There was a woman who worked as a maid during the day and came home at night to live alone with her four-year-old son. When the master learned of the maid’s condition, he made a room for her and the child, and said, “Bring your child to my house. You both eat and sleep for free.” But the maid refused the offer.
One day, the master wanted to treat the house. The master asked the maid, “Could you come home late today, I’m short of hands here.”
The maid replied, “Okay, it’s just that my son won’t see me at night and he’ll be scared.”
“That’s easy,” said the master. “You fetch him now, and have dinner with my guests.”
The maid picked him up and hid him in a washroom. She took a plate and took out from her pocket the sausage and bread she’ d bought on the way home. Then the maid told the son, “This is a private room specially prepared for you by the host of the party.”
The child was so short that he had to put the dish on the toilet lid(马桶盖). He sat on the beautiful tile floor, singing and eating the delicious food that was usually difficult to eat. Soon, the master found no sign of the child and went to ask the maid. The maid mumbled and said, “I’ve been too busy to look after him. Maybe, he’s out on the lawn playing by himself.”
The master seemed to understand something. He searched all the rooms of the house, and finally found the child. The master asked, “How can you eat here? Do you know where this is?”
The boy told the master what his mother had said to him, and asked him if he would like to eat the delicious food here with him. The master nodded, choking back tears, and faced the child with his brightest smile. Now he remembered the experience of coming to New York with his parents. They were also very poor at that time, and they went through very hard times. Then he went back to the hall to bring the child his favorite dish.

My two older sisters love amusement parks. They are thrill-seekers and go on the scariest rides. Every year, my father and I had the job of waiting on the line for them for their next ride. But on this day, my older sister, Christina encouraged me to ride the roller coaster with them.
“You should try it you know. I think you’re tall enough now.”
“I don’t want to go,” I said shaking my head.
“Come on I promise you it’s really fun. You’re going to regret it if you don’t go because this is our last ride of the day.”
I had to admit she could be convincing. After thinking for a while, I slowly took my sister’s hand. She smiled and dragged me towards the huge line for the roller coaster. My hands were shaking. My sister assured me again that it was going to be OK. Even my father encouraged me to go on with them.
Seeing the majestic heights of the roller coaster and other rides gave me goose bumps. I started to freak out and become pessimistic about the situation. “What if those buckles unlock and I shoot out?” I thought to myself. I shook for 30 minutes as the line got shorter. As I got closer, I could see the tremendous speed and height of the roller coaster. “Why did I say yes?” I freaked out even harder.
I turned around to look for my dad, so I could back out. But he was already out of sight. So I clung to my sister and took a deep breath. When our turn came and a guy in a red polo shirt measured my height to see if I was tall enough, I knelt down slightly.
“Alright buddy you’re good,” he announced.
“I think the front seat will be the best so we can see everything,” my oldest sister suggested.
“Hey, don’t you think the front will be the scariest with all those hard turns?” I said.
They didn’t listen to me; the three of us piled into the front. The guys in red polo shirts locked us in with seatbelts that had yellow buckles. I double-checked to make sure they were locked.
“Hey, it’s going to be fine, trust me,” one sister said.

Mr Lim had been in a bad mood ever since he lost his job three months ago. His efforts to find another job had been fruitless as well. To make ends meet, his wife, Mrs Lim, had to take on an overseas job offer. This meant that Mr Lim was left to tend to his two children, Luke and Lisa, all by himself. Seeing their father being so unhappy every day, Luke and Lisa wanted badly to cheer him up. On the day of Mr. Lim’s birthday, the children decided to turn their intention into action.
“Hurry, Luke! Dad will be home anytime now! Let’s hide to surprise him!” Lisa said. After placing the birthday cake they had bought on the table, something that Luke and Lisa were sure Mr Lim would not have expected, they hid under it. It had taken the children many weeks to save enough money to buy their father’s favourite cake.
They smiled at each other when the smell of fresh paint reached their nose. Luke and Lisa had painted on their dining area’s wall, intending that to be decoration for Mr Lim’s surprise birthday party. Moments later, the main door creaked (嘎吱作响) open. Suddenly, a loud shout filled the air!
“Who messed up the wall on purpose?” Mr Lim shouted angrily. On hearing those words, Luke and Lisa stared at each other in shock. As the elder brother, Luke knew he had to protect Lisa. Taking a deep breath, Luke slowly moved out from under the table. Before he could say a word, Mr Lim gave him an earful (长时间的斥责). Hoping to clear up the misunderstanding, Luke said, “Dad, you’re wrong. We just wanted to...”
“Don’t you dare give me excuses!” Mr Lim raised his voice. Then, with great force, he threw the newspaper he had been holding at the dining table. It hit the birthday cake, ruining it! Seeing that, Luke’s heart broke. He cried.
“Dad ... we ... we’re sorry! We wanted to give ... give you a birthday sur ... surprise,” Lisa explained in between cries, after moving out from her hiding spot.

4.(24-25高二下·浙江台州·期中)Every October, my neighborhood has a Halloween costume contest with a different theme. And every October, my neighbor Ollie and I race to the announcement board in the park to find it out. But this year, the theme was kind of, well, theme-less.
“‘Be creative’?” I said, reading the announcement board. “That’s not really a theme, is it?”
Ollie hopped off (跳下) his skateboard to get a closer look. “You’re right,” he agreed.
“Now that’s the creative spirit we need for this challenge!” I proposed that we should start by choosing some cool costume - making materials.
Just at that time, Ollie scooped up (捧起) a bunch of fallen leaves and exclaimed he had got a brilliant idea.
Seized by confusion, I asked, “You’re going to make an entire costume out of leaves?”
Seemed to be amused by my look, he grinned and scooped up some more. “Why not?” he said, “They’ re totally free, and I can guarantee, no one will be a tree as great as me.”
Upon hearing that, I added that now that was the creative spirit We need for this challenge! “Aw, come on,” I said. “You should be flattered that I like your idea so much. Plus, I just thought of the perfect way to make branches.”
Luckily, Ollie said OK. We ended up filling two jumbo bags with different kinds of leaves. Ollie’s grandma helped get us set up with tons of excellent costume-making supplies, and we worked forever! At last, when we were finally in the homestretch, I complained. “I’m so tired of gluing leaves.”
When we were done, we tried on part of our costumes, and we could tell they really would be fantastic. It took us hours to get ready the next morning, and we probably lost half our leaves shuffling over to the park. Still, when it was time for contestants to line up in the judging area, I felt pretty proud.
However, after a few minutes, I started having another feeling. As I was standing there in the costume, the feeling got worse, and worse, and worse until I was so itchy (痒), I just had to scratch (挠). I started wiggling (摇动;扭动) around uncomfortably.

