During World War II, they had to live in a secret hiding place to escape the Nazi Holocaust This was a time when the German Nazis were killing Jews. Around six million Jews died in the Holocaust. Anne’s father was a successful businessman in Germany. When the Nazis took control of the country in 1933, the Frank family moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Later, this city became unsafe, so Anne’s father prepared some secret rooms above his offices. On 6 July, 1942, Anne moved into this “secret annexe (辅楼)” with her parents, her older sister Margot, and four other Jewish people. The annexe was small and crowded. Everyone had to be very quiet. They were often hungry and always afraid of being caught. To keep busy, Anne wrote in her diary. She described her daily life and her struggles, but also wrote about her hopes and dreams. “I don’t think of all the misery” she wrote, “but of the beauty that still remains.” The family was in hiding for two years. During that time, Anne kept a diary and wrote in it almost every day. On 4 August, 1944, the annexe was discovered and everyone hiding there were sent to labour camps. Anne’s diary was discovered by friends and returned to Otto Frank after the war. The diary was originally written in Dutch. Since then, it has been published in at least 67 languages and 31 million copies have been sold. The English version is called The Diary of a Young Girl. Today, the annexe building in Amsterdam where Anne and her family hid is a museum called Anne Frank House. Although Anne’s life in hiding was extremely difficult, her diary reveals her positive attitude. For example, in 1944, she wrote, “In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.” Anne Frank’s diary has inspired teenagers everywhere. “The good news,” she wrote, “is that you don’t know how great, you can be, how much you can love, what you can accomplish, and what your potential is!” 1.Who is Anne Frank? Accompanied by typical Jin opera (晋剧) music, a red-faced performer with a long beard showed up at the hall of a high school in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. All the students in the hall stood up and craned (伸长) their necks to get a better look. In their eyes, Jin opera was something from the past. They are not alone. They thought it was a waste of time, but he loved the game. He was on his high school baseball team. A-talent scout (物色运动员的人) saw him and offered him a sports scholarship in college. The family didn’t have much money because his father was ill. His mother was a cook at the college, and Lou waited on tables to help pay his way. He started playing for the New York Yankees in 1923. His parents scraped together $14 for him to make the trip to spring training camp in New Orleans. When he got there, he started looking for a job, but the team paid him some money in advance. He was able to concentrate on practicing and improving his skills. He improved so much that two different times, he was named American League Most Valuable Player. He was called the “Iron Horse”. He played in every game for 14 years without missing even one. He played over 2,000 games. That was a record which wasn’t broken for 50 years. But then something bad happened. He could barely swing the bat and he couldn’t run around the bases any more. He knew something was wrong. He had a disease and would become unable to move. He knew he would not be able to continue playing baseball, so he resigned. The Yankees held a special day in Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939 to honor him. In his speech he said his career in baseball made him “the luckiest man on the face of the earth”. That same year he was voted into the Hall of Fame. The study divided 122 people from central Ohio who had depression, anxiety or stress into three groups. The first two groups were asked to follow methods often used in cognitive behavioral therapy (认知行为疗法) (CBT) for depression: planning social activities or cognitive reappraisal (重新评价). The social activities group was instructed to plan social activities for two days a week. Another group was instructed to write a diary for at least two days each