教学重难点
教学重点:掌握词汇及描述天气(Weather conditions: ...)、观察记录(The plant... / It is...)、生长变化(...grew into... / become...)等句型;掌握观察日记的结构,能从文本中提取植物生长信息,完成仿写。
教学难点:用英语连贯描述植物不同阶段的生长变化;结合天气与生长情况,完成逻辑清晰、内容详实的观察日记写作。
教学过程——主要思路
Step 1: Warm-up & Lead-in
1. Show & Talk
T: (Show a pea plant photo) Look! This is a pea plant. What parts can you see?
Ss: Stem, leaves, flowers, pods...
T: Do you know how it grows? Today we’ll read Jeremy’s observation diary about his pea plant.
设计意图:通过直观图片激活学生对植物的认知,引入主题,激发阅读兴趣。
2. Vocabulary Preview
Teach key words with pictures:
bud: Show a small plant bud
stem: Point to the stem of a plant
bloom: Show a blooming flower
observation diary: Show Jeremy’s diary sample
设计意图:提前扫清阅读词汇障碍,符合学生认知规律。
Step 2: Pre-reading
T: Look at Jeremy’s diary. What information can we find in an observation diary?
Ss: Date, weather, what the plant looks like...
设计意图:引导学生预测观察日记的结构,培养阅读预判能力。
Step 3: While-reading
Activity 1: Skimming
Task: Read Jeremy’s 3 diary entries quickly and answer:
1. What plant is Jeremy growing? (Pea plant)
2. How many stages of growth does he record? (3 stages: seed → bud → bloom)
Check answers with the class.
设计意图:训练快速阅读能力,提取文本核心信息。
Activity 2: Scanning & Information Sorting
1. Group work: Divide students into 3 groups, each group responsible for one diary entry.
Task: Find the following information in your group’s entry:
Date
Weather conditions (temperature + weather)
Observations (what the plant looks like)
2. Share results: Each group presents their findings, and the teacher helps complete a class table:

Pair work: Discuss with your partner using the questions:
1. Did you ever grow a plant?

3. What did you learn about the process of planting?
Share 2-3 groups’ answers with the class.

Activity 2: Learn plant parts
T: (Show the plant diagram) Label the parts: root, stem, leaf, flower, pea pod.
Ss: Label the diagram together.

Activity 3: Write your own observation diary
1. Model the structure:
T: Our observation diary has 3 parts: Name of the plant → Date → Weather conditions → Observations → Picture.
Show the template from the textbook.
2. Group writing:
Each group chooses a plant (from the textbook pictures: tomato, potato, sunflower...).
Write a short observation diary together, using the sentence frames:
Weather conditions: ____, temperature around ____°C
Observations: The plant ____. It is ____.
3. Share: 2 groups read their diaries to the class.

Step 5: Summary & Homework
1. Summary
T: Today we learned how to read and write an observation diary. We know the structure: date, weather, and what the plant looks like.

2. Homework
1. Finish your group’s observation diary and draw a picture of your plant.
2. Grow a small plant at home (e.g., bean, sunflower) and record its growth for 2 weeks. Prepare to share your experience in the next class.
