There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college. King's Art Centre A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend tees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists. You could attend a class teaching you how to 'learn from the masters' or get more creative with paint ---- free of charge. The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee. The Botanic Garden The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University. The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss. Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals. The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called 'Hissing Sid' is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun. Byron's Pool Many stories surround Lord Byron's time as a student of Cambridge University, Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of "mess and drunkenness". However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I'm not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his roans. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village. It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron's Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don't trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf- ----over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool. 36. As mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for_____. A. attending the masters' class B. working with local artists C. learning life drawing D. seeing an exhibition 37. A. surrounded by fields B. owned by Lord Byron C. located in Grantchester D. discovered by Virginia Woolf 40. What is the passage mainly about? A. Some places for weekend break B. He must have read about Robeson’s extraordinary feats of daring and skill on the football fields of Rutgers. “I imagine,” he would begin, “that Mr. Paul Robeson woke up one morning to find there was more to the day than playing football. I know I did (my father played football for Iowa State) . I imagine he looked around him. He saw that plenty of his people already were preachers; there were enough morticians (殡仪业者) to reach from here to kingdom to come. I imagine Mr. Robeson decided then and there he would be what there never had been before. And he was.” I don’t recall Kenneth Hamilton ever saying what it was Paul Robeson became besides a football star. But surely he was referring to Robeson’s powerful singing voice. Yet what came through clearly to me at the time was this: If one were to become anything, it would have to be not only the best but wholly original, a new idea. This concept sank deep into my consciousness. Imperceptibly (不知不觉地) ,I grow up yearning for the unusual, seeking something unique in myself. I longed not just to write, but to newly write and like no one else. Kenneth Hamilton wanted no less for his youngest child. “Like no one else,” he had been no less himself. Graduating from Iowa State Business College in the early 1890s when it was an achievement when a black man completed high school, he began his search for employment. One day, the banker for whom his mother worked as a cook asked that young Kenneth be sent around to the bank, where there was a suitable job for him. He hurried over to the bank, absolutely amazed at this sudden stroke of luck. Dressed in starched collar and gray business suit, he wondered what he would become. Kenneth Hamilton walked directly into the bank and was promptly handed a mop and a bucket. He threw both the length of the establishment and turned on his heel never to return. Perhaps he should have accepted that first mop and bucket, but I’m rather glad his imagination wouldn’t permit him. For now I have pleasure of remembering him as a man who would not allow mind or body to be limited by another’s reality. I could have wanted no less for a father. 41. According to the first paragraph, Kenneth Hamilton and Paul Robeson were similar because they ________. A. were both talented singers B. both played football for Iowa state C. both had aspirations for things greater than sports D. both, at one time, aspired to be preachers 42. Which of the following best exemplifies what the author refers to as the “wholly original, a new idea” (in paragraph 2) ? A. The author’s resolve to be unlike any other writer. B. The author’s choice to write about her past experiences. C. Kenneth Hamilton’s decision to play football. D. Paul Robeson’s determination that he would not be a preacher. 43. How did Kenneth Hamilton feel when he was told there was a suitable job for him in the bank? A. grateful but concerned B. eager and surprised. C. overwhelmed but hopeful D. frustrated and discouraged 44. The passage suggests that the author’s admiration for her father is the result of ________. A. his willingness to submit to society’s expectations of him B. the expectations he placed on his mind and body C. the imagination by which he undertook his daily assignments D. his courage in seeking a bank job in the 1890s 45. Which of the following statements is RIGHT? A. Kenneth Hamilton wanted to be a preacher before. B. Kenneth Hamilton would not allow his mind or body to be limited by another’s reality. C. Kenneth Hamilton’s achievement of education didn’t permit him to accept the job that the bank offered him. D. Influenced by Kenneth Hamilton, the author wanted to be a writer. C 42. A 43. 