A nine-year-old kid was sitting at his desk when suddenly there was a puddle (水潭、泥坑) between his feet and the front of his trousers was wet. He thought his heart was going to stop because he couldn't possibly imagine how this had happened. It had never happened before, and he knew that when the boys found out he would never hear the end of it. When the girls found out, they would never speak to him again as long as he lived.
He prayed this prayer, “Dear God, I need help now! Five minutes from now I'm dead meat!” He looked up from his prayer and here came the teacher with a look in her eyes that said he had been discovered. As the teacher was walking toward him, a classmate named Susie was carrying a goldfish bowl full of water. Susie tripped (绊倒) in front of the teacher and dumped (倒) the bowl of water in the boy's lap. The boy pretended to be angry, but all the while was saying to himself, “Thank you. Lord!”
Now all of a sudden, instead of being the object of ridicule, the boy was the object of sympathy. The teacher rushed him downstairs and gave him gym shorts to put on while his trousers dried out. All the other children were on their hands and knees cleaning up around his desk. The sympathy was wonderful. But as life would have it, the ridicule that should have been his had been transferred (转移) to someone else — Susie. She tried to help, but they told her to get out.

Eleven years ago, Ms. Liivand moved to Miami, Florida, where she continued swimming in the ocean. In one training session, she nearly wound up swallowing (吞) some plastic that was floating in the sea.
That experience made her think of all the sea animals facing similar pollution every day. She decided she wanted to work to make people more aware of plastic pollution.
She began swimming with a special single swimming fin attached to both of her feet. This rubbery “monofin” (单鱼鳍) allows her to swim by kicking both of her legs together. “Swimming without using my arms is similar to how dolphins swim,” says Ms. Liivand. She believes that swimming with a monofin “sends a bigger message”.
Ms. Liivand first set the world record for swimming with a monofin in 2019 off the coast of California. In 2020, she broke the record again in Miami, Florida. A year later, she set a new Guinness World Record again in Florida. For the last year, Ms. Livand has been getting up at 4 every day, putting on her monofin, and going swimming. To help improve her strength, she sometimes even pulled other people in the water.
On May 7, Ms. Liivand broke the record once more, this time swimming the length of a full marathon. It took her 11 hours and 54 seconds to swim 26. 2 miles. The water was rough, and she ran into a few problems, but she didn’t stop. “I got hurt by jellyfish,” she said, “And kept telling myself that it was not the time to cry.”
To keep her energy up, a friend followed her in a kayak (皮艇) and gave her food and water from time to time. Along the way, Ms. Liivand picked up all the trash she found and put it in the kayak. By the end of her marathon, the kayak held three bags full of trash.
8. What inspired Ms. Liivand to swim with a monofin?
A. Her own experience. B. Her love for dolphins.
C. The increasing water pollution. D. The sight of painful sea animals.
9. Which word best describes Ms. Liivand?
A. Generous. B. Determined. C. Intelligent. D. Tolerant.
10. What can we infer about Ms. Liivand from the text?
A. She intended to be a top swimmer.
B. She committed herself to protecting the sea.
C. She got world recognition for sea protection.
D. She proved to be an absolute perfectionist.
11. What did Ms. Liivand do in the swim on May 7?
A. She got some treatment. B. She had a break in the kayak.
C. She pulled others in the water. D. She picked up rubbish in the sea.

