C1
What do you know about the bass fishing season?

He was eleven years old and lived on an island in the middle of a lake. On the day before the bass season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening. He tied a small bait(鱼饵;诱饵) and practised casting. When his pole doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other end. Finally, he lifted the fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, and it was a bass.
The father looked at the handsome fish. Then he lit a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 p.m. —two hours before the season opened. “You’ll have to put it back, son,” he said. “Dad!” cried the boy. “There will be other fish,” said his father. “Not as big as this one,” cried the boy. He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, the boy could tell by his father’s voice that he had no choice. He slowly worked the hook out of the lip of the bass and lowered it into the black water. The fish gave a wave with its tail and disappeared.

That was 34 years ago. Today, the boy is a successful architect in New York City. He often takes his own son and daughters to go fishing at the same place. He has never again caught such a huge fish as the one he caught that night long ago, but he does see that same fish—again and again.

How do you like the father’s decision?
Read
C2
(Answers may vary.)
I think his decision is good because it is the best way to teach his boy what he should do. When the kid was told to put the fish back, the decision would make a fresh and noble impression on him. The key to success is to remain truthful and honest even if no one is watching.
Answer the question.

Q3 What would happen if his father allowed the boy to keep the fish?

Q4 Why does he often take his son and daughters to go fishing at the same place now?
Because it is the place where he has once caught the largest bass. He takes his children there to teach them about the importance of following rules and making good choices. By taking them to fish and sharing his values, he passes on the lesson he learned from his father.

Once there was a rich baker(面包师). He called the poorest children in town to his store and gave one loaf(条) of bread to each of them and told them to come back every day for bread.
Rather than be thankful to the baker’s kindness, many of the children fought about who would get the largest loaf. They were not pleased with their present poor life and just thought about themselves.
However, there was one little girl in the crowd (人群) who was different from others. Day after day, patiently, she waited for the others to stop fighting, and she took the smallest loaf. Then, she thanked the baker and shared it with her family.
One day, while slicing(将……切片) the bread, her mother found several silver coins inside the loaf. Quite surprised, she showed her daughter what she had discovered in the bread. So, the next day, the children went back to the store. The little girl also returned. She showed the silver coins to the baker and said, “Sir, we found the money inside the loaf of bread that you gave to us. You must have accidentally dropped the coins while you were baking the loaf.
“I don’t make a mistake. These are yours to keep, as a prize for your patience and honesty,” said the baker.