The recycling bin incident had been simmering (酝酿) for weeks. Every Tuesday morning, my neighbor Ms. Garcia would throw glass bottles into her bin with a loud crash, startling me awake at 6:30 a.m. The sound pierced the peaceful silence of the early morning, ruining what could have been a restful start to the day. I’d lie in bed, fists clenched, counting the clangs (哐哐声) as it echoed through the quiet neighborhood.
I decided I couldn’t stay silent any longer. When Ms. Garcia repeated her noisy routine last week, my anger exploded. I stormed over. She was fishing soda cans from her faded blue bin, sorting through those bottles which would be later sold to the recycling plant for cash. “Do you have to be so careless?” I complained, my voice sharp with contained fury, expecting her to apologize. Instead, she met my rage with resistance. Her face hardening instantly, she shot back, “This is my routine. Mind your own business.” We parted in icy silence.
Returning home, I was consumed by anger and displeasure toward her. However, as the hours passed, that anger began to give way to a sense of guilt, leaving me unsettled. My grandmother’s words resounded: “Anger is a storm that drowns the truth.” Her wisdom made me reconsider the situation. Perhaps I didn’t fully understand Ms. Garcia’s circumstances.
Ms. Garcia lived alone, her husband’s photo still displayed in her window years after his passing. Had I just attacked a mourning widow (寡妇) over a few sleepless mornings? By afternoon, guilt kept chewing on me. I resolved to take action — I needed to fix this. I spent the evening crafting a wind chime (风铃) from sea glass, its gentle tones melodic compared to the jarring bottle crashes.

On my birthday last year, 6 October, my boyfriend and I split up, after almost a decade together. We were driving back from a holiday in Maine, a last chance to find a way to make it work.
We had a lovely time; it didn’t change anything. “We can’t…” “It’s not…” “We don’t…”. All around us the trees were on fire, their leaves gorgeous flaming colors. I looked over the hill in blank terror at the long way down. He would stay in the US, where he worked; I would go to live in the little house we had bought together on the north coast of Brittany. It seemed like the best place to sit out the pandemic, be quiet, lick my wounds, write a little if I could.
We retraced our journey from Maine to New York to Washington DC. I flew to London, took the Eurostar to Paris, the TGV to Morlaix; from Morlaix it was half an hour’s drive to the coast. The countryside opened up green and blue as I drove over the last rise and exhaled as I took in the wide view of the sea.
The weather was fresh, windy but sunny. Behind the port, there was our little house, shutters shuttered, summer roses blown; inside were his clothes and his books, photographs of a life shared, trinkets and souvenirs and memories. I unpacked, wept with the exhaustion of the journey and all the excoriations of failure and loss.
Put on my bathing suit. I never in a million years thought I would be a person who would enjoy swimming in cold water. I swam when the weather was hot, or did laps in indoor swimming pools; I spent a lot of time in the bath. I loved the water, but I was like a cat, I liked being warm more.
It started the summer of 2017. My father had just died. We were living in Paris and good and kind friends lent me their house in Locquirec in Brittany so that I could have some time to be alone, retreat and recover. On the first afternoon, I walked down the lane to the little beach in the port where sailboats were moored, toddlers smashed sandcastles and teenagers jumped into the sea from the harbour wall.

People will never know what difference a name can make! I’ve never read an official study on the matter, but I’ve noticed that in animal shelters, black cats are the most overlooked. Black seems to be the least preferred of cat colors, ranking below all combinations of white, orange, gray, spotted and striped. Black cats are still stereotyped (刻板印象) as Halloween cats, creatures of bad luck, more appropriate on a witch's broomstick than curled up on your pillow. To make matters worse, in cages, black cats become close to invisible, fading into the dark shadows in the back of a stainless-steel cage.
For eleven years, starting when I was ten years old, I volunteered at an urban animal shelter. It always struck me as particularly unfair that, time after time, I’d get to know affectionate, adorable black cats, only to watch them be passed over by adopters merely because of their color. I assumed there was nothing that could be done.
One day, I spent a few minutes petting a sweet, black half-grown kitten, who had been found as a stray and brought to the shelter. The slender thing purred warmly at my attention, gently playful as she patted my hand with one paw. I noticed there was no name written on the informational card on her cage.
Since volunteers were welcome to name the strays that came to the shelter, I thought for a moment about what I could name this black kitten. I wanted to think of a name that could give the kitten the kind of appealing “color” that might encourage an adopter to take a second look. The name “Jellybean”(彩色糖豆) popped into my head, and I wrote it on the card, just as I’d named thousands of cats in the past.

The camp’s diving board (跳水板) loomed over Ethan, making his stomach churn (搅动). His palms were sweaty as he shuffled forward in the line of campers. The instructor’s voice boomed, “Everyone jumps today, or no certificate (证书)!” Ethan’s throat tightened. Seven years ago, a near-drowning in a lake had filled his mind with fear — dark water swallowing his screams, lungs burning for air. Now, at fourteen, he was trapped again.
The boy ahead of him, Jake, leapt off the board with a whoop, slicing into the water like a knife. The crowd cheered, but Ethan barely heard them. His legs turned to lead. What if I froze? What if they laughed? Last week, his little sister looked up at him with wide eyes and said, “You’re my hero, Ethan.” But he was not a hero. He gripped the railing (栏杆), staring at the lake’s surface — it mirrored dark clouds, turning like a storm in the sky today.
A hand clapped his shoulder. “Your turn, Ethan,” Coach Miller said gently. The man’s eyes held no judgment, only quiet encouragement. Ethan forced one foot onto the board. It creaked, swaying under his weight. Below, the water seemed to yawn wider, hungry. His childhood nightmare flashed: arms and legs struggling, bubbles rising as he sank…
“Breathe, kid,” Coach murmured. “Fear’s just a bully. Face it, and it backs down.” Ethan’s fingers trembled, but he took another step. The board dipped. Maybe I can…

