Oliver looked around. They were in a large room. The walls and ceiling were black with age and dirt. A man was cooking some food. The man had an ugly face and dirty red hair. There were beds on the floor. Four or five boys, about the same age as the Dodger, sat around a table.
“Fagin,” said the Dodger to the man, “this is my new friend Oliver Twist.” Fagin smiled, then he shook Oliver’s hand and said, “We are very glad to meet you, Oliver.”

①A forest is like a football team, where every player has his role to play. Just as players must work together to win a game, plants and animals in a forest need one another to live better. We call this kind of relationship an ecosystem
②There are three main roles in an ecosystem: producers (生产者), consumers (消费者), and decomposers (分解者). Producers, such as trees and plants, create their own food by using sunlight. They are the start of the ecosystem, giving energy to all other living things.
③Consumers, like giraffes, need producers for food. They eat leaves or other plants to live. However, consumers can also become food for other animals. For example, lions kill giraffes for food. This creates a food chain (食物链), where energy is moved from one animal to another.
④When animals die, their bodies are broken down by decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi (细菌和真菌). Decomposers turn dead plants and animals into nutrients (营养), which enrich the soil and help new plants grow. This process keeps the ecosystem going on.
⑤Ecosystems come in many shapes and sizes. They can be as small as a garden or as large as the sea. The key thing is that an ecosystem has to keep its balance. For example, if there were no lions, giraffes would eat too many leaves. This would be bad for the trees and make it difficult for giraffes to find food.
⑥However, ecosystems are weak and can be easily broken. Natural events, such as droughts (干旱), floods, or fires, can break the balance. These changes can make it difficult for some species (物种) to live.
⑦Human activities can also be harmful to ecosystems. For example, cutting down forests, pollution and hunting too much can take away homes for many animals and reduce the number of them.
⑧Ecosystems are like teams where everyone matters (要紧). They need balance and teamwork to stay healthy. Awareness (意识) and education are important for saving ecosystems. First of all, we need to understand how everything is connected and learn about the roles of different species, so that we can make better choices to reduce harm. Then, taking action is more important.
Simple things like planting trees and reducing waste can help. By protecting ecosystems and understanding their challenges, we can make a better planet for the future.
37.The writer explains “consumers” in paragraph 3 ________.
A.by asking questions B.by giving examples C.by giving facts D.by telling stories
38.Which “balance” in the following sentences has the closest meaning as the underlined word “balance” in paragraph 5?
A.You have to balance the good points of studying in China and in the US.
B.The shopkeeper put the apples on the balance to see how heavy they were.
C.Good balance is important when riding a bicycle, or you might fall.
D.A good eating habit should balance different kinds of food to keep your body healthy.
39.The purpose (目的) of this passage is to ________.
A.tell a story about animals in a forest
B.explain how ecosystems work and why they are important
C.describe the history of natural events and their effects on ecosystems
D.encourage people to protect ecosystems by understanding their balance
40.The best structure of this passage should be ________.
A. B. C. D.
Do you know anything about the Moon? How much do you know about it? Do you want to go there? Scientists have told us so much about the Moon.
They have discovered that the Moon is an unfriendly place. There is no air or water. There are only dust (沙尘) and rocky (岩石构成的) mountains covering its surface. 41 When the Sun shines in the day, the temperature is very high. Daytime temperatures can reach 127℃ when the Sun shines, hot enough to boil water! But at night, it drops to -173℃, colder than Antarctica.
42 As we know, sound can only travel in the air, but there is no air on the Moon. Without air, sound cannot travel. Although two astronauts stood close, they would need radios to communicate. 43
From the Moon, Earth looks like a bright blue-and-white ball hanging in the dark sky. The scene would be wonderful. 44
Though challenging, China has made amazing progress in exploring the Moon. In 2013, Chang’e-3 became the first Chinese spacecraft to soft-land on the Moon, carrying the Yutu rover that studied lunar soil for 31 months. In 2024, Chang’e-6 successfully brought back 1.935 kilograms of moon samples, helping scientists discover new facts about the Moon’s volcanic history. 45
Would you like to join future missions to build a lunar research station?
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使文章意思通顺、内容完整。
A.The Moon is also a silent (无声的) world.
B.Even a loud crash (碰撞声) would be completely silent!
C.These achievements show China’s growing space technology.
D.The temperature of the Moon is different from day to night.

Oliver decided to leave the workhouse for London. “No one will find me in London,” he thought. On the first day, he walked and walked for twenty miles, then he fell asleep, tired and hungry. He walked for another seven days, begging for food and water. Then in the afternoon, he walked slowly and sadly into a small town near London and sat down to rest. His feet were bleeding (流血) and he was covered in dirt. A boy saw him and came to talk to him.
“Hello, where have you been?” asked the boy.
The boy was about the same age as Oliver, but he was a ________ boy. He had a large hat and he wore a man’s coat, which came nearly to his feet. He was just a dirty little boy but he acted and talked like an adult.
Oliver explained he had walked for a few days and was very hungry.
The boy bought Oliver some food. Then, as Oliver ate hungrily, they talked.
Oliver told the boy that he was going to London and had no place to stay.
“I know an old gentleman who lives in London,” said the boy. “He’ll give you a place to stay for nothing.”
“Really?” said Oliver with his eyes shining brightly.
Oliver was thankful for the boy’s offer. The boy, Jack Dawkins, and Oliver soon became new friends, but Jack’s friends called him the Dodger.
Late that night they reached London. Then Dodger led Oliver to a narrow smelly street, and into a house. They climbed the stairs and went into a room at the top.
After that, they all had supper. Oliver ate a lot and drank a nightcap that Fagin prepared specially for him. Then he fell into a deep sleep with a full stomach and satisfaction (满足).

A.by asking questions B.by giving examples C.by giving facts D.by telling stories

C.Good balance is important when riding a bicycle, or you might fall.
D.A good eating habit should balance different kinds of food to keep your body healthy.

It’s even more helpful for us to grow up. It’s not enough for us to just get good grades at school. We should learn how to help others because helping others is helping ourselves.
