Today we have invited Prof. Stone to talk about the role of elderly people in our society. Welcome to our show, Prof. Stone. M: Thanks. To begin with, I’d like to tell a story from my own life. Several years ago, when my grandparents were well into their eighties, they were no longer able to care for themselves very well. My grandfather was afraid of leaving the only home they had lived for the past 60 years. The idea of having to sell their home and move into a retirement home was an extremely painful experience for them. Indeed, old age for them and many older Americans can mean not only the possible failure of one’s health but the loss of identity and self-worth. W: Yes, it’s true. What do you have to say about the problem of old age? M: Many experts have given talks here that have focused on the medical care and the development of public services for senior citizens. M: Well, the Global Design Competition requires competitors to come up with a new design for a kitchen device. W: I see, and are there any special conditions? Does it have to save energy for example? M: Actually, that was the focus in last year’s competition. This year’s different. We have to adopt a novel approach to existing technology. W: I understand. So what kitchen device have you chosen? M: Well, I chose the dishwasher. W: Interesting. Why? M: Well, they’re an everyday kitchen device in most Australian houses but they all look similar. I think people will be prepared to pay a little more money for something different. W: Good idea. I saw you’ve called your design “the Rockpool”. Why is that? M: Basically, that’s because it looks like the rock pools you find on a beach. The top is made of glass so that you can look down into it. 【Text 10】 M: Marie Curie loved to study and hoped to become a scientist from her early childhood. Her interest in science was encouraged by her father, who was a teacher of physics. In 1891, she left Poland and entered the University of Paris. Four years later, she graduated with the highest grade in her class. Then, she remained in the same university doing scientific research work. In order to discover something that gave off a kind of radiation, she did some experiments carefully again and again. Finally in 1902 she and her husband succeeded in finding the radioactive element radium. Their achievement won them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903. In 1911, she won another Nobel Prize, all by herself in chemistry. Thus she became the first female scientist to win two Nobel Prizes. John athan, this weekend, I am going to organize my workspace. B I was a student at the College-Conservatory of Music, looking for something to do outside of musical harmony classes. Somehow, I found myself at a printer's office in Northern Kentucky, making final edits for Ed's small Cincinnati newspaper. It wasn't until I'd been there for a few months that I realized how much Ed changed the world around him and changed my life in the process. Ed started the paper because the local daily papers of the time turned a blind eye to some problems in the local community and gave little space to social issues affecting disadvantaged groups. Ed's paper was a small, 16-page monthly one, handed out for free in bars. He often encouraged “non-writers” to write if they had a story to tell. Some of them were inexperienced writers. He worked with them until the words better expressed their ideas. When I turned in a story about an unpopular topic, he only asked, “Is it true?” and “Does it affect people?” Satisfied with my answers, he ran the story. What drove Ed? It wasn't fame, for the paper's limited resources (资源) kept him unknown; it wasn't money, for he ran the paper in deficit (赤字) for its whole life of eight years. More than once, I remembered him having to choose between paying his rent and paying the printer. Perhaps his real drive was revealed in a recent phone conversation. While talking about a common friend, I said, “He fought the good fight.” Ed responded, “The good fight's never over.” I don't believe events make heroes; I believe heroes are the result of long-standing goodness. Ed's story proved the value of constancy (坚定不移) and expressed the significance of working for good causes. He showed how one person, working tirelessly, could help a community get over its problems. Above all, his example showed me the necessity of making my own contributions to the causes I believe in. 24.Why did Ed set up the Cincinnati newspaper? A.To promote new writers' works. B.To improve his printer's business. C.To find talent from disadvantaged groups. D.To reflect overlooked social problems. 25.What is Ed's attitude towards storytellers like the author? A.Unfavorable. B.Supportive. C.Doubtful. D.Picky. 