第二节(满分25分)
Before Alex could answer, he noticed a police car round the corner. The officers saw the hazard lights flashing in the darkness and pulled over to investigate. “Is there a problem here?” one of them called out as they approached. Alex quickly explained the desperate situation, pointing to Mia’s trapped arm and the rising panic in her eyes. One officer immediately went back to get a few tools from the police car. Working together, they slipped a thin metal tool between the glass and the door frame. With steady pressure, they created just enough space to free the trapped arm.
Finally, Mia pulled her arm free. She was shaking, both from the cold and the shock. “Thank you — all of you,” she said as she rubbed her arm gently. Tears of relief welled up in her eyes. One officer called a local repair service to have Mia’s car taken away, while Alex handed her his jacket. After everything was settled, Mia waved warm goodbyes to the officers and Alex before taking a taxi home. Back in his car, Alex realized that his small choice had turned a frightening situation into a safe resolution. Sometimes, he thought, the best thing you can do is simply stop and care.

Two teenagers from Texas have invented a small device that uses soundwaves to remove microplastics from water. Their invention could help clean water around the world.
Seventeen-year-olds Victoria Ou and Justin Huang from The Woodlands, Texas developed a pen-sized device that uses high-frequency soundwaves to trap microplastics in water. The device works by creating sound forces that push tiny plastic pieces together. Once they clump together, these plastics can be easily removed without chemicals, heat, or much energy.
In lab tests, the device removed between 84% and 94% of microplastics in just one pass. The teens presented their work at the 2024 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, where they won the famous Gordon E. Moore Award and a $50,000 prize.
What makes their invention special is that it is simple, small, and can be used at different scales. Unlike traditional filtering systems that use screens or chemicals, their soundwave method is gentle and saves energy. According to Huang and Ou, the device could be used in wastewater treatment plants, textile factories, rural water systems, and even washing machines or fish tanks.
Although more testing and improvements are needed before it can be widely used, their invention is a big step forward in fighting microplastic pollution. It also shows how young people can use creativity and science to solve global problems.
24. What did Victoria Ou and Justin Huang invent?
A. A chemical filter for wastewater treatment.
B. A portable soundwave tool for water treatment.
C. A new energy-saving washing machine.
D. A high-frequency soundwave machine.
25. How does the device remove microplastics from water?
A. By heating water to break down plastics.
B. By adding chemicals to break down plastics.
C. By creating sound forces to push plastic pieces together.
D. By passing water through fine metal screens.
26. What makes this invention special compared to traditional methods?
A. It requires more energy to work.
B. It works only in large treatment plants.
C. It is simple, small, and energy-saving.
D. It relies heavily on chemical treatments.
27. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The device is already widely used around the world.
B. The invention still needs more testing before wide use.
C. The invention did not perform well in lab tests.
D. Only professional scientists can solve global problems.

The Blackhawk Museum in Danville, California, offers a glimpse into the art, culture, and history of ancient China. The museum’s “Into China” gallery exhibits rare treasures from this East Asian country, which has a rich history.
“The museum was designed to help visitors learn more about ancient Chinese history in a unique way,” said Joel Hodge, a program director at the museum. “Many of the items in the gallery can only be seen here or in China.”
According to Hodge, about 200,000 to 250,000 people visit the museum each year. “Into China” visitors can see a replica (复制品) of the Forbidden City, an amazing complex located in Beijing, China’s capital. Replicas of the city’s buildings offer a bird’s eye view of the world of China’s emperors. A replica of the Dragon Throne, on which Emperors once sat high above the ground, serves as a reminder of hereditary (世袭的) power.
The exhibition also introduces visitors to Confucius, one of the most celebrated philosophers in history. Confucius’ teachings further stressed kindness and morality. Visitors can learn how his beliefs helped shape the culture of ancient China.
There’re other special treasures, and a porcelain room holds glass vases decorated with beautiful drawings of nature and animals. “The artworks in the gallery were created in the same way ancient Chinese craftsmen would make them,” Hodge noted. “That way, visitors can see how ancient pottery, instruments, and pieces of art were made.”
Finally, replicas of China’s famous terracotta warriors are on exhibition. The original sculptures were unearthed in the 20th century. They had been buried with the first Chinese Emperor to protect him in the afterlife.
“The terracotta soldiers are my favorite part of the exhibition,” said Greg Gregory, who was visiting the Blackhawk with his son. “It’s amazing to think that the ancient Chinese spent 40 years making them. Seeing the replicas really takes you back to the time when the people of ancient China looked at these soldiers as a symbol of protection.”
28. What is the purpose of the museum’s “Into China” gallery?
A. To develop people’s interest in cultures.
B. To attract a lot more visitors to China.
C. To make Chinese ancient culture known.
D. To draw wide attention to modern China.
29. What makes the artworks in the “Into China” gallery so special?
A. Their special shapes. B. Their nice decoration.
C. Their unique materials. D. Their producing method.
30. What did Greg Gregory talk about concerning the terracotta warriors?
A. The greatness. B. The history. C. The application. D. The significance.
31. What might be the best title for the text?
A. Learning about China from a gallery
B. Researching the culture of ancient China
C. Adding Chinese artworks to a museum
D. Visiting an amazing museum in China

