time spent with technology, especially when it diverts (牵制) your attention from other priorities. Shut down smartphones at dinner. Set aside phone-free time each day to engage with your children without the distraction that technology brings.( 作为父母,你能做的最好的事情就是以身作则。尽量限制花在科技产品上的时间,尤其是当它转移了你对其他重要事情的注意力时。晚餐时关掉智能手机。每天留出没有手机的时间和孩子们在一起,远离科技带来的干扰)”可知,作者在最后一段建议父母通过自己的行为表现出预期的行为。故选B项。

When you are alone, you can introspect, understand what you really want in life, be true to your feelings, and make decisions without being influenced by others.
___18___ Do you feel puzzled about what to do? It’s good to ask people for advice, but finally it’s going to be your decision. Take some time off, go for a long walk or a run, and you’ll find the answer you’ve been looking for. ___19___ More importantly, it will help you enjoy the little things that you never realized mattered.
When you’ re alone, you can do what you want to do as you won’t be afraid of being judged by someone else. ___20___ Actually, happiness starts with YOU, not with your relationships, your job, or your money, but only with you!

The idea of becoming a writer had come to me off and on since my childhood. It wasn’t until my third year in high school that I made up my mind to become a writer.
Before that, I’d been bored with everything associated with English courses. I hated it when the task turned out long, lifeless paragraphs that were painful for teachers to read and for me to write. So when I learned Mr. Smith would teach us for third-year English, I saw another boring year. It was said that Mr. Smith was dull and unable to inspire students. Luckily, it was not the case.
Before Mr. Smith taught us, I had guessed that I would have to bear a fruitless year with him. At the beginning it appeared to be so. But a month later, we needed to write an informal article. Mr. Smith handed out a homework sheet, offering us a choice for various topics. I took the sheet home and did nothing until one day before the deadline. Lying on the sofa, I finally faced up to the unwelcome task, took the sheet out of my notebook, and scanned it. The topic which caught my eye was “The Art of Eating Spaghetti”.
This title produced a special series of mental images. Vivid and sweet memories came flooding back to a night when all of us were seated around the supper table. . On the table was spaghetti (意大利面条), which was known to most of us back then. Immediately the good humor of spaghetti woke up in my mind as I recalled how we tried and argued over socially respectable methods for moving spaghetti from the plate to our mouth.
Suddenly I wanted to write about that, about the warmth and good feelings of it, but I wanted to put it down simply for my own joy, not for Mr. Smith. Maybe Mr. Smith would be annoyed, but it felt so good to write for myself! The next morning I turned in my essay, a bit worried and a bit eager.
Two days later in class, Mr. Smith returned everyone’s graded paper except mine.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version
Two days later in class, Mr. Smith returned everyone’s graded paper except mine. Anxious and embarrassed, I sank into my seat. Mr. Smith must have been annoyed at my essay. The thought made my heart sink. But then Mr. Smith cleared his throat, signaled us to listen and started to read an essay. It was mine! The Art of Eating Spaghetti! He read in high spirits, his voice, his hand and his mouth all joining in. All the good humor of eating spaghetti woke in the class. My classmates laughed themselves under the desk. So did I myself. “You are so humorous. You promise to be a good writer!” Mr. Smith beamed. He did touch me! And he did inspire me to have taken writing seriously since my third year. (117 words)

A. They are divided into groups of the same sex.
B. They have quite similar hunting habits.
C. Their associations last at least 70 minutes.

11. How does Papaslamatiou feel about his future study?
A. Uncertain. B. Doubtful. C. Promising. D. Cautious.