26.What does the phrase “the good fight” in paragraph 4 mainly refer to? A.Making a name for himself. B.Overcoming funding problems. C.Doing worthy and kind causes. D.Creating a significant profit. 27.Which of the following can best describe Ed? A.Determined and caring. B.Proud and single-minded. C.Frank and generous. D.Careful and hard-working. C When living or travelling internationally, we notice the differences between cultures before seeing the similarities. At first, some differences are easy to spot. Over time, however, there are some curious similarities between how people in the UK and China communicate. Indeed, international residents in both countries often complain about having to read what local people really mean, because it often differs from what is said. In the UK, outsiders often get confused when they realise that a person making rude comments is actually showing love. In situations like this, context is everything. Likewise, in China, outsiders must infer most meaning from context and from what is not said, rather than from what is. Otherwise, misunderstandings happen. The UK and China contexts share further cultural features, which greatly influence how people communicate, including the cultural trait (特点) of non-conflict. The British will do everything to avoid conflict. They will probably tell a waiter it was lovely even when served with poor quality food. This cultural trait can cause major misunderstandings. For example, a British business partner who is deeply unhappy with your proposal will probably say “there are just a couple of small concerns” rather than telling you that the entire proposal is unsatisfactory. Chinese communication shows very similar conflict prevention. Often challenges, errors, mistakes, or problems remain completely taboos (禁忌) as topics of discussion, even though everyone knows of their existence. Instead, people talk about working towards further goals or objectives, rather than directly admit that the current situation is far from satisfactory. Likewise, Chinese people like to keep a sense of harmony within all environments, and so avoid open criticism of each other. This is very similar to the way that a British person might describe a colleague as “very confident” rather than “very rude”. In this sense, the British and Chinese can appreciate each other for harmony. 28.What does the author suggest in paragraph 2? A.Polite comments are encouraged. B.Learning what is not said is difficult. C.Context is important in communication. D.Misunderstandings often happen among outsiders. 29.What will the British and Chinese probably both agree with? A.Talking over taboos in discussions. B.Preventing misunderstandings in work. C.Avoiding discussing one's mistakes in public. D.Making use of cultural traits in communication. 30.How does the author develop this passage? A.By using figures. B.By making comparisons. C.By listing reasons. D.By making classifications. 31.Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage? A.Cultural Differences Between the UK and China B.Avoiding Conflict: British Communication Styles C.The Importance of Context in Chinese Communication D.Shared Cultural Characters in Communication: the UK and China D “Why does Grandpa have ear hair?” Just a few years ago my child was so curious to know “why” and “how” that we had to cut off her questions five minutes before bedtime. Now as a soon-to-be fourth grader, she says that she dislikes school because “it's not fun to learn”. I am shocked. As a scientist and parent, I have done everything I can to promote a love of learning in my child. Where did I go wrong? My child's experience is not unique. Developmental psychologist Susan Engel notes that curiosity defined as “spontaneous (自发的)” investigation and eagerness for new information can drop dramatically in children by the fourth grade. In Wonder: Childhood and the Lifelong Love of Science, Yale psychologist Frank C. Keil details the development of wonder—a spontaneous passion for exploring, discovering, and understanding something. He takes us on a journey from its early development, when wonder drives common sense and scientific reasoning, through the drop-off in wonder that often occurs, to the trap of life in a society that devalues wonder. As Keil notes, children are particularly rich in wonder while they are rapidly developing causal mechanisms (因果机制) in the preschool and early elementary school years. They are sensitive to the others' knowledge and goals, and they expertly use their desire for questioning. Children's questions, particularly those about “why” and “how” support the development of causal mechanisms which can be used to help their day-to-day reasoning. Unfortunately, as Keil notes, “Adults greatly underestimate young children's causal mechanisms.” In the book, Wonder, Keil shows that we can support children's ongoing wonder by playing games with them as partners, encouraging question-asking, and focusing on their abilities to reason and draw conclusions. A decline in wonder is not unavoidable. Keil reminds us that we can accept wonder as a desirable positive quality that exists in everyone. I value wonder deeply, and Wonder has given me hope by proposing a future full of wonder for my child. 