Watch this episode to get to know more about self-protecting when in an earthquake If an earthquake hits, don't head for the doorway. That's outdated advice. In the past earthquakes, the door frame was sometimes the only thing left standing. Modern home doorways aren't stronger than other household areas. Doors can also swing---injuring you in the process. Instead, the USGS recommends "DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON". This means dropping to the floor and getting under a desk or table. If you're outside, stay away from trees, power lines, and anything that could fall, including walls. If you're inside, avoid windows and elevators. If driving, pull over, stop, and stay there until the shaking ends. Avoid overpasses and power lines. If you're in a crowded area, crouch(蹲伏,俯身) and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. lf you're in an earthquake prone area(地震常发地), have a survival kit ready. And bolt/secure heavy items that could pose a hazard(安全隐患). With a little planning, you can be ready just in case disaster strikes. USGS: 美国地质勘探局(United States Geological Survey) Listen to an earthquake song and answer: What does the song suggest us doing when there is an earthquake? Write down some key information Watch and learn! Don't panic! Take cover! Go hide! Everything starts shaking. Earthquake buildings falling. Everyone, stay calm. Safety tips are worth learning. Cover mouth, nose and your head. Hide your body under the desk. Don't use elevator, take the stairs. Do not panic and be prepared. Outdoor run to open ground. Go quick, don't look around. If you're trapped, stay calm. Keep your strength. Don't make a sound. If you're bleeding, press down hard. Treat your wound with cotton wrap. When you hear people, you can shout. Keep in mind the help will come. Keep in mind the help will be here. Listening, speaking & talking Mrs Fors is a rescue worker. She hand her dog, Lucky are visiting a senior high school. I'd like to know what we can do to prevent natural disasters. Ms Fors: Well, there's no way to prevent earthquakes and storms. But if we prepare, we can keep them from becoming disasters that kill or injure people. To be ready, we should make a safety list of what to do, where to go, and who to contact. Listening Text Student 1: So what should we do if there's an earthquake? Ms Fors: Remember to "drop, cover, and hold on". Drop down onto your hands and knees, cover your head with your hands, and stay away from glass, windows, or anything that could fall. You could find cover under a desk or table. Hold on to the desk or table so it doesn't move away from you. Teacher: What should we do if we're outside when an earthquake happens? Ms Fors: Go to an open space away from buildings, trees, or power lines. Student 2: And what about after an earthquake? Ms Fors: Well, if you're trapped, you can use a cell phone to call or text for help. You can also tap on a pipe or a wall, or whistle for help. That way Lucky and I can find you! Student 2: I have a question for Lucky. Do you like being a rescue dog? Ms Fors: Lucky, what do you say? [Sound of dog barking twice] Teacher: I think he says he's a lucky dog.
