But three years ago, when I was a 13-year-old boy, I thought adults knew nothing about life. That warm spring day, Dad came home holding a small apple sapling (树苗). “Let’s plant it together,” he said. I shook my head. “Why waste time? The store sells apples ready to eat!” But he smiled, quietly opened the roots. For weeks, I complained as we watered the weak tree. “It’ll never grow!” I said angrily when the strong summer storms nearly made it fall over. Father simply saved it with bamboo sticks, saying, “Good things take time, just like building a strong house.” At that time, I didn’t get what he meant. Our final exams were at the end of the term. Since I failed math, I tore (撕) my test paper angrily. “I’m done!” Father found me sitting next to our knee-high tree. Instead of giving long speeches, he pointed at its new leaves. “Do you remember when it almost didn’t make it through the storm? Now it’s standing tall, all because it refused to give up!” I realized it all of a sudden. I began to study just as the tree grew, slowly yet surely. My father quietly cheered me on. During late-night studying, he’d put energy drinks beside my books. Even without saying anything, his strong hand on my shoulder said it all. This morning, I found the first red apple shining among the leaves. Dad gently handed it to me after picking it. “Hard work makes it sweet,” he smiled. The apple tasted like someone had poured patience, love, and a warm hug into it. 1.Why did the boy complain about planting the tree? A.Because he disliked apples. B.Because he distrusted his father. C.Because he thought it wasted time. D.Because he believed the tree would die. 2.What does “I’m done!” mean in the story? A.I want to give up. B.I plan to try again. C.I have to study hard. D.I need to take breaks. 3.What is the correct order of the following events? ① The writer started to study hard.               ② The writer failed his math exam. ③ An apple sapling was brought home.        ④ The apple tree went through the storm. A.① ③ ② ④ B.③ ④ ② ① C.③ ② ④ ① D.④ ② ③ ① 4.Which words best describe the father’s character? A.Patient and wise. B.Quiet and polite. C.Serious and strict. D.Kind and humorous. 5.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE? A.I tore my test paper angrily because I did badly in math. B.Father pointed at the new leaves to show the tree made it through the storm C.What makes the apple sweet is hard work. D.Father loved me so much that he didn’t say anything to put pressure on me. 6.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A.Son’s Strict Rules B.Life’s Sweet Lessons C.Father’s Gardening Project D.The Apple’s Nice Taste. Choose the best answer.(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案) Technology for Toddlers A new school has opened recently. Its pupils file into class to start their lessons, turn on their computers and follow their teacher’s instructions. For an hour, they are taught how to use the mouse, the keyboard and the computer. Nothing unusual about that, you might think; except that these pupils are toddlers, aged just two or three. We asked two experts their opinions on the growing phenomenon of “technology for toddlers”: Do you think we should teach computer skills to very young children? ● YES Judy Clarke, director of technology, York College At my college, we think that “_____.” Although the usual age for the national school exams is 16, we put our best pupils forward for exams if we think they are ready. They might be just seven years old. Having had great success with these courses, we began to think about the “Technology for Toddlers” classes. They are aimed at giving the pre-school pupils a head start not only in technology skills, but also in writing, reading and communication using the computer. Apart from the actual lessons, we also encourage parents to get the children to practise their new skills at home. Parents say to me all the time, “Sarah can count up to 30 and is ahead of her peers” or “Jack has gained so much confidence from your classes.” Comments like these make it all worthwhile for me. Some people may be critical, but I would argue that it’s a crime to hold children back. Most children love computers and they learn quickly. Starting young means they won’t have to waste time in their secondary school years catching up with all the computer skills they need. ● NO Alan Jackson, educational psychologist, Cardiff I’ve worked as an educational psychologist (教育心理学家) for many years and I must say that I’m very concerned about this trend for encouraging younger and younger children to use computers. The negative (负面的) aspects of staring at a screen for a long time at a young age are obvious. The lack of physical exercise, for example, can lead to obesity (肥胖) and the lack of interaction (互动交流) with real people can lead to problems with speech development. These are just two of the problems, but I could go on and on. It is bad enough for older children, but the idea of children as young as two being actively encouraged to go to computer lessons appalls me. I feel sorry for these children who clearly need to be running around and climbing trees with their friends. To my mind, two parties are to blame: the colleges who run these courses and the parents of these children. They should be ashamed of their inability to think about the short and long-term effects on the children. As far as I can see, the former is just interested in publicity (宣传) and profit, and the latter purely in satisfying their own egos (自我价值感). 1.Choose the best phrase to fill in the blank in paragraph 3: At my college, we think that “_____.” A.practice makes perfect B.it’s never too old to learn C.it’s never too young to start D.nothing is impossible to a willing heart 2.The underlined phrase “head start” in paragraph 3 most probably means “_____.” A.warning B.weakness C.advantage D.instruction 3.Judy Clarke uses comments about Sarah and Jack to show ________. A.how much she loves her students B.how hard Sarah and Jack have worked C.why parents should feel proud of their children D.very young children can gain something useful from “Technology for Toddlers” classes 4.What does Alan Jackson mean by saying “but I could go on and on”? A.He thinks toddlers have much to learn in addition to computer technology. B.He will keep studying the matter of teaching toddlers computer technology. C.He thinks there are a lot more problems of very young children learning computer technology. D.He still has much to do to deal with the problem of the popularity of technology for toddlers. 5.The underlined word “appalls” in paragraph 4 can be replaced by “________.” A.amazes B.attracts C.frightens D.varies 6.Which of the following statements are true? ① Alan Jackson probably teaches at the new school for toddlers. ② Judy Clarke is not sure what her school is doing is right or not. ③ According to Alan Jackson, play is more important for young children. ④ According to Judy Clarke, young children should be encouraged to learn computer technology. A.①② B.③④ C.②③ D.①④ They are children of the stars. They are not deaf, but they sometimes ignore information from outside. They are not blind, but they sometimes have no eye contact with people around them. They are not dumb, but they sometimes don’t speak to anyone. They are autistic (自闭症的) children, living alone in their own worlds. This winter holiday, I took part in a public welfare activity about autism (孤独症) with my classmates from Feb 17 to 18. The moment we stepped into the autism centre, I was shocked by what I saw. With their heads hanging down, most children stayed silent, paying no attention to what was going on. When we introduced ourselves, they didn’t look up at us until their parents had reminded them to do so again and again. At that time, I knew that they would need a great deal of attention. To my surprise, when they were doing outdoor activities, the kids were energetic and active. Whether they were doing morning exercises or playing games, every child wore a shining smile on his or her face. We played the games “The eagle catches the chickens” and “The fisherman”, which brought us closer than before. The children started to look at us with curious eyes and began to communicate with us. In art class, they even actively pulled our fingers and pointed to their pieces of paper. During our two days of activities, we not only played with these autistic children, but also made every effort to help them. Our group members found as much information as possible on the Internet and discussed every possible way in which we could enter their hearts. In addition, in order to improve their living conditions, we made an online donation. I felt the seed of love blooming in me when I received money from others. Children from the stars need special attention. Let’s do our best to understand them. 1.What’s the main idea of the first paragraph? A.The love of the writer. B.The description of our world. C.The stars of the sky. D.The behaviors of autistic children. 2.When the writer took part in a public activity, he knew autistic children ________. A.needed a great deal of attention B.kept talking all the time C.paid more attention to eating D.looked up at their parents 3.The writer and his classmates were together with the autistic children ________. A.for one day B.for two days C.for three days D.for four days 4.According to the passage, ________ can’t make autistic children energetic and active. A.outdoor activities B.introducing ourselves C.having an art class D.playing games with them 5.What does the underlined word “blooming” most probably mean in Chinese? 