The first snowflakes of December floated down, painting the world outside Sarah’s window white. Inside, the cozy living room smelled of pine needles and cinnamon (肉桂皮). Twelve-year-old Sarah stood on a chair, carefully hanging handmade paper stars above the fireplace — a Christmas tradition her mother had started years ago. “Each star holds a wish, Mom used to say, her eyes twinkling as she lifted Sarah to place the highest one.”
This year, Sarah’s wish was simple: Bake gingerbread cookies with Dad, just like before. Her father, a truck driver often away for days, had promised. No work on Christmas Eve! We’ll make a mess in the kitchen, just you and me, he’d declared two days ago, kissing her forehead before heading out.
But now, heavy snow blurred the streetlights, and the clock ticked past 7 PM. Sarah’s phone buzzed—a text from Dad: “Traffic jam near Pineville. Home by 8! Don’t eat all the sprinkles (糖粉)!” She smiled, arranging cookie cutters in the shape of stars, trees, and reindeer. The recipe book, stained with chocolate from happier times, lay open on the table.
By 8:30 PM, the storm roared louder. News reports warned of closed roads and accidents. Sarah called Dad repeatedly, but his phone rang unanswered. She hugged her knees by the fireplace, staring at the photo on the mantel (壁炉台): Mom laughing and flour dusting her nose as Dad pretended to bite a half-baked cookie. After Mom’s passing away last year, Christmas had felt hollow. “This year has to be different,” Sarah thought.
Suddenly, a loud knock startled her. Through the frosted window, red and blue lights flashed—a police car! Sarah’s hands turned icy. “Was there an accident?” She stumbled to the door, her socks slipping on the wooden floor.

All the runners adjusted their positions on the starting blocks, waiting for the gun to fire. September sun warmed my back as I crouched (蹲) in Lane 3. Fresh chalk lines mixed with the smell of nervous sweat in the air. In the stands, Dad was probably checking his watch again.
“Runners set!” My heartbeat drowned out the starter gun’s bang. Three steps in, I knew something was wrong. My left shoelace came loose. By the final turn, red ponytail girl from Lane 5 had become a shrinking dot. When I crossed the finish line, even the electronic board blinked in pity — 4th place. Again.
Coach Walsh walked over. “You have talent,” she said, tapping her clipboard (写字夹板), “but you keep watching others instead of focusing on yourself.” Behind her, members of school team laughed while packing bags, car doors slamming like drumbeats.
That evening, I studied the race video on my laptop. The red-haired girl — Katherine Miller — moved like a dancer. Her social media showed ballet training since age 12. Mine? Hospital visits for asthma (哮喘). At 9:00 PM, I put on running shoes. The streets were quiet under yellow streetlights as my feet pounded the ground. Each breath tasted of October chill and an awful smell from the late bus. At the convenience store, Mr. Chen looked up from his crossword when I bought a blue sports drink. “Girls need sleep,” he said, scanning my drink. “Training,” I answered, the word tasting sweet as the drink.
The training became a routine in the following weeks. Night after night, I hit the streets, pushing myself to the limit despite the cold and the awful smell. The once-challenging distance became easier to cover, and my pace quickened.
The state final kicked off on a morning, dark clouds hanging low. As we did warming- up, raindrops hit the track. Two lanes over, Katherine’s red ponytail bounced as she stretched. “Remember your rhythm,” Coach Walsh called over the fence.

In an art class my friend Mareya and I took, we had to look at art made by lots of different artists and then try creating our own. We made clay pots, shoebox collages (拼贴画), pencil drawings, and paintings using only small dots of paint. We even made paint-splatters (洒,溅) art.
For our very last assignment, our teacher asked us to paint a portrait of a friend or family member. Mareya and I looked at each other and nodded. We both had the same idea. “You’ll each get one of these art kits,” said Ms. Williams. “Every kit contains a small canvas (油画布), a set of paints, and two foam (泡沫) brushes. You can paint in any style you choose.”
Mareya and I put our kits into our art bags. Then we headed over to her house, as we always did after art class. “I think I’ll paint you in Leonardo da Vinci’s style,” I said while we walked. “Are you ready to pose like the Mona Lisa?” “Don’t you mean the Mareya Lisa?” Mareya said, crossing her arms and doing the funniest impression of the woman in that famous old painting.
“Wow!” I giggled, “Your smile looks exactly like hers!” We were laughing so hard that we didn’t even notice our friend Jasmine zipping upon her bike. “Whoa! What’s the rush?” I said. “I was so excited to tell you my amazing news that I forgot how fast I was going.” said Jasmine.
“Ooh!” said Mareya. “What’s your news?” “Well...” Jasmine smiled. “My family just got the cutest puppy named Ginger, and if you want to come over, you can meet her!”
Jasmine’s house is only a couple of blocks from Mareya’s, so after checking in with Mareya’s mom, of course we had to go.
Ginger was the most adorable puppy imaginable. We threw her a toy and got her to run in circles until she was so tired out that she collapsed into a sleepy ball of fluff (蓬松毛团). “Whenever she’s not running around or chewing whatever she can get her paws on, she’s sound asleep in dreamland,” said Jasmine. She led the way to the kitchen. “Do you have time for a snack?” “Sure!” we said. After we had some yummy snacks at the kitchen table, Mareya and I stood up to leave.

“Who wants to show us their special project first?” Mrs. Williams asked my fourth-grade class. She always gave us chances to earn extra points. For this project, we were allowed to do anything, as long as we did it ourselves.
I burrowed my head in my sweater, just like my turtle. Don’t call on me. Don’t call on me.
“Ava, you look ready. Come on up,” Mrs. Williams said. Ava skipped! Unlike me, she just loved talking in front of people. She showed us how to wire potatoes so they produced electricity. Potatoes! Her dad was an engineer, and I wondered how much of the project he had helped her with. But it was cool, and I told her so when she passed my desk.
My buddy Jayce got called on next. He was so nervous that the skin on his neck was raspberry red. He demonstrated the Unpoppable Bubble. The class got to bat the bubble around and it didn’t pop. “You’ve got this,” I gave him a thumbs-up.
“Michael, your project, please.”
Michael. That was me! I hadn’t even raised my hand. I guess I forgot to keep my head buried. I walked to the front of the class on wobbly legs and set my birdhouse on the table. “This is how to build a birdhouse,” I began.
“Look at your audience, Michael,” Mrs. Williams called from the back of the room. She had reminded everyone who had come up so far. I swallowed the baseball-size lump in my throat and started again.
“I looked online for plans to build a birdhouse. Then I went to the lumberyard (木厂) with my dad, since I’m not old enough to drive.” (The class laughed at that.)“Someone there cut four pieces using the measurements I gave them for the walls, then they used a jigsaw (锯) for the hole.”
Luka’s hand shot up. We were supposed to take questions if anyone had them. Luka was my friend, but he always asked a billion questions. “So if someone at the lumberyard cut the wood and made the hole, and your dad drove you there, what did you do?” He asked.

