Have you ever heard of the “Mona Lisa”? It is one of the most famous paintings in the world. Painted by Leonardo da Vinci, a great artist in the Italian Renaissance (文艺复兴) period, the “Mona Lisa” has attracted millions of visitors to the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.
The painting shows a woman sitting upright in a chair with her hands folded. Her face shows a mysterious (神秘的) smile that has puzzled people for centuries. Some people say the smile changes depending on how you look at it. When you look at the eyes, the smile seems more noticeable, but when you look at the mouth, it seems to disappear.
Scientists have studied the “Mona Lisa” using modern technology. They found that Leonardo da Vinci used a technique called “sfumato” (晕涂法), which means “smoky” in Italian. This technique makes the edges of the figure and the background blend (融合) together softly, creating a sense of depth and mystery. The use of colors is also very subtle (微妙的). The background has a cool, blue - green tone, while the woman's skin has a warm, yellow - brown tone, which makes her stand out.
Another interesting thing about the “Mona Lisa” is its history. It was painted around 1503-1506. Leonardo da Vinci may have worked on it for several years. After his death, the painting passed through many hands. It was even stolen in 1911! The thief, Vincenzo Peruggia, was an Italian who believed the painting should be returned to Italy. He kept the painting in his apartment for two years before he was caught. The “Mona Lisa” was finally returned to the Louvre Museum, where it remains today.
1.Where is the “Mona Lisa” now?
A.In Italy. B.In the United States. C.In France. D.In England.
2.What makes the smile of the “Mona Lisa” so mysterious?
A.The use of bright colors. B.The technique of “sfumato”.
C.The shape of the mouth. D.The background of the painting.
3.What happened to the “Mona Lisa” in 1911?
A.It was bought by a rich man. B.It was damaged by a visitor.
C.It was stolen by an Italian. D.It was moved to another museum.
4.What does the underlined word “technique” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Skill. B.Tool. C.Style. D.Material.

A.The life of Leonardo da Vinci. B.The history of the Louvre Museum.

When Matty Sallin was studying art and technology at New York University, he got an interesting task for the final exam: Create something for the ordinary family. He decided to create an alarm clock.
“To get up in time, many people have to use an alarm clock every morning. But the sound of the clock is extremely noisy and unpleasant,” he says. (So before he started to design the new clock, he asked different people what they’d like to wake them up in the morning.) A lot of them said, “The smell of bacon (培根).”
So Sallin and his two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock: a wooden box with a pig face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon to wake people up. He explains, “There’s no danger of burning, because I built it carefully. It uses special light bulbs (灯泡) instead of a fire for cooking and turns off automatically (自动地) after ten minutes.”
Just a few easy steps are required to set the “alarm”. “What you need to do is to put a few pieces of bacon inside the box the night before, and set the alarm,” says Sallin. “If you set the alarm for 8:00, it will turn on at 7:50 and slowly cook for ten minutes under the bulbs. Then the bulbs turn off and a fan blows the smell out through the nose of the pig. So the pleasant smell of bacon will wake you up. There will be no more noisy alarms. Then you can open the door on the side and pull the bacon out and eat it.”
When Sallin was a kid, he spent a lot of time making drawings of inventions. “I wanted to make a lift in my back yard and a special tree house.” he says. “But I never really thought I’d become an inventor!”
Sallin got an A for his alarm clock and went on to invent other things-but people continue to email him every day asking where they can buy his alarm clock. If he decides to produce and sell his special alarm clock, maybe he can build a successful business out of it.
1.How many people worked together on the new alarm clock?
2.How long does it take the alarm clock to cook the bacon?
3.Why are light bulbs used for cooking bacon instead of a fire?
4.What do you think of the new alarm clock? Write 30 words or more.

A.Skill. B.Tool. C.Style. D.Material.
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The life of Leonardo da Vinci. B.The history of the Louvre Museum.
C.The mystery of the “Mona Lisa”. D.The use of modern technology in art.

Do you know that paper is one of the most important inventions in human history? Every year, people around the world use billions of tons of paper. But do you know how paper is made? Most paper is made from wood. First, workers cut down trees and turn them into wood pulp (纸浆). Then, they make the pulp into paper. It takes about 17 trees to make one ton of paper. That means we cut down millions of trees every year just for paper.
Paper is very useful in our daily life. We use it to write, to print books, and to wrap things. But we also waste a lot of paper. Every day, people throw away tons of used paper. If we reuse and recycle paper, we can save many trees. Recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees and a lot of water. It also helps to reduce pollution.
In many countries, schools and companies have started recycling programs. They collect used paper and send it to factories to be made into new paper. We can also do our part at home. Small actions can make a big difference.
1.What is most paper made from?
2.How many trees does it take to make one ton of paper?
3.Why do schools and companies send used paper to factories?
4.What will you do to save paper in your daily life? (Write 30 words or more)
When Matty Sallin was studying art and technology at New York University, he got an interesting task for the final exam: Create something for the ordinary family.

While music makes Jay Chou worldwide popular, he becomes much more than a musician. After trying his hand at acting and making movies, Chou turns his focus on the art world. The pop star shows his art collection in his music videos. Chou’s love for art doesn’t come out of the blue (突如其来). According to the pop star, his first contact (接触) with art goes back to a very early time when he was born. Chou’s mother worked as an art teacher,so his childhood was around art. With the growth of age, . Up till now, he has not only showed people lots of music creations, but also organized many art exhibitions. The latest one, “Art Encounters (邂逅) With Jay” was open in Xuhui, Shanghai in October, 2023.
Art often makes Chou think deeply, and that’s why the pop singer is so interested in it. One great lesson he learns through art is to keep an open mind. For example, the way of dealing with a scene (场景) is different from an artist to another. And different people often understand a piece of art differently. The true value of an artwork (艺术作品) is not in its price, it’s in the viewer’s feelings and experiences.
Chou sees art as the bridge for communicating different views and values. By organizing art exhibitions, he wants to help more people enjoy art. The next time you look at a painting, a poem or a song, pay attention to how it makes you feel. Then ask your friends about their feelings and ideas. In the end, you may understand why Chou and many other people love art, and why we all need some art in our lives.