week that helped them recognize their negative ways of viewing stressful situations and change their views in a way that could reduce depression and anxiety. Members of the third group were instructed to perform three acts of kindness — big or small acts that benefit others or make others happy — a day, for two days out of the week. Research volunteers followed their instructions for five weeks, after which their mental states were recorded. The researchers then checked with the volunteers after another five weeks to see if the methods were still effective. The findings, published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, showed that people in all three groups showed an increase in life satisfaction and a reduction of depression and anxiety levels after the study. “Compared with social activities and cognitive reappraisal, acts of kindness make people feel more connected to other people,” said David Cregg, who led the study at the Ohio State University. “Social connection is one of the parts of life most strongly linked with well-being or happiness. Performing acts of kindness seems to be one of the best ways to create those connections.” The research also showed why performing act s of kindness worked so well: It helped people take their minds off what causes their own depression or anxiety. This finding suggests that one view many people have about people with depression may be wrong. “We often think that people with depression have enough to deal with, so we don’t want to burden them by asking them to help others. But these results run counter to that,” Cregg said. 21.What did the social activities group do in the study? (no more than 10 words) 22.What did the researchers find after ten weeks? (no more than 15 words) 23.Why did performing acts of kindness work so well? (no more than 15 words) 24.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean? (no more than 5 words) 25.Of the three methods of reducing depression in the text, which one do you prefer? Please explain. (no more than 20 words). A Chinese painting is usually thought of as work of ink and water on rice paper. But a new generation of Chinese artists is drawing inspiration from Western art to develop a different style. Wu Guanzhong was one of those who had borrowed foreign ideas while staying true to his cultural traditions. Wu studied Western painting in Paris in the 1940s. He formed his own ideas about modern Western art. He started to bring together Chinese and Western elements in his work. Wu’s paintings have the colour sense and principles of Western paintings, with the spirit and tonal (色彩的) variations of ink that are typical of Chinese artwork. Under his paintbrush, natural scenery is reduced to its basics; in simple but powerful forms. Wu’s paintings now sell for record prices. He gave 72 works of art to the government of Zhejiang Province and China Academy of Art a year before he passed away. “Wu has written a special chapter in the Chinese art history of the 20th century,” said an art researcher. “His paintings go between oil painting and ink painting, and draw Western art into the poetic Chinese style.” “My tutor Jean Souverbie once said there are two paths for artists,” said Wu. “The narrow path, that is to please, and the broad one to make people’s hearts quiver. I wanted to take the broad one.” 26.Where and when did Wu Guanzhong study Western painting? (no more than 10 words) 27.What is the feature of Wu Guanzhong’s paintings? (no more than 15 words) 28.How would you describe Wu Guanzhong according to paragraph 4? (no more than 10words) 29.What does the underlined word “quiver” in the last paragraph probably mean? On Nov 24, she passed away in Tianjin at the age of 100. Yeh learned classical poetry and English from a young age. In college, she focused on poetry from the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties. After graduating, she taught at several universities in China and abroad. Yeh faced many struggles in her life. She lost her mother at the age of 17 and her eldest daughter passed away when Yeh was in middle age. “The study of poetry is not a goal that I pursue (追求), but a strength