In a small coastal town, 16-year-old Mia lived with her grandmother, a woman known for her legendary apple pie. Every Sunday, they would bake together, filling the house with the warm scent of cinnamon and sugar. Mia loved those moments — the way her grandmother’s hands moved with practiced ease, the stories she told about her own childhood, and the laughter they shared as flour dusted the kitchen counters.
But as Mia grew older, her priorities shifted. High school brought new friends, weekend plans, and a growing desire to fit in. Slowly, the Sunday baking tradition faded. Her grandmother never complained, but Mia could see the sadness in her eyes each time she made excuses to skip their time together.
One day, her grandmother fell ill and was rushed to the hospital. The house felt emptier than ever. and Mia’s guilt weighed heavily on her. While cleaning the kitchen, she found a worn recipe book tucked away in a drawer. Inside was her grandmother’s famous apple pie recipe, written in her familiar handwriting. Beneath the recipe was a note: “For Mia, my little helper. May this recipe remind you of the love we share.” Tears filled Mia’s eyes as she realized how much she had taken their time together for granted.
Determined to make a change, Mia decided to bake the pie herself and bring it to the hospital. She gathered the ingredients — apples from the backyard tree, cinnamon from the spice rack, and flour from the pantry. But as she laid everything out on the counter, she realized she had no idea how to make the crust — the one part her grandmother always handled.
Panic set in as she stared at the recipe. The instructions were vague (模糊的): “Mix butter and flour until it feels right.” What did that even mean? She tried to recall her grandmother’s movements — the way she kneaded the dough (面团), the exact texture she aimed for — but it was all a blur. Just then, her phone buzzed. It was a text from her best friend, inviting her to a party that evening.

On a scorching summer afternoon, the Johnson family gathered at the old farmhouse for Grandma’s birthday celebration. Tommy and his younger sister Lily, played hide-and-seek and chased each other around an old oak tree in the front yard, its gnarled (多节的) roots creating perfect hiding spots while its massive branches providing shade in this hot weather. The yard smelled of fresh grass and the roses, carefully tended by Grandma, emitted a faint fragrance.
Near dusk, the sky, previously brilliant blue, began to darken ominously (不祥的). Inside, the whole family chatted happily over dinner while sharing Grandma Johnson’s delicious apple pies as well as her tales of resilience (恢复力) in the face of adversity (逆境), the air filled with laughter. But as the first rumbles of thunder echoed in the distance, a silence fell over the room.
Suddenly a deafening thunderclap shook the very foundations of the house. Soon rain began to pour down in torrents, as if the heavens themselves had opened up, and the power went out with a lightning, throwing the room into darkness. “This is no ordinary storm,” Grandpa muttered in a low and solemn(严肃的) tone, staring out of the window.
With the night approaching, the storm showed no mercy. The wind roared with such intensity that the family could feel the house shaking under the attack. Tommy’s younger sister, Lily, held on to her stuffed bunny to her chest, her eyes wide with fear as she buried her face in her mother’s shoulder. Her mother wrapped her arms around Lily, rocking her gently back and forth in an attempt to comfort her. The wind howling like a wounded beast outside, Grandma took Tommy’s trembling hand in hers, her voice steady and reassuring as she spoke. “Remember, dear, storms don’t last forever.” Her words became a lifeline for the frightened children.
Then, a thunderous crash echoed through the backyard. “The old oak tree!” Tommy gasped. Grandpa sprang to his feet, determined to assess the damage despite the raging weather. Grandma grabbed his arm, her grip firm.“Wait, let me come with you. We’ll face it together.”

Last year at Christmas time my wife, three boys, and I were in France, on our way from Paris to Nice. For five exhausting days everything had gone wrong. Our hotels were “tourist traps”; our rented car broke down; we were all restless in the crowded car. On Christmas Eve, when we checked into a dim hotel in Nice, there was no Christmas spirit in our hearts.
It was raining and cold when we went out to eat. We found a restaurant with little decoration for the holiday. Only three tables in the restaurant were occupied. A German family, a French couple, and an American sailor, alone. In the corner a piano player lazily played Christmas music.
Tired and miserable, I looked around and noticed that the other customers were eating in stony silence. The only person who seemed happy was the American sailor. While eating, he was writing a letter, and a half-smile lighted his face.
My wife ordered our meal in French. The waiter brought us the wrong thing. I scolded my wife for being stupid. Her eyes were filled with tears. The boys defended her, and I felt even worse. On the left, the German father slapped one of his children for some minor fault, and the boy began to cry. On our right, the French wife began complaining to her husband.
Just then, through the front door came an old French flower woman. She wore a dripping overcoat, and dragged her legs in on worn-out shoes. Carrying her basket of flowers, she went from one table to the other. “Flowers, monsieur? Only one franc.” No one bought any.
Exhausted, she sat down at a table. To the waiter she said, “A bowl of soup. I haven’t sold a flower all afternoon.” To the piano player she said, “Can you imagine, Joseph, soup on Christmas Eve?” Joseph pointed to his empty “tipping plate”.

