Jamie Whitmore, 43, isn't used to slowing down. The professional athlete who became a gold medalist of Olympics for the disabled has never met a challenge she couldn't overcome, whether it was a mountain bike race or cancer.
One morning in 2007, Whitmore found her leg muscles were tight when trying for a jog. Thinking she'd pushed herself too hard in the last race, she ignored the pain. Later at a sports camp in Arizona, she realized something was wrong. “Once I got on my bike I was so painful that it was hard to pick my legs up. I flew back home to go to a hospital.” What doctors found shocked them all:Whitmore had a soft tissue tumor (肿瘤) that started in the bone, and the tumor was wrapped around her nerve of waist, touching several vital organs.
After the surgery, Whitmore had to learn to walk again with the help of a physical doctor. She also started radiation treatment, but four months later, doctors had worse news:A scan had shown the cancer was back.“This time it was more aggressive. Doctors took the rest of my nerve in the waist, and removed some cancer from my tail bone.” Whitmore developed sepsis (败血症) from the surgery and endured a twomonth recovery.“My scans were coming back clear of cancer, but now I had all of these other complications(并发症).”
Today,Whitmore is a mother and cancerfree. She has won a gold medal in the Paralympics, and has set two world records.Whitmore has some advice for others_with_limitations:“Never let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do. You have to find out yourself. Some doctors told me I would never ride anything more than a stationary bike. And yet I rode my mountain bike 104 miles climbing from 9,000 feet to 14,000 feet. You just can't give up.”
24.What's Whitmore's first reaction to her leg pain?( )
A.She was very scared.
B.She thought nothing of it.
C.She related it to cancer.
D.She thought of muscle tumor.
25.What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 3?( )
A.What Whitmore has suffered.

C.What Whitmore planned to perform.
D.How Whitmore thought of the treatment.
26.Who does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 refer to?( )
A.People living with cancers.
B.Students short of virtues.
C.Students without good luck.
D.People living with disabilities.
27.Which one of the following best describes Whitmore?( )
A.Humorous and unhealthy.
B.Outgoing and honest.
C.Strongminded and optimistic.
D.Determined and naughty.