that supports me through difficulties,” she wrote at age 87. She often saw poetry through the viewpoint of her own life experiences, including the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45). She admired the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) poet Xin Qiji (1140-1207) for his determination, noting how he never gave up on getting back his home even during the hardest times. What’s more, Ye Jiaying is passionate about teaching poetry. She has traveled around the world to share the charm of classical Chinese poetry, making it accessible to people from different backgrounds. Her vivid lectures have kindled a love for poetry in the hearts of countless students and enthusiasts. Even in her 90s, Yeh continued teaching to share Chinese poetry with as many people as possible. However, I had no idea what should I do as a father. “How can I take care of such delicate (脆弱的) creatures at home without your instructions?” I asked. The nurse laughed, “Don’t worry. You will be fine. They know how to tell you their needs.” It was the beginning of a lifelong journey, David and Mark were just like a lump of clay (一块黏土), which my wife, Karen and I, to some degree, could shape. I wondered how to shape them and make them become great men — not men only with strong build and healthy bodies, but men of character, integrity (正直) and bravery, and with a positive influence. When our sons were learning to walk, I got a suggestion: Always treat your sons like the adults they are capable of becoming, and make them become men. The advice let Karen and me know what really matters in life and intentionally build values into their life. But how could we develop their character and build values into their life? Finally Karen and I decided to have meaningful dialogues about some role models while taking a walk with them in the morning. And each night, I read them a bedtime story about positive figures. One night, when I was doing so, I realized just as the story reached the climax (高潮), I saw wonder in their eyes. I realized I often missed those expressions when reading the story. So I ceased reading stories to them. Instead, I started telling them stories I created about a good boy and a bad boy facing a moral dilemma so I could watch their faces. They warmly discussed the right thing to do before I revealed how the characters handled the situation. This full-eye-contact storytelling helped us bond each other. And they gradually became the kind of people that Karen and I wanted them to be. Now thinking back, I think my greatest achievement in life is that my sons have the values Karen and I hold dear. 41.How did the author feel when being asked to take his babies home?(no more than 5words) 42.What aspect did the author focus on during his sons 'growth?(no more than 5words) 43.What does the underlined word “ceased” in Paragraph 4 mean?(One word) 44.What did the author and Karen do to build values in their sons' life?(no more than 15words) 45.Do you agree with the author's way of raising his kids? Why?(no more than 20 words) Passage 6 (24-25高一下·天津和平·期中)阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 A seed expert who brought high-quality vegetable seeds to many countries, was awarded the 2019 World Food Prize. Simon Groot of the Netherlands is credited with introducing high-quality, disease-resistance vegetable seeds to more than 60 countries including the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia. He began his search to create better vegetable seeds to help farmers in Southeast Asia in1981. Sixteen years earlier, he had made his first trip to Indonesia. There, Groot learned that vegetable seeds which were developed for the climate of Europe, did poorly when planted in the hot tropics. He thought there was a great possibility to introduce hybrid vegetables to the area. The area lacked vegetable seed developers who were trying to create hybrids for the local climate. “I noticed the seed quality in that part of world was so much below our standards and below achievable standards. I could not stand that the farmers there did not have better seeds.”Said Groot. At that time, farmers in Southeast