Dear Amy,
I’m writing to tell you about my growing pains and gains. As a Grade Eight student, I have many worries, but I also get a lot from solving them. My biggest pain is the pressure from exams. I often worry that I can’t get good grades and let my parents down. On Saturday morning, I got up at 8:00 a.m. After breakfast, I studied for two hours. It was really tiring, and I felt upset.
In the afternoon, I went to the park with my best friend, Lily. I told her about my worry. She listened to me and encouraged me to face it bravely. She said growing pains are normal and they can help us make progress. On Sunday morning, I talked to my mom about my pressure. She told me that the process of trying is more important than the result. With their help, I learned to adjust myself. I felt relaxed and confident again—that’s my biggest gain. In the evening, I read a book about teenagers’ growing stories and then went to bed at 9:30 p.m.
I think growing pains are not terrible. They make me stronger and more confident. Every pain brings a valuable gain. What about your growing pains and gains? Please write to me and tell me.
Yours,
Linda

When I was a teenager, I did a six-week summer learning camp at a college. It helped kids get a taste of what college was like. We had classes in the morning and the evenings were filled with fun activities. We did have a break in the afternoons. One afternoon, my friend Claude and I found an old basketball. We went to an outdoor basketball court for a game of one-on-one.
At that time, Claude was taller than me. He was also better at basketball. Gradually, I fell behind. I made up my mind and drove hard to the basket, but missed it! The ball bounced off the rim (篮筐边缘). Just as I jumped up to catch it, I saw an elbow above my face. When Claude caught the ball, his elbow hit my eye hard. I saw stars everywhere. The pain was terrible. Claude kept saying “sorry” over and over. I laughed through the pain.
I spent the next few days walking around with a black eye, but it was worth it. For years, afterward, I got a laugh whenever I told the story and joked about Claude’s elbow of death. We all get an elbow to the eye sometimes. Our plans fail. Things work against us. Our ups become downs. When this happens, it’s best to face it with laughter and forgiveness (原谅). Last summer, my son, Eric, left for university in another country. Our once lively house became quiet and lonely. I missed and worried about him so much that I started sending him messages on the phone, mainly to say hello or to give him a word of warning.
One of my messages said, “So you told me you lost your wallet. If you are always careless, one day you’ll wake up and find yourself lost.”
I did get Eric’s messages, but most of them were about money. I was a bit angry. They were not different from the notes he used to leave on the whiteboard when he was at home.
“I bought a new pair of shoes. They cost me $90. Please help!”
“Money is running short because I’ve bought some books for my research paper. Help me, please!”
Recently, however, Eric begins to send me all kinds of articles. Some are funny, some are touching and some make me think. He knows I haven’t got many things to do in my free time. He says they will help me understand young men better and keep up with the times. I read the articles slowly, like a careful student, with mixed feelings as well—my kid, who followed me around not long ago, has now become my teacher!
So I write back, “I’ve read all those articles. I’ll take them as a loving son’s hopes towards his mother. He must be thinking that his mother is still young enough to accept new things. That makes me feel proud. We parents can’t learn quickly and change in both body and mind. Thank you, my son.”
In this way we share ideas, with a gentle and beautiful language we seldom use. Every time I read those messages, I feel warm.
36.Why did the writer keep sending messages to Eric?
A.To ask Eric to return home soon.
B.Because Eric needed her advice every day.
C.Because she felt lonely and worried about him.

② To give his mother some things to do.
③ To help his mother keep up with the times.
④ To help his mother understand the young better.
A.①②③ B.②③④
C.①②④ D.①③④
39.How does the writer’s feeling change?
A.Proud → angry → worried.
B.Proud → worried → angry.
C.Angry → worried → proud.
D.Worried → angry → proud.
40.Which part of a magazine may the article come from?

Dear Amy,
I’m writing to tell you about my growing pains and gains.

B.Because Eric needed her advice every day.

④ To help his mother understand the young better.
A.①②③ B.②③④
C.①②④ D.①③④