Whale sharks, the world's largest fish, spend much of their time swimming slowly, swallowing large quantities of tiny creatures. But the animals have more complex hunting habits than previously thought.
New observations in Western Australia's Ningaloo Reef show these animals can hunt together with other predators(食肉动物) including tuna, other sharks, and even seabirds. In a recent video filmed by photographer Tom Cannon, at least three whale sharks were seen feeding on a ball of baitfish(钓饵鱼), a behavior rarely caught on camera.
“I've watched the video hundreds of times, and it still blows my mind,” says Emily Lester, a postdoctoral fellow at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Baitfish balls draw in predators of all shapes, and in the Ningaloo video the whale sharks were seen attacking at speed through the center of the bait ball, as well as positioning themselves beneath it. Both of these skills require more effort than swimming slowly along, mouth wide open.
“By themselves, whale sharks will certainly do the work, but they're slow,” says Simon Pierce, who has been conducting research on whale sharks for over 15 years. “But when other predators are there attacking the baitfish, forcing them into a ball, the largest mouth gets the most fish.”
Having a big shark get the largest part of your meal seems like a major disadvantage, but there could be some benefit to the seabirds and other fish as well.“I wonder if this is a twoway interaction,” Leaster says.“After the whale sharks charge through the bait ball, can those other predators capitalize on the separated fish?”
“This is only one interaction, and we got very lucky to video it,” Lester says.“But I'm hoping that we get even luckier in the future.” Ningaloo's rich ecosystem together with the countless ocean lovers who document it, puts that goal within reach.
28.What have the new observations found about whale sharks?( )
A.They team up with other feeders to hunt.
B.They swim more quickly than thought.
C.They usually prefer tiny creatures to large ones.
D.They depend mainly on one kind of fish for food.
29.What does Simon Pierce say about whale sharks?( )
A.They are uninterested in baitfish balls.
B.They swim slowly along to feed on baitfish.
C.They are unable to hunt baitfish on their own.
D.They need other predators' help to get the most baitfish.
30.What can we learn about other predators from the text?( )
A.They could be eaten by sharks.
B.They couldn't get enough food.
C.They could benefit from the shark's hunting.
D.They are more skillful in attacking the baitfish.
31.How does Lester sound when talking about future research?( )
A.Worried. B.Hopeful.
C.Skeptical. D.Formal.
D
When given the choice, about 85% of people say they would not want to know about some negative events far in the future. Yet recently millions of people around the globe have downloaded FaceApp, which allows users to see how they might age in real life.
Many people had fun with it, joking that they love the FaceApp old age filter. Beneath the humor is a serious subject:How do we learn to relate to our future selves? It's important that we try to do it because it could help strengthen the longterm decisions that we make. However, we often fail to make sacrifices for the grayer versions of ourselves.
More than half of the respondents in a recent survey of 2,800 Americans said they rarely or never thought about what their lives might be like 30 years from now. This isn't surprising, since most of us are firmly rooted in the present and thinking about the distant future can seem like a distant priority (优先事项).My ongoing research might also offer an explanation:We tend to think about our future selves as if they are the persons different from who we are today. In an effort to narrow these empathy(共鸣) gaps, my workmates and I have tried to present people's future selves in the same way as others have tried to promote charity. Given that a photograph of one hungry child can spark emotional reactions, and cause viewers to donate, we have presented participants with vivid images of their distant selves.
That seems helpful. In a recently completed project in Mexico, we found that exposure to future images led more people to contribute to their pensions. Despite this research, I'm skeptical about the fact that the app users will suddenly increase their pension contributions. The silly app isn't paired with an immediate opportunity to change.
The lesson from FaceApp shouldn't be that we need to marry hitech visuals with savings for retirement. The lesson, then, takes the form of a question:What more can be done to urge us to think about who we will become one day?
32.What can we learn about FaceApp?( )
A.It provides future images.
B.It is the most downloaded app.
C.It helps people make decisions.
D.It makes people age in real life.
33.Why do most respondents rarely think of their future lives?( )
A.They have known their future lives from FaceApp.
B.They fail to make sacrifices for their future.
C.They attach greater importance to the present.
D.They consider future selves to be the same as today's.
34.What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 4 refer to?( )
A.Completing a project in Mexico.
B.Offering aging images of participants.
C.Raising contributions among viewers.
D.Giving a photograph of a hungry child.
35.What's the author's attitude to FaceApp?( )
A.Positive. B.Doubtful.
C.Ambiguous. D.Unfavorable.

Hollywood was still in its early stage, but its studios soon made fortunes producing wartime movies. The war itself provided material for countless movies in the 1920s and 1930s, including Wings, the winner of the first Academy Awards.
Plastic Surgery
39(____). British army surgeon Harold Gillies and his colleagues performed more than 11,000 operations, mostly on soldiers suffering from facial wounds from gunshots.40(____).
There were other innovations made during World War Ⅰ,such as wristwatches, modern passports, zippers, drones, etc.

The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 am. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

The film can only be seen at a new cinema inside the Science Museum. It's showing this Sunday with performances every hour from midday onwards, with the last showing at 5 o'clock, two hours before the museum closes.
So why not take the whole family to the museum this Sunday? There are lots to do. Children will want to head straight down to the basement where the computers are kept. I promise you they'll come away with all sorts of exciting pictures they've created. Moving to the first floor, a working steam engine and a lifesized model of a spaceship are among the favourite exhibits.
Entrance to the museum is free on Sundays, but it would normally cost $3.25 to go and see the film. To get your free tickets, you should email this program by midday on Friday. We've only got a limited number of tickets, so the earlier you email us, the more likely you are to get one.
So go ahead with the writing after this song.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed! They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

Seeing their disappointed faces, he told them to clean up the kitchen while he helped them make breakfast for Mother. The twins cheered up and did as told. Within an hour, the kitchen was cleaned, and Father made some egg sandwiches and cooked some porridge. Then he sneaked back to bed. The twins prepared the breakfast tray, adding a card they had made.
The_twins_carried_the_breakfast_upstairs_and_woke_their_mother_up. They yelled “Happy Mother's Day, darling Mummy!” Mother hugged the twins. Her eyes widened at the sight of the breakfast. She shook Father who was pretending to snore. He pretended to be astonished when he saw the breakfast. Mother bit into a sandwich and said it was the best she had ever tasted. Jeff immediately wanted to have a bite. Jenna caught her father's eye and they were secretly delighted.
