Passage 4
(24-25学年高一下·四川省遂宁市船山区遂宁绿然学校·期中)
Do you remember the name of your kindergarten (幼儿园) teacher? I do. Her name was Mrs White. And I remember I thought she must be a sister of Snow White, because she had the same bright blue eyes, short dark hair and fair skin 1 Snow White.
I don’t remember much about what I 2 in her class. My mother once told me that I used to 3 a lot. I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it. There were so many 4 , but no red corrections (改正), and always a star. Sometimes even a “Good” would make my heart full of 5 . One day, my mother went to 6 Mrs White for one of the parent-teacher activities. Then she asked Mrs White 7 she never corrected my mistakes in the right spellings of words or pointed out grammatical mistakes.
“The children just 8 to get excited about using words and making sentences. I don’t want my students to lose 9 because of red ink (墨水). Spelling and 10 can wait, but the wonder of words won’t...” Mrs White said.
I can remember the time of learning in kindergarten was so happy for me. As I grow up, I 11 wonder many things and love my life. I look back now and think Mrs White must be such a(n) 12 teacher that uses as less red pen as possible.
I used to misspell (拼错) “beautiful” a lot, and could never remember that the “e” goes before the “a”. It made my teacher in the high school 13 . She asked me to use “pretty” instead when I was writing. I didn’t listen to her. In my eyes, “pretty” is 14 to spell, but it doesn’t hold as much as we mean sometimes.
Thanks to Mrs White, I have never 15 writing what I mean even if I couldn’t quite spell it out. Because life isn’t “pretty”, it’s “beautiful”.

Passage 1

Every year I’d read over 2,000 college applications from students all over the world. It is quite 1 to choose whom to admit. 2 , in the chaos of SAT scores and recommendations, one 3 is always irresistible in a candidate: kindness.
The most surprising 4 of kindness I’ve ever 5 came from a student who had excellent scores and a supportive recommendation from his college counselor (顾问). Even with these qualifications, he might not have 6 . But one letter of recommendation caught my eye. It was from a school security 7 . Letters of recommendation are typically written by people like former presidents, celebrities, and Olympic athletes.
The security guard wrote that he supported this student’s admission because of his 8 . This young man was the only person in the school who knew the names of every member of the guard staff. He turned off lights in empty rooms, consistently 9 the hallway monitor each morning and tidied up the classroom after his peers left school 10 nobody was watching. This student, the security guard wrote, had a(n) 11 respect for every person at the school, regardless of position, popularity or power.
It gave us a 12 onto a student’s life in the moments when nothing “counted”. That student was admitted by unanimous (一致的) vote of the admissions committee.
Next year there might be a flood of security guard recommendations 13 this essay. But if it means students will start paying as much 14 to the people who clean their classrooms as they do to their principals and teachers, I’m happy to help start that 15 .

No one is born a winner. People make themselves into winners by their own 1 .

It was a tradition for the school’s old team to play against the 3 team at the end of spring practice. The old team had no coach, and they didn’t even practice to 4 the game. Being the coach of the new team, I was excited because I knew we were going to win, but to my disappointment we were defeated. I couldn’t 5 I had got into such a situation. Thinking hard about it, I came to 6 that my team might not be the number one team in Georgia, but they were depending on me. I had to change my 7 about their ability and potential.
I started doing anything I could to help them build a little pride. Most important, I began to treat them like 8 . That summer, when the other teams enjoyed their vacations, we met every day and 9 passing and kicking the football.
Six months after suffering our 10 on the spring practice field, we won our first game and our second, and continued to improve. Finally, we faced the number one team in the state. I felt that it would be a 11 for us even if we lost the game. But that wasn’t what happened. My boys beat the best team in Georgia, giving me one of the greatest 12 of my life!
From the experience I learned a lot about how the attitude of the leader can 13 the members of a team. Instead of seeing my boys as losers, I pushed and 14 them. I helped them to see themselves 15 , and they built themselves into winners.
