What a shame that she had completely 3 !
Two years ago, she 4 an international competition for the first time, and unexpectedly she won two world titles. After that, she brought back one shining medal after another in many international competitions. What she got in return was all smiles, flowers and camera flashes. The more she 5 , the more afraid she was to lose. So winning was actually a big burden (负担) for her.
To avoid people at the 6 , she walked slowly behind the team. When she found that very few people greeted her and reporters seemed to avoid her, she felt hurt and ashamed of herself.
Suddenly, she saw a pair of shoes in front of her. It was the stewardess! The stewardess smiled and said, “I watched your performance on television. I knew you would come home today. So I am here especially to 7 you.”
“I did 8 ,” she said, lowering her head.
“No. You did your best.”
“But I failed.”
“Nobody can avoid failure. I believe failure is as 9 to you as success. Failure belongs to the past, and victory belongs to the future.” The stewardess’ voice came gentle but strong.
Hearing these words, the girl raised her head. The stewardess brought her hands out from behind her back with colourful 10 , which she presented to the girl. The nice smell seemed to turn into something powerful going through her body. She was moved to tears.

A lifetime of books
Nancy has always found it hard to introduce herself. But she loves being called “America’ s Librarian (图书管理员).” As a librarian, she has spent her life 1 and writing about books. She became famous after she was regularly invited to talk about books on public radio.
Nancy’s 2 for books dates back to her childhood. At her primary school library, she discovered My Father’s Dragon and Lad: A Dog. Young Nancy mostly read “horse and dog books” until she met Miss Whitehead at the public library. The librarian 3 her The Hobbit, the Mary Poppins series and many others. But the best discussions really begin when some people don’t like the book,” Nancy says. She 9 people to choose books that some might not like or even finish.
It’s also important, Nancy adds, not to start a group meeting by asking everyone what they 10 the book. That would kill the discussion before it even begins. Instead, Nancy suggests starting with a “neutral (中立的)” question, like what the title means or why the writer wrote the book the way he or she did.

Several years ago while attending a communication course I experienced a most unusual thing. The teacher asked us to list anything in our past that we felt ashamed (羞愧的) of or 1 . Then he invited us to read our lists aloud.
The man next to me raised his hand and volunteered this story: I grew up in a small town. When I was in high school, there was a sheriff (治安官) that 2 of us kids liked. One night my two friends and I decided to play a trick (恶作剧) on him. We climbed the tall water tank (水箱) in the middle of the town and wrote on the tank in bright red paint: Sheriff Brown is a 3 . The next day almost the whole town saw our sign. Within two hours Sheriff Brown had us in his office. My friends told the truth but I 4 .
Nearly 20 years later Sheriff Brown’s name appears on my list. I didn’t even know if he was still 5 . Last weekend I checked the phone numbers in my hometown and found there was a Roger Brown still listed. I 6 his number. After a few rings I heard “Hello?” I said, “Sheriff Brown?” Paused. “Yes.” “Well this is Jimmy Calkins.”
“And I want you to know that I did it!” I shouted. “I 7 it!” he shouted back. We had a good 8 and a lively discussion. He finally said, “Jimmy, I forgave (原谅) you a long time ago. And I’m 9 that you call me to get the thing off your chest (胸).”
What Jimmy did inspired me. I always keep the 10 of what I learned from the course in my heart: It’s never too late to right the past wrongdoings.

When I was a young boy, our whole family lived in my grandma’s old house right beside a set of railroad tracks (轨道). The whole house would 1 each time the train rolled by. That made me kind of uncomfortable, but living there was somewhat 2 , too. There were few trains, so I often spent my summer afternoons walking down the tracks. First I held my arms out and watched my feet as I walked. This only led to me falling off after a few 6 . I decided to walk backwards once but quickly fell and hurt my ankle. When I started to look ahead and I put one foot in front of 7 , I soon walked with ease.

It’s pleasant to 9 the wonderful experiences in the past, which bring you much fun. However, you might not see the way ahead with your eyes on the awful memories. Then fill your each step with love and you will walk on with a light heart.

Do you remember the useful sentences like “It’s a piece of cake” or “It serves you right” in English learning? They carry more 1 than the words themselves. In Chinese culture, we also have lots of similar useful expressions like “drinking ink (墨水)” and “An inch (寸) of time is worth an inch of gold”.
“Drinking ink” is a common expression to show that a person is 2 . Is there anyone who really drinks ink? It could be true in Chinese history. During the Northern Qi Dynasty, those who 3 very badly in the exam would be punished by drinking one liter (升) of ink. Even if they were found to have poor handwriting or make up something terrible, they would be taken into a special room to drink ink. The rule was accepted by the following dynasties. Nowadays, this expression is 4 used to describe people’s ways of receiving education or their level of education. For example, “drinking foreign ink” means one has studied overseas. “Drinking little ink” means a 5 level of education.
“An inch of time is worth an inch of gold” means that an inch of time has the same 6 as an inch of gold. It is also the first half of a saying, “An inch of time is worth an inch of gold, but an inch of time cannot be bought 7 an inch of gold”. In ancient times, time was measured (测量) by inches because people used the sundial as a time-keeping tool. It is made of a flat and 8 plate on which time degrees are shown. As the sun moves from rising to setting, the length of the gnomon’s shadow changes from long to short and short to long. This is 9 the sundial tells time.
Language cannot be separated from culture. Language learning can help us 10 understand the cultures behind the countries and communicate more with the people from different countries.
