Here's when and where to see these flowers across the US. National Cherry Blossom Festival(Washington, D.C., March 20-April 13) Twelve species of flowering cherry tree surround the Tidal Basin fronting the Potomac River in National Capital Parks. Their beautiful flowers attract some 1.5 million people during the four-week celebration, which is in honor of spring and international friendship. Events include a kite festival, a parade and fireworks, while across the capital, schools and neighborhoods plant new trees, and everything from buildings to buses are covered with pink. International Cherry Blossom Festival(Macon, Georgia, March 21-30) Georgia's Macon-Bibb County has the largest concentration of cherry trees in any U.S. county—and boasts nearly one hundred times more than the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The area celebrates its blossoms with plant sales, a parade, concerts, outdoor movies, and markets. The festival ends with hot air balloon rides and fireworks over downtown. Ohio University's Cherry Blossom Festival(Athens, Ohio, March 31-April 15) Ohio University's 230 cherry trees, living gifts from its sister institution, Chubu University in Japan, line the bike path along the Hocking River beyond campus. Each year, during peak bloom—usually late March to mid-April—the blossoms across from Wren baseball stadium are lit by lights for late-night viewing. The Japanese Student Association hosts a Sakura Festival to celebrate their flowering. 21.What do the National Cherry Blossom Festival and the International Cherry Blossom Festival have in common? A.Both of them include a kite festival. B.Both of them include outdoor movies. C.Both of them end with hot air balloon rides. D.Both of them include a parade and fireworks. 22.When can you attend the Ohio University's Cherry Blossom Festival? A.April 25. B.April 13. C.March 30. D.March 21. 23.In which column can you read this text? A.Travel. B.Health. C.Lifestyle. D.Education. B A six-year-old longing to keep a unicorn(独角兽) in her backyard figured she'd get the hard part out of the way first. Last November, Madeline wrote a letter to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control(DACC) with a straightforward request. “Dear DACC, I would like your approval for my having a unicorn in my backyard if I can find one. Please send me a letter in response.” Mayeda, director of the department, replied two weeks later. She said the department does in fact license unicorns under certain conditions. Those include polishing the unicorn's horn at least once a month with a soft cloth, feeding it watermelon at least once a week, covering it with only sparkles and giving it regular access to sunlight, moonbeams and rainbows. And, because unicorns are indeed very rare to find, the department also gave Madeline a toy unicorn to keep her company during her search, as a token of appreciation. “It is always rewarding to hear from young people who thoughtfully consider the requirements of providing a loving home for animals,” Mayeda wrote in the letter. “I like your sense of responsibility towards pets to seek permission in advance to keep a unicorn in your backyard.” Mayeda told The Washington Post that this is the first time the department has received a request for a license for a unicorn or any other mythical creature. They were impressed with the first-grader wanting to ask permission in the first place, and doing her research to work out how to go about that. She and her colleagues deal with a lot of “life-and-death” issues on the job, whether that's seeing cases of animal abuse or animals hurting people, or making decisions about having to put down dangerous or sick animals. So Madeline's letter has considerably brightened their spirits, and she is due to visit the department this week to discuss her unicorn license application. Safe to say, she's in for a magical surprise. 24.Why did Madeline write the letter? A.To apply to visit a unicorn. B.To figure out how to find a unicorn. C.To learn to provide animal care. D.To ask permission to keep a unicorn. 25.What can we learn from paragraph 3? A.Madeline's application was not approved. B.Madeline was presented with a live unicorn. C.Requirements should be met for the license. D.Guidance was given for her search. 26.Which of the following best describes Mayeda? A.Generous. B.Easy-going. C.Mean. D.Thoughtful. 