6.In the last paragraph, the writer mainly suggests that we should _________. A.try to understand autistic children B.make an online donation C.play with autistic children D.give away lots of money Sony has released the follow-up to their popular noise cancelling (降噪) headphones, the Sony WH-1000XM6, and we were excited to try them out. Here’s what we found. One of the biggest changes is that these headphones can fold. The old model could not fold, which made them hard to carry. Now they fit into a smaller case, making them perfect for travel. Sony also made the headband wider, which makes the headphones much more comfortable. This helps spread the weight better across your head. The battery life is good but not amazing. You can listen for up to 30 hours with noise cancellation on, or 40 hours with it off. The best part is that they charge (充电) very quickly. Just three minutes of charging gives you 3 hours of listening time. You can keep listening while the headphones are charging. The noise cancellation technology is excellent. Sony added four more microphones to make a total of 12 around the headphones. This helps block outside noise much better. The headphones work especially well on airplanes, blocking engine noise while you enjoy your music. The sound quality is very impressive. The bass sounds are deep and powerful, while the higher sounds are clear and detailed. Music sounds rich and full, with great balance between low and high sounds. Whether you listen to rock music, classical pieces, or podcasts, everything sounds amazing. The headphones handle different types of audio content perfectly, from quiet voices to loud drums. Overall, the Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones are excellent. They are more comfortable, easier to carry, and sound better than many other headphones. They cost more money than basic headphones, but the quality and features make them worth buying if you love good audio. 1.Why can people carry the new headphones easily? A.they can fold B.the headbands are wider C.they are lighter D.they cancel a lot of noise 2.How long can you use the headphones if you turn on noise cancellation? A.3 hours. B.12 hours. C.30 hours. D.40 hours. 3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.The headphones can’t be used while charging. B.The headphones have 8 microphones in total. C.The headphones are especially suitable for air travel. D.The battery life is the best of the headphones. 4.The underlined word “handle” in paragraph 5 probably means ________. A.take hold of B.keep off C.go through D.deal with 5.The new headphones are worth buying NOT because they ________. A.are easier to carry B.have excellent sound quality C.are more comfortable D.are much cheaper 6.The writer’s main purpose is to ________. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and World Anti-Fascist War. Many works about this history are being shown, like films, plays and dances. Among them, the movie “The Nanjing Photo Studio” (English name: “Dead to Rights”) has caught a lot of attention. Directed by Shen Ao, the film is based on real photos that show the terrible things Japanese soldiers did during the Nanjing Massacre (大屠杀). The story happens when Japanese soldiers took control of Nanjing. To stay alive, a group of Chinese people hid inside a photo studio. To survive, they had to help a Japanese army photographer develop his pictures. But while doing this, they discovered something shocking. The photo films contained clear proof of the awful crimes Japanese soldiers committed (犯罪) all over the city. The group decided they must let the world know the truth. So they secretly kept the films and risked their lives to get them out safely. The story in the movie was connected to a real person. In 1938, a 15-year-old boy named Luo Jin worked in Huadong Photo Studio in Nanjing. Brave and clever, he secretly made over 30 copies of photos showing Japanese crimes. He put 16 photos into a book and drew a red heart with blood and the Chinese word “Chi” (which means “shame”) on the cover. Later, a young man named Wu Xuan kept the book safe. After eight years, the photos became strong proof of the crimes and were shown to the world. Director Shen Ao said the reason why he made the film is that few people know how these important photos were saved. Dead to Rights is not only a movie, but also helps us remember painful history so that we work harder to make our country stronger. Since its release, “Dead to Rights” has received high praise. Many viewers are deeply moved by the movie. They say it makes them better understand the pain of that time and respect those brave people more. The film not only shows a piece of history but also reminds us of the importance of never forgetting national sufferings and the value of peace. It is a meaningful work of art that helps pass on Chinese culture and spirit. The evidence they saved reminds us to remember history and cherish peace. 