On social media, you may see "BM girls", who wear small skirts, tiny T-shirts and skinny jeans. The group is named after the Italian fashion brand Brandy Melville. It says its clothes are “one size fits all”.
However, most clothes the brand provides for girls are in small sizes, according to British newspaper The Sun. The brand’s idea of “one size fits all" has made many girls feel uncomfortable.
"For me, the problem was not the fact that I couldn't purchase your clothes. The root of my frustration is in the humiliation I felt when I realized that ... I just wasn't good enough for the Melville brand," young girl Andy Esmond wrote on the website Odyssey. "I got the message loud and clear: If you don't have an ideal body type, we would rather you not wear our clothing."
Esmond is one of many girls around the world who are dissatisfied with their body shapes. According to a 2018 survey conducted by Youth Select Committee in the UK, 8 in 10 teenage girls in the UK want to change their weight or body shape. Tn China, more than half of teenagers want to lose weight to make themselves look better, according to a 2018 survey by Southern Weekly.
But fashion trends like the Brandy Melville clothing line do nothing to ease the anxiety of negative body image. Instead, they feed it further, noted Coppell Student Media. In order to achieve such an "ideal” image, some girls develop eating disorders. Even worse, this trend may lead to low self-esteem, depression and hopelessness.
“The idealization of thinness can be a key factor in worsening the illness and preventing recovery, and fashion retailers should respect diversity in people's natural body shapes and sizes,“ Beat, the UK's leading eating disorder charity, told Fabulous Digital.
After all, beauty doesn't come in a box, or in one form. Just recognize that we are all different and that is something to be celebrated. In fact, accepting your true self can display a natural beauty that cannot be ignored.
12. What can we know about the group "BM girls"?
A. They are an American fashion brand. B. They only buy Brandy Melville clothes.
C They love to wear small-sized clothes. D. They always share what they wear online.
13. Why are many girls dissatisfied with the brand Brandy Melville?
A. Because it offers limited sizes in clothing.
B. Because it produces too expensive clothes for them.
C. Because it provides all customers middle-sized clothes.
D. Because it has poor customer service.
14. How do fashion trends like one-size-fits-all influence consumers?
A. They help people to improve their body image.
B. They set new standards for clothing production.
C. They encourage people to accept their body image.
D. They cause some girls to develop unhealthy body images.
15. What should fashion retailers do according to Beat?
A. Promote the idea of wearing comfortable clothes. B. Help customers recover from their illnesses.
C. Value differences in body shapes and sizes. D. Encourage customers to wear different clothes.

A summer storm brought heavy rainfall without warning in Missouri. The sky turned an ominous (不祥的) shade of gray as thick clouds gathered rapidly. Lightning flashed across the horizon, followed by the deafening roar of thunder. Wind blew hard through trees, bending branches and sweeping away leaves. Despite the chaos, there was a strange beauty in the storm’s raw power. Six inches of rain caused floodwaters to pour into the streams, causing them to burst their banks. The rainfall quickly flooded parts of the city. As the storm passed, the air grew still, leaving behind a fresh landscape.
Two boys, 15-year-old Dominic Viet and 16-year-old Joseph Diener, escaped the water rise by riding their bikes to higher ground. They were heading home during the storm when they suddenly heard a young woman’s scream for help. They searched the area, trying to locate the woman. To their shock, they spotted her holding onto a basketball hoop in a nearby court, which had become submerged (淹没) in 6-to 7-foot-deep floodwater. The helpless woman was struggling to keep her head out of the water.
The boys noticed the young woman earlier in the day as she swam in the area with a friend. Hours later, deep floodwaters from the nearby stream pulled her into the engulfed (吞没的) basketball court. She was quickly trapped in high floodwaters and trying to stay floating.
Watching the basketball court transformed into what looked more like a muddy pond, the boys stopped their bikes. They could see the woman sinking more down every second. Her head was barely above the water. “We must get her out as soon as possible,” Dominic said. As some people standing by dialed 911, the boys knew there was no time to waste.

When school was over, the boy walked over to Susie and whispered, “You did that on purpose, didn't you?” Susie whispered back, “I wet my trousers once, too!”

词句猜测题。根据划线部分上文“A nine-year-old kid was sitting at his desk when suddenly there was a puddle (水潭、泥坑) between his feet and the front of his trousers was wet. He thought his heart was going to stop because he couldn't possibly imagine how this had happened. (一个九岁孩子正坐在书桌前,突然他的两脚之间出现了一滩水,裤子的前襟也湿了。他觉得自己的心脏都要停止跳动了,因为他无法想象这是怎么发生的。)”和下文“When the girls found out, they would never speak to him again as long as he lived. (当女孩们发现后,她们再也不会和他说话了,只要他活着。)”可知对于男孩来说这是一件尴尬,丢脸的事情,所以推断划线句意思是他将被男孩们无休止的嘲笑。故选D。

C. They love to wear small-sized clothes.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. C

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Without thinking about the risks, they quickly jumped into the water. The boys quickly swam out to the woman. The water was still rising rapidly. In the water were floating objects. They struggled to swim, trying to avoid dangerous things. Eventually, they managed to reach the woman. They each grabbed one of her shoulders and held her up. Holding tightly onto the woman, they desperately swam with her to the safety of dry ground. Suddenly, some rapid currents tried to pull them down and the three were almost submerged in currents.
At that critical moment, some emergency workers and lifeguards arrived. Without hesitation, they approached the three and carried them out of the water. People standing around also gave necessary assistance. The two boys were exhausted, out of breath. And the young woman was in danger. Immediately, the emergency workers performed first aid on the young woman and rushed her to the hospital. People present were impressed with the two boys’ brave actions. They said, “What they did is really amazing. They saved a life that day.” With a smile, a boy said, “We did it because it was the right thing to do.”
