B Jaden Anthony, a boy from Brooklyn, New York, was born with a disease called diabetes (糖尿病), a condition that often leaves him feeling thirsty. Deeply aware of the importance of clean water, he became concerned when he learned of the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. In 2014, the city began using water that contained dangerous levels of lead (铅), which is harmful to all, especially children. Even small amounts could cause diseases and affect learning abilities. Therefore, Jaden wanted to do something to help the kids in Flint. Being a comic book fan, Jaden decided to create his own to raise awareness about clean water and donate funds. “Kid Brooklyn,” he explained in an interview, “aims to make both kids and adults recognize global dangers.” In the first book of a series, the main character Kid Brooklyn and his friends are given an unusual Sun Stone that helps them develop super powers. They use those powers to keep the planet clean and safe. Jaden works with illustrators to bring the characters and stories to life. Jaden was twelve years old when his first book was published in October 2017. A dollar from every book Jaden sells is donated to Green for All, an organization to bring clean, fresh water to the families in Flint. Future issues of the comic will promote different environmental causes. Jaden wants to encourage children all over the world to become scientists and engineers who can fix the problems caused by climate change. He also has a message for the kids of the world who don’t have the same access to clean water as he has. “Don’t get sad. Don’t lose any hope. We got you.” 24. What made Jaden take action to help the children? A. He visited Brooklyn on holiday. B. He noticed water pollution in Flint. C. His disease became more serious. D. His learning abilities were affected. 25. What is mainly written about the kids in the first book? A. Their problem. B. Their donation. C. Their friendship. D. Their contribution. 26. What can be learned about future comic issues? A. They will inspire scientists. B. They will offer climate solutions. C. They will support more green efforts. D. They will focus on diabetes research. 27. Which of the following could best describe Jaden? A. Caring. B. Intelligent. C. Humorous. D. Thankful. C Crows (乌鸦) are very smart birds. They can count, tell human faces, and even use tools. Recently, a popular story said that a Swedish town was training crows to pick up cigarette butts (烟头). While this project isn’t actually happening now, the idea is based on real science. In 2022, a researcher named Hans Christian Hanssen proposed “Corvid Cleaning”. The plan was to train wild crows to collect cigarette rubbish and drop it into special bins (垃圾箱). In return, the bins would give the birds food as a reward. The idea drew international attention, and some experts even praised its possibilities to cut down litter in the city. However, the business behind the project failed in 2025. Despite this, false news about the program continues to spread online. Why did the project fail? A 2024 study pointed out some serious worries. Researchers worried about the health risks to the crows and whether the public would accept animals cleaning up human waste. Besides this, the business itself was short of money. This wasn’t the first try either. A French theme park tried something similar in 2018 with mixed results. In the end, the question isn’t just whether we can train crows to clean, but should we? But the story also draws attention to a huge environmental problem. Cigarette butts are the world’s most littered item. Humans throw away around 4.5 trillion filters every year, and that number could soon double. These filters take years to break down and give off harmful chemicals into soil and waterways, harming both wildlife and the environment. While using clever crows as cleaners makes for an eye-catching headline, the real lesson is about human responsibility. Instead of depending on animals to fix our problems, we need to address cigarette pollution at its source (源头) through better waste management and a change of smoking rules. Crows are very smart, but at the end of the day, protecting the planet is our job, not theirs. 28. What was the main purpose of the “Corvid Cleaning” project? A. To study crows’ cleverness. B. To test special trash bins in Sweden. C. To create a new bird shelter. D. To train crows to clear cigarette waste. 29. What problem did researchers raise about the crow-cleaning project? A. The crows were not smart enough. B. The special bins cost too much to build. C. It could harm the crows and upset the public. D. The French project had already failed completely. 30. What does the text say about cigarette butts in the environment? A. They are a problem only in European countries. B. They are easy to collect and disappear in weeks. C. They are the most littered item but are harmless to animals. D. They give off harmful chemicals as they slowly break down. 31. What message does the author tell in the last paragraph? A. Crows are too smart for cleaning tasks. B. Theme parks should stop using wild animals. C. Humans should take care of pollution themselves. D. We should not believe false stories about animals. D One of the greatest killers in the Western world is heart disease. The death rate from the disease has been increasing at an alarming speed for the past thirty years. Medical experts know that people can reduce their chances of getting heart disease by exercising regularly, by not smoking, by changing their diets, and by paying more attention to reducing stress in their work. However, Western healthcare systems are still not paying enough attention to the prevention (预防) of the disease. There is a need for more programs to educate the public about the causes and prevention of heart disease. Instead of supporting such programs, however, the U. S. healthcare system is spending large sums of money on the surgical (外科的) treatment of the disease after it develops. This emphasis (强调) on treatment clearly has something to do with the technological advances that have taken place in the past ten to fifteen years. In this time, modern technology has enabled doctors to develop new surgical techniques. Many operations that were considered impossible or too risky a few years ago are now performed every day in U. S. hospitals. The result has been a huge increase in heart surgery. Heart surgery does help many patients, yet some people point out that focusing too much on it has three clear disadvantages. First, it attracts interest and money away from the question of prevention. Second, it causes the costs of general hospital care to rise. After hospitals buy the expensive equipment that is necessary for modern heart surgery, they must try to reclaim the money they have spent. To do this, they raise costs for all their patients, not just those patients whose treatment requires the equipment. Third, doctors may carry out unnecessary operations just because advanced equipment is available. A report shows one kind of heart surgery improved only 15% of patients, while over 100,000 such operations are performed annually in America. 32. What influence has modern technology had on medicine? A. It has reduced the costs of medical treatment. B. It has encouraged doctors to do more heart surgery. C. It has educated people about the prevention of heart disease. D. It has drawn public attention to the cause of the heart disease. 33. Which of the following statement would the author probably agree with? A. More money should be spent on the prevention of heart disease. B. Heart surgery has helped most patients improve their conditions. C. Modern technology has made heart surgery more risky than before. D. The public have known a great deal about the causes of heart disease. 34. What does the underlined word “reclaim” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Burn up. B. Get back. C. Settle for. D. Give away. 35. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. The Greatest Killer in the West. B. Heart Surgery: Benefits and Risks. C. New Technology and Heart Surgery. D.