1.The text talks about the 80th year of two victories. When did they happen? A.In 1935. B.In 1945. C.In 1955. (台词) “One of my actors is sick! He has just one line and you’re the only one who fits his clothes!” One afternoon, the school drama director suddenly shouted to me. She seemed so nervous and worried that I felt sorry for her and said, “OK”. “You will be fine. It’s easy!” She said, but it wasn’t easy at all. On the stage, four other actors and actresses spoke their lines, and I opened my mouth. Nothing came out. I couldn’t even breathe. I just wanted to leave. The next thing I knew, I was running off the stage. As I was running off the stage, I accidentally knocked over a glass of grape juice that was on a table. The purple juice hit the girl next to me—Andrea, the leading actress of the drama. She gave me a nasty look. I thought she was going to kill me! But then, Andrea quickly said, “Darling, you’re so silly! Let’s toast (干杯) to my darling’s silliness! Cheers! She grabbed another glass of grape juice and drank it.” The other actors quickly followed Andrea’s lead and saved the scene. The audience thought my mistake was part of the play! I apologized to everyone after the play. To my surprise, they were not angry with me. They told me, “It’s a part of being on stage.” I would be wrong, but I think I liked being on stage. By: Andrew  Posted at 09: 55 p.m., 27th May Happy birthday to your son, Kerry! I did not have a good dining experience today. The man who sat next to me was talking with his mouth full. His food flew out of his mouth to the table and my plate! I think he’s really rude. By: Winnie  Posted at 10: 08 a.m., 28th May I have also met some people who had bad manners. For example, they coughed without covering their mouths. Some of them put all their shopping bags on the chairs even when they saw someone waiting. I think they should think more about others! When I see someone who does something inappropriate at a restaurant, I usually ask the waiters to stop him. You guys may try this next time. TEENAGERS    Sign in    Sign up    START A TOPIC John posted 2 hours ago I will finish high school soon, and of course I’m thinking about the big question: what next? Maybe it’s a bit late to start thinking about this, but that’s how I am. I think I’ll do well in my exams, so maybe I’ll go to university or college to get more qualifications (证书)—but I’ve been asking myself if it’s better to just find a job and start a career (职业生涯). On the other hand, if I do go on to study further, should I do it right away or perhaps take a year off—a “gap year”? Helpful advice and ideas, please! Thanks. Amy posted 28 minutes ago Hi, John. I’m doing a gap year right now. I saved some money and went to Thailand, but after two months of “holiday”, I got bored and the money was running out. Then I found a volunteer medical organization that helps people in poor areas of the country and they let me join as a driver. Now I’m working, trying to learn Thai (I spend up to an hour a day practising with friends) and learning a lot about myself. I’ve made a decision, too—when I go home, I’m going to study medicine, to be a doctor or a nurse. So my advice? Do a gap year, but don’t just travel around—do some volunteer work somewhere. For me, it’s been life-changing. Pauline posted 1 hour ago Hi there! Here’s my advice. Do what feels right for you now, but keep an open mind and be prepared to change. Some of my friends set off to travel after school, but I didn’t have the courage. I just went to university. It was OK and I was having a good time. Then one day, an old friend from school phoned me and said he was going to start an online company and asked me to join him. I considered for a long time. Then I gave up the university course and went to work with him. It was the best thing I had ever done. I didn’t plan to leave university, but I took the chance to try something different, and I don’t regret it. 1.What is the big question John is thinking about? A.What should I do next? B.How can I finish school? C.When should I start to work? D.Which university should I go to? 2.How does John feel when he thinks about the big question? A.Excited. B.Nervous. C.Unsure. D.Unhappy. 3.Which part of Amy’s gap year experience influenced her most? A.Running out of money during the trip. B.Joining a volunteer organization. C.Practicing Thai with her friends. D.Travelling in Thailand for two months. 