The Popsicle Kids
A nearly empty box of Popsicles (棒冰) in the freezer, left from a grandchild’s visit, caught my attention. Initially, I wanted to throw it away, but my wife suggested we give the remaining Popsicles to the neighborhood children. Her suggestion changed our life and led us to a future full of “Popsicle Kids.” My wife and I, retired on Social Security, live in an apartment complex. After careers in sales and nursing, our daily concerns revolved around aches, pains, and dinner. We often wondered what good we were to the world.
That changed dramatically after we gave away the first Popsicle.
Minutes after watching a neighbor boy, a second grader, walk away with an icy treat, our doorbell rang. An adorable blond girl, about six, smiled sweetly, “Is it true you’re giving away Popsicles?”
With the box empty, we returned to our concerns.
Early the next morning, the doorbell rang repeatedly. Standing on our porch were the four children from the previous day. They vocalized their wants, chanting (有节奏地喊), “We want Popsicles! We want Popsicles!”
Looking into their eager young faces, I wondered, “What have I started?” Sensing a victory, they nodded eagerly when I explained the rules: ring the bell once, one Popsicle per day, and share something good about their day. But their thin shoulders bent downwards in disappointment when I mentioned they had to give something in return. I came to the rescue, suggesting they share something positive about their day, like what they learned at school or helping another student. Over time, new rules were added: “Ladies first,” “Don’t interrupt,” and “Properly get rid of the sticks.”
On holidays, they expressed their understanding of why the day was celebrated. Over the years, about fifty youngsters visited. Some became part of my life, like the four kids who joined me on the steps one spring to read “Where the Red Fern Grows.” We discussed catching crawfish, loving pets, and family relationships. This simple act of sharing Popsicles transformed our life, bringing joy and meaning to both the children and ourselves.

Sarah, a woman overwhelmed by life’s struggles, stumbled toward her tiny apartment. She kept shaking in the storm, tears mixing with cold rain running down her pale face. When lightning flashed, it lit up the painful cuts on her hands — wounds from broken glass when she fell earlier. As she tried to open the door, the old keys kept slipping from her freezing fingers. All she wanted was to fall into a deep sleep and forget everything.
Years earlier, her husband disappeared, leaving her to raise their daughter Lily alone. Then she lost her job at the factory. Soon after, doctors found Lily had a rare heart condition. But fate twisted the knife deeper: during a routine checkup, Sarah learned that she had lung cancer — a sickness probably passed down from her mother. Hiding her illness to protect Lily, she sold her belongings, skipped meals, and worked night shifts at a diner, trying to keep life as normal as possible for her daughter.
That rainy night, while delivering food on her old bike, Sarah suddenly couldn’t breathe. Gasping for air, she collapsed on a wet bridge, her head hitting the pavement. Blood mixed with rainwater as she faded in and out of awareness. After lying dazed for minutes, she staggered up, left her bike behind, and dragged herself home like a ghost. She fell onto her worn-out couch, her labored breaths echoing in the darkness.
Meanwhile, others were searching. Paramedic (急救人员) Laura had barely touched her cold sandwich when another call came in. “A woman had collapsed on the bridge. She looked dead,” a scared witness reported. Laura’s team, already exhausted from eighteen emergencies that day, raced through the rain. At the scene, they found only a bent bicycle and faint pink stains on the wet pavement. Checking nearby security cameras, they watched Sarah stagger away from the site. The trail led to an apartment building with broken hallway lights.

Theo stood at the microphone. Silence settled over the hall. “Your word is onomatopoeia,” said Mr. Ramirez, the announcer. I got this! Theo thought. Spelling was sort of his superpower. He wasn’t a math or science guy, but he had a gift for spelling.
Theo’s brain fast-forwarded to the spelling bees (拼写比赛) ahead: first the county championship, then the state championship, and finally the national spelling bee. “Your answer, please, Theo?” He glanced back at Alexa, another fourth-grader, sitting on the edge of her chair. She wanted another chance at winning. If he missed his word, she’d be back in the game. But that wasn’t going to happen. Theo got the right spelling.
Theo’s sister, Deandra, who had also competed but missed her word, applauded with the rest of the crowd. Mr. Ramirez presented the trophy (奖杯) to Theo. He lifted both arms into the air. “I’m the alpha-best.” Then he raced toward his sister. “Ha!” Theo said, making the trophy dance in front of Deandra’s nose.
She rolled her eyes. “You’re a terrible winner.”
“What’s wrong with celebrating my victory?”
Deandra crossed her arms and made a sour face. “You know, it wasn’t cool the way you ignored Alexa onstage. She tried to shake your hand.”
Theo shrugged. “I didn’t notice. Anyway, county bee, here I come!”
“You might want to crack open the dictionary before counties. In two weeks, you’ll be facing the best of the best.”
“And they’ll be up against me, the alpha-beast.”
Deandra shook her head. “Well, good luck. I think you’re going to need it.”
Two weeks passed in a blink. At the county bee, students from different schools gathered around onstage, some looking more worried than others. Finally, it was time for the contestants to take their seats.
After six rounds, the group of more than 100 students decreased to just seven. This was no regular spelling bee. Theo had barely made it through the last round with a lucky guess on conscience. And if he’d had to spell aerospace or conical, he’d be out already. His sister’s advice suddenly made sense.

专题09 读后续写
1.(24-25高二下·浙江杭州·期中)读后续写

【答案】Back in the bathroom, the master put the dish on the toilet lid. He also sat on the ground, and said to the child, “It’s a shame to enjoy such a nice single room and food alone. Let’s have dinner together.” The master and the child sang while eating and talked about many topics. He convinced the four-year-old that his mother was the hardest working and greatest mother in the world. Before parting the master added, “Not only should you be proud of her, but you should do something for her when you grow up.”
Many years later, the child grew up. Not only did he own his own business, but he also bought a large house with a few bathrooms and entered the upper class. He met all his mother’s material needs and spent time with her whenever he could. Moreover, he often donated large sums of money to the poor in secret, never holding a donation ceremony or giving interviews. All of this stemmed from the day many years ago when a rich man defended his dignity with his sincerity and conscience.

【答案】
Soon, there was a loud blaring noise to signal that the roller coaster was starting. Click, click, clunk, the roller coaster slowly inched out of the covered boarding area and into the launch and finally blasted off. As it accelerated, what I could only hear were the screams of excitement and the swooshing noises of the coaster car cutting through the wind. Gripped by fear, I squeezed my eyes shut, afraid of being shot out. At this moment, Christina’s tender voice came to my ear, “Please look out! You won’t regret experiencing it.” I summoned up courage to open my eyes, only to find we were boosting up a hill, the peak inching towards me slowly.
The roller coaster was at its peak getting ready to drop. Suddenly, it boosted up and shot forward at an unimaginable speed. Frightened yet excited, I screamed out instinctively. It seemed that I was swooping down uncontrollably. Previous fear and anxiety faded, giving way to the newfound exhilaration. I didn’t freak out again. Instead I opened my arms to embrace this unparalleled experience. Finally, we arrived at the ground safely. Through this memorable trip, I realized each risk we took was a step out of the comfort zone and a testament to our courage.

