Usually high school students only have a two-day weekend to travel. How can you make it relaxing and fun? This article offers some simple tips to help you enjoy your break.
Choosing the Right Destination
Choose a suitable destination that is not too far from your home so you don’t spend most of your time on buses, trains, or planes. You might visit a nearby city or explore a new area in your own town. The most important thing is to spend your time enjoying the place, not just traveling to it.
Planning but Staying Open
Make a simple plan before you go. Check the opening hours of the sights you really want to see, and book your hotel in advance. If there is a popular restaurant you want to try, you can make a reservation. At the same time, don’t fill every minute. Leave some free time in your schedule for surprise discoveries.
Experiencing Local Life
Try to experience local life instead of only visiting famous sights. Talk to people who live there and ask them where they like to eat or relax. They often know small shops or parks that are not in guidebooks. A slow walk through a local street or an hour in a café can easily become your favorite memory of the trip.
In the end, remember that the purpose of a weekend break is to rest and enjoy yourself. Get up a little earlier, put away your phone, and notice what you see and hear. Even a short trip can give you new energy and a fresh view of the world.
1. What should you do before the trip?
A. Talk with locals. B. Visit small shops.
C. Book the rooms. D. Walk along streets.

On a sunny autumn day, teenagers and their parents were busy picking corn (玉米) and digging sweet potatoes on a piece of farmland in Tianjin. “We ate the corn we grew ourselves. It’s very tasty,” said Yunyao — an autistic (孤独) youth, smiling shyly.
Hui’ai Farm, whose name means collecting love, lies in southwest Tianjin and was founded by eight families with autistic children. Yunyao’s father, Zhu Xijun, is one of the founders of the farm. “I don’t expect the farm to make money. The children are past school age, so they need something to do,” he explained.
Guan Xiaoyan, another founder (创办人) of the farm, noticed that, after her son stayed home following junior high graduation, the life skills and behavioral abilities he had worked hard to learn had begun to weaken. Now, the boy has begun opening up through his work on the farm. He has learned teamwork and built healthy habits, and is more willing to play with others.
Autistic children often struggle with social skills, repetitive behaviors, and emotional challenges. Through farm work, the youths interact with friends and family using language, actions and emotions. This process keeps them happy while improving their life skills.
This year, Hui’ai Farm produced over 500 kg of corn and more than 15,000 kg of sweet potatoes, which has brought great enjoyment to the autistic youths, as they have seen the fruits of their own farm work.
“We hope to develop (研发) some high-value-added farm products (高附加值的农产品) here in the future. This will allow the youths to promote their skills while also improving the farm’s self-continuity (自我可持续性), in turn, helping more people with mental challenges,” Zhu said.
4. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. Farm’s site and condition. B. Teenagers’ farm experience.
C. The parent-child relationship. D. The taste of self-planted food.
5. What happened to Guan Xiaoyan’s son after he stayed home?
A. His skills and abilities got worse. B. He attended the school graduation.
C. He played with friends more often. D. He worked hard to learn knowledge.
6. What does the underlined word “interact” mean in paragraph 4?
A Debate. B. Exercise. C. Celebrate. D. Connect.
7. What is the final goal of planting high-value-added products?
A. To make more profits. B. To teach advanced skills.
C. To aid people in need. D. To develop new products.

