I used to teach English as a volunteer in Africa. Some of my friends asked me, “Don’t you miss your home, Emily?” I told them I was the only child in my family and I truly had an easy life at home. However, I got bored of having a “good” time at home and needed a change.
The kids from Africa were eager (渴望的) to learn and easy to teach. I was surprised at how smart they were. Talking with them made me think a lot. When you come from a poor area, you must grow up fast and deal with all kinds of difficult situations.
Volunteering has always been easy for me because I don’t like to do the same things every day. My job also gives me the freedom to choose when and where I work. Although I don’t get paid for volunteering, I’m old enough to know that money is not the only way to get rewarded (回报). The experience itself is priceless. I make lots of connections with good people. Also, when I volunteer, I often work with people who are worse off than I am. That has taught me to practice thankfulness for what I have. Believe me, this life lesson is worth a million dollars.
I am not a perfect person. In a sense, I think I’m selfish (自私的). But you don’t have to be a perfect, selfless person to volunteer. In fact, I have benefited (受益) a lot from volunteering. Volunteering helps others, and it can also help yourself, too. The biggest benefit of volunteering is that it helps you develop your character (品质), and that’s the passport to a rich and meaningful life.
1.Why did Emily volunteer in Africa?
A.She lived a really difficult life at home.
B.She hoped to learn a new language there.

3.What does Emily get from her volunteering experience?
A.The freedom to choose a well-paid job.
B.The chance to connect with good people a lot.
C.The ability to express thanks for what she has lost.
4.Which of the following would Emily most probably agree with?
A.Use it or lose it. B.Old habits die hard. C.Giving is receiving.
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.B 4.C

Zhang Ying has studied broadcasting (广播) for four years at university. However, instead of becoming a news host on TV, she decided to use her knowledge to help millions of children with speech problems. She and her friend started Voice Changer, which offers speech therapy (治疗) for teenagers in China through in-person and online courses.
According to Zhang, each child needs to finish at least a three-month course. How many classes a child needs to have will depend on how well the child does.
“When we are teaching in-person courses, parents are not allowed to be with their children. The children may feel a bit nervous in a strange environment, but they soon get used to it and start having fun during the training,” Zhang says.
They also created an online program for families of children with speech problems. Parents can upload (上传) their children’s information to the testing tool and get a report. As well as online speech therapy, there are also online courses for parents to help their children with speech therapy at home.
“It’s important for parents to be with their children during online classes, because they need to be both helpers and classmates,” Zhang says.

“Grandma”, a tiny game under just five minutes, unexpectedly became popular. Its 32-year-old creator Zhou Yichen was the most surprised. Unlike modern games, it has no voice acting (配音), complex plots (复杂情节) or exciting action. Players only need to care for a grandma who has fallen and got hurt.
Players use the arrow keys(箭头键) to move around her house and simply answer “yes or no” questions: Will you sit with Grandma at the dinner table? Do you want to let her rest in bed? Each “yes” leads to a short, silent scene: Grandma slowly walking to the table or smiling in fresh air. And that’s it. No levels, no achievements. It’s just about taking care of Grandma over and over. But everyone who played it believed: “That’s why it is so touching.”
For Zhou, this game is a personal way to remember his grandma. In spring 2024, his 95-year-old grandma fell at home. She lived through it, but never fully recovered. Zhou took care of her, feeling helpless as her health got worse. He then decided to “keep” her in pixels (像素).
For a long time, the game was unfinished. Zhou designed the main plot but didn’t know how it should end. In September 2024, he dreamed of a bird carrying his grandma away. Weeks later, she passed away. Not long after that, he finished the ending: after putting Grandma to bed, the character dreams of that bird. When he wakes up, she is gone. Only the road outside the house remains, leading far away, with him walking alone.
“The game doesn’t keep her alive,” Zhou said quietly, “but it can hold memories.”

