第二节读后续写(25 分)
参考范文(约 152 词)
Zhou Ming took off his own jacket and put it around the old man. "No, no, young man, you'll catch cold," the old man said, trying to give it back with shaking hands. Zhou Ming pressed it gently on his shoulders and sat down beside him. Under the shelter, he took out his phone and dialled the number the old man remembered. It rang twice before a man's voice, rough with worry, asked who was speaking. Zhou Ming explained in a few words. The man said he would come at once, and thanked him again and again. The rain showed no sign of stopping, and the old man's teeth began to knock. Zhou Ming moved closer and held the plastic bag over the old man's knees.
An hour later, a car stopped in front of them. A man in a restaurant uniform jumped out before the wheels had quite stopped, and the old man stood up so quickly that Zhou Ming had to catch his arm. The son held his father's hands and could not speak for a moment. Then he turned to Zhou Ming and asked for his school and his name, but Zhou Ming only smiled and shook his head. "Go home, Grandpa," he said. "Your soup is getting cold." He watched the car drive away into the rain, then walked home with his jacket wet through. His mother was waiting at the door. She asked where he had been; he said only that he had missed the bus. But the warm feeling in his chest was worth more than a dry coat.

The Books That Travel on Grass
Li Na was nine when she first noticed the problem. She lived in a small village in the hills, and the nearest bookshop was forty kilometres away. Her school had a reading corner, but the same forty books had stood on its shelves for years. Every student knew every page by heart.
In the summer after Grade 7, Li Na's cousin came back from the city with two large bags of books his classmates no longer wanted. Li Na spent a week putting them in order. There were picture books, science books and books of stories about the sea, which she had never seen.
Then came the harder question: who would read them? Most children in the village were busy helping their families in the fields after school. They had no time to come to the school at all. Li Na decided that if the children could not come to the books, the books would go to the children.
With two classmates, she built a travelling reading corner. They put the books in three wooden boxes on the back of an old bicycle, and they rode from one end of the village to the other every evening at about six, when people were sitting outside with watermelons and tea. The first evening, a group of boys came out of curiosity. By the end of August, thirty children waited for the bicycle each evening.
The idea was not easy. Rain came, and the boxes had to be carried into a doorway. Some adults said that a travelling library was nonsense. But Li Na answered with one sentence: \"A book on a shelf is a book that has been hidden.\" By the time she left for senior high, the village had eleven boxes of books and four teenagers willing to ride the bicycle.
Years later, the reading corner still travels. Li Na says that she is prouder of the bicycle than of her examination results.
24. What was the problem of Li Na's village school?
A. It had no reading corner at all. B. Its books were old and few.
C. It was forty kilometres from the city. D. Its students had no time to read.
25. What happened first according to the passage?
A. Li Na's cousin brought books back from the city. B. Li Na complained about the village bookshop.
C. Li Na opened a reading corner at school. D. Li Na found thirty children waiting for books.
26. How did Li Na feel when she saw the books from the city?

Why Your Phone Charges More Slowly Every Year
Many people notice that a phone which used to be full in an hour now needs two. The battery has simply grown older, and an older battery holds less energy.
A battery stores energy in a liquid-like material inside it. Every time you charge and empty the battery, a very small amount of this material is damaged. After a few hundred full charges, the damage can no longer be hidden. First, the battery can hold less. Then, the phone's software reduces the charging speed, because a fast charge of an old battery causes heat, and heat damages it further.
Temperature is the second thief. A battery works best between 15 and 35 degrees Celsius. On a hot day, a phone left on a car seat may reach 50 degrees while it is charging. In this case, the software cuts the speed to protect the battery, and the owner thinks the charger is broken.
The third factor is the charger. A cheap charger sends electricity in an uneven flow, which the phone accepts only slowly. In one study of 300 users, 62% of slow-charging complaints disappeared after the user changed to the charger made for the phone.
Some habits slow the ageing of a battery: do not leave a phone charging all night on a soft bed, keep it out of the sun, and keep the battery between 20% and 80% rather than running it to zero. These changes will not make an old battery new, but they keep it useful for longer.
28. What happens to a battery after a few hundred full charges?
A. It becomes heavier. B. It can store less energy.
C. It charges more quickly. D. It stays at one temperature.
29. According to the study, how many of the 300 users found the problem gone after changing the charger?
A. About 60. B. About 120. C. About 190. D. About 300.
30. What does the fourth paragraph mainly do?
A. It gives examples of good chargers. B. It compares two kinds of phone batteries.
C. It explains the reason for the slow charging. D. It offers advice on how to save battery power.
31. What does the author suggest doing to keep a battery useful for longer?
A. Charging the phone all night on a bed. B. Running the battery down to zero every day.
C. Keeping the battery between 20% and 80%. D. Charging the phone in direct sunlight.

