The building swayed(摇摆) like a tree in the wind. I immediately hid under my desk, my heart pounding with fear. I could hear screams and the sound of breaking glass from outside. I was sure that was the end. Miraculously, the building did not collapse(倒塌). When the shaking stopped, I rushed out of the building with my colleagues. The streets were filled with dust and frightened people. Many buildings around us had been damaged. We later learned that it was a 7.0-magnitude earthquake. That night, we had to sleep in a temporary shelter in a park because our homes were unsafe to return to. The experience was terrifying, but it made me realize how fragile(脆弱的) life can be and how important it is to be prepared for natural disasters. 24. Where was the author when the earthquake started? A. In a park. B. In his car. C. In his office. D. In his home. 25. What did the author do when the earthquake became violent? A. He ran out of the building. B. He hid under his desk. C. Where did the author stay that night? A. In his office. B. In his home. C. In a hotel. D. In a temporary shelter. C Are flash floods becoming more serious? According to the Environment Agency, around 5.2 million properties in England alone are at risk of flooding. Climate change is bringing more unpredictable weather patterns, such as wetter weather and rising sea level. Therefore, protecting yourselves from flooding has never been more important. Here are some things you can do. First, stay informed. Download the weather app and allow notices. The app will provide you with real-time weather warnings allowing you to take appropriate measures. Extreme weather events are an unstoppable force — sometimes leaving the area will be your only safe option. Second, know the level of risk by looking at flood maps. You may be required to have flood insurance if you live in a high-risk area. Third, create an emergency plan. Make sure you always keep emergency supplies to last several days, including a first aid kit. Having a way of recharging your mobile phone is worth considering too. But be particularly careful when travelling by car. Don’t drive through flooded streets — it’s difficult to judge the water depth, and roadways hidden below the water can collapse. If floodwaters cause your vehicle to lose control, give it up and seek the higher ground. Rapidly rising water can sweep the vehicle away. Plan for the worst; hope for the best. The Met Office predicted that extreme rainfall events could be four times as frequent by the 2070s compared to the 1980s. In the face of increasing climate-related challenges, adopting a proactive approach to flood protection seems increasingly advisable. 28. Why does the author ask the question in Paragraph 1? A. To confirm an idea. B. To introduce a topic. C. To conclude the text. D. To express some doubts. 29. What are the drivers especially advised to do when travelling? A. Avoid driving through the flooded streets. B. Get rid of necessary supplies if necessary. C. Purchase flood insurance in advance. D. Keep the weather app updated over time. 30. What kind of writing skill does the author use in the last paragraph? A. Analyzing causes. B. Quoting sayings. C. Describing processes. D. Making comparisons. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. What is a flash flood? B. Do flash floods need controlling? C. Are flash floods becoming more serious? D. How do we protect ourselves from flash floods? D Based on a three-year-long study on millions of phones in ninety-eight countries, researchers found the global network of Android smartphones makes a useful earthquake early warning system(地震预警系统哪), which can detect(探测) earthquakes and give users valuable seconds to act before the shaking starts. Many countries have used traditional earthquake early warning systems with networks of earthquakes sensors to detect quakes and issue warnings across the affected area. Building such networks is expensive, and many areas where earthquakes are common do not have them. What they do have, however, is smartphones, which have built-in movement sensors. Using Android smartphones — which make up 70% of the global smartphone market — researchers developed the Android Earthquake Alert (AEA) system. “Although AEA is not always as timely as the traditional network detection, it can still detect small shaking during strong earthquakes,” says Allen, the leader of the study. Working on the same way as traditional earthquake detection systems, AEA system will send two types of warnings to the phone after detecting an earthquake. For earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher, the system sends “Take Action” warnings to users. These warnings are designed to draw users’ attention immediately and remind them to take protective actions. It also delivers “Be Aware” warnings to areas expected to experience a shaking of magnitude 3 or 4. To test how effective these warnings were, the researchers used search engines to collect voluntary answers. Results from around 15.5 million people showed that 87% of them did experience shaking, with 36% receiving the warning before the ground began to move, 28% during and 23% after. Now, the researchers are focused on improving the AEA system. “We think that we can continue to improve the quality of earthquake detection, and also improve on our strategies to deliver effective warnings,” says Allen. In the future, Allen and his teammates hope to use the same information to produce other disaster-reducing tools. Maps of ground shaking, for example, could help the emergency rescue after an earthquake. 