32.What is a common problem among fourth graders? A.They upset their parents too often. B.Their desire to learn declines sharply. C.Their love of fun disappears quickly. D.They ask too many strange questions. 33.What can be inferred about children's causal mechanisms in paragraph 4? A.They control children's sensitivity. B.They slightly change in early childhood. C.They hardly support children's reasoning. D.They develop through children's questioning. 34.How can parents support children's ongoing wonder according to Keil? A.By monitoring their games. B.By estimating their abilities. C.By welcoming inquiring minds. D.By providing reasonable conclusions. 35.What is the text? A.A book review. B.A news report. C.A research paper. D.A children's story. How to Have Open Communication When you can communicate openly, you can start improving your relationships, both personal and professional, in a number of ways. 36 There are a few things that you can do when you have an open conversation.     37 Be mindful of where and when you need to have a discussion with someone, especially if you are having an important disagreement. Someone is not likely to be open when communicating if you are surrounded by family or out in public. Therefore, have a discussion when it's more convenient for both you and your partner.    Have patience. When emotions are high, it can be easy to be swept in those feelings and want to get all your points across. But this can make communication more difficult because you are so focused on your feelings that you aren't able to focus on what you need to say. Be patient and allow silence to happen. 38     Take the time to listen to what the other person is saying. 39 This allows you to see if there is any misunderstanding and allows you the time to understand his words accurately. You don't need to agree on all his words, but it is important to understand where they're coming from.    Be honest about your thoughts and your feelings. Sometimes we feel the need to soften our words to lessen the blow. 40 After all, when we leave out certain details, we're not able to communicate openly. You need to be honest with your partner about your needs and your experiences. By doing so, you're hopefully closer to being able to tackle the issue.  A.Wait for the appropriate time and place. B.Discuss what you need to communicate openly. C.Bring something positive into your communication. D.This could be because we don't want to hurt the other person. E.Ask questions if you need to and even repeat what he has said. F.Open communication increases trust and helps bridge differences. G.Sometimes you need time to think and accurately express yourself. 36. 37. 38. 39. 40. About 15 years ago, I packed my suitcase and traveled to a town a few hours' drive away. Thank you! The house next door had been empty for more than a year. Then one day, workmen arrived and started to clean and paint the place. My siblings(兄弟姐妹)and I were curious about who would be moving in. We did not have long to wait. A week after the house was prepared, a truck arrived. We watched with interest as the movers carried the furniture into the house. The furniture looked expensive. Our new neighbors must be wealthy people. However, it never occurred to us four children that rich people may not be interested in befriending us. Our house badly needed a new coat of paint. We were clean and tidy most of the time, but our clothes were clearly old and worn. Father drove an old car that we could hear coming down the road long before it was in sight. We were simple, ordinary people. When the new occupants arrived in a big and shiny car, we pushed one another to have a good look at them from our bedroom window. Mother had forbidden us from hanging around our gate. She said our new neighbors needed privacy, whatever that was. A lady who was beautifully dressed got out of the car. To our joy, we saw a boy and a girl about our age following her into the house. They did not look excited to move into their new home though. That did not stop us from wanting to get to know them. The next evening, we were playing hide-and-seek in the garden when we spotted the boy and the girl watching us. My siblings and I went to the fence that separated our gardens. My eldest brother Kian called to the pair. They looked at us unsmilingly. Their mother appeared next, took one look at us and brought the two into the house. We were disappointed to have such snooty (傲慢的) neighbors. We decided to leave them alone after that. It was two weeks later that we heard screams coming from next door late one night. minutes and took the patient to hospital. coastal areas”及“removing litter that harms marine life and ecosystems”可知,Coastal Cleanup Crew的核心目标是保护海洋生态系统。 