故选A项。 根据第四段的“He hurried over to the bank, absolutely amazed at this sudden stroke of luck(他急忙赶到银行,对这突如其来的好运感到非常惊讶)”可知,当被告知银行有合适的工作时,Kenneth Hamilton感到急切且惊讶。 根据最后一段的“For now I have pleasure of remembering him as a man who would not allow mind or body to be limited by another’s reality(现在我很高兴记得他是一个不愿让自己的思想和身体被他人的现实所限制的人)”可知,作者对父亲的敬佩源于他不让自己的思想和身体被他人的现实所限制,即他对自己思想和身体的高要求。 根据最后一段的“For now I have pleasure of remembering him as a man who would not allow mind or body to be limited by another’s reality(现在我很高兴记得他是一个不愿让自己的思想和身体被他人的现实所限制的人)”可知,Kenneth Hamilton不允许自己的思想或身体受到他人现实的限制,所以B项的说法是正确的。故选B项。 C The Damage that aging does to a body extends all the way down to the cellular level. But the damage increased by cells in older muscles is especially severe, because the cells do not reproduce easily and they become weaker as their mitochondria (线粒体), which produce energy, reduce in energy and number. A study, however, suggests that certain sorts of exercise may remove some of what time can do to our mitochondria. Exercise is good for people, as everyone knows. But scientists have surprisingly little understanding of its cellular impacts and how those might vary by activity and the age of the exerciser. So researchers recently conducted an experiment on the cells of 72 healthy but sedentary (久坐的) men and women who were 30 or younger or older than 64. After baseline measures were established for their aerobic (有氧的) fitness, their blood-sugar levels and the gene activity and mitochondrial health in their muscle cells, the volunteers were randomly assigned to a particular exercise program. Some of them did intense (强烈的) weight training several times a week; some did brief interval training three times a week on exercise bicycles; some rode exercise bikes at an appropriate pace for 30 minutes a few times a week and lifted weights lightly on other days. A fourth group, the control (对照组), did not exercise. After 12 weeks, the lab tests were repeated. In general, everyone experienced improvements in fitness and an ability to regulate blood sugar. But more unexpected results were found in the biopsied (活组织检查) muscle cells. Among the younger subjects who went through interval training, the activity levels had changed in 274 genes, compared with 170 genes for those who exercised more appropriately and 74 for the weight lifters. Among the older group, almost 400 genes were working differently now, compared with 33 for the weight lifters and only 19 for the appropriate exercisers. Many of these affected genes, especially in the cells of the interval trainers, are believed to influence the ability of mitochondria to produce energy for muscle cells; the subjects who did the interval exercise showed an increase in the number and health of their mitochondria — an impact that was particularly pronounced among the older cyclists. It seems exercise could help contain the decline in the cellular health of muscles associated with aging, especially if it was intense, says Dr. Sreekumaran Nair, the study’s senior author. In fact, older people’s cells responded in some ways more strongly to intense exercise than the cells of the young did — suggesting, he says, that it is never too late to benefit from exercise. 46. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. exercise Might Benefit Aging Muscles B. Exercise Might Increase Aging Muscles C. Exercise Might Do Harm to Mitochondria D. Aging Mainly Occurs in the Cellular Level 47. What can we know about the experiment mentioned in Paragraph 2? A. Volunteers cannot be good at exercising. B. All volunteers must have the same baseline. C. It was carried out among the youth of different sexes. D. Volunteers received a random particular exercise program. 48. How does the author develop Paragraph 3? A. By analyzing every group’s different data. B. By comparing every group’s training time. C. By listing every group’s different training. D. By describing every group’s training results. 49. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ______. A. the experiment did not get expected results B. riding exercise bikes has no influence on the volunteers C. weight lifting is the most useful training among these exercises D. interval training brings stronger influence to the elder than to the youth 50. The underlined word “contain” can be replaced by “______”. A. change B. stop C. record D. cause 【答案】46. A 47. D 48. C 49. D 50. 