Olives: The Life and Lore of a Noble Fruit is a lively story of a tree, the fruit and the oil it produces, and the colorful characters who make their living from this most Mediterranean (地中海) crop. This is not an academic book — Rosenblum is a journalist whose interest in olives was inspired by a collection of ignored trees on the property of a house he bought in southern France — but every page expresses the author’s admiration for the“remarkable little stone fruit” that inspires so many people’s lives.
Rosenblum describes planting and cutting, picking and pressing, taste and trade, and the complexity of a market where the only thing protecting consumers is faith in the producer they buy from. He recites (列举) a series of things that can go wrong in growing and processing olives, and takes delight in the rich strong taste of the fresh-pressed oil when everything in the harvest has gone right. He expresses the flavor of life in those sunny lands where olives have supported family after family for thousands of years.
At the heart of this tale is Rosenblum’s clear judgment that the old ways are better. Traditional presses, he thinks, make better oil than modern machines. Handpicking is better for olives than harvesting them with mechanical shakers. “I loved the oil,” he says of an award-winning French product made with precise techniques and the finest modern equipment, “but I missed the passion.” His own passion is founded on the olive’s historic connection to Mediterranean peoples and landscapes.
The book’s cover, with a fat black olive standing in for the letter O, and a group of olive trees fronting a cold green sky, will grab the attention of at least one in three passing along a bookstore aisle (过道). Those who stop to open the book and then read a passage or two, will find themselves drawn in by the story. It is a story that is rich with taste and full of passion, and just as with olives and their oil, these are the things that matter most.
32. What inspired Rosenblum’s interest in olives?
A. The trees in his yard in southern France.
B. The colorful characters in his hometown.
C. A lively story about Mediterranean crops.
D. An academic book on producing olive oil.
33. What does Rosenblum mainly express in describing olive growing and trade?
A. The scientific methods for olive farming.
B. The economic risks in olive oil production.
C. The joy of perfect harvests and regional culture.
D. The consumer protection policies in the market.
34. How does Rosenblum think of the award-winning French product?
A. It is not natural at all. B. It is not attractive to him.
C. It is good for people’s health. D. It is expensive for consumers.
35. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To recommend a great book.
B. To introduce a famous writer.
C. To advertise a kind of olive oil.
D. To promote the benefits of olives.

It was 11 pm when Alex Conrad saw a woman on Main Street Bridge. Her car was parked strangely on the shoulder, hazard lights (危险警示灯) flashing weakly. She was standing beside the driver’s door, one arm stuck inside the window, and her body bent awkwardly as if she were struggling to break free.
Instead of taking a shortcut (抄近路) across the bridge, Alex slowed down. Something felt off. (有些事感觉不对劲) . Why would anyone be stuck with their car this late — especially in March, when Wisconsin’s night wind cut through jackets like a knife? He circled back, parked 15 feet behind her car with his own hazard lights on, and stepped out.
“Hey, you okay?” he called. The woman jumped then winced (疼得一咧嘴) . She was in her 20s, with her hair messy from the wind. Her free hand grasped the car door handle so tightly that her knuckles (指关节) had turned white.
“The door — it won’t open,” she replied, pulling her arm again. “I stopped because the engine started making strange noises, and when I got out to check it, the door lock jammed. The window was halfway down, so I leaned in, trying the inside handle. Suddenly, the window rolled up. Now my arm’s stuck between the window and the frame,” Her voice cracked. Alex could see red marks forming on her arm where the metal was digging into her skin.
“I’m Alex. Let’s take it slow,” he said, walking over carefully. The woman told him her name was Mia. She’d been driving home from her part-time job at a supermarket when the car started acting up.
For the next 20 minutes, Alex tried gentle fixes. He pulled the outside handle — locked. Without hesitation, he rushed to the passenger side, opened the door, and climbed across the seat. He desperately pressed the window switch and pulled the inside handle, but nothing happened.
Mia’s arm started to shake. “What if my arm goes numb (麻木的) ?” she whispered.

