The Beijing Central Axis is about 7.8 km long from north to south through the city’s centre. It runs from the Bell and Drum Towers (钟鼓楼) in the north to Yongdingmen Gate in the south. In 2024, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. To celebrate, on a beautiful day, I stepped out of the subway station and began my trip along the Axis from the south. My walk from Yongdingmen Gate to Zhengyangmen Gate was easy. I spent some time exploring Qianmen Street. I found many famous names there, including the Lao She Teahouse.
Keeping walking north, I passed through Tian’anmen Square and the Forbidden City before stopping for a quick lunch. Then I arrived at Jingshan Park. Climbing to the top, I took a bird’s-eye view (鸟瞰) of the city. How fantastic!
Next, I rode a bike along Di’anmen Street to the Drum Tower and the Bell Tower. In ancient times, the deep sounds of bells and drums told the time.

My family had a wonderful holiday in China a few years ago. We visited several cities in eleven days.
Our first stop was Beijing, and Nancy was our guide. She led us to all the important places, such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the hutongs. Her English was perfect, and she could explain ( 解释 ) their history and culture well. We were really thankful for her work as it added value to our trip.

That scenery inspired the mountains in the film Avatar (《阿凡达》), and we were looking forward to seeing it with our own eyes. It was such a pity.

Antarctica(南极洲) is now a popular travel spot. A famous travel writer, Pico Iyer, recently wrote of his experience in Antarctica. “The visit gives me wonderful memories and also makes me worry about Earth’s environmental problems.” Iyer isn’t alone. Many tourists have this feeling that is called “Antarctic ambassadorship”.
About 100,000 tourists visit Antarctica each year. Though this number is tiny compared to tourism standards, their visits can still harm the environment. Most visitors go to the areas where penguins, seals, and birds live for only a few months per year. There’s no host community to protest (抗议) if visitor numbers get too high.
Even so, strong protections are in place. There are some strict rules in “Antarctic Treaty System” —the set of international agreements which were signed by over 50 countries. Tour companies have to follow strict environmental rules. For example, to avoid bringing dirt, seeds, or insects to Antarctica, tourists must clean their shoes and vacuum their pockets before setting foot on the ice. They must also stay 5 meters away from wildlife so that animals don’t feel scared.
Almost all Antarctic ship owners belong to IAATO (International Association of Antarctic a Tour Operators), the group that manages Antarctic tourism. Recently, IAATO has to report how much fuel they use as part of IAATO’s efforts to make the industry more environment-friendly. Some companies now use special “hybrid ships”. These ships run on both fuel and electricity, which helps lower pollution. For short trips near the coast, the ships can use electric power, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and making them quieter and cleaner.
If you’re one of the tourists going to Antarctica this summer, enjoy the experience—but go with care. Be aware that no trip south comes without environmental cost and use this knowledge to make clear-eyed decisions about your activities both in Antarctica and once you’re safely back home.

Next, we went to Chengdu and enjoyed everything there. Like everybody else, we fell in love with the cute pandas.
But the days in Zhangjiajie turned out to be our favourite part of the trip. We headed straight to Tianmen Mountain on Day One. With its glass-bottomed bridges and cliff paths, this place is not for weak hearts. But the picturesque (优美的) views took my breath away. I couldn’t help taking pictures. By the end of that day, I had several hundred more pictures on my phone. We were not so lucky the next day as the weather turned bad. It was harder for us to see the scenery clearly. That scenery inspired the mountains in the film Avatar (《阿凡达》), and we were looking forward to seeing it with our own eyes. It was such a pity.
After saying goodbye to China’s first national forest park, we headed to Shanghai for the last leg of our trip. We had a great time, and the journey still feels like it happened yesterday.

D.the number of visitors to Antarctica is beyond standards
