Unit 7 Charities
Integration
UNICEF and other charities
Reading
1. What does UNICEF provide to children?
2. What else do you think UNICEF can do to help children around the world?
It provides clean water and food, education and healthcare to children.
I think UNICEF can also focus on mental health. Many children go through very stressful situations like wars or natural disasters. UNICEF can provide more programmes and trainings to help children with their feelings and mental well-being.
1. Compare the work UNICEF did in the past (when it was set up) and
now. What stays the same and what changes?
Reading
Read UNICEF: for every child, everywhere again. Then answer the following questions.
UNICEF was set up in 1946 by the UN to help children and young people in difficult situations. Today it still acts quickly in emergency situations and makes sure that children get help in time.
Today it works in over 190 countries and areas, giving long-term help like providing clean water and food, education and healthcare.
2. How does it show its “power” according to the article?
3. What can we teenagers do to support UNICEF’s work?
Reading
It shows “power” by working in over 190 countries and areas, providing help including clean water and food, education and healthcare. Besides, it works closely with governments to develop programmes to help and protect children.
As teenagers, we can support UNICEF by raising awareness about children’s issues among our peers and in our communities. We can also help by raising money through school activities, or volunteering our time for related events.

Johan is a boy from a small village in Malawi. He lives with his parents and three younger sisters. The family depends entirely on their small piece of land. In some years, the harvest was so bad that they could only eat one simple meal a day. Johan often went to bed hungry, which made him feel tired and weak all the time.
One day, a World Food Programme (WFP) officer visited Johan’s village school to assess the children’s health. He saw that many children, like Johan, were undernourished. He explained that good nutrition is essential for children to grow, learn and stay healthy.
