He would ask a thoughtful question or make a sharp comment. As a result, I assumed that he knew something about everything. How could this be? He was certainly an educated man. He was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a neighborhood that was, at the time, simply poor. When a friend applied to a New York high school, he followed suit and was admitted. He went on to earn an undergraduate degree and then, after serving in World War II, earned a Ph.D. in chemistry. It’s an impressive path, but his education had been focused on the sciences; how was it that he knew so much about other things-Stickley furniture and the Battle of Waterloo, for example? I recently put the question to him. He explained that, as a teenager, he had made a promise to himself to ask a question in any gathering he attended. The exercise had sharpened his ability to listen, speak, and engage with whatever was happening. But his initial motivation, as my father readily admits, was simply to participate in the conversation. He came from a poor background and, though very intelligent, lacked the polish of the more privileged people with whom he came into contact. Asking a question was his way of finding his voice, often in settings where he felt uneasy, and also a way of fitting in. In speaking up, he received acknowledgement, which led to greater confidence, which led to greater participation, and in the end, to greater knowledge. Ever since my father’s method caught my attention, I have urged my shyer students to follow his example. I tell them to try to speak at least once during a class, if only to ask a question. Doing so helps them acquire a profile in class and involve themselves more deeply. In time, they will contribute to the conversation. And eventually, they may be able to amaze their children with their wide-ranging knowledge. 4. Why does the author mention her father’s educational path? A. To highlight his academic achievements. B. To explain why he was interested in science. C. To contrast his science education with his broad knowledge. D. To suggest how science contributed to his view on social issues. 5. What’s the father’s initial purpose of asking questions at gatherings? A. To make himself heard. B. To follow his friend’s example. C. To improve his communicative skills. D. To impress others with his intelligence. 6. What does the author expect her students to get from the method? A. A wider range of interests. B. Deeper engagement in learning. C. Greater confidence in public speaking. D. More recognition from their classmates. 7. What message does the author convey through the text? A. One simple habit fuels lasting growth. B. Success relies on seizing every chance. C. A good teacher learns from students as well. D. Childhood experiences decide future careers. C Want to lose fat? There’s one method scientifically proven to work: eating a little less food than your body needs to fuel itself each day. Do that, and your body starts using its energy reserves — its stored fat — to make up the deficit. It sounds straightforward. You dutifully keep track of the calories in every meal to make sure your daily intake stays less than your fixed limit, but the number on your weight scale never changes at all. It’s frustrating and disheartening. But there’s good news: you’re not to blame. Recent scientific findings suggest it’s almost impossible to count calories with any degree of accuracy, which explains why trying to lose weight by calorie counting is so hard. It’s not bad maths that trips most of us up, though. Generally, unless you diligently log every ingredient before you eat, humans just aren’t very good at recalling exactly what was on their plate, let alone the handful of snacks they ate without thinking. Given all that, it’s no surprise that studies suggest the average person underestimates their daily consumption by around 30 per cent (roughly 600-750 calories), or about 10 digestive biscuits. The very idea of working out calorie amounts is problematic. And that’s before we even consider the effect your individual biology can have. For instance, a 2023 study tested the outcomes of giving people a high-fibre diet, designed to feed their gut microbes With growing microbial communities in their guts, the scientists found that the participants in the study lost a little bit of weight — without eating less or feeling hungry — because they were absorbing fewer calories from their food. “That means, depending on what you eat and how many microbes are thriving (旺盛繁殖) in your gut, some calories are used by you, while others feed the microbes.” says Professor Rosa Brown, a co-author of the study. If all this is starting to make you think that calorie monitoring might be off the menu, you’d be right. 8. What does the underlined word “deficit” in paragraph 1 mean? A. Database. B. Shortfall. C. Nutrition. D. Weight. 9. What makes it hard for dieters to count calories? A. Inaccuracy of intake records. B. Lack of tracking approaches. C. Absence of scientific evidence. D. Complexity of calculation procedures. 10. What can we learn from the 2023 study? A. Calorie absorption may vary. B. Eating less means losing weight. C. Fibre reduces people’s hunger. D. Food calories determine body weight. 