Sleep and the Grade: What 1,200 Students Told Us
Doctors say that teenagers need eight to ten hours of sleep. In a survey of 1,200 senior high students in our city, only one student in four said that they got eight hours or more on school nights. The survey also asked about their average marks in the last three exams, and the answers were put into four groups. The chart below shows the average mark of each group.
Bar chart: average exam mark of four groups of students (out of 100)
100 |
80 | ████ ████ ████
60 | ████ ████ ████ ████
40 | ████ ████ ████ ████
20 | ████ ████ ████ ████
0 +-------+-------+-------+-------
<6h 6-7h 7-8h >8h (hours of sleep a night)
62 70 78 83 (average mark)
The chart does not prove that sleep alone raises marks. Students who sleep less often stay up late for another reason: their work is unfinished, or they are worried about it. But the difference between the first and the last group is twenty-one points, and no single subject showed a smaller difference than fifteen.
The teachers in the survey noticed something about the first group. Students who slept less than six hours often could not remember in the morning what they had learned the night before. One teacher described it as "pouring water into a cup that has a hole in the bottom". Sleep is not the opposite of study; it is the last step of it.
The writers of the report give one suggestion above all others: decide on a time to stop studying, and then stop, even if the last page is unfinished. A student who stops at eleven and remembers half of eight hours' work is better off than one who stops at one in the morning and remembers nothing.
32. What can we learn from the chart?
A. Students who sleep 6-7 hours get lower marks than those who sleep less than 6 hours.
B. The longer students sleep at night, the higher their group's average mark.
C. Over half of the students sleep eight hours or more.
D. Marks fall when students sleep more than eight hours.
33. What does the author think of students who sleep less than six hours?
A. They are simply lazy. B. They often study harder than others.
C. They remember little of the night before. D. They usually get better marks in maths.
34. What does the saying "pouring water into a cup that has a hole in the bottom" mean?
A. Learning without enough sleep is soon lost. B. A cup full of water is heavier than an empty one.
C. Students should drink water while studying. D. Sleep is the opposite of study.
35. What is the writers' main advice to students?
A. Remember to read the last page again. B. Finish every page before going to bed.
C. Fix a time to stop studying and keep it. D. Study in the morning instead of at night.

The Phone on the Desk: Six Small Rules for Exam Week
It is nine in the evening and the desk is ready: three books, a notebook, a glass of water. Everything is in its place. ____36____ The phone lies beside the books, face up, and it has already told you twice that someone has sent you a message.
Most students do not fail to study in exam week because the work is too hard. They fail because they sit down in the right place at the right time and still cannot begin. ____37____ Two hours pass, the books are still on page one, and the evening has disappeared. The first rule, then, is simple: decide where the phone will spend the evening before you open the first book.
Put it in another room, or in a drawer, and give it a job: to stay there until nine forty-five. A phone in sight is a phone in mind, even when it is silent and face down. ____38____ If you must keep it nearby, turn it face down and switch off every sound. Your brain does not need to see a message to think about one.
____39____ A note sent to a friend is easier to refuse than a note sent by the phone. One student in our class writes three lines on paper before she begins, telling her best friend what she is going to finish that evening. The friend does not write back; she only reads it the next morning. That small promise is enough to keep the phone on the desk with its face down.
Breaks are not the enemy, as long as they are decided in advance. Study for twenty-five minutes, then stand up for five. During those five minutes you may pick up the phone, but only for one thing, at the time you chose. ____40____ A break you did not plan is not a break; it is the end of the evening.
None of these rules is difficult. Together they do one thing that no amount of willpower can do alone: they make the phone a little less convenient than the book in front of you. That small difference, repeated every evening of exam week, is usually enough.
A. The hard part is starting, not finishing.
B. If it is in another room, you will forget it for a while.
C. This is exactly the situation that eats most study evenings.
D. Sending one message makes it much easier to send a second.
E. Reading in silence is better than reading with music.
F. A promise made to someone else is stronger than one made to yourself.
G. Set an alarm, or the five minutes will quietly become fifty.