根据第二段中的“So researchers recently conducted an experiment ... After baseline measures were established for their aerobic fitness, their blood-sugar levels and the gene activity and mitochondrial health in their muscle cells”尤其是最后一句 “the volunteers were randomly assigned to a particular exercise program.” 根据第三段的内容“Some of them did intense (强烈的)...; some ...; some...” 根据最后一段划线部分的前文“Many of these affected genes, especially in the cells of the interval trainers, are believed to influence the ability of mitochondria to produce energy for muscle cells; the subjects who did the interval exercise showed an increase in the number and health of their mitochondria — an impact that was particularly pronounced among the older cyclists.”可知,“大多数受到影响的基因——尤其是进行间歇训练的志愿者细胞中的基因——都被认为影响了线粒体为肌肉细胞制造能量的能力;进行了间歇运动的实验对象表现出了线粒体数量和健康状况的提高——这个影响在年纪较大的脚踏车运动者中尤其显著”以及划线后的“older people’s cells responded in some ways more strongly to intense exercise than the cells of the young did — suggesting, he says, that it is never too late to benefit from exercise.” 分析选项可知,划线句的“It seems exercise could help contain the decline in the cellular health of muscles associated with aging”意为“运动似乎有助于抑制与衰老有关的肌肉细胞健康的下降”,可推断出“contain”为阻止或抑制,故选B。 A。 D Failure is probably the most exhausting experience a person ever has. There is nothing more tiring than not succeeding. We experience this tiredness in two ways: as start-up fatigue(疲惫) and performance fatigue. In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it has either too boring or too difficult. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel. Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first. Years ago, I was asked to write 102 essays on the great ideas of some famous authors. Applying my own rule, I determined to write them in alphabetical(按字母顺序), never letting myself leave out a tough idea. And I always started the day’s work with the difficult task of essay-writing. Experience proved that the rule works. Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle. Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do the job right. Its difficulties appear so great that, however hard we work, we fail again and again. In such a situation, I work as hard as I can-then let the unconscious take over. When planning Encyclopaedia Britannica (《大英百科全书》), I had to create a table of contents based on the topics of its articles. Nothing like this had ever been done before, and day after day I kept coming up with solutions, but none of them worked. My fatigue became almost unbearable. One day, mentally exhausted, I wrote down all the reasons why this problem could not be solved. I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. Relived, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep. An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution clearly in mind. In the weeks that followed, the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind proved correct at every step. Though I worked as hard as before, I felt no fatigue. Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing. Human beings, I believe must try to succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired. 51. People with start-up fatigue are most likely to ________. A. delay tasks B. work hard C. seek help D. accept failure 52. What does the author recommend doing to prevent start-up fatigue? A. Writing essays in strict order. B. Building up physical strength. C. Leaving out the toughest ideas. D. Dealing with the hardest task first. 53. On what occasion does a person probably suffer from performance fatigue? A. Before starting a difficult task. B. When all the solutions fail. C. If the job is rather boring. D. After finding a way out. 54. According to the author, the unconscious mind may help us ________. A. ignore mental problems B. get some nice sleep C. gain complete relief D. find the right solution 55. What could be the best title for the passage? A. Success Is Built upon Failure B. How to Handle Performance Fatigue C. Getting over Fatigue: A Way to Success D. Fatigue: An Early Sign of Health Problems 【答案】51. A 52. D 53. B 54. D 55. With rising rents and record numbers of young people having to move with their parents, it's clear that we are a moving generation. As a student in Leeds I moved three times in four years in London it was seven times in three years. Regularly having to load our possessions into laundry bags and boxes takes a lot of our finance and energy, but the effect on our book collections is rarely considered. Keeping a collection of beloved books in a damp flat with no shelves, which you'll probably have to move out in six months' time, is a challenge. Deciding which books to keep and which to reject becomes increasingly difficult. Do you hold on to the books you know you'll reread or do you keep the to-be-read pile intact ? Donating books to a charity shop or local school may be virtuous, but when you haven't had time to read them since your last move, it becomes depressing. There's a copy of Much Ado About Nothing I've been moving around with for nearly a decade because it is the only