4.In Amy’s words, what does the underlined word “it” refer to? A.Travelling around Thailand for a year. B.Saving money before the gap year. C.Making a decision to study medicine. D.Taking on a meaningful gap year. 5.What does Pauline think is important when making decisions after leaving school? A.Being open to change. B.Earning money first. C.Following a strict plan. D.Traveling instead of studying. 6.Which advice would John probably receive from both Amy and Pauline? A.Always stick to your first plan. B.Learning a new language is key. C.Trying new things can be useful. D.Avoiding taking risks is better. StreetFun ☆Who are we? 根据文章第3段“I shook my head. ‘Why waste time? The store sells apples ready to eat!’” 根据文章第5段“Since I failed math, I tore (撕) my test paper angrily. ‘I’m done!’”,结合上下文作者的沮丧情绪,可以推断出这句话的意思是“我想放弃了”。故选A。 3. 故选A。 5. 根据第6段“Even without saying anything, his strong hand on my shoulder said it all.” Choose the best answer.(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案) Technology for Toddlers A new school has opened recently. 根据第三段中“they might be just seven years old...the ‘Technology for Toddlers’ classes. They are aimed at giving the pre-school pupils a head start...”和“Starting young means... all the computer skills they need.” 根据“...giving the pre-school pupils a head start not only in technology skills, but also in writing, reading and communication using the computer.” 根据“Parents say to me all the time, ‘Sarah can count up to 30 and is ahead of her peers’ or ‘Jack has gained so much confidence from your classes.’ Comments like these make it all worthwhile for me.” 根据“The negative (负面的) aspects of staring at a screen...can lead to obesity (肥胖) and the lack of interaction (互动交流) with real people... the problems, but I could go on and on.”可知,“but I could go on and on”的意思是,他认为幼童学习电脑技术还有很多其他问题。故选C。 5. 根据“I feel sorry for these children who clearly need to be running around and climbing trees with their friends”以及后文的批评可知,“appalls”表达的是强烈的负面感受,意为“使震惊、使反感”,与“frightens”在语境中最为接近。故选C。 6. 根据“...the idea of children as young as two being actively encouraged to go to computer lessons appalls me. I feel sorry for these children who clearly need to be running around and climbing trees with their friends.” 根据Judy Clarke的观点“Most children love computers and they learn quickly. Starting young means they won’t have to waste time in their secondary school years catching up with all the computer skills they need.” B。 They are children of the stars. A.try to understand autistic children B.make an online donation C.play with autistic children D.give away lots of money 【答案】 根据“They are autistic (自闭症的) children, living alone in their own worlds.” 根据“At that time, I knew that they would need a great deal of attention.” 故选A。 3. 根据“During our two days of activities...” 根据“When we introduced ourselves, they didn’t look up at us until their parents had reminded them to do so again and again.”可知,当作者他们做自我介绍时,孩子们低头沉默、需家长反复提醒才抬头回应;根据“when they were doing outdoor activities, the kids were energetic and active. Whether they were doing morning exercises or playing games, every child wore a shining smile on his or her face...In art class, they even actively pulled our fingers...” 根据“I felt the seed of love blooming in me...” 根据“Let’s do our best to understand them.” A。 Sony has released the follow-up to their popular noise cancelling (降噪) headphones, the Sony WH-1000XM6, and we were excited to try them out. A.In 1935. B.In 1945. C.In 1955. The audience thought my mistake was part of the play!” 根据第四段“The audience thought my mistake was part of the play!” 根据最后一段“I would be wrong, but I think I liked being on stage. I think I will try again.” A。 Welcome to Top Discovery Space (TDS)! When we cut the cake, a band played the birthday song for us. A waitress gave my son a little gift. He was so happy. It was a really nice experience! By: Natalie  Posted at 02: 57 p.m., 28th May I went to a restaurant in City Centre last week. It was so special! It looked like a classroom and you could draw on the tables. His food flew out of his mouth to the table and my plate!”、“For example, they coughed without covering their mouths.”以及“Some of them put all their shopping bags on the chairs even when they saw someone waiting.” Natalie的帖子“I went to a restaurant in City Centre last week. It was so special! It looked like a classroom and you could draw on the tables. The lunch set looked like a kid’s box lunch. I took many photos there!” Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am interested in the restaurant you recommended, Natalie! I like trying different restaurants because I like eating!” C。 TEENAGERS    Sign in    Sign up    START A TOPIC John posted 2 hours ago I will finish high school soon, and of course I’m thinking about the big question: what next? 根据“and of course I’m thinking about the big question: what next?” 故选A。 2. 根据“but I’ve been asking myself if it’s better to just find a job and start a career (职业生涯).