27.Why does the department think the letter “has considerably brightened their spirits”? A.Because they are touched with the girl's deeds. B.Because animal protection is a life-and-death issue. C.Because they are worn out with their daily work. D.Because it is the first application letter for a unicorn. C Natural disasters take many different forms and can happen without warning. Earthquakes, floods, volcano eruptions, droughts, typhoons, and hurricanes are all natural disasters. The earthquake of 26 December, 2004 resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in living memory. It was a massive underwater quake that occurred in the Indian Ocean. This caused a huge tsunami to cross the Indian Ocean. It destroyed coastlines and communities and brought death and destruction. The survivors needed fresh water, food and shelter as well as medical help. People from all over the world offered assistance and made donations. The surface of the Earth has not always looked as it does today; it is moving continuously(although very slowly) and has done so for billions of years. This is one cause of earthquakes—one section of the Earth crashes into another. Scientists can predict where this might happen. The crack in the surface of the earth is called a fault line. However, earthquakes do not always happen along fault lines, which is why they are so dangerous and unpredictable. All the disasters are very dangerous and continue to kill thousands of people each year, but they are nowhere near the most dangerous disaster to ever happen on earth. One type of event in the earth's history has regularly killed millions of beings: asteroid(小行星) impacts(撞击). About once every million years the Earth is hit by a piece of rock and ice from space large enough to cause massive destruction(including earthquakes, volcano eruptions and ice ages) and sometimes to kill entire species. Sixty-six million years ago more than half the earth's species were killed by such a disaster, including all the dinosaurs. Disasters on the Earth may seem dangerous, but the biggest threat to humans is likely to come from space. 28.What did the world do when the tsunami occurred in the Indian Ocean? A.They gave away money to the beggars. B.They donated money to help the survivors. C.They donated their possessions to the survivors. D.They helped rebuild the coastlines and communities. 29.What can scientists predict about earthquakes? A.The possible time. B.The possible climate. C.The possible place. D.The possible frequency. 30.What can we conclude according to the passage? A.There are some signs before natural disasters. B.Earthquakes always happen along fault lines. C.The huge tsunami in the Indian Ocean was caused by an earthquake. D.We humans can do something to prevent natural disasters. 31.According to the passage, which can be the most dangerous natural disaster? A.Asteroid impacts. B.Earthquakes. C.Tsunamis. D.Volcanoes. D Several years ago, Jason Box, a glaciologist, flew 31 giant rolls of white plastic to a glacier(冰川) in Greenland. He and his team spread them across 10,000 feet of ice, then left. His idea was that the white blanket would reflect back the rays of the sun, keeping the ice cool below. When he came back to check the results, he found it worked. Exposed ice had melted faster than covered ice. He had saved two feet of the glacier in a short time. No coal plants(火电厂) were shut down, no jobs were lost, and nobody was taxed or fired. Just the sort of fix we're looking for. “Thank you, but no thank you,” said Konrad Steffen, a climate scientist. He told Craig Childs, an author and commentator, that people think technology can save the planet, but there are other things we need to deal with, like consumption. They burned $50,000 just for the helicopter to bring the plastic to the glacier. This experiment, quote-unquote, gives people false hope that climate change can be fixed without changing human behavior. It can't. Technology won't give us a free ride. Individuals respond to climate change differently. Climatologist Maureen Raymo is hardly alone in her prediction that someday soon we won't be climate victims(受害者); we will be climate choosers. More scientists agree with her—if the human race survives, the engineers will get smarter, the tools will get better, and one day we will control the climate. But what then? “Just the mention of us controlling the climate sent a small shiver down my back,” Craig writes. “Something sounded wrong about stopping ice melting by our own will,” he says. Me? I like it better when the earth takes care of itself. I guess one day we will have to run the place, but for the moment, sitting at my desk, looking out at the trees bending wildly and the wind howling, I'm happy not to be in charge. 32.Why does the author mention Jason Box's experiment in the first paragraph? A.To introduce a possible solution to climate change. B.To describe a misleading attempt to fix the climate change. C.To report on a successful experiment on saving the glacier. D.To arouse people's attention to the problem of global warming. 33.Which statement would Konrad Steffen most probably agree with? A.The experiment against climate change will not succeed. B.Technology is not the final solution, let alone its high cost. C.It's best to deal with climate change without changing our behavior. D.Jason's experiment plays a significant role in fixing climate change. 34.Which of the following words has the similar meaning to the underlined word in Paragraph 3? A.Approval. B.Urge. C.Shudder(发抖). D.Submission. 