Changing animal poo (粪便) into future babies might sound like magic, but scientists think it could become a new way to help endangered animals. A project in the UK called the “Poo Zoo” is testing whether cells (细胞) in animal waste can be used as tools for preservation.
Animal poo is not only full of bacteria (细菌) but also has tiny (微小的) cells from inside the animal’s body. If the poo is fresh enough, some of these cells are still alive. Researchers have already found living cells in droppings from mice and other animals.
These living cells could be used for wildlife rescue. Scientists can take DNA from the cells to study the variety of wild populations and choose which animals can have babies together as parents. In the future, the same cells might even be used to produce baby animals in the lab. One possible method is cloning (克隆), in which the key part of a living cell is put into an empty egg cell and then grows inside another female.
A more creative idea is to reprogram (从新编程) these living cells into many types of cells, including sex cells. In mice, scientists have already shown that such cells can be turned into sex cells. If this works for endangered animals, scientists could use lab-made sex cells to help them have babies without catching them or taking sex cells directly from their bodies.
The “Poo Zoo” method also has practical advantages. Getting living cells from the blood, skin or hair of endangered animals can be dangerous and expensive, but collecting poo is safe and does not hurt the animals.30 These cells can be kept in bio-banks for years. A wildlife protection organization has successfully cloned an extinct species using preserved cells. However, many experts warn that the “Poo Zoo” method alone cannot save wildlife. They point out that protecting habitats and fighting illegal hunting are still the most important tasks. New tools like those used in the “Poo Zoo” should support rather than replace traditional preservation work.
8. Why can animal waste be used for animal protection?
A. Because it has living cells. B. Because it is fresh enough.
C. Because it has magic power. D. Because it is rich in bacteria.
9. Why does the author mention mice in paragraph 4?
A. To compare different species. B. To make a sound (合理的)suggestion.
C. To show an unexpected result. D. To give a successful example.
10. Which of the following words can best describe the “Poo Zoo” way?
A. Cheap and productive. B. Creative and expensive.
C. Harmless and effective. D. Practical and traditional.
11. What is the experts’ attitude to the “Poo Zoo” method?
A. Hopeful. B. Objective. C. Unclear. D. Worried.

Based on a three-year-long study on millions of phones in ninety-eight countries, researchers found the global network of Android smartphones makes a useful earthquake early warning system (地震预警系统哪), which can detect (探测) earthquakes and give users valuable seconds to act before the shaking starts.
Many countries have used traditional earthquake early warning systems with networks of earthquakes sensors to detect quakes and issue warnings across the affected area. Building such networks is expensive, and many areas where earthquakes are common do not have them. What they do have, however, is smartphones, which have built-in movement sensors. Using Android smartphones — which make up 70% of the global smartphone market — researchers developed the Android Earthquake Alert (AEA) system. “Although AEA is not always as timely as the traditional network detection, it can still detect small shaking during strong earthquakes,” says Allen, the leader of the study.
Working on the same way as traditional earthquake detection systems, AEA system will send two types of warnings to the phone after detecting an earthquake. For earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or higher, the system sends “Take Action” warnings to users. These warnings are designed to draw users’ attention immediately and remind them to take protective actions. It also delivers “Be Aware” warnings to areas expected to experience a shaking of magnitude 3 or 4.
To test how effective these warnings were, the researchers used search engines to collect voluntary answers. Results from around 15.5 million people showed that 87% of them did experience shaking, with 36% receiving the warning before the ground began to move, 28% during and 23% after.
Now, the researchers are focused on improving the AEA system. “We think that we can continue to improve the quality of earthquake detection, and also improve on our strategies to deliver effective warnings,” says Allen. In the future, Allen and his teammates hope to use the same information to produce other disaster-reducing tools. Maps of ground shaking, for example, could help the emergency rescue after an earthquake.
12. What is AEA’s advantage over the traditional way?
A. It has smarter sensors. B. It requires less funding.
C. It sends earlier warnings. D. It detects smaller quakes.
13. What decides the type of warnings?
A. Result of the earthquake. B. Site of the earthquake.
C. Magnitude of the earthquake. D. Reason of the earthquake.
14. What do Allen’s words mean in paragraph 5?
A Technological advances prevent disasters.
B. Researches on earthquakes are in demand.
C. Quality of rescue tools requires improvement.
D. The warning system needs further development.
15. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce a warning system. B. To compare two types of alerts.
C. To raise public safety awareness. D. To promote a disaster rescue tool.

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables-my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.

根据第一段“On a sunny autumn day, teenagers and their parents were busy picking corn (玉米) and digging sweet potatoes on a piece of farmland in Tianjin. “We ate the corn we grew ourselves. It’s very tasty,” said Yunyao — an autistic (孤独) youth, smiling shyly.(秋日艳阳下,天津一片农田里,少年们和父母正忙着摘玉米、挖红薯。患有孤独症的少年云瑶腼腆地笑着说:“我们吃了自己种的玉米,特别香甜。”)”可知,这段主要内容是青少年做农活的经历。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Guan Xiaoyan, another founder (创办人) of the farm, noticed that, after her son stayed home following junior high graduation, the life skills and behavioral abilities he had worked hard to learn had begun to weaken.(关晓燕是这家农场的另一位创始人,她注意到,自己儿子初中毕业后留在家里之后,他一直以来努力学习的实用技能和行为能力开始逐渐退化)”可知,关女士的儿子毕业后待在家,之前努力学到的生活技能和行为能力都开始退化了,故选A。
根据第四段“Autistic children often struggle with social skills, repetitive behaviors, and emotional challenges.(自闭症儿童往往社交技能不足、重复性行为、而且无法进行情绪管理)”以及划线词后文“with friends and family using language, actions and emotions(借助语言、动作和情感与朋友及家人进行)”可知,自闭孩子社交有困难,行为重复,情绪调节困难。

