Kids Connect is a camp specifically for children with physical and mild intellectual disabilities aged 9—16 (Individual consideration given to those over the age of 16). Acceptance is not automatic, but at the discretion (自行决定权) of the camp director.
Our camps are conducted by experienced staff. We take every effort to give your children a safe and enjoyable weekend. Our aim is that every child comes away with lasting memories of what they have experienced explored and enjoyed at our camp.
We focus on building strong, healthy relationships with other children (with and without physical disabilities) and with group leaders.
We have a weekend packed full of activities, action and fun.

I have repeatedly written about the perils of social media use in past posts. One of the problems with social media is that it takes time away from other important activities especially in our free time. With so much of our lives now online, perhaps it is not that surprising to hear that recent studies suggest reading is on the decline (下降) among Americans.
Studies over the past ten years show that only 16% of Americans report reading for pleasure. Researchers believe this decline in reading will hurt how people learn, their relationships, and their overall well-being.
In past posts, I’ve highlighted the benefits of reading for pleasure. Reading can make us more empathetic (同理心), improve our writing skills and focus. Nowadays, we’re overloaded by social media — scrolling (滚动) down the screen, trying to multitask, and feeling pressed to reply quickly to every message or notification.
Reading for pleasure is an activity that allows us to take a break from screens. It can help individuals maintain the skills that are slowly being lost because of social media. Fall is a great time to start reading. I recently finished reading All the Way to the River by Elizabeth Gilbert, which tells the story of her life after the success of Eat, Pray, Love.
As we approach a new season, it could be the right time to start a more productive practice than staying connected to our smartphones. Turn away from the screen, and consider turning toward a new adventure.
24. What does the underlined word “perils” in the first paragraph mean?
A. Dangers. B. Ranges. C. Shortcuts. D. Distances.
25 What do the researchers think of the decline in reading?
A. It will allow us to enjoy well-being. B. It will offer enriching experiences.
C. It will be a bad influence on people. D. It will improve social connections.
26. What is the author’s opinion about social media?
A. It is important for learning. B. It harms reading habits.
C. It is useful for multitasking. D. It should replace books.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To show the benefits of social media. B. To remember a well-known writer.
C. To give a brief account of technology. D. To encourage us to pick up a book.
C
Jim Fullan is often mistaken as a player’s dad. Sometimes people even think he’s a coach. But the 57-year-old man is actually just part of the team. His return to the baseball field has been a lifelong dream. Fullan retired (退休) last year to reach his goal of playing college baseball. “I never took the opportunity to play in college or continue to try,” he says. “It was always on my mind.”
Fullan applied to several Pennsylvania community colleges to get his degree and spoke to a couple of baseball coaches to learn about the programs. But they refused him. It wasn’t until he went to a few of the Montgomery County Community College Mustangs’ games last spring that he felt he found support. He introduced himself to the coaches and they accepted the idea of him becoming a special student and an athlete.
Fullan showed up for the tryout (选拔赛) last fall. The tryout made him anxious, particularly because he didn’t know how he was going to be received by his much younger teammates. There is truly a big age gap (差距). But he immediately caught the attention of the young who admired his determination. With 25 players trying out, only 18 made the team. That total included Fullan.
When not attending class, Fullan is putting in work on the field. He’s not using age as an excuse. He attends all of the daily three-hour practices from Monday to Friday. Fullan says it is a daily challenge to keep up with his younger teammates so he has to get to practice early before they arrive. Actually, Fullan is able to share his wealth of knowledge from his life experience with his teammates. This enables him to develop good relationships with the team.
His story has been an inspiration to many away from the baseball field, including Kelly Dunbar, director of athletics at Montgomery County Community College. “I admire his courage to keep his dream alive,” she says, “because many people don’t do that these days.”
28. What can be learned about Fullan from the first two paragraphs?
A. He hoped to re-experience college life.
B. He taught young players after retirement.
C. He tried to achieve a long-standing dream.
D. He surprised others with his athletic abilities.
29. What made Fullan worried during his tryout?
A. The difficulty of keeping focused. B. Serious competition among players.
C. Uncertainty about teammates’ attitudes. D. The thought of making simple mistakes.
30. How does Fullan benefit his teammates with his participation?
A. By sharing his life wisdom. B. By providing job opportunities.
C. By driving training plans. D. By offering baseball skills.
31. What message does the author mainly convey in the text?
A. There are challenges for older athletes. B. Opportunities lie in proper preparation.
C. Attention should be given to physical fitness. D. It’s never too late to follow your dreams.
D
Chickens can communicate with each other in many ways. They use body language such as showing off their feathers, but their less expressive faces might cause people not to notice their feelings, says backyard chicken expert Tove Danovich. “In fact, they are very expressive in other ways.” Primarily, they use their loud and unique voices.
Tove Danovich and her team wondered if humans were able to pick up on the basic information of chicken well-being from sound alone. They experimented with nearly 200 participants from around the world for an online survey. Each participant listened to 16 types of hen sounds, including fast clucks (咯咯声) and food calls that show excitement, as well as low calls that show negative emotions (情绪).
Researchers were surprised to find that 69 percent of all participants could tell if a chicken sounded excited or displeased, regardless of their earlier knowledge of chickens. It is worth mentioning that some participants had never been around chickens before. They also found that older participants were more likely to think the chicken sound was a happy one when it was actually sad.
“Honestly, it makes a lot of sense to me,” Danovich says. “We think of animals as being so different from humans, but we are just another species (物种).” Different species of birds are able to pick up on each other’s alarm calls, and other animals-including humans-can pick up on signs of danger or unhappiness in other species. “I think it’s really beneficial for animals to be able to pick up on alarm calls from the other living things around us,” she says. “And just because we think of ourselves as being very separate from the rest of the nonhuman world, it really doesn’t mean that we are.”
Researchers pointed out that another understanding of chicken well-being adds to the practice of friendlier animal farming. Danovich says that studies like this remind us that chickens are just like every other species around us. Staying connected to her own backyard chickens allows Danovich to pick up on an individual chicken’s excited and mad songs, making her a better caretaker.
32. How did the researchers test participants’ ability to understand chickens?
A. By watching how they behave with chickens.
B. By having them describe chickens’ body language.
C. By asking them to recognize different chicken voices.
D. By testing their knowledge of chicken communication.
33. What greatly influenced the participants’ judgments?
A. Familiarity with chickens. B. The number of chickens.
C. Personal emotions. D. Age differences.
34. What does Tove Danovich mainly want to express in paragraph 4?
A. Animals rely highly on sight to notice danger.
B. Animals have unique methods to express discomfort.
C. Humans can train animals to understand other species.
D. Humans share understandings of animal warning signs.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Explore human-chicken communication B. Connect chicken sounds with their feelings
C. Improve methods of training farm animals D. Keep the natural balance of the animal world.

