Like a lot of Canadians,Andrew Suboch grew up knowing little about Canada's national
game--lacrosse(长曲棍球),other than watching some neighbours pass a ball using old wooden
sticks
It was only when his two children started playing the game as part of their training for hockey
(that he took much notice. His son,Jack, went on to excel at lacrosse and he now plays for
the Vancouver Warriors of the National Lacrosse League.
Both children came up through the Mimico Minor Lacrosse organization,in the Toronto area,
which has been around since 1890.When the number of players in the kids'league began falling in
2014,Mr Suboch, who is a personal injury lawyer in Toronto, volunteered to step in.He offered to
sponsor the "Baby Peanut"programme, which introduced children ages 3 and 4 to the game.
Thanks to his sponsorship, more than 100 children play for free each spring for eight weeks.
They spend an hour every Saturday learning the game and every player is given a lightweight stick
and a shirt."They are taught to catch,throw,pass and shoot in a non-contact environment,"he
said."You get them running around.Get them away from the screen. It is our national game,so
you get them exposed. And sure enough, they caught on."
To fund the programme,Mr Suboch came up with a novel idea.He started searching his
neighbourhood for used appliances, metal and electronic items, such as computers and cellphones.
He sorted the material and sold it to a local recycling centre."Word has gotten out,so people now
will give me their used electronics and metal stuff,"he said. The recycling effort raises around
$20,000 annually, which covers the cost of the lacrosse programme.
Mr Suboch said watching the kids play has given him a lot of satisfaction and joy."Not only is far
less junk going to landfill sites,"he said,"but we've also got kids who are not in front of a screen."
4.Why did Andrew start sponsoring the "Baby Peanut"programme?
A.His son asked him to support the lacrosse game.
B.He wanted to increase participation in the kids'league.

Jason,a straight-A student from University of Pennsylvania, uses the term "pseudo-working"
to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working
hard-he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night-
but, because of a lack of focus and concentration,he or she doesn't actually accomplish much.
This phenomenon can be seen in most colleges. For example,at Dartmouth there was a section
of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day and the students I used to see in there
late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working.
By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these
students are damaging their brain's ability to think clearly and efficiently to accomplish the task at
hand.In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.
The bigger problem here is that most students don't even realize that they're pseudo-working.
To them pseudo-working is work-it's how they've always done it,and it's how all of their friends
do it.It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way.Straight-A students,on the
other hand, know all about pseudo-working.They fear it,and for good reason it not only wastes
time,but it's also mentally tiring.
In fact, the most important skill in becoming a better student is the ability to get work done
quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive science research concludes that about
50 minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material learned per time unit.
So how can students manage to study efficiently? One key factor is captured in the following
simple formula:work accomplished=time spent X intensity of focus.Pseudo-working features a
very low intensity of focus. Therefore,to accomplish something by pseudo-working,you need to
spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach,on the other hand, maximizes intensity in order to
minimize time.
8.Which of the following phenomena is an example of pseudo-working?
A.Tom is busy taking notes while attending a lecture.
B.Alice and Sara are sitting on the sofa reading their favourite books.
C.Mike is sitting in the study room in preparation for a final exam quietly.
D.Jack spends a long time in the library on his essay while listening to music.
9.What can be inferred from Paragraphs 3 and 4?
A.Straight-A students believe some tasks are worth twice the effort.
B.Too much thinking may weaken the brain's ability of the students.
高一下英语·0黑白题081
C.Negative effects of pseudo-working are not fully realized by many students.
D.Students will get good grades once they realize that pseudo-working is ineffective.
10.What does the underlined word "optimal"mean in Paragraph 5?
A.Longest.
B.Best.
C.Least.
D.Affordable.
11.Why does the author mention the formula in the text?
A.To show the positive effect of working hard.
B.To prove the necessity of accomplishing work.
C.To emphasize the importance of concentration.
D.To explain the reason for spending much time.

When planning my wedding,I was determined not to get caught up in the "perfect day",but
to have a relaxed, informal celebration. My husband and I ended up having a lovely time.
“Pursuit(追求)of perfection is a prison,”says Moya Sarner,an NHS psychotherapist(心理医
生).Many of us are driven by the unconscious(下意识的)wish that if we could just have the
perfect body, the perfect job and the perfect family, then we would be happy. For that reason,it
can get in the way to happiness in life.
The psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott wrote about the importance of the "good enough mother"
who meets her baby's needs timely, but is not perfect. He said perfect is harmful. To meet every
need immediately,whenever it is demanded,slows down a baby's growth,robbing them of the
opportunity to feel disappointed and learn to get the toy for themselves.
Winnicott believed that while perfection is not a good thing, acceptance of imperfection is.If
we cannot develop the ability to accept imperfection in ourselves and in those around us,we can
have no self-confidence,no sustainable relationships and no fulfilling career. If we're always trying
to build a perfect life,we aren't really living the one we're in.
How do I know all this?I am a perfectionist in recovery.I've started to recognize my pursuit of
perfection has influenced my relationship and my parenting. How can you be a good partner if you
expect everyone else to fit your own narrow expectations? How can your child grow if they sense
that they always need to colour precisely inside the lines you've drawn out for them?
We need to go further than accepting imperfections. We need to learn to appreciate their
humanity and beauty.Imperfections are why people will pay a calligrapher to handwrite invitations
when a computer can produce a perfect version of the same invitation for less money and in less
time.So for a more delicious life,and ultimately a better one,I choose imperfectionism.

My heart sank when I received the news-no salary again. How would I manage the increasing
bills,the groceries and my children's needs?The future seemed hopeless.With a heavy heart,I
hurried to pick up my two children,my mind racing wildly.
That's when I saw it-a wallet, lying on the sidewalk. It was as if fate had thrown me a lifeline
()Hope came to me as I approached it.The wallet was large, and when I opened it,my
eyes widened in disbelief at the sight of a large amount of cash inside it.I hesitated for a moment,
torn between the immediate relief that this money promised and the morality()of keeping it.
Curiosity led me to search through the wallet. The things it contained were a photo and a
couple of business cards. No matter how much I wanted to take the contents,my moral principles
and inner voice told me not to do this. The decision became clear:I couldn't keep this money. It
wasn't rightfully mine.
I picked out a business card. The name and number were there. With a deep breath,I dialed
the number and explained my find to the voice on the other end.The voice came, completely
emotionless, warning that they would come to me.He hung up without even saying "thank you".I
was angry with the impoliteness.I even regretted my decision, but my conscience()did not
allow me to go back on my choice.I had told the voice where I lived and went to get my children.
Shortly after we arrived home,a large black car suddenly pulled up to our house. The driver
got out and knocked on the door. When I opened it,the driver told me that the owner of the wallet
wanted me to personally hand over his wallet.