I come from a poor village where there is no university. After completing grade ten, my father gave me bad news. He said, “Son, I’m sorry. I won’t be able to pay for your tuition (学费) anymore.”
That night, I didn’t know what to do. Suddenly, my teacher’s words came to me, “Nawaz, don’t give up. Go to Karachi. It’s a city of opportunity for the poor.”
It was the first time I had left my village. The crowds and the traffic overwhelm me (使不知所措) me. For over a month, I couldn’t sleep. Soon after, I got a job in a small restaurant. I started working at night and studying during the day. Tired as I was, I decided to complete my education.
One day, a man came in for tea. He looked at me strangely and asked me many questions. My cousin had warned me that some people especially cheated country people who worked in the city. I wanted to leave, but since he was a customer, I politely answered his questions.
“Well, I see,” said the man, nodding. “Finish your work and come back to me.”
I told my manager about it. He seemed to know the man, so he advised me to talk to him.
When I sat down, he spoke directly, “I’d like to pay for all your education.”
I was pleasantly surprised, but I still had many questions.

The world is sad to say goodbye to Dr. Jane Goodall, a famous animal expert and environmental (环境的) protector. She passed away at the age of 91 on October 1, 2025, in California, the US, while on a speaking tour. She changed how we see chimpanzees (黑猩猩) and our understanding of the duty to protect nature.
Goodall was born in London, England, in 1934. As a little girl, she loved animals deeply and often watched birds and small insects in her garden. This hobby later became her life-long work. At 26, she went to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to study chimpanzees, though she had no professional university training in science then. The study lasted for over 60 years.
Goodall made amazing discoveries in Gombe. She was the first to see chimpanzees use tools—like using sticks to get food to eat. Before that, people thought only humans could use tools. This finding changed the study of chimpanzees. She also found chimpanzees live in groups with close relationships, have strong family connections, and have feelings just like humans.
Besides, Goodall was a leader in protecting the environment. She set up an institute (机构) in 1977 to teach people about environmental protection, encouraging lots of young people to help the earth. She faced difficulties like chimpanzee homes being destroyed (破坏) by tree-cutting and hunting, but she never gave up. Her great work made her a UN Messenger (使者) of Peace.
Goodall was not only a scientist but also a friend to chimpanzees. Her life teaches us courage and interest matter more than being smart or getting good grades. All we need is a love for something and the courage to realize it. Though she is no longer with us, her work and words will live on.
1.What can we know about Dr. Jane Goodall from the first two paragraphs?
A.Dr. Jane Goodall died at the age of 91 in Tanzania during a vacation.
B.Dr. Jane Goodall had got professional science training before her chimpanzee study.
C.Dr. Jane Goodall began to study chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park at 26.
2.What can we infer (推断) about chimpanzees from the passage?
A.They may make new tools to get the food they need.
B.They may show no care when their family members get hurt.
C.They may share food with their family members in the group.
3.How does the writer show that Goodall is a great environmental protector?
A.By explaining how she started the environmental institute.
B.By comparing her with other famous environmental protectors.
C.By introducing what she did and the difficulties she experienced.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The life and work of Jane Goodall.
B.The ways to study and protect chimpanzees.
C.The importance of environmental protection.
【答案】1.C 2.C 3.C 4.A

C.She wanted to experience something new.
2.How were the African kids in Emily’s eyes in Paragraph 2?
A.Quite teachable. B.Hard to deal with. C.Bored of learning.

There are only about 10,000 speech therapists in China. Volunteering as a speech therapist is different from other kinds of volunteering, because it needs special training before services can be offered.
“Speech therapy is a special kind of help that needs knowledge in areas like education, psychology (心理学) and language,” Zhang says, adding that their team has also developed a training program for volunteers to grow into professional speech therapists.

A photo of a boy carrying his tennis rackets in a bamboo basket becomes popular online. The boy, Wang Fa, 14, is a member of the Va (佤族) from Yunnan. After he won the Under-14 boys’ singles title (十四岁男单以下冠军) at the ASICS Tennis Junior Tour in Guangzhou, the audience (观众) from Yunnan gave him the bamboo basket as a gift and the photo was taken.
“We always carry bamboo baskets when we work in the field. This is a typical (有代表性的) farming tool of the Va. I carried my rackets in this basket to honor my hometown.” Wang said. Before playing tennis, Wang was just a village boy.

“Don’t worry,” he explained, as if reading my doubts. “I really want to help you. I was once in your shoes. And someone gave me a helping hand.”
Later, I learned that he was actually a philanthropist (慈善家) who had almost dropped out of school.
