①Sleep for humans almost always means there is a bed or a mat near here. Animals, however, have many different ways of sleeping.
②For warmth, some animals sleep in groups, such as lions, monkeys, penguins and so on. Elephants also sleep in a group, but they sleep in groups for protection. The larger elephants make a circle around the younger elephants. The larger elephants sleep standing up, while the younger ones lie down to sleep.
③Some animals sleep in trees. Birds will lock their feet onto a tree to keep from falling out of the tree. Other animals, like squirrels, make nests (筑巢) in the trees to sleep in.
④Most animals look for dry places to sleep. However, ducks often sleep in water. They hold hands when they sleep in groups to keep from floating away (漂走).
⑤Most animals lie down to sleep. However, some large animals, like horses, can sleep standing up. The flamingo sleeps standing on just one leg.

In the future, people may travel to Mars by water-powered spaceship! Today’s spaceships are fine for getting things into space, but they are not so good at traveling long distances. These spaceships burn chemical fuels (燃料), and they are very expensive. Scientists say that a water- powered spaceship could make the trip to Mars much cheaper. The idea is just in the planning stages now, but scientists think such a spaceship could be developed soon.
The key to the water-powered spaceship is the engine (发动机). Regular engines push spaceships by burning fuel. The water engine will use steam, created by solar panels (太阳能板) that heat water to a high temperature. Of course, the spaceship will have to carry a lot of water for the long trip to Mars. Today’s spaceships could not carry that much water. But scientists think that a spaceship blown up like a balloon will be able to…
One US company has already developed a spaceship like this. These spaceships are made of a strong material. Two of them have already been sent up into space, using rockets and then later filled with air. “Balloon” spaceships could be very large and carry enough water for a long trip. With the “Balloon” spaceships, enough water could be carried to power the engines and grow food during the trip. And the people on the spaceship might even get to take a hot bath!
Scientists say the biggest advantage of such a spaceship would be cost. The “Balloon” spaceship uses water to push it through space and costs about one thirtieth of a normal spaceship. Such savings naturally encourage continued research into balloon spaceships and water engines. If these scientists are correct, we may soon be on our way to Mars in a spaceship powered by water.
31. Which sentence best describes the main idea of the passage above?
A. The key to the water-powered spaceship is the engine.
B. In the future people may travel to Mars by water-powered spaceship.
C. One US company has already developed a spaceship like this.
D. Scientists say the biggest advantage of such a spaceship would be cost.
32. What do you think is omitted (省略) at the end of the underlined sentence?
A. use steam B. push spaceships C. heat water D. carry that much water
33. Besides growing food, what else might astronauts do with the rest of the water?
A. Take a hot bath. B. Freeze dangerous things.
C. Blow up a balloon. D. Change the surface of Mars.
34. What’s the biggest advantage of a water-powered spaceship?
A. It’s stronger. B. It’s safer. C. It’s cheaper. D. It’s bigger.
35. On which website can we probably read this passage?
A. www.freedictionary.com/power B. www.mooc.cn/music
C. www.chinadaily.com.cn/culture D. www.space.com/spaceflight

My name is Jeff. I like learning foreign languages. When I retired (退休) in 2018, I could speak three foreign languages. At that time, my biggest wish was to learn a new one.
Later, I watched a program about Chinese culture on TV. I was so interested in it that I made the decision to learn Chinese. I found a cultural center in the north of London by chance. It offered Chinese language courses fit for me. In March 2019, I began to learn. To attend the classes, I left my home at 5 a.m. every Saturday and drove 3 hours to the cultural center. But this didn’t stop me. After class, I practiced a lot. Through learning, I developed a love for Chinese poems and joined in activities like Chinese poetry readings. I increasingly dreamed of visiting China.
My Chinese teacher Mr. Liu always mentioned “It’s better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books”. He suggested that I should take part in a study tour in China. So in August 2024, I visited Xi’ an with my classmates of the cultural center. During the trip, as the student best at Chinese among us, I tried to act as an interpreter (口译员). I helped my classmates in many ways like asking the way and shopping in Chinese. This experience encouraged me to study further.
The British often say “Learning is a lifelong pursuit (追求)”, which means“It is never too late to learn”. I will keep on learning Chinese, hoping to be a lifelong learner. I believe that learning Chinese will bring even more possibilities to my life.

My 2025 and 2026
The new year is coming. Looking back on 2025, I had many wonderful experiences. In study, I worked hard and made great progress in English, especially in speaking. I also took a trip to a beautiful city with my family during the summer vacation, which broadened my horizons.
For 2026, I have made some resolutions. First, I will keep on improving my study, especially in math, by doing more exercises and asking teachers for help. Second, I plan to develop a new hobby, like playing the guitar, to relax myself. Third, I will pay more attention to my health by exercising at least three times a week and eating more vegetables.
To achieve these goals, I will make a detailed plan and stick to it every day. I believe I can make 2026 a better year.