32. What is AEA’s advantage over the traditional way? A. It has smarter sensors. B. It requires less funding. C. It sends earlier warnings. D. It detects smaller quakes. 33. What decides the type of warnings? A. Result of the earthquake. B. Site of the earthquake. C. Magnitude of the earthquake. D. Reason of the earthquake. 34. What do Allen’s words mean in paragraph 5? A. Technological advances prevent disasters. B. Researches on earthquakes are in demand. C. Quality of rescue tools requires improvement. D. The warning system needs further development. 35. What is the purpose of this text? A. To introduce a warning system. B. To compare two types of alerts.     C. To raise public safety awareness. D. To promote a disaster rescue tool. How to Stay Safe During a Typhoon When a typhoon strikes, the world outside can change from calm to dangerous in just a few minutes. The sky darkens, the wind grows wild, and heavy rain begins to fall with great force. 36 But staying calm and taking the right actions can make a big difference. Stay indoors and keep away from windows. During a typhoon, the safest place is always indoors. Once the storm begins, do not go outside, not even for a short look. Close all windows and doors tightly, and stay away from glass, which may break when hit by strong wind or flying objects. 37 Waiting indoors may feel long and boring, but it protects you from real danger outside. Be mindful of electricity and stay alert(警觉的). Strong wind and rain can be dangerous with electricity. If water begins to enter your home, turn off the main power in no time. Avoid touching wet plugs, wires, or electrical devices. Listen carefully to what’s happening around you. Sometimes a strange sound or sudden silence can mean trouble is near. 38 Follow official warnings and remain patient. 39 Follow the advice of local governments, even if the weather seems calmer for a moment. If the sky suddenly becomes calm, don’t be fooled — it is the “eye” of the typhoon that passes by. The wind can return even harder than before. So you should stay patient and wait for official news. 40 No one can stop the storm, but you can control how you face it. Take deep breaths, speak gently, and try to calm those around you. Help children, the elderly, or neighbors who might be alone. Courage grows when people care for each other. Kindness stands even in the strongest wind. A. The worst of the storm may be over. B. It is normal to feel fear at such a moment. C. A typhoon can change direction or strength at any time. D. Stay calm and support each other. E. You need to learn to fix the electricity by yourself. F. If you live high up, this rule is especially important. G. During a typhoon, attention saves more than strength does. Like all people who live long enough, I have lived through many darkness and seen so much suffering. Surrounded by green trees and blooming(盛开的) flowers, the five-floor teaching building looked bright and lively. The sunlight flooded in, warming the students and their wooden desks. High in the tree, a group of tiny birds chirped(啁啾叫) happily on the branches, their beautiful calls bringing the whole school to life. In Classroom 103 on the 4th floor, Mrs.Brown was teaching a geography lesson. “The Earth’s plates move very slowly,” she explained, pointing to a dynamic picture. “When they push against each other, earthquakes can happen. Remember, when an earthquake hits, calmness is the first step to self-rescue. Next you should…” Such earthquake safety lessons were held every month and earthquake safety procedures(程序) were practiced twice each term at Falmont. “Again! We have never experienced an earthquake before. Is this really necessary?” Tom whispered to his deskmate Lisa. “You never know.” Lisa continued taking notes attentively. Feeling bored, Tom looked out of the window. Suddenly, he noticed the birds flying away as if something terrible was happening. Then, a strong and loud noise, like a train made of thunder came from the north. It started with a slight shake. But the next second, the entire classroom shook heavily, and dust rained down from the ceiling. The lights in the classroom moved from side to side wildly, and the deafening crash of breaking glass rang out. “Earthquake!” Lisa shouted, with obvious fear in her voice. On hearing Lisa’s words, Tom jumped to his feet, crying and trying to rush out. Fear spread quickly among the class — some students stood still in their seats, their faces turning pale with terror; some students cried out, covering their ears with their hands. Everyone seemed to be out of control. “Remember what we have learned?” Mrs.Brown tried to calm the students down. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The moment the shaking stopped, Mrs. Brown sensed it was the best time to escape. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ( 10 / 10 ) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 专题06 Unit 2 Natural disasters 写作话题---自然灾害与防范 (单元测试—基础卷) (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1. What does the woman think is the most dangerous? A. A volcano. B. A hurricane. C. An earthquake. M: What do you think would be more dangerous? A volcano erupting or a hurricane? W: Volcanoes are scary, but I always think an earthquake is the worst thing that could happen. Having said that, if you don’t tidy your room before Dad gets back, that’s pretty dangerous! 2. What phenomenon caused the unusual sky color last night? A. A distant forest fire. B. Particles from a dust storm. C. Light pollution from the city. W: Did you see the eerie orange sky last night? So weird! M: Yeah. News said it’s smoke from northern wildfires, carried here by winds. Particles scatter sunlight. W: That explains the smoky air. Hope the fires end soon. 3. Why is the coastal area experiencing more flooding recently? A. Increased rainfall. B. Rising sea levels. C. Broken drainage systems. M: Another sunny day flood! The waterfront closed again. No rain at all. W: It’s sea level rise. It pushes high tides higher — old drains can’t work then. M: A tough problem that’s getting worse fast. 4. Where did the woman get the news? A. From TV. B. From the Internet. C. From a local. M: Did you hear about the volcano eruption? It’s all over the news. W: I don’t watch TV. But I saw many relevant pictures and videos posted online. It’s frightening to think about the ruins and the impact on the people living nearby. M: I hope the locals stay safe and that the rescue workers can manage the situation effectively. 5. What are the speakers talking about? A. How to prepare for natural disasters. B. Where to go after an earthquake. C. When to make a safety list. W: Mrs Fours, thank you for your great presentation! I’d like to know what we can do to prevent natural disasters. M: Well, there’s no way to prevent earthquakes and storms. But if we prepare, we can keep them from becoming disasters that kill or injure people. To be ready, we should make a safety list of what to do, where to go, and who to contact. 6. B 【原文】 W: Excuse me, sir, can you tell me how long this disaster has lasted? M: It’s almost two weeks. Everything has been burnt up. W: Have you ever gone through this kind of thing? M: Not in a lifetime. It used to be the hurricane season at this time of year, and floods might happen occasionally. W: What do you think should be done now? M: We need to support our firefighters. More volunteers are needed. People also should raise their awareness of environmental protection. W: Thank you, sir. This is Stella reporting from Mississippi. 8. Where does the woman probably live? A. In California. B. In Florida. C. In Texas. 9. What has given California a big hit recently? A. A hurricane. B. A fire. C. An earthquake. 10. How many houses did Hurricane Andrew destroy in Florida? A. 85. B. 200. C. 30,000. A 9. B 10. C 【原文】 W: Because of all the earthquakes and fires people living in California like me are crazy that’s it. M: But big earthquakes happen only once in a while. W: That is all too many. A big earthquake is a terrible disaster for the locals. M: You’re right. They have indeed happened a lot of fires. W: A recent fire destroyed eighty-five houses, killing eleven people and leaving more than two hundred people homeless. M: Still, it’s safer than Florida and Texas. W: Florida doesn’t have earthquakes and has less fires. M: But Florida just has hurricanes every year from June to October. W: But most of those hurricanes are harmless. M: Excuse me, the hurricane Andrew destroyed thirty thousand houses. 11. What changed the man’s original plan? A. The schedule of exams. B. The severity of the storm. C. The extent of the damage. 12. What will be dealt with first? A. The fallen trees. B. The damaged roof. C. The broken windows. 13. What is probably the woman? A. A repair worker. B. A marketing manager. C. A school official. A 12. B 13. C 【原文】 M: Hello there. I was asked to tell you about the extent of the damage to the main building, caused by the recent storm. W: Oh, that’s right. I take it that most of the damage is just to the main building. M: It is indeed. However, luckily, the damage is minor, and all of it can be fixed in one day. W: What will you be doing first? I understand you start at 8 in the morning. M: That’s right. We were going to remove the fallen trees, but we’ve been told there are exams in the morning, and I’m sure the sound will disturb all the students, so instead we’ll fix that leaky roof first. That’s a four-hour job since it involves considerable repair, not like fixing broken windows, which can be done quite quickly. W: So you’ll fix the broken windows after that, from midday? M: That’s right. 14. What is the function of the new technology? A. Putting out fires. B. Detecting fires. C. Making fires. 15. How many fires did California have in 2020? A. Around 50. B. About 400. C. Over 8600. 