【答案】
Hearing that, Mr. Lim fell silent for a moment before approaching Luke. He looked at his two children with a mixture of shock and remorse in his eyes. He knelt down, gently wiping away Luke’s tears and said, “I’m so sorry, son. I’ve been so caught up in my own troubles that I didn’t see your love and effort. This is the most special birthday gift I could have ever received.” He then hugged Luke tightly, and soon Lisa joined in, their little bodies trembling with the remnants of fear and relief. Mr. Lim realized how selfish he had been, drowning in his own sorrow while his children were trying their best to bring joy to his life.
After the tension eased, Luke and Lisa sang a birthday song for Mr. Lim. Their voices, though a bit shaky from the earlier incident, were filled with love. Mr. Lim listened with tears in his eyes, feeling an overwhelming sense of warmth and happiness. Despite the ruined cake and the painted wall, this was the most precious moment for him. As they finished the song, Mr. Lim kissed his children on their foreheads, promising them that from then on, he would face life’s difficulties with a more positive attitude and cherish every moment with his family.

【答案】
And when I looked over at Ollie, he was doing the same thing! “This is the worst!” he whispered as he wiggled. “I feel like I’ m covered with a million mosquito bites.” “Me too,” I whispered back. “I wanted to get out of this costume right away!” But after exchanging a look with each other, we still hesitated since the result of the “creative” contest had not been announced and we were afraid that what we did before would make no sense. Overwhelmed by the nervousness and tolerating the strong itchy feelings, we just kept wiggling around, with our “leaves” trembling uncontrollably.
At that moment, Mr. Lee, the host of this year’s Halloween costume contest, called for everyone’s attention. “The winners of our ‘Be Creative’ costume contest are these two magnificent trees!” he announced excitedly with a beaming face. “Fabulous work!” he added and praised that they especially liked the little dance that made it look as if our leaves were rustling in the wind. The great news was, we actually won the contest! The not-so-great news came when we found out why we were so itchy — one of the many kinds of leaves we gathered turned out to be poison oak! What an unforgettable Halloween costume contest!

【答案】参考范文:
I walked over to knock on Ms. Garcia’s door, the wind chime in my hand. The door swung open. Ms. Garcia stood there, arms crossed, her expression guarded — until she noticed the sea glass glinting in my grip. “I… I shouldn’t have spoken to you that way.” I stammered, holding out the chime. Her gaze softened as she took it. “My husband used to handle the recycling. I didn’t realize it woke you,” she said quietly. A faint smile tugged her lips. I offered to help her sort bottles next week quietly. “I’ll save the glass for your chimes,” she replied, hanging it by her window. The first breeze sang through it, delicate as a sigh.
The next Tuesday, I awoke not to annoying clangs, but to a sound that made me sit up in wonder. Silver notes danced through my window — the wind chime’s song, carried by the dawn air. Outside, Ms. Garcia was carefully lining bottles inside her bin, cushioned by old newspapers. She glanced up, catching my eye through the window, and waved. I threw on a sweater and joined her. As we worked, she shared stories of her husband — how he’d taught her to garden, how they’d saved coins in a jar for trips they never took. By 7 a.m., the bin was full, silent, and my heart was fuller. The chime hummed again, a quiet understanding lingering in the air between our homes.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Alone, sad, I stood ankle-deep at the edge of the surf. The waves curled white lace around my toes and the salt wind stung my cheeks still damp with airport tears. Somewhere beyond the horizon lay my abandoned lover, my buried father and all the irreversible currents of life. I remembered everything heatbreaking, but now the sea whispered different truths in tidal breath-about impermanence, about surrender. I swam furiously, each stroke tearing through the surface film of grief. Surfacing beyond the breaker line, I floated staring at migrating geese in the sky, their cryings mingled with mine, dissolved in the endless blue.
The next day I did it again and again, swimming every day for three weeks. By the third week, my skin had learned the sea’s language. What’s more, my mornings began with checking wind directions rather than unforgettable memories. On the final day, sunlight pierced through clouds as I emerged from the waves. Standing up, in the water, I saw my reflection: my cheeks roughened by the wind, my eyes clear, like a rocky pool exposed at low tide. The water had carved new channels in me, carrying away the silt of old sorrows.

【答案】
Later that afternoon, I overheard a woman exclaiming, “Jellybean! What a name!” Entirely taken by surprise, I turned around and found she stopped to look more closely at the kitten. The woman tapped the bars, her face softening when the kitten pranced forward, her jet-black fur gleaming under the lights. “Come here, little candy,” she cooed, extending her fingers. Jellybean pressed her nose against the cage door, golden eyes blinking trustingly. I held my breath as the woman stood up decisively. “I’ll take her,” she said, adding with a chuckle, “I have been begging for a cat that sounds like dessert.” My vision blurred unexpectedly as I watched Jellybean being lifted from the cage, her tiny paws kneading the air in innocent triumph.
Two weeks later, I visited the woman’s house as a routine after adoption. The woman welcomed me in with a string of thanks. “I know you were the one who named her, and I’ve been wanting to thank you.” But deep down I knew it was I who should say thank you, for this gracious woman offered a cozy home to the cat. Then, in the kitchen I saw Jellybean sitting in sunny windows, sniffing at ladybugs walking across. The woman added, “She’s the sweetest thing — I just love her to pieces. But I don’t know if I would have noticed her if she hadn’t had that great name. It just suits her perfectly. She’s so bouncy and colorful...” I was grateful that the name allowed some humans to see beyond a dark mid-night coat into the rainbow of riches in a cat’s heart.

【答案】The first raindrop hit his cheek as Ethan inched toward the trembling edge. Raindrops began to patter, mixing with his sweat. “Thirty seconds, Ethan!” Jake called. Mock or motivate? He wasn’t sure. Taking a deep breath, he tried to keep calm as Coach had taught. One step. Another. The edge was inches away. The water below hissed like a snake, threatening to swallow him. Jump or run? His lungs seized/ His throat tightened. Then, a memory surfaced — his little sister’s voice last week: “You’re my hero, Ethan.” Determined, gritting his teeth, he jumped forward.
The water was colder than expected, but the darkness never came. Sunlight shone through the water, making the bubbles sparkle as he kicked upward. Breaking the surface, he gasped — not from panic, but exhilaration. The lakeside exploded with cheers. “You did it!” Jake yelled loudest. Shortly after, clutching his certificate, Ethan came to realize, “True courage isn’t fearlessness. It’ s choosing to jump despite all the fear.” Glancing at the board, now glowing in the sun after the storm, he cracked a smile. The water still scared him... but no longer controlled him.

