In October, columnist Thad Mellroy's article examined this issue, drawing reactions from professional narrators and publishers. In that piece, Mellroy profiled several players in this area of the still-developing digital audiobook. As the audiobook industry weighs up the pros and cons of cutting-edge technologies, a growing number of people are joining in the conversation. Mellroy's article created a stir(震动) in some narrator circles. Hillary Huber, a member of the newly formed Professional Audiobook Narrators Association (PANA), said, “It's practically all we talk about. We are gathering all professionals to protect our rights.” The association has seen a significant growth, with its membership rising to 400. Emily Lawrence, co-founder and president of PANA, emphasized the complexity of the matter. “It's very easy to reduce this issue to dollars and cents, whereas it's very complicated,” she declared. “If the AI narration snowballed, it wouldn't just be that the narrators would lose their jobs—the whole ecosystem relying on audiobooks would suffer.” Moreover, Lawrence pointed out a moral issue: “If I were to license my voice to be used, and lose all control over how to use it, my voice could potentially be used for content that I find unpleasant.” Some publishers are exploring the AI narration to cut costs and put more audiobooks in circulation. Anthony Goff, the audio publisher of Hachette Audio, however, stated, “While AI can provide a cost-effective solution to producing audiobooks, we do not expect AI narrators to replace human narrators, since there will always be a demand for the human touch, especially in types that require deep emotional involvement and storytelling skills.” This debate ultimately reflects a deeper conflict between profit and human values. Maybe a middle-ground approach is needed. 1.What leads to the significant growth of PANA's membership? A.The increasing costs of the AI narration. B.The decline of the audiobook industry. C.The growing concern about AI's threat. D.The audience's preference for audiobooks. 2.What does Emily Lawrence worry about? A.Many readers will be unemployed. B.Some narrators' voices will be misused. C.AI technology will be too expensive. D.The audiobook ecosystem will be destroyed. 3.Who suggests a balanced use of AI and human narrators? A.Thad Mellroy. B.Hillary Huber. C.Emily Lawrence. D.Anthony Goff. 4.What will the text probably discuss next? A.The practical solutions in the debate. B.The market analysis of future AI tools. C.The potential challenges of the AI narration. D.The negative impacts of AI on publishing. Ⅱ.七选五 (2025海南华侨中学开学考试) The information age has reached a critical point, with AI's superior computation ability surpassing that of humans. A report released by Goldman Sachs in March 2023 calculates that AI is capable of doing a quarter of all the work currently done by humans. 1 It would not just happen to individuals, and it could be pretty systemic. Across the European Union and US, the report further notes, 300 million jobs are expected to be lost to automation.    2 According to Martin Ford, author of Rule of the Robots:How Artificial Intelligence Will Transform Everything, three categories are going to be relatively secure in the foreseeable future. 3 That means you're not doing formulaic(公式化的) work or just rearranging things, but generating new ideas. For example, in the field of science, where your job is coming up with a novel strategy or solution, there's going to be a place for human beings.  The second category is jobs that require complex interpersonal skills like nurses, business consultants and investigative journalists. These are jobs where you need a very deep understanding of people. 4   The third safe zone includes jobs that really require lots of mobility and the problem-solving ability in unpredictable environments. Electricians, plumbers, welders(焊工) and the like all fall under this umbrella, where you're dealing with different situations all the time. In short, seeking roles in dynamic, shifting environments that include unpredictable tasks is a good way to avoid losing jobs to AI, at least for a while. It's important to note that an advanced education is not a defense against AI takeover. In many cases, more educated workers are going to be more threatened than even the least educated workers. 5 It's really hard to automate that job.  A.That could be terrible. B.Think of the person that cleans hotel rooms. C.The first would be jobs that are genuinely creative. D.However, they are not coming for all jobs, either. E.Thankfully, there are still jobs AI isn't capable of doing. F.That doesn't necessarily mean all jobs that are considered “creative” are safe. G.It'll be a long time before AI has the ability to really build relationships and interact. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.     Ⅲ.完形填空 (2025江西南昌期中) Sarkar is a nanotechnologist(纳米技术专家) and assistant professor at MIT. conflict with... 故填with。 类比启发 以-man、-woman结尾的合成词,变成复数时与man、woman的变化形式相同,如: saleswoman→saleswomen女售货员 chairwoman→chairwomen女主席 policeman→policemen警察 fireman→firemen消防队员 定势纠偏 human(人)、German(德国人)、Roman(罗马人)不是合成词,复数形式不遵循man的变化规律,而是按照规则变化,即用 humans、Germans、Romans。 pros and cons意为“利与弊”,故填and。 be superior to... 故填over。 on a(n)...basis意为“以……的方式”,on a first come, first served basis 意为“按先到先得的原则”。 be calculated to do sth. 2.had been cancel(l)ed 根据时间状语从句by the time we arrived可知主句谓语动词应用过去完成时,主语The get-together与cancel之间为被动关系,应用被动语态,故填had been cancel(l)ed。 7.to be lifted 考查不定式的被动式。 此处为allow sb./sth. to do sth. 故填to be lifted。 It is calculated that... 题型(二) 1.will be held 2.is referred to as 3.have on依靠 5.license v. 中间立场的;折中的 长难句 audiobooks, we do not expect AI narrators to replace human narrators, touch, especially in types ( involvement and storytelling skills). 故选A。 类别;种类 4.come up with提出;想出 5.in short总之;简言之 6.dynamic adj. 灵活性;机动性 3.and the like等等,诸如此类 1.A 细节句。 故选A。 C项中的“The first”与后面两段的The second和The third呼应。 2.D 根据下文中的“Her courage as a researcher comes from her 3 , who as a young woman...” 3.B 根据上文中的“Sarkar credits both of her parents as early 2 ”可知,她认为她早年的灵感源自父母,结合下文中的“a young woman”可知,这里指的是她的“母亲”。 故选A项。fund v. 8.A 根据上文中的“Meanwhile, Sarkar's father 5 her interest in engineering.” 故选A项。 10.C 根据上文中的“After 9 a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad”和下文中的“California to study nanoelectronics”并结合事情发展的先后顺序可知,萨卡尔是在印度理工学院获得电气工程学士学位后,去了加州学习纳米电子学,所以此处应为“前往”。故选C项。   11.A 根据上文中的“There, she tested out new ways”可知,萨卡尔在加州测试新方法,再结合本段最后的“developing a standout nanodevice(研发出了极好的纳米器件)”可推断,此处应为“制造”纳米器件。故选A项。 14.B 根据下文中的“She hopes to put nanodevices...in our brains.” 15.D 根据下文中的“but we could be superior to what we are”可知,我们可以比我们现在更好,由此可知,我们的大脑已是“非凡的”。