piece of Shakespeare in the marketplace. “Just buy a Kindle!” you might argue - but for many people, books are more than just books. They offer us an emotional connection to the past, to the person who gave them to us. They are a way to brighten up a dark flat; they are a link to home; they are the hardest thing to move and the most enjoyable thing to unpack. They can't be removed. So what if you are already lacing your second move this year and can't bear the thought of pensioning off more of your beloved books? You start reading more. Read all the books in your current bedroom and work out if they're worth the trip; give away as many books as you can; leave books with trusted friends to be reclaimed at a later point. Start looking at your books creatively. 56. Why has the moving generation appeared? (no more than 15 words) 57. What makes the author keep a copy of Much Ado About Nothing? (no more than 10 words) 58. What is the main idea of the fourth paragraph? (no more than 10 words) 59. What does the underlined phrase “pensioning off” in Paragraph 5 mean? (no more than 3 words) 60. What would you do with your books when you have to move? Give a persuasive reason, (no more than 25 words) 【答案】56. Because the rents are high and young people have to move with their parents. 57. The fact that it is rare on the market. Or: That it is the only piece of Shakespeare in the marketplace. Or: The fact that the only piece of Shakespeare in the marketplace. 58. The reason why books can't be removed. Or: The effect of books on people. Or: The importance of keeping books. 59. Getting rid of /Removing /Ridding/Abandoning/Deserting 60. Open. One possible version: I will take my books with me wherever I move because books are important to me and they can offer me knowledge and pleasure. 根据第一段的“With rising rents and record numbers of young people having to move with their parents, it's clear that we are a moving generation.”(随着房租的上涨,以及越来越多的年轻人不得不和父母一起搬家,很明显,我们是搬家的一代。) Because the rents are high and young people have to move with their parents. 根据第三段的“There's a copy of Much Ado About Nothing I've been moving around with for nearly a decade because it is the only piece of Shakespeare in the marketplace.”(有一本《无事生非》跟着我搬了近十年,因为它是市场上唯一的莎士比亚作品。) The fact that it is rare on the market./That it is the only piece of Shakespeare in the marketplace./ The fact that the only piece of Shakespeare in the marketplace. 根据第四段““Just buy a Kindle!” you might argue - but for many people, books are more than just books. They offer us an emotional connection to the past, to the person who gave them to us. They are a way to brighten up a dark flat; they are a link to home; they are the hardest thing to move and the most enjoyable thing to unpack. They can't be removed.”(“买一台Kindle就行了!” The reason why books can't be removed./ The effect of books on people./The importance of keeping books. 根据下文的“give away as many books as you can; leave books with trusted friends to be reclaimed at a later point. 故猜测划线部分所在句子“So what if you are already lacing your second move this year and can't bear the thought of pensioning off more of your beloved books? 故填Getting rid of /Removing /Ridding/Abandoning/Deserting 【60题详解】 主观题。 I will take my books with me wherever I move because books are important to me and they can offer me knowledge and pleasure. 注意: (1)词数100左右; (2)可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯; ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Blissful Moments Between Pages Books are quiet companions that enrich my world. Reading The Little Prince taught me to cherish innocence, while biographies fuel my ambition to chase dreams. I stick to a daily routine: 15 minutes of poetry at dawn to refresh my mind, and historical novels before bed to wander through the past. 36. B Like many Americans, my father, Kenneth Hamilton, must have heard Paul Robeson sing over the radio at one time or another. He threw both the length of the establishment and turned on his heel, never to return. C The Damage that aging does to a body extends all the way down to the cellular level. D By describing every group’s training results. A. change B. stop C. record D. cause D Failure is probably the most exhausting experience a person ever has. A. delay tasks B. work hard C. seek help D. accept failure 52 What does the author recommend doing to prevent start-up fatigue? 54. According to the author the unconscious mind may help us ________. A. ignore mental problems B. get some nice sleep C. gain complete relief D. find the right solution 55. What could be the best title for the passage? A. Success Is Built upon Failure B. How to Handle Performance Fatigue C. Getting over Fatigue: A Way to Success D. With rising rents and record numbers of young people having to move with their parents, it's clear that we are a moving generation. As a student in Leeds I moved three times in four years, in London it was seven times in three years.