Paragraph 1: When she opened it, cold wind blew in. There stood her father, his hair sparkling with snowflakes and a tired but warm smile lighting up his face. Beside him, a police officer held a large box. “Merry Christmas, my little star!” Dad cheered, pulling her into a bear hug. The officer explained how Dad had stopped to help dig out a family whose car was buried in snowdrifts. The box, Sarah discovered, was filled with cookies and thank-you notes from the family. But her breath caught when she spotted the white bandage wrapped around father’s reddened palm. “Don’t worry. It’s not serious,” father said. “Now, let’s go to the kitchen to make Christmas cookies”.
或Paragraph 1: When she opened it, cold wind blew in. Behind the police officer stood Dad, his coat covered with snowflakes. His face was red from the cold, but his eyes showed relief. “We found him stuck in deep snow,” the officer said. Sarah jumped into her father’s arms, her frozen fear melting into warm tears. Dad told her his truck couldn’t move in the heavy snow, and his phone had died after trying to call for help. “But I kept remembering our cookie promise,” he said softly, his voice shaking Then they thanked the policeman and went into the kitchen.
Paragraph 2: That night, they baked cookies in the kitchen. Using Mom’s old recipe book, Dad read the steps aloud, pretending to forget them until Sarah giggled. They cut out star-shaped cookies with shaky edges and reindeer missing antlers. Flour covered the table and their clothes, but they didn’t care. When the cookies were ready, Dad placed one shaped like a star next to Mom’s photo on the mantel. Outside, the snow had stopped, and moonlight lit the quiet street. Sitting by the fire eating warm cookies, Sarah leaned against Dad’s shoulder. She realized her Christmas wish hadn’t been about perfect cookies — it was about Dad’s arms around her, making their broken world feel whole again.

【答案】The gun fired after runners were ready. Katherine shot forward like a rocket. Rain stung my neck as she pulled ahead, the crowd’s cheers fading to background noise. My coach’s words — Run your own race! — echoed in my ears. Instead of watching Katherine, I focused solely on myself. The sound of my breathing, heavy and rhythmic, became my steady companion, guiding me through the rain. As the final lap unfolded, I recalled the countless hours of training, the sweat and the tears — all leading to this moment.
The finish line kissed my chest with onlookers roaring in excitement. Electronic boards flickered through rainfall: 1st place. My heart pounded in my chest, my lungs burning, but victory sang in my veins. At the awards, Katherine nodded at my gold medal. “You stopped watching others,”she said. It might have been a compliment. upon gazing at the shining medal. I finally came to realize that my true opponent was none other than myself, and every step on the track was a farewell to my lack of confidence.

【答案】参考范文:
But when we went to pick up our art bags by the front door, we found a big surprise! Ginger, who might not have been sleeping this whole time, had chewed our foam brushes, splashing paints all over the floor. “Oh no, Ginger!” I exclaimed, completely at a loss to the mess she had made. Mareya burst out laughing, “Looks like she wanted to join our art project!” Then it occurred to us that Ms. Williams suggested on experimenting with different styles. “Let’s not let this ruin our assignment,” I comforted. We decided to use some sticks instead of brushes to paint our new cute friend Ginger, feeling excited about the chance to create something fresh.
Then, we got down to making our portraits. We let our imaginations run wild, capturing Ginger’s playful spirit in different artistic styles. We drew her as a cartoon character and even in an abstract form that highlighted her energy. The process was filled with laughter and creativity, and we found ourselves enjoying the art of creation more than ever. When we presented our portraits to Ms. Williams the next day, her eyes lit up with excitement. “These are incredible!” she said enthusiastically. “You’ve both shown such creativity. Remember, art is about pushing boundaries and embracing the unexpected!” We left the classroom feeling proud and motivated to keep exploring our artistic abilities.

【答案】范文
The lump in my throat was now the size of a basketball. I fumbled with the edge of my shirt, trying to find the words. “I... I sanded every piece of wood for hours,” I managed to say, my voice cracking. “I wanted it to be safe for birds, so I made sure there were no splinters. Then I mixed the blue paint myself — added a little white to make it lighter, like the sky.” My hands trembled as I pointed to the roof. “I also drew the design for the roof slope and checked the measurements three times so rain wouldn’t leak in. And when the hammer slipped and hit my thumb, I kept going.” A few kids nodded, and Ava gave me a small smile.
I looked up to see if Luka was watching as I gave the nail a mighty hit. He was, and his eyes lit up. “Nice one!” he shouted. The class cheered, and I felt a rush of courage. “See?” I said, holding up the birdhouse. “I chose the nail sizes, too — small enough to not split the wood, but strong enough to hold it together.” Mrs. Williams stepped forward. “Michael, your project shows something important: taking pride in every step, even the hard ones. That’s all your own work.” I grinned, suddenly glad I’d stood up there. Maybe next time, I wouldn’t hide my head like a turtle.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Mia hesitated, torn between her guilt and the pull of her social life. Ultimately, she decided to be left alone and bake the pie for her grandmother. But as Mia stared at the recipe, her hands were trembling. She had always assumed baking was easy, but now she felt overwhelmed. Determined not to give up, Mia decided to trust her instincts. She recalled the way her grandmother’s hands moved — gentle yet precise — as she worked the dough. “Cold butter,” she muttered to herself, pulling it from the fridge. She cut it into small cubes, just as she had seen her grandmother do countless times. As she mixed the flour and butter, her hands began to find a rhythm, the dough slowly coming together. It wasn’t perfect, but it felt familiar, like a piece of her grandmother was guiding her. She could hardly wait to give this present to her grandmother.
Paragraph 2:
When Mia arrived at the hospital, her grandmother’s eyes lit up. The faintest hint of a smile tugging at her lips. “You made the pie?” she asked, her voice weak but filled with a quiet joy. Nodding, Mia carefully cut a slice, the golden crust crumbling perfectly under the knife. As her grandmother took a bite, “It’s perfect,” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. Mia felt a lump rise in her throat, the warmth of the moment wrapping around her like the scent of cinnamon and sugar. The memories, and the unspoken bond they shared come back. From that day on, Mia made a promise to herself: she would no longer allow the noise of life to rob her of the moments that truly mattered.

