It has been more than 30 years since China started to build its BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS, 北斗卫星导航系统). The system took its name from the Big Dipper (北斗七星), a group of seven bright stars in the sky.
In 1994, China began building the BDS, so it wouldn’t have to use navigation systems from other countries. It would be a lot safer this way. In 2020, the BDS was completed. This achievement made China the third country to have its own navigation system after the US and Russia.
The BDS does not just show where you are. It is the first navigation system to let you send messages where there is no phone signal (信号). Many years ago, a young man called Jim wanted to study the violin at a famous school in France. He practised for a long time and went to the examination with hope. However, he failed the examination.

It has been more than 30 years since China started to build its BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS, 北斗卫星导航系统). The system took its name from the Big Dipper (北斗七星), a group of seven bright stars in the sky.