AGE, SKILLS, WHAT TO BRING部分中的“Those under 18 must have a signed Parental Consent Form.” 故选A。 AGE, SKILLS, WHAT TO BRING部分中的“We will be working rain or shine, so bring your raincoat if necessary.” 根据第二段中的“Ed started the paper because the local daily papers of the time turned a blind eye to some problems in the local community and gave little space to social issues affecting disadvantaged groups.” 结合最后一段中“working for good causes”可知,“the good fight”指为正义事业(如关注社会问题、帮助弱势群体)不懈奋斗。故选C。 27.A 根据第二段中的“Ed started the paper because the local daily papers of the time turned a blind eye to some problems in the local community and gave little space to social issues affecting disadvantaged groups.”及第三段中的“He often encouraged ‘non-writers’ to write if they had a story to tell.” 故选A。 根据第三段中的“The British will do everything to avoid conflict.”和第四段第一句“Chinese communication shows very similar conflict prevention.” Wonder: Childhood and the Lifelong Love of Science一书中详细描述好奇心的发展,分析了为什么孩子们对外界事物的好奇心会在四年级时急剧减少,并提出了关于如何支持孩子们的好奇心的建议。 根据第二段中的“Developmental psychologist Susan Engel notes that curiosity defined as ‘spontaneous’ investigation and eagerness for new information can drop dramatically in children by the fourth grade.” 根据第四段最后一句“Children's questions, particularly those about ‘why’ and ‘how’ support the development of causal mechanisms which can be used to help their day-to-day reasoning.” 根据倒数第二段中的“In the book, Wonder, Keil shows that we can support children's ongoing wonder by playing games with them as partners, encouraging question-asking...” 故选A。 36.F 根据空前句“When you can communicate openly, you can start improving your relationships, both personal and professional, in a number of you are having an important disagreement.(注意在何时何地你需要与某人进行讨论,特别是当你们有重要的分歧时。)” 38.G 根据上文“you are so focused on your feelings that you aren't able to focus on what you need to say”可知,你太专注于你的感觉,而无法专注于你需要说什么。 39.E 根据下文“This allows you to see if there is any misunderstanding and allows you the time to understand his words accurately.(这可以让你看看是否有任何误解,并让你有时间准确地理解他的话。)” 40.D 根据空前句“Sometimes we feel the need to soften our words to lessen the blow.(有时我们觉得有必要使我们的语言柔和一些,以减轻打击。)” hold 与其逻辑主语the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee之间是被动关系,所以用过去分词held作后置定语。 58.that/which 考查定语从句。 故填that 或which。 故填an。 故填as。 由空前的the historical and cultural及空后的介词of可知,此处应用名词形式。 One possible version: The Person I Admire Most Dear fellow students,     There are many respectable people around us. And the person I admire most is Mrs Wu, aged 30, my English teacher, who has been teaching English for 6 years.     Mrs Wu is thoughtful and kind to us just like our mothers. Once, one of my classmates got injured unexpectedly, and without hesitation, Mrs Wu took him to hospital for medical treatment. What impresses me most is that she always tries new ways to make her classes lively and interesting. Also, she is very patient with us and always helps us find solutions to problems when we turn to her for help. In my eyes, Mrs Wu is more than our teacher. She's also our best friend. That's why she deserves our respect. That's all. Thank you! One possible version: It was two weeks later that we heard screams coming from next door late one night. Without hesitation, my father sprang to his feet and rushed out of the house, with the rest of us following him. As we stepped into the next door, we found the boy and the girl crying hopelessly beside their mother, who was lying at the bottom of the staircase where she had fallen. My mother tried to comfort the two kids while my father ran over to check how terrible the situation was by trying to speak to the poor lady, but she wasn't responding to anything. Father called an ambulance which arrived within minutes and took the patient to hospital. My parents brought the children back to our house. Mother fed them some hot soup to calm their nerves. The kids told us that their father was away on a business trip, so we helped them contact their father who promised them he would catch a plane and join them as soon as possible. So they stayed the night with us. My sister and I had to give up our room for them but we did not mind. Before they went to bed, we shook hands and became friends.