【原文】W: So, Jason, I have a few questions for you.
M: Go ahead.
W: Could you explain why you believe you’re a good fit for our team?
M: Certainly. One of my strengths is building long-term customer relationships. For example, when I headed the customer support department at my previous company, our team resolved about three quarters of our customer issues. I decided we needed better information and technical preparation on our products. So after I conducted a few training exercises with our technical department, we were able to do much better. Given the opportunity, I’m confident I can copy this success here.
W: Amazing! What would you say is your weakness?
M: Honestly, my main challenge has been time management. I find it hard to organize my time. However, I have recently attended a workshop on time management and efficiency, which has helped me overcome this issue.

【原文】W: Dear Amy,
How are you? I want to share something about my day at high school here in China.
Every morning, I wake up at 6:30 and after a quick breakfast, I take the bus to school. Classes start at 8:00 o’clock. We have a short break in the morning where I catch up with my friends.
In the afternoon, we have more classes like history, geography, and science. School ends at 5:00 pm, but I often stay for extra-curricular activities. I joined the art club and the basketball team. These activities have helped me make new friends and feel more connected to the school community.
The workload in high school is heavier than in middle school, and I am still getting used to the longer hours. However, my teachers and classmates are very supportive, which makes the transition easier.
I miss you a lot and hope we can meet during the holidays. I can’t wait to tell you more about my school life in person. Take care and write back soon!
Best wishes,
Liu Xin

I have repeatedly written about the perils of social media use in past posts. One of the problems with social media is that it takes time away from other important activities, especially in our free time.
A. Dangers. B. Ranges. C. Shortcuts. D. Distances.
25. What do the researchers think of the decline in reading?
【答案】24. A 25. C 26. B 27. D

Jim Fullan is often mistaken as a player’s dad. Sometimes people even think he’s a coach. But the 57-year-old man is actually just part of the team. His return to the baseball field has been a lifelong dream. Fullan retired (退休) last year to reach his goal of playing college baseball. “I never took the opportunity to play in college or continue to try” he says.