【原文】
W: Good evening, everyone. I recently learnt Arabic in Cairo as part of my degree. My interest in the language was due to the passion of our Arabic lecturer and as the course progressed, my interest in the culture also grew with it. I considered studying in the Middle East, but ultimately decided on Cairo due to its energetic cultural scene. However, in the city, we faced some challenges, including difficulties finding a hotel and accommodation as we were a group of unmarried individuals. Once settled, the culture shock was intense for some of us. One member of our group returned home within the first week. Luckily I became accustomed to the life in Cairo gradually. The biggest challenge of learning Arabic is the disconnection between the written and the spoken forms. Despite these challenges, learning Arabic has been a rewarding experience, including absorbing myself in the culture and getting to know the locals and even negotiating at a local market. Highlights were being invited to a traditional Arabic meal at one of the locals’ home and being able to confidently communicate. Overall, this experience was outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to learn and grow in interesting ways. I encourage others to consider involving themselves in new cultures and languages. Thanks for listening.

【答案】32. A 33. C 34. B 35. A
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要介绍了Rosenblum所著的《Olives: The Life and Lore of a Noble Fruit》这本书,包括其创作灵感、主要内容、作者观点以及书籍封面等信息。
32.细节理解题。根据第一段中“This is not an academic book — Rosenblum is a journalist whose interest in olives was inspired by a collection of ignored trees on the property of a house he bought in southern France (这不是一本学术书籍——Rosenblum是一名记者,他对橄榄的兴趣源于他在法国南部买的一所房子的地产上有一片被忽视的树)”可知,Rosenblum对橄榄的兴趣是源于他在法国南部房子地产上被忽视的树,即他院子里的树。故选A项。
33.推理判断题。根据第二段中“He recites (列举) a series of things that can go wrong in growing and processing olives, and takes delight in the rich strong taste of the fresh-pressed oil when everything in the harvest has gone right. He expresses the flavor of life in those sunny lands where olives have supported family after family for thousands of years.
根据第三段中““I loved the oil,” he says of an award-winning French product made with precise techniques and the finest modern equipment, “but I missed the passion.” ( “我喜欢这种油,”他评价这款获奖的法国产品时说道,该产品采用精密工艺和最先进的现代设备制成,“但我怀念那份激情。” ) ”可知,Rosenblum认为这种获奖的法国产品虽然好,但缺乏传统生产方式所带来的情感吸引力。故选B项。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Those who stop to open the book and then read a passage or two, will find themselves drawn in by the story. It is a story that is rich with taste and full of passion, and just as with olives and their oil, these are the things that matter most. (那些停下来翻开书,然后读一两段的人,会发现自己被这个故事吸引住了。这是一个充满味道和激情的故事,就像橄榄和它们的油一样,这些是最重要的东西。) ”以及文章整体对《Olives: The Life and Lore of a Noble Fruit》这本书的介绍,包括创作灵感、主要内容、作者观点等,可推知,作者写这篇文章的主要目的是推荐一本好书。故选A项。

Just like the United States, Britain is divided into different areas. Britain is one of the most diverse nations in Europe with over 250 different languages being spoken in London alone. With such a various culture, adapting to it can be a challenge for anyone. ___36___
Forget the stereotypes (老套). Many of the long formed stereotypes simply have nothing to do with Britain today. Don’t think that everyone enjoys drinking tea or beer. Abandoning some old ideas of people and culture will allow you to be more open-minded and easily get into the culture.
___37___ Britain is made up of different regions that have their different traditions and languages. Understanding different cultures will help you avoid making mistakes.

___39___ Always apologize for knocking into someone, even if it was their fault. Respect people’s personal space and always wait in line. Bill Brysons’ book Notes from a Small Island is filled with many useful tips.
Accept the jokes. ___40___ Kidding, teasing, or “taking the mick” are all ways to describe making fun of someone but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Playing tricks on someone is a common way to show affection. As Britons usually put it, “You never make fun of someone you don’t like”.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式作答。
Before Alex could answer, he noticed a police car round the corner.

【答案】