16. What size of fire can the new satellites discover? A. The size of a car. B. The size of a plane. C. The size of a football field. 17. What is the woman’s main concern? A. Saving animals. B. Saving trees. C. Saving humans. B 15. C 16. A 17. A 【原文】 W: We’re developing a new technology that can detect forest fires as soon as they start. M: That sounds amazing. Given how many fires there have been recently, it’s something the world desperately needs. W: Indeed. In 2020 alone, California has had over 8600 fires, losing roughly 4% of the state’s trees. M: That is truly mind-blowing. W: Yes. The other place where it will be useful is Australia. At the start of the year, there were 50 separate bush fires burning across the country. M: So how will your new detection system work? W: We’re going to use a new range of satellites which have heat cameras. M: Don’t other satellites have those? W: Yes, but none is so advanced. They can detect a fire the size of a football field. The new one can sense a fire the size of a car. M: And will that be enough of a difference to stop the fire from spreading? W: We believe so. Hopefully it will give firefighters enough time to stop it before it gets too big. If they get the plane up in time they could stop it dead. M: If it works, I really hope you get recognition for it. W: I just want to try and stop trees from burning, and more importantly, protect the poor animals that live in them. M: I know, we often only consider the human cost, never the animal one. 18. What threatens this city most? A. Wildfires. B. Storms. C. Floods. 19. What was the original purpose of the exhibition? A. To get money donations. B. To grow community art programs. C. To teach others about local issues. 20. What will the speaker do next? A. Invite others to speak. B. Share more local artworks. C. Present information on disasters. C 19. B 20. A 【原文】 W: Thanks for coming to this art gallery opening. As you can see, all the art here has been painted and created to represent and celebrate local natural beauty. We come from such a beautiful place, so it is very important to realize how at risk it is. I’m not saying this to scare anyone, but to remind us how much we love our planet and how important it is to protect what we love. Here, you’ll see images of hills on fire, powerful typhoons, and rising floods. Within our coastal city, the biggest danger is sea-level rise. Many local artists have painted our streets and train stations underwater to show how real these risks are. Before we open the room to guests, I want to share the origin of this show. The initial idea was not fundraising or even climate messaging. We simply wanted to expand art classes in our community centers. That modest goal grew into this exhibition as students, teachers, and neighbors offered their talent, stories, and support. Because of everyone of you, more workshops will launch next month. To thank you for helping us reach this moment, I’d like to invite several of our lead supporters to say a few words about the student program. A High School Field School is your opportunity to be an archaeologist. B 29. A 30. D 31. 根据第一段中“Are flash floods becoming more serious?(山洪暴发是否正变得更加严重?)”以及后文“According to the Environment Agency, around 5.2 million properties in England alone are at risk of flooding.(根据环境署的数据,仅英格兰就有约520万处房产面临洪水风险)”和“Here are some things you can do.(以下是一些你可以做的事情)”可知,作者在第一段提出问题是为了引入本文关于防洪的话题。故选B项。 29. 根据第五段中“But be particularly careful when travelling by car. Don’t drive through flooded streets — it’s difficult to judge the water depth, and roadways hidden below the water can collapse.(但在驾车出行时要特别小心。不要驾车驶过被淹没的街道——很难判断水深,水面下的道路可能会坍塌)”可知,特别建议司机在旅行时避免驾车通过被淹没的街道。故选A项。 30. 根据最后一段中“The Met Office predicted that extreme rainfall events could be four times as frequent by the 2070s compared to the 1980s.(英国气象局预测,到21世纪70年代,极端降雨事件的频率可能是20世纪80年代的四倍)”可知,作者将21世纪70年代与20世纪80年代的极端降雨事件频率进行了比较,运用了作比较的写作技巧。故选D项。 31. 通读全文,结合第一段中“Therefore, protecting yourselves from flooding has never been more important. Here are some things you can do.(因此,防范洪水比以往任何时候都更加重要。以下是一些你可以做的事情)”以及后文分点介绍的具体措施可知,本文主要介绍了如何保护自己免受山洪灾害。故D项“How do we protect ourselves from flash floods?(我们如何保护自己免受山洪灾害?)” D Based on a three-year-long study on millions of phones in ninety-eight countries, researchers found the global network of Android smartphones makes a useful earthquake early warning system(地震预警系统哪), which can detect(探测) earthquakes and give users valuable seconds to act before the shaking starts. 32. B 33. C 34. D 35. What they do have, however, is smartphones, which have built-in movement sensors. Using Android smartphones — which make up 70% of the global smartphone market — researchers developed the Android Earthquake Alert (AEA) system. 根据第三段“For earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher, the system sends “Take Action” warnings to users. 和“It also delivers “Be Aware” warnings to areas expected to experience a shaking of magnitude 3 or 4. 根据第五段“We think that we can continue to improve the quality of earthquake detection, and also improve on our strategies to deliver effective warnings (我们认为我们可以继续提升地震探测的质量,同时也可以改进我们发布有效警报的策略)”可知,Allen表示团队还能继续优化地震探测质量和警报发布策略,由此可推断该预警系统仍需要进一步的研发和完善。故选D项。 35. 