写作
Good morning, everyone!
It’s my honor to talk about how music influences our life. For me, music plays an important part in daily life. When I feel stressed with my schoolwork, soft music calms me down and helps me relax. When I’m in a bad mood, lively music cheers me up and brings me joy. Besides, music can help me focus better when I’m doing homework. It connects me with friends who share the same taste too.
In short, music makes our life more colorful and meaningful. It’s a wonderful companion that we all need.
Thank you for listening!

W: Oh, that would be great! Thank you.
Text 3
M: Wow, look at the buildings here! I know Rome is wonderful, but this is beyond words!

M: It feels like stepping back in time.
Text 4

W: OK, I’ll go with this one.
Text 6

M: Yes. I’ll go to visit my uncle and his kids. My uncle runs a farm. July is the busiest time of year for the farm.
W: So will you help them do some farming?
M: Of course.
W: It must be fun. I’ve always dreamed of spending some time on a farm. Can I go with you? I want to get close to nature.

M: Reading more books is a good goal. I hope I can be stronger. Maybe I can go to the gym a couple of times a week from January.
W: That’s a great start! But plans can’t just be words. How do we make sure we actually stick to them?
M: Asking someone to push us, like a friend or a family member, can make a difference.
W: Why don’t we check in on each other’s progress throughout the year? We can do that!
M: Alright. Cheers to that, Emma.
Text 9
M: Shirley, where did you go? You missed Ms. Black’s announcement about the upcoming music festival.
W: I went to the bathroom, and on my way back to the classroom, I ran into Meg and we talked for a while. What did the teacher say about the festival?
M: It’ll be held next month in the lecture hall. The purpose of the festival is to reduce our study pressure and promote our mind health.
W: That sounds nice.
M: You’re an expert at playing traditional Chinese musical instruments. Why don’t you play the guzheng or pipa at the festival? After Mr. Griffin’s chemistry class, you can sign up in Mr. Ryan’s office. He’s in charge of organizing the festival.
W: OK, but I’m more willing to play the erhu this time. Guzheng is too heavy to carry and I played the pipa last New Year’s Day. Well, you can also give a performance at the music festival and show your talent.
M: Don’t pull my leg. I can neither dance nor sing. Maybe I can help you record the performance video with my new camera.

Running into a Better Life
This global site is a place for runners to share their stories about running. So if you are a runner with a story to tell, get in touch -- we’d love to hear from you!
Li Yue,16, Beijing
I was born with asthma (哮喘) and I never thought I’d be a runner! I only joined my local athletics club because my doctor told me that in my particular case exercise could improve how my lungs work. But before I knew it, I was taking part in local races. As my fitness and my running improved, I started running in national competitions. This year I won silver in the under 18’s 10,000 metres! And who knows, next year I could win gold!
Sarah, 36, Montreal
Not so long ago, I didn’t do any exercise- not even any jogging! Then I discovered an app called Running Power. It lists your performance against other runners in your social network. At first, I kept running just to see my name in the top five. Soon, I found that I was not alone-I came across other runners running for the same purpose! Now I no longer use the app, but I’ve fallen in love with running, and still do it with my running friends.
David, 52, New York
As a computer engineer, there’s always a new challenge just around the corner! It can be quite stressful at times, which makes me feel anxious. To help deal with this, I go running as often as I possibly can. Whether I’m at the gym or on the road, my nervous energy pushes me through mile one. By mile two, the tension (紧张) has moved from my mind to my legs. By the end of the run, all my stress has disappeared and I’m ready to face the next day at work!
21. Why did Li Yue join the athletics club at first?
A. To make more friends. B. To challenge her limits.
C. To win a national medal. D. To improve her health conditions.
22. How does running influence David?
A. It makes him more creative. B. It helps him reduce pressure.
C. It helps him meet new partners. D. It improves his work performance.
23. What do the three people have in common?
A. They all start running for health. B. They all use apps for running.
C. They all benefit from running. D. They are all professional runners.

What comes to your mind when you think of music in Austria? You might think of classical composers, such as Mozart. Or you might remember the film The Sound of Music, whose story takes place in Austria. But Austrian music started off quite differently.
One of the earliest types of Austrian music may not seem like music at all. Yodelling is a form of shouting that changes between low and high sounds. It is thought to have begun as a way for animal herders (牧民) in the mountains to communicate or to call their animals. Even today, yodelling is often used in other kinds of music, including pop, rock and country music.
However, Austria is best known for its many famous classical composers. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Austrian royal (王室的) family was in favor of the arts, and they drew many musicians to Vienna. The city soon became known as a centre for music al innovation (创新) and performance. Composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Strauss II and Franz Schubert lived in Vienna. Some of them even used traditional Austrian folk songs or tunes in their works.
Opera has also been a popular music form in Austria, and it was not just wealthy Austrians who attended performances. Many popular classical composers also wrote operas, which regular citizens of Vienna went in large numbers to hear. Even today, there are opera productions performed every year at the St Margarethen Opera Festival. This festival is held outdoors, in a very unusual location: the rock y sandstone backdrop of a quarry (采石场). It now serves as a stage for opera, and also jazz and pop concerts. They all take place in the open air under the stars, taking advantage of the quarry’s unusual sound effects.
Austria has a long and rich musical history, from folk songs and dances to classical symphonies and operas. No matter what kind of music you like, chances are that you’ll be able to find it in one of the country’s many theatres or small cafes. The sounds of Austrian music are everywhere.

There was a time, not so long ago, when kids built castles, climbed trees, and rode bikes until dark. These outdoor adventures have not disappeared. They are just waiting to be rediscovered beyond screens.
While technology offers many benefits, the trend (趋势) of children having smartphones may change how they develop, play, and connect. According to TIME, much of the technology that kids are using is designed to be addictive. However, parents including Holly Moscatiello, the leader of the nonprofit The Balance Project, are helping children control the use of digital devices. She’s leading a counter-movement to get kids off screens and back into real life.
“We want to make experiencing community life as easy as using a phone,” she told TIME. The group is organizing community projects that make outdoor play exciting again, such as cycling to school together and Balance Boxes- kits with small toys and clay (黏土) for screen-free fun. It’s a simple reminder that independence and connect ion can develop when kids look up from their devices.
Moscatiello notes that smartphones have reshaped childhood nearly overnight: 89 percent of 12-year-old British kids own a smartphone and the average age of receiving one’s first phone is nine. To fight this, The Balance Project started a parent agreement in Oxfordshire, where parents of around 4,000 children promised not to give their kids smartphones until Year Nine (8th grade).
The goal of this group is solidarity - when everyone waits, no child feels left out. In one school in Oxfordshire, students lock their phones away during the day, and teachers report calmer classrooms. “Now we focus on school and study better,” a student at a smartphone-free school said.
By joining together, parents and communities are making it easier for the next generation to grow up rooted in real life instead of through a screen. Giving children back their time, freedom, and face-to-face friends is one of the best investments (投资) a parent can make towards a brighter future.
32. What does The Balance Project do to help children?