Li Wei was twelve, and he could not swim. Half of the boys in his town learned in the river before they were eight, so this was not unusual in itself. What was unusual was that Li Wei was afraid. When his classmates ran down to the water in summer, he stayed on the bank, ____41____ to be busy with his shoes, and told everyone that he liked watching.
His uncle, who had been a swimming teacher in the city, came to stay for the summer. On the first evening he took Li Wei to the river and asked him to walk in up to his knees. Li Wei stood at the edge and did not move. His uncle did not laugh and did not ____42____ him. He sat down on a stone and waited, and the two of them watched the water for a long time.
"You are not the first," his uncle said at last. "When I was your age I was ____43____ of it too. The water is not angry with you. It only does what it does." Then he taught Li Wei the one rule he had learned from his own teacher: do not fight the water; ____44____ with it.
For the next week they came to the river every morning. Li Wei learned to put his face in for one second, then for three. He learned to float on his back while his uncle held two fingers under his head. ____45____, on the eighth morning, his uncle took the fingers away, and Li Wei stayed on the water alone.
It was the moment he had been afraid of and had wanted for years. He did not shout. He did not ____46____ either. He simply lay there, looking at the sky, while the river carried him slowly past the tall grass. When he finally stood up, his uncle was smiling but said ____47____.
That silence, Li Wei understood later, was more ____48____ than any praise. Words would have told him that he was being tested; the silence told him that he had already passed.
In August he swam across the narrow part of the river for the first time. His uncle walked along the bank beside him, ____49____ without saying a word. When Li Wei climbed out, his legs were shaking. He sat on the grass, looked back at the water that had frightened him for years, and began to laugh.
What he had learned was not only a ____50____. He had learned that fear does not become smaller when you ____51____ it; it becomes smaller when you walk towards it, one ____52____ step at a time.
Years later, when Li Wei became a teacher, he took his students to the pool every spring. To the ones who stood at the edge, he said exactly what his uncle had said to him: courage is not the ____53____ of fear, but the decision to move ____54____ it is still there. Then, like his uncle, he sat down and waited, because he knew that the only thing a frightened child needs is someone who ____55____.

It was already dark when Zhou Ming finished his last class of the day. The November wind pushed the rain against the windows of the teaching building, and the playground was a wide sheet of water. He pulled his hood (兜帽) up and started walking. The bus stop was across the road, and the last bus would come in ten minutes.
He stopped. Under the shelter of the bus stop, an old man was sitting alone on the metal seat, holding a plastic bag against his chest. Water ran down the front of his coat. He had no umbrella.
"Grandpa, are you all right?" Zhou Ming asked.
The old man looked up slowly. "I came to see my son," he said. "He works in a restaurant near this school. But I have lost the address, and my phone is dead. I have been waiting here since four o'clock."
Zhou Ming looked at the empty road. The last bus had gone. His home was twenty minutes away on foot, and his mother would be waiting with hot soup. The old man's hands were shaking.
The rain grew heavier. Zhou Ming thought of his warm room, and of his grandfather, who had once waited for him outside a school gate in the same kind of weather.
