The future of live music
Technology has always played an important part in the development of pop music— 1 the live shows that the bands perform to the way we listen to music in our homes or on the move. However, advances in technology over the next few years may bring even bigger changes.
Holograms
For around 50 years, people of all ages have been enjoying ABBA’s live music, but since 1982, when the band played their last show, fans have had little hope of seeing their favourite group live on stage again. That is now about to change as the band has announced plans for their first shows in nearly forty years. The four members of the band will not be on the stage together. 2 , they will appear as holograms. The holograms will show the band as they looked back to 1979, when ABBA was the biggest band around the world. And they won’t be the only band to have 3 to the stage via holograms. In 2018, Freddie Mercury appeared in hologram form alongside Queen in Las Vegas, even though he died more than 25 years ago.
Virtual Reality (VR)
VR technology has made lots of progress recently. You may soon be able to enjoy watching your favourite band live 4 even leaving your house. Developers have been making plans to launch a new app that will allow fans to watch live concerts that are being streamed directly to VR headsets. This will allow you to watch the band from the crowd or even on stage. And all of this will cost you about a tenth of the ticket price for the venue.
These advances in technology are very 5 and promise to make live music experiences more 6 and immersive than ever before.

When you listen to people speaking a language you don’t understand, it may sound like the words are travelling past your ears quite quickly.
But some languages do seem to be spoken faster than 1 . Even if you know a little Japanese or Spanish, watching a TV show in those languages is not 2 ! And there’s a good reason for this—they are spoken faster!
Speakers of these languages use more syllables (音节) per second, according to a 2019 study. In those two languages, speakers use almost eight syllables per second. Mandarin (普通话), for example, was spoken at just over five syllables per second. But that doesn’t mean that conversations in Mandarin last a lot 3 than those in Japanese. Now, researchers have found that while there are 4 in the speeds at which languages are spoken, the speeds at which people express information are all about the same.
So how does that 5 ? To understand more, the researchers looked at each syllable in the texts and at how much information each one conveys (传达). There are some single-syllable words that give us quite a lot of information; for example, the words “hope” or “love” in English. These give us much more information than many single syllables that are nothing more than sounds or parts of words. Some languages express rich information with just 6 sounds so speakers don’t have to use many words to share the same message.

The tiger is a very special animal in Chinese culture. In most cases, it represents bravery, strength and authority. But sometimes it stands for cruelty and danger.
What about a smiling tiger? In China, Xiaomianhu, or “tiger with a smiling face”, is used to describe people who appear to be kind and friendly, but actually have dangerous intentions and plans.
Zhilaohu , or “a paper tiger”, is another Chinese term where the tiger is seen in a less positive way. Making paper models is a long-cherished traditional folk art in China. People usually use bamboo sticks and paper to create all kinds of things. For instance, craftsmen make paper models of houses, furniture, cars, televisions, washing machines and even smartphones to be burned as offerings to the dead at funerals. They also make large paper models of zodiac animals (生肖动物), like the rabbit, ox, dragon, rooster and tiger, to celebrate the traditional Chinese Lantern Festival.
Naturally, the term “paper tiger” gradually found its way into the Chinese colloquial (口语的) language. Former Chinese leader Mao Zedong once used it to describe imperialism and the atomic bomb (原子弹), meaning that they seem powerful and scary but are actually weak or ineffective.
Today, this term is still widely used to describe one’s rivals and opponents. So, in the eyes of Chinese people, a smiling tiger is a real threat and a paper tiger is a false threat.

B.Because it looks friendly but has hidden harmful intentions.
C.Because it is strong and brave.
D.Because it is only symbolic and not real.
2.Why is the “paper tiger” considered a false threat according to the passage?
A.Because it is a dangerous decoration.
B.Because it is a symbol of peace and harmony.
C.Because it is associated with zodiac animals.
D.Because it represents something that appears powerful but is actually weak.
3.What does the passage suggest about the relationship between traditional Chinese folk art and language?
A.Folk art is rarely reflected in everyday language.
B.Folk art only influences language during festivals.
C.The passage suggests no connection between folk art and language.
D.Terms from folk art like “paper tiger” can become part of the common language.
4.What are paper models often made of in traditional Chinese art?
A.Wood and paint. B.Clay and stone.

“Colour” and “color”, “favourite” and “favorite” ... Have you ever wondered why Americans spell those words without a “u”? Is it because they are lazy?
Of course not. In fact, the difference in spelling was started by a teacher named Noah Webster. He changed English to make American identity (特征) stronger.
After the Revolutionary War (独立战争), Webster believed that Americans should have their own dictionary and that they shouldn’t rely on British ones. He took away the British “u” in some words. And he changed “centre” into “center” for children to learn English by spelling words more like they sounded. He used “subway” instead of (代替) British word “underground”. Some other words are “soccer” and “football”, “fall” and “autumn”.
Webster spent 28 years finishing the 70,000-word dictionary with his American-style spellings in 1828. He also brought in local words. Most American schools use his dictionary. People believe it helped a new country get unity (统一) and cultural independence (文化独立) .
“He was the maker of our language and the maker of American identity,” said Joshua Kendall, who is writing a book about Webster. “He at last brought us together through our language.”

3.What does the underlined phrase “rely on” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.改革 B.依赖 C.容忍 D.放弃

1.According to the passage, why might “a smiling tiger” be considered more dangerous than “a paper tiger”?
A.Because it appears weak but is actually powerful.
C.Bamboo sticks and paper. D.Metal and glass.
5.How does making paper models relate to the concept of “a paper tiger”?
A.Both represent something that seems real or strong but is actually fragile.
B.Both are used to celebrate the Lantern Festival.
C.Both involve creating strong and durable objects.
D.Both are used as offerings to the dead at funerals.
6.According to the passage, which of the following statements is correct?
A.Don’t worry; he’s just a paper tiger.

A learning style is a way of learning. Your preferred learning style is the way in which you learn best. Three styles of learning are often found among students.

Auditory learners learn best by listening. Does listening to audio tapes help you learn better? Do you find yourself reading aloud or talking things out to get a better understanding? If YES, you are probably an Auditory Learner.
Type 2: The Tactile (触觉) Learning Style
Tactile learners learn best in hands-on learning settings (环境). Do you learn best when you can move about and handle things? Do you do well in classes in which there is a lab part? Do you learn better when you have a real object in your hands rather than a picture of it? If YES, you are probably a Tactile Learner.
Type 3: The Visual (视觉) Learning Style
Visual learners learn best when information is shown in written language, pictures or maps. Do you do best in classes in which teachers do a lot of writing on the blackboard? Do you try to remember information by creating pictures in your mind? Do you take notes from your textbooks in class? If YES, you are probably a Visual Learner.