Asia usually saved seeds from season to season. That was because the seeds available for sale were often old. Those seeds were usually from Europe or North America and did not grow well in their tropical climate. This meant that the farmers ended up with smaller crops, and lower quality that changed greatly from season to season. The plant also could easily become infected with diseases. Groot partnered with seed trader Benito Domingo of the Philippines. They put together a team of seed researchers and growers from Wageninge University in the Netherlands and the University of the Philippines. Within a few years, they developed a hybrid bitter gourd (苦瓜) that sold successfully. Then they modified a tomato plant, followed by eggplants, pumpkins and leafy vegetables. The early success led to the start of the East-West Seed Company, which now has more than 970 improved seeds of 60 vegetable crops. Over the past 40 years, the discoveries have led to the creation of a tropical vegetable seed industry aimed at small farmers. The tropical seeds are now spreading into Asia, Africa and Latin America. It is estimated that the company’s seeds are used by 20 million farmers each year in more than 60 countries. 46.Why was Groot awarded the 2019 World Food Prize ? (No more than 10 words.) 47.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?(no more than 10 words) 48.What made the plants not grow well in Southeast Asia in the past? (No more than 15words) 49.What does the underlined word in the Paragraph 4 most probably mean?(Only 1 word) 50.What do you think of Groot’s work? And give your reasons. Lou Gehrig was one of baseball’s greatest players. His parents didn’t want him to make a career of baseball. Or: Their methods worked effectively on three groups. 23. 根据倒数第二段中“The research also showed why performing acts of kindness worked so well: It helped people take their minds off what causes their own depression or anxiety. (研究还揭示了为什么行善效果如此之好:它帮助人们转移注意力,不再纠结于导致自身抑郁或焦虑的原因。)”可知,行善效果如此之好的原因是它帮助人们转移注意力,不再纠结于导致自身抑郁或焦虑的原因。故答案为Because it helped people take their minds off what causes their own depression or anxiety. 24. 根据最后一段中划线词所在句“We often think that people with depression have enough to deal with, so we don’t want to burden them by asking them to help others. But these results run counter to that (我们常常认为抑郁症患者已经承受了太多,所以不想让他们再通过帮助他人来增加负担。但这些结果却与此run counter to)”可知,我们原本认为不应该让抑郁症患者帮助他人,但研究结果却表明这样做是有益的,即与我们的想法相反,所以“run counter to”意为“与……相反”。故答案为Are the opposite of. 25. 示例一:根据倒数第三段中David Cregg 所说的“Compared with social activities and cognitive reappraisal, acts of kindness make people feel more connected to other people (与社交活动和认知重新评价相比,善意行为让人们感觉与他人的联系更紧密)”可知,我更喜欢行善,因为这是一种与他人建立联系的简单方式,能让每个人都微笑。 I prefer to perform acts of kindness. But a new generation of Chinese artists is drawing inspiration from Western art to develop a different style. Wu Guanzhong was one of those who had borrowed foreign ideas while staying true to his cultural traditions. Wu studied Western painting in Paris in the 1940s. At the school’s 2014 homecoming. football game,a group of kids set off (点燃)  fireworks in honor of Lyla. The school district raised money for Lyla’s treatment. They were finding more loving ways to support someone with cancer.(整个小镇都被这个消息震惊了。 Suffering from disease is painful. However the world is full of love and care, which can make us brave. I got excited at the news told by the nurse that we could make preparations for taking our new born twins, David and Mark, home with us. Why?(no more than 20 words) 【答案】41.Excited but worried. 42.Character and values. 43.Stopped. 44.They had meaningful dialogues about role models and told moral stories. 45.Yes, because it focuses on character and values, which are essential for life. 根据文章第一段“I got excited at the news told by the nurse that we could make preparations for taking our new born twins, David and Mark, home with us. However, I had no idea what should I do as a father.(听到护士说我可以准备将双胞胎David和Mark带回家时,我非常激动。然而,我却不知道作为父亲应该做什么)”可知,作者得知可以带双胞胎回家时感到兴奋,但也担心自己不知道如何照顾孩子,故答案为Excited but worried. 42.考查细节理解。