A. Hopeful. B. Objective. C. Unclear. D. Worried.
A 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据第二段“Animal poo is not only full of bacteria (细菌) but also has tiny cells from inside the animal’s body. If the poo is fresh enough, some of these cells are still alive.(动物粪便不仅富含细菌,还含有动物体内的微小细胞。如果粪便足够新鲜,其中的一些细胞仍处于活性状态)”可知,动物粪便里可能含有仍然存活的细胞,因此能用于保护研究与遗传拯救。故选A项。
根据第四段“A more creative idea is to reprogram these living cells into many types of cells, including sex cells. In mice, scientists have already shown that such cells can be turned into sex cells.(一个更具创意的想法是将这些活细胞重新编程为多种类型的细胞,包括生殖细胞。在老鼠身上,科学家已经证明这种细胞可以转化为生殖细胞)”可知,作者提到老鼠应该是为了说明“细胞可被重编程并转化为性细胞”这一想法已有实验成功案例,从而增强观点可信度。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Getting living cells from the blood, skin or hair of rare animals can be dangerous and expensive, but collecting poo is safe and does not hurt the animals. These cells can be kept in bio-banks for years. A wildlife protection organization has successfully cloned an extinct species using preserved cells.(从稀有动物的血液、皮肤或毛发中获取活细胞可能既危险又昂贵,但收集粪便则既安全又不会伤害动物。这些细胞可以保存在生物库中长达数年。一家野生动物保护组织已经成功地利用保存的细胞克隆出了一个灭绝物种)”可知,从动物粪便提取细胞安全无害,并且可以成功,即无害且有效。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“However, many experts warn that the “Poo Zoo” method alone cannot save wildlife. They point out that protecting habitats and fighting illegal hunting are still the most important tasks. New tools like those used in the “Poo Zoo” should support rather than replace traditional preservation work.(然而,许多专家警告说,“粪便动物园”方法本身并不能拯救野生动物。他们指出,保护栖息地和打击非法捕猎仍然是最重要的任务。像“粪便动物园”中使用的这些新工具应该支持而非取代传统的保护工作)”可知,专家们既肯定其有效性,又强调不能替代传统保护、仍需栖息地保护和反偷猎,态度是客观理性的。故选B项。

A. Technological advances prevent disasters.
B 13. C 14. D 15. A

Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re ready to get moving! After comparing the two plans, I’d personally go with plan B.
Here are the reasons. Firstly, team sports like basketball can help you make friends and develop team spirit, which is more interesting than running alone. Besides, with much homework on weekdays, morning running makes you tired in class, while weekend sports can fully relax you. Finally, you can improve your skills by learning from your teammates who are better at the sport.
Hope these ideas come in handy. Either way, play it safe and enjoy yourself!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just at that moment, Luella’ family returned in their car. Empathy surged within me as I saw their shock and disbelief. Approaching Luella, I tightly held her hands and said, “I’m so sorry for your loss, but thankfully you’re all right.” She weakly nodded, still puzzled by the shocking scene. My family volunteered to help clean up the mess, cutting down the branches and removing the fallen trees. To lift Luella’s spirits and give her comfort, I tried my best to cheer her up while tidying the garden with her, during which my own joyful personality seemed to revive a bit.
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’ sorrow for her lost garden. My heart went out to her, knowing how much she had cherished those tulips that she had devoted so much energy to. Determined to restore the beauty of the garden, I suggested we rebuild the garden, which Luella delightedly agreed. Carefully planted and watered, the new tulip seedlings once again filled the garden, which symbolized the beginning of our friendship, as well as the turning that I finally got embraced by this new environment. My mom was right: it’s more blessed to give than to receive because when you give, you may receive something unexpected in return.