根据第一段“Based on a three-year-long study on millions of phones in ninety-eight countries, researchers found the global network of Android smartphones makes a useful earthquake early warning system, which can detect earthquakes and give users valuable seconds to act before the shaking starts. 故选A项。 How to Stay Safe During a Typhoon When a typhoon strikes, the world outside can change from calm to dangerous in just a few minutes. B 37. F 38. G 39. C 40. 36. 上文“The sky darkens, the wind grows wild, and heavy rain begins to fall with great force. (天空变暗,狂风大作,暴雨猛烈袭来)”描述了台风天的危险景象,下文“But staying calm and taking the right actions can make a big difference. 37. 上文“Close all windows and doors tightly, and stay away from glass, which may break when hit by strong wind or flying objects. 38. 根据上文“Strong wind and rain can be dangerous with electricity. If water begins to enter your home, turn off the main power in no time. Avoid touching wet plugs, wires, or electrical devices. Listen carefully to what’s happening around you. Sometimes a strange sound or sudden silence can mean trouble is near.(强风和暴雨与电接触在一起可能会非常危险。 39. 根据后文“Follow the advice of local governments, even if the weather seems calmer for a moment. If the sky suddenly becomes calm, don’t be fooled — it is the “eye” of the typhoon that passes by. The wind can return even harder than before. So you should stay patient and wait for official news.(遵循当地政府的建议吧,即便此刻天气看似暂时平静下来。 40. 根据后文“No one can stop the storm, but you can control how you face it. Take deep breaths, speak gently, and try to calm those around you. Help children, the elderly, or neighbors who might be alone. Courage grows when people care for each other. Kindness stands even in the strongest wind.(没有人能阻止风暴的到来,但你可以控制自己面对风暴的方式。 善良即使在最猛烈的风暴中也能存在)”可知,本段讲calm、help others、care for each other,对应“保持冷静、互相帮助”。 Like all people who live long enough, I have lived through many darkness and seen so much suffering. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 “Remember what we have learned?” Mrs.Brown tried to calm the students down. She stopped Tom and quickly observed around as she shouted clear instructions: “Drop down onto your hands and knees! Cover your head and neck with your hands, arms or hard objects! Hide under your desks and hold on to their legs tight!” Inspired by her calmness, the panicked students gradually followed her words. Meanwhile, Mrs.Brown quickly opened the classroom door in case it became damaged and could not open. There were loud crashes of glass breaking and things falling to the ground, but the students remained still and waited calmly and quietly. The moment the shaking stopped, Mrs.Brown sensed it was the best time to escape. She signaled to her students to form two orderly lines as practiced, exiting the classroom and moving swiftly downstairs, covering their heads with their hands. Within two minutes, the whole class went downstairs and rushed to the playground. Soon students from other classes arrived too. All were safe and sound. The children could no longer hold back their emotions. They hugged each other, laughing and crying. All children, including Tom, finally understood the knowledge they learned in class and the seemingly boring practices had all turned into the power to protect their lives when danger struck. 1】Inspired by her calmness, the panicked students gradually followed her words.(运用了过去分词Inspired作原因状语) 【高分句型2】They hugged each other, laughing and crying.(运用了现在分词laughing and crying作伴随状语) ( 14 / 21 ) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $听力考试正式开始。What do you think would be more dangerous? We come from such a beautiful place, so IT is very important to realize how at risk IT is. I'm not saying this to scare anyone, but to remind us how much we love our planet and how important IT is to protect what we love. Here you'll see images of hills on fire, powerful typhoons and rising floods within our coastal city. The biggest danger is sea level rise. Many local artists have painted our streets and train stations underwater to show how real these risks are. Before we open the room to guests, I want to share the origin of this show. The initial idea was not fundraising or even climate messaging. We simply wanted to expand art classes in our community centers. That modest school grew into this exhibition as students, teachers and neighbors offered their talent, stories and support because of every one of you. More workshops will launch next month. To thank you for helping us reach this moment, i'd like to invite several of our lead supporters to say a few words about the student program. Thanks for coming to this art gallery opening. As you can see, all the art here has been painted and created to represent and celebrate local natural beauty. We come from such a beautiful place, so IT is very important to realize how at risk IT is. That modest goal grew into this exhibition as students, teachers and neighbors offered their talent, stories and support because of every one of you. More workshops will launch next month to thank you for helping us reach this moment, i'd like to invite several of our lead supporters to say a few words about the student program.