【答案】Upon opening the door, they were greatly shocked at the scene unfolding before them. The front yard once a perfect playground for children was now in a muddy mess. Especially shocking was the towering oak tree, which had provided shade in summer, yielded to the fury of the storm and now lay fallen, the once massive branches now like broken bones. Grandma’s cherished roses were uprooted, their vibrant petals scattering around. The family stood in stunned silence, their hearts heavy with grief. Grandma’s eyes welled up with tears, but she quickly composed herself. Slowly, she turned around, scanned everyone with a determined look and said firmly, “We’ll rebuild,” her voice a beacon of hope amidst the chaos.
The family nodded, their hearts swelling with resolve to do something the next day. When the first rays of sunlight cast a glow over the yard, the family rushed out. Suddenly, Tommy exclaimed, “Look!” pointing at the fallen giant, whose roots were amazingly half anchored in the earth, clinging stubbornly to life. “We can save it,” Grandma declared, her eyes sparkling with hope. The family immediately sprang into action. Grandpa secured ropes around the waist of the tree. The whole family began to pull the massive trunk with all their strength. Gradually, the oak tree started inching upward. With one final mighty push, it stood upright again. At this, everyone was overwhelmed with joy. Tommy suddenly realized they experienced another resilience story on this unforgettable birthday and together with the oak tree, they would embrace a new life after the storm.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Before long, the young sailor finished his meal and walked over to the flower woman’s table. Smiling warmly, he selected two blossoms, his eyes sparkling with compassion. “Merry Christmas,” he greeted, pressing one flower into his letter before handing her a twenty-franc note. When she stammered about lacking change, he leaned closer and whispered, “My gift for you.” Turning swiftly, he approached our table, the remaining flower held aloft like a torch in the gloom. “Sir,” he addressed me sincerely, “May I honor your wife with this?” He presented the flower to her, his gesture dissolving the tension that had choked the room. As he exited, a collective breath held, every eye followed him, the clinking of cutlery silenced by this unexpected act of grace.
Paragraph 2:
A few seconds later, Christmas exploded throughout the restaurant like a bomb. Not only did the flower woman leap to her feet, but Joseph, the pianist, whose fingers flying across the keys as if compelled by divine inspiration. My wife, her tears replaced by radiant laughter, swayed with the flower, her voice joining the carol filling the air. So infectious was the joy that the German father, who had previously scolded his son, drummed a bottle rhythmically. Even the French couple, their quarrels forgotten, clapped in unison. Had it not been for the sailor’s selfless act, that shabby restaurant might have remained a prison of misery. Yet it was he, a stranger bearing two francs’ worth of hope, who unlocked the chains of gloom, proving that Christmas resides not in perfection, but in shared humanity.

【答案】Paragraph1:
One night, another boy appeared at the door, saying “I don’t want a Popsicle; I just need to talk”. Surprised but concerned, I invited him in and offered a seat. He sat on the couch, looking down at his shoes, his face filled with anxiety. Slowly, he opened up about the argument he had with his best friend at school that day. I listened attentively, nodding occasionally to show I was there for him. After he poured out his feelings, I shared some stories of my own childhood conflicts and how I resolved them. By the end of our talk, his frown had turned into a faint smile. Before leaving, he thanked me earnestly, and I realized that our little Popsicle tradition had become a safe haven for these kids.
Paragraph 2:
I’ve sensed it’s more than Popsicles that bring these kids to our door. Beyond the sweet treats, it’s the sense of trust and understanding we’ve built. We’ve become their confidants, their listening ears. For us, these interactions have filled our retired life with purpose and warmth. We’ve witnessed their growth, their joys, and their sorrows. Each time the doorbell rings, it’s not just the anticipation of sharing a Popsicle but an opportunity to connect, to offer comfort, and to be a part of these young lives. In return, they’ve given us a new perspective on life and a deeper appreciation for the simple yet profound power of human connection.

【答案】One possible version:
A loud knock interrupted the silence. Hearing no response, Laura exchanged a worried glance with her partner. They pushed the door open, flashlights cutting through the dim apartment. Sarah lay motionless on the couch, her skin ghostly pale, lips tinged blue. Laura knelt beside her, checking for a pulse. “Weak but present,” she muttered, swiftly strapping an oxygen mask over Sarah’s face. As they lifted her onto the stretcher, Sarah’s trembling hand clutched a faded photo of Lily tucked in her pocket. “Stay with us,” Laura urged, her voice steady but urgent. Rain lashed the windows as sirens wailed through the night, carrying Sarah toward a hospital bed she could no longer avoid.
Laura later shared their rescue experience on social media. Her post — a raw account of hidden illness and a paramedic’s persistence — went viral overnight. Strangers donated to cover Lily’s surgery and Sarah’s treatments, while a local clinic offered free cancer care. Reporters interviewed Laura, who simply said, “Everyone deserves a fighting chance.” When Sarah regained strength, she hugged Lily tighter, whispering, “We’re not alone anymore.” The broken hallway lights in their apartment building were fixed by volunteers, symbolizing the unexpected brightness piercing their darkest hour. Years later, a thank-you letter to Laura hung beside Lily’s healthy heartbeat scans, a quiet reminder that compassion had rewritten their story one breath at a time.

【答案】Paragraph 1
When it was his turn again, Theo stood frozen for the longest moment. He didn’t composed himself until the announcer began the countdown. Wiping his sweaty palms on his pants, he was at a loss what to do, with his mind racing, whirr, whirr, like a washing machine on its fast spin. However, his superpower seemed to desert him and he missed the word. He flushed immediately, with eyes fixed on his feet, as if to avoid the stare of the audience. There was no doubt that he lost the game. Only then did he remember the school spelling bee and Alexa just missing the win. He had to admit that Deandra was right — he was absolutely a terrible winner, and now, a terrible loser.
Paragraph 2
The following Monday at school, Theo found Alexa in the lunchroom. Lowering his head, he wanted to escape but what Deandra said flashed into his mind. Finally, he gathered up his courage and apologized for his rudeness after he won the school bee. To his surprise, Alexa slid her books aside to make room for him and replied “It’s OK. How was the county bee?” “What a disaster.” Theo shrugged his shoulders and continued “Would you like to be my study partner for next time?” “Why not?” Alexa’s beam of smile seemed to wipe off Theo’s frustration and he was really expecting to be the next Alpha-best.