根据文章第二段“I wondered how to shape them and make them become great men — not men only with strong build and healthy bodies, but men of character, integrity (正直) and bravery, and with a positive influence.(我想知道如何塑造他们,使他们成为伟大的人——不仅是一个健壮、身体健康的人,而且是有品格、正直、勇敢和积极影响的人)”可知,作者希望将儿子培养成有品格、正直、勇敢且有正能量的人,因此在儿子的成长中,作者看重的是品格和价值观,故答案Character and values. 43. 根据划线词ceased后文的内容“Instead, I started telling them stories I created about a good boy and a bad boy facing a moral dilemma so I could watch their faces.(相反,我开始给他们讲我编的关于一个好孩子和一个坏男孩面临道德困境的故事,这样我就可以观察他们的表情)”可知,划线词ceased后文提到,作者开始给儿子讲自己编的故事,故此处划线词ceased意为“停止”,我“停止”给他们读故事,而是开始给儿子讲自己编的故事,故答案为Stopped. 44. 根据文章第四段“Instead, I started telling them stories I created about a good boy and a bad boy facing a moral dilemma so I could watch their faces. They warmly discussed the right thing to do before I revealed how the characters handled the situation. This full-eye-contact storytelling helped us bond each other. And they gradually became the kind of people that Karen and I wanted them to be.(相反,我开始给他们讲我编的一个关于一个好孩子和一个坏男孩面临道德困境的故事,这样我就可以观察他们的表情。在我透露角色是如何处理这种情况之前,他们热烈地讨论了正确的做法,这种全方位的眼神交流故事帮助我们建立了联系。他们逐渐成为了Karen和我希望他们成为的那种人)”可知,作者和妻子通过讨论榜样人物和讲述道德故事来培养孩子的价值观,因此答案为They had meaningful dialogues about role models and told moral stories. 45. 如根据文章第四段“Instead, I started telling them stories I created about a good boy and a bad boy facing a moral dilemma so I could watch their faces. They warmly discussed the right thing to do before I revealed how the characters handled the situation. This full-eye-contact storytelling helped us bond each other. And they gradually became the kind of people that Karen and I wanted them to be.(相反,我开始给他们讲我编的一个关于一个好孩子和一个坏男孩面临道德困境的故事,这样我就可以观察他们的表情。在我透露角色是如何处理这种情况之前,他们热烈地讨论了正确的做法,这种全方位的眼神交流故事帮助我们建立了联系。他们逐渐成为了Karen和我希望他们成为的那种人)”可知,作者和妻子通过讨论榜样人物和讲述道德故事来培养孩子的价值观,我同意作者培养孩子的做法,因为他重点培养孩子品格和价值观,这在生活中是很重要的。故答案为Yes, because it focuses on character and values, which are essential for life. A seed expert who brought high-quality vegetable seeds to many countries, was awarded the 2019 World Food Prize. (No more than 25 words) 【答案】46.Because he brought high-quality vegetable seeds to many countries. 47.The reason for Groot to start his search. 48.The seeds available for sale were often old and unsuitable for the tropical climate. 49.Improved/Changed. 50.I think Groot’s work is meaningful because it has helped farmers and improved vegetable production and quality, contributing to global food security. 根据第一段中“A seed expert who brought high-quality vegetable seeds to many countries, was awarded the 2019 World Food Prize. Simon Groot of the Netherlands is credited with introducing high-quality, disease-resistance vegetable seeds to more than 60 countries including the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia.(一位将优质蔬菜种子带到许多国家的种子专家获得了2019年世界粮食奖。荷兰的Simon Groot因向包括菲律宾、泰国和印度尼西亚在内的60多个国家推广优质、抗病蔬菜种子而受到赞誉)”可知,Groot获得2019年世界粮食奖是因为他将优质蔬菜种子带到了许多国家。故答案为Because he brought high-quality vegetable seeds to many countries. 47. 根据第二段中“He began his search to create better vegetable seeds to help farmers in Southeast Asia in1981. Sixteen years earlier, he had made his first trip to Indonesia. There, Groot learned that vegetable seeds which were developed for the climate of Europe, did poorly when planted in the hot tropics.(1981年,他开始寻找更好的蔬菜种子来帮助东南亚的农民。十六年前,他首次踏上了前往印度尼西亚的旅程。在那里,Groot了解到,那些为欧洲气候条件而培育的蔬菜种子,在炎热的热带地区种植时表现欠佳)”以及本段剩余内容可知,本段主要讲述了Groot开始寻找更好的蔬菜种子的原因。故答案为The reason for Groot to start his search. 48. 根据第三段中“That was because the seeds available for sale were often old. Those seeds were usually from Europe or North America and did not grow well in their tropical climate.(那是因为可供出售的种子通常都很旧。这些种子通常来自欧洲或北美,在热带气候下生长得不好)”可知,过去植物在东南亚生长不好的原因是可买到的种子通常都很旧,且这些种子通常来自欧洲或北美,不适合在热带气候下生长。故答案为The seeds available for sale were often old and unsuitable for the tropical climate. 49. 根据划线词前一句话“Within a few years, they developed a hybrid bitter gourd (苦瓜) that sold successfully.(在几年之内,他们培育出了一种杂交苦瓜,并且这种苦瓜成功上市销售)”以及“Then(然后)”及“a tomato plant, followed by eggplants, pumpkins and leafy vegetables.(一种番茄植株,接着是茄子、南瓜和绿叶蔬菜。)” 故答案为Improved/Changed. 50. I think Groot’s work is meaningful because it has helped farmers and improved vegetable production and quality, contributing to global food security.