35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A.But should we fix the climate? B.Is climate change a real problem? C.How can we take care of the earth? You don't have to turn into a vegetarian, but you might want to consider increasing your greens. Vegetarian meals are good for your health, and they have a lower carbon footprint. We ran down the stairs to the main floor. The girls stood by the front door while I checked for the cause of the alarms. When I opened the door to my living room, I could see the carpets were smoking heavily. My house was really on fire. I shouted to the girls, “Get out! The house is on fire!” They turned and ran out the front door, followed by me. Then we ran through the woods to our neighbor's house. I knocked on my neighbor's front door as fire engines passed by. Later, I was told that it took the firemen a long time to put out the fire. Standing outside my burned house the next day, I got caught up in lots of questions. I had no cash or bank cards. How was I going to pay for anything? Where would we live? What would happen to my house now? I didn't even know where to start. Luckily, our community helped us a lot. The fire burned almost everything, but I still decided to visit our burned house to search through the ruins. It's interesting how you learn what really matters to you in those conditions. I found myself primarily searching for my father's watch. I also found other treasures as I searched for his watch, including the ring my mom gave me when I left for college, a watch my grandmother gave me for high school graduation, and my daughter's unworn dress, which was ruined. I found the last shirt my father had worn before his hospital stay. We had taken a trip after his second course of chemo(化疗). It was the last vacation we had taken before his death. At that moment, I felt differently about the fire. I realized the fire gave us more than it took away.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    My dad's watch is on my bedside table now, which is a reminder that anyone or anything can be lost without warning. 1.B 2.A 3.A 4.C 5.B 6.C 7.B 8.A 9.B 10.B 11.A 12.B 13.C 14.A 15.C 16.B 17.B 18.C 19.C 20.A 21.D 22.B 23.A 24.D 25.C 26.D 27.A 28.B 29.C 30.C 31.A 32.B 33.B 34.C 35.A 36.F 37.D 38.A 39.B 40.G 41.D 42.C 43.C 44.A 45.D 46.B 47.A 48.B 49.C 50.B 51.D 52.C 53.A 54.B 55.C 56.which 57.alarming 58.because 59.shot 60.their 61.reduction 62.hunting 63.to 64.measures 65.are being built 第二部分 阅读 第一节 A ◎语篇解读 本文是一篇应用文。 根据Ohio University's Cherry Blossom Festival(Athens, Ohio, March 31-April 15)可知,如果想参加该节日可以在4月13日去。 故选A。 故选A。 根据第三段中的“Scientists can predict where this might happen”可知,科学家可以预测可能发生地震的地点。 故选A。 故选A。 36.F 根据小标题“Take notes electronically.” 故选A。 41.D 根据前文的“A storm was coming.” 42.C 根据前文的“making driving impossible”和后文的“onto the shoulder of the road and stopped”可知,雨下得很大,驾驶变得困难,作者不得不把车开到路边停下来。 remind sb. of... 故选A。 45.D 根据前文的“A reporter stood inside the Houston stadium”可知,此处指记者在现场采访受灾民众。故选D。 46.B 根据前文的“dirty”和后文的“some had no shoes on their feet”可知,灾民穿着又脏又破的衣服。 故选A。 48.B 根据后文的“me for our volunteer club and we came up with a plan”可知,作者的朋友们和作者一起去了志愿者俱乐部。故选B。 49.C 根据后文的“toys and give them to the kids at the stadium”和“the donation boxes were overflowing with new toys”可知,作者和朋友收集玩具后再把玩具送给孩子们。故选C。 50.B 根据前文的“give them to the kids at the stadium”和后文的“smiles lighting up their faces”可知,玩具能够给经历灾难的孩子们带来快乐。故选B。 51.D 根据后文的“the word to the school and other organizations”可知,此处表示将信息广而告之,符合募集活动宣传的过程。故选D。 52.C 根据后文的“the stadium with our gifts”可知,此处描述了作者和朋友携带捐赠物品进入体育馆。故选C。 53.A 根据后文的“toward us from all directions, smiles lighting up their faces”可知,此处描写了孩子们急切而兴奋地跑向他们的情景,“飞奔”符合语境。故选A。 54.B 根据前文的“Suddenly, a phone call brought me back to the present. It is reported that the glacier at the North Pole is melting faster than ever. There is no doubt that the earth is getting warmer and warmer. It's time for us to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To begin with, we can turn off the electrical appliances when they're not being used. In addition, it's necessary to use things made from recycled materials. Furthermore, more trees should be planted, which can absorb carbon dioxide amazingly. In a word, I do believe our joint efforts to slow global warming count and will definitely pay off. 第二节 One possible version: I realized the fire gave us more than it took away. One of the greatest gifts we received was the kindness and care from our community. Some people dropped by with food, clothing and money. Others came to help us search for treasures in the ruins. My warm-hearted neighbor offered a room to the three of us while our house was being repaired. Another greatest gift we received was the belief that nothing matters more than family. The fire did burn away lots of our personal items, but we saved the most valuable things. My dad's watch is on my bedside table now, which is a reminder that anyone or anything can be lost without warning. I learn to treasure everything I have and not to complain about the loss. I also teach Alexis and Sierra to do the same as me. Most importantly, my girls and I keep paying attention to those who are in trouble. It is of great importance for us to pay back the kindness we have received, for which we will be grateful forever. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