11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Forget the Strict Diet B. Simplify Your Calorie Log C. Skip the Dietary Math D. Adjust Your Diet Structure D Food markets have experienced considerable instability in recent years. Global warming is causing droughts, soil desertification and extreme weather. Yet the fundamentals of food production were last transformed in the mid-20th century. Fortunately, global investments in agricultural innovation are on the rise. Funds for agritech companies reached $16.2 billion in 2025. Of this, $9 billion went to new research into boosting farm yields, up from $2.5 billion in 2016. The focus of sustainability efforts is switching from preventing climate change to dealing with it and finding solutions. Scientists are developing alternatives to the pesticides and fertilisers that have dominated modern agriculture since the Green Revolution of the mid-20th century, based on a better understanding of plants themselves. B-COS, a team from Ghent University, is genetically engineering bacteria to produce a special kind of molecule (分子). Tomato and potato plants sprayed (喷洒) with the molecules are tricked into believing they are under attack and activate their natural defenses against infection. B-COS is applying this approach to two new products: one to improve growth and drought tolerance, and another which it claims can reduce disease incidence by 40-50%. Naturally, there are also companies exploring the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. The general idea of this combination is called “precision agriculture”, which is to help farmers connect everything from the environmental conditions of individual fields to the genetic sequences (序列) of the bacteria present in the soil, and those of the plants themselves. This is then run through AI models that make predictions about the best conditions and treatments to achieve the highest yields or produce the highest-quality crops. “It is going to show us what’s going on in each square metre of the fields, such as temperature, water and carbon absorption,” says Mr. Anders, a managing partner of an agritech company. There is still a long way to go. In 2024, agricultural tech companies attracted just 1.3% of global early-stage venture-capital funding despite agriculture accounting for about 4% of global GDP. But if high-tech innovations still make their way, and the funds keep flowing, a new age of precision agriculture is coming. 12. What is highlighted concerning agricultural investment in paragraph 1? A. Its instability. B. Its source. C. Its influence. D. Its shift. 13. Why did the B-COS team spray the molecules on tomato and potato plants? A. To evaluate disease tolerance. B. To eliminate harmful substances. C. To boost natural resistance. D. To protect healthy plants. 14. What does “precision agriculture” contribute to? A. Accurate market forecasting. B. Efficient harvesting techniques. C. Sufficient genetic information. D. Reasonable agricultural planning. 15. What is the author’s purpose in presenting the data in the last paragraph? A. To call for greater investment. B. To warn of potential risks. C. To cast light on the achievements. D. To give credit to the companies. Picture your dream living room. You’ re sitting on the sofa with the window open. Because I had worked as a doctor for years, I knew at once that something was seriously wrong. My heart began to race, and fear quickly filled my mind. I realized I was having a heart attack halfway down the mountain, where no ambulance could easily reach me. Fighting against the growing pain, I carefully rode my bike to the bottom of the track. Every second felt like forever, but I knew stopping was not an option. By the time I reached the car park, my chest felt as if something were pressing against it. I grabbed my phone from the car and called an ambulance, trying to keep my voice calm as I told the operator exactly where I was. Soon I became too weak to stand. Afraid that the ambulance workers might not be able to find me, I lay down beside my car. My vision gradually became blurry (模糊的), and I felt weaker with every passing minute. As more cyclists disappeared into the distance without noticing me, I began to wonder whether help would come in time. Just as I was beginning to lose hope, someone stopped nearby and asked whether I was all right. I managed to whisper that I thought I was having a heart attack and that an ambulance was on its way. The stranger immediately stayed by my side, speaking to me calmly and reassuring me that help would arrive soon. He told me he was Leo, a regular rider on this trail. While waiting for the ambulance, I was extremely worried about what would happen to my mountain bike. After all, mountain bikes weren’t cheap. Leo noticed my anxious look fixed on the bike. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After I recovered days later, I called the number to get my bike back. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 绝密★启用前 适用类型:A 2024级高三上学期第二次阶段性诊断测评 英语试题 2026.10 注意事项: 1. 1. Whatever the occasion, my father always had something to say. C 5. A 6. B 7. 根据第二段中“He was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a neighborhood that was, at the time, simply poor. When a friend applied to a New York high school, he followed suit and was admitted. He went on to earn an undergraduate degree and then, after serving in World War II, earned a Ph.D. in chemistry. It’s an impressive path, but his education had been focused on the sciences; how was it that he knew so much about other things-Stickley furniture and the Battle of Waterloo, for example?(他出生在布鲁克林的威廉斯堡,当时那一带还十分贫困。当一位朋友申请纽约的一所高中时,他也跟着申请并被录取。之后,他获得了学士学位,二战结束后又取得了化学博士学位。 这是一条令人钦佩的学术之路,但他的教育主要集中在科学领域;那么,他怎么会知道其他方面的事情呢?比如斯蒂克利家具、滑铁卢战役等等?)”可推知,作者提到她父亲的求学经历是为了将单一的理科教育背景与广博的知识面形成对比。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“But his initial motivation, as my father readily admits, was simply to participate in the conversation. He came from a poor background and, though very intelligent, lacked the polish of the more privileged people with whom he came into contact. Asking a question was his way of finding his voice, often in settings where he felt uneasy, and also a way of fitting in.(但正如我父亲坦率承认的那样,他最初参与讨论的动机,仅仅是为了融入对话之中。他出身贫寒,虽然非常聪明,却缺乏与他接触的那些出身优渥之人的那种从容与优雅。提问成了他表达自我的方式,常常是在让他感到不自在的场合中,也是一条融入集体的途径。)”可推知,父亲最初在聚会上提问的动机很单纯——参与对话、在场合中找到自己的话语权,让自己被听见,从而融入环境。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“Doing so helps them acquire a profile in class and involve themselves more deeply. In time, they will contribute to the conversation.(这样做有助于他们在课堂上树立形象,更加深入地参与其中。随着时间推移,他们会逐渐参与到讨论中来。)”可知,作者鼓励害羞的学生效仿父亲,课堂上至少开口提一次问题,核心目的是让学生更深入地参与到课堂学习中,从被动倾听转向主动表达、参与对话。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章大意以及最后一段中“Doing so helps them acquire a profile in class and involve themselves more deeply. In time, they will contribute to the conversation. And eventually, they may be able to amaze their children with their wide-ranging knowledge.(这样做有助于他们在课堂上树立形象,更加深入地参与其中。随着时间推移,他们会逐渐参与到讨论中来。最终,或许还能用自己广博的知识让孩子们大吃一惊。)”可知,全文围绕 “主动提问”这一个简单习惯展开:父亲靠提问的习惯从窘迫融入到收获自信、积累广博知识;作者将这个方法教给学生,帮助他们深度参与学习、持续成长。由此可知,作者通过文章传达了一个微小的习惯可以驱动长期的成长与进步。 C Want to lose fat? Adjust Your Diet Structure 【答案】8. B 9. A 10. A 11. 根据第一段“eating a little less food than your body needs to fuel itself each day. Do that, and your body starts using its energy reserves — its stored fat — to make up the … (每天摄入比身体所需略少的食物。这样做,你的身体就会开始使用其能量储备——储存的脂肪——来弥补……。)”可知,前文提到了(每天摄入比身体所需略少的食物,还提到了你的身体就会开始使用其能量储备,可推理出划线词的含义为“不足”,与B项“Shortfall(不足,短缺)”意思相近。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Recent scientific findings suggest it’s almost impossible to count calories with any degree of accuracy, which explains why trying to lose weight by calorie counting is so hard. It’s not bad maths that trips most of us up, though. Generally, unless you diligently log every ingredient before you eat, humans just aren’t very good at recalling exactly what was on their plate, let alone the handful of snacks they ate without thinking. (近期的科学研究表明,想要精准计算卡路里几乎是不可能的,这也解释了为什么靠计算卡路里减肥如此困难。不过,困扰大多数人的并不是计算失误。一般来说,除非你在进食前认真记录每一样食材,否则人们很难准确回忆起自己盘中究竟吃了什么,更不用说那些不知不觉吃下的少量零食。)”以及“studies suggest the average person underestimates their daily consumption by around 30 per cent (研究表明普通人每天低估约30%的摄入量)”可知,让节食者难以计算卡路里的原因是摄入记录的不准确。 根据第四段“With growing microbial communities in their guts, the scientists found that the participants in the study lost a little bit of weight — without eating less or feeling hungry — because they were absorbing fewer calories from their food. (随着肠道微生物群落的生长,研究人员发现参与者在没有少吃、也没有感到饥饿的情况下减了一点重,因为他们从食物中吸收的卡路里变少了。)”以及第五段“depending on what you eat and how many microbes are thriving in your gut, some calories are used by you, while others feed the microbes. (取决于你吃什么以及肠道中有多少微生物在旺盛繁殖,有些卡路里被你吸收,有些则喂养了微生物。)”可知,卡路里的吸收因人而异(受肠道菌群影响)。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段“It sounds straightforward. You dutifully keep track of the calories in every meal to make sure your daily intake stays less than your fixed limit, but the number on your weight scale never changes at all. It’s frustrating and disheartening. But there’s good news: you’re not to blame. (这听起来简单明了。你认真记录每一餐的卡路里,确保每日摄入量低于设定的上限,可是体重秤上的数字却丝毫不变。这让人倍感沮丧、灰心丧气。不过有个好消息:这并不是你的问题。)”以及最后一段“If all this is starting to make you think that calorie monitoring might be off the menu, you’d be right. (如果这一切让你觉得卡路里监测可能行不通,你是对的。)”可知,本文说的是通过卡路里赤字减肥法却不见效的挫败感,原因是人类回忆饮食不准确,并通过研究证明卡路里吸收受生物学因素影响,末段劝读者别再纠结于卡路里的数字计算,C项“Skip the Dietary Math (跳过饮食数学计算)”最契合主旨。 D Food markets have experienced considerable instability in recent years. 12. D 13. C 14. D 15. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Leo noticed my anxious look fixed on the bike. He quickly understood my worry and patted my shoulder gently, saying, “Don’t worry about it. I’ll take care of your bike.” With that, he carefully picked up the bike and secured it to his own. He also took out a piece of paper, scribbled down his phone number, and pressed it into my trembling hand, promising to keep it safe until I was back on my feet. His calm and considerate words, which came at the most critical moment, instantly eased my anxiety. After I recovered days later, I called the number to get my bike back. Leo arrived soon, returning the bike in perfect condition. He also checked how I was feeling, showing his sincere concern. Grateful for his timely help and kindness, which had pulled me back from the edge of despair, I insisted on treating him to lunch. During the meal, we shared our riding stories and became close friends. That accident, instead, brought me a precious friendship that I would cherish forever. 词汇激活 行为类 ①照看:take care of/safeguard/look after ②坚持:insist on/stick to 情绪类 ①感激的:grateful/appreciative ②体贴的:considerate/thoughtful 【点睛】[高分句型1].
