During a school picnic, Tom Sawyer and his friend Becky Thatcher explored a large cave near their town. They walked and played happily, looking at the strange shapes on the walls. They didn’t notice how far they had gone. Soon, they were alone in the dark, silent tunnels. Becky started to worry. “Tom, I think we are lost!” she cried.
Tom tried to stay calm. He had a long kite string (绳子) in his pocket. He tied one end to a rock. “We can use this to find our way back,” he said. They walked on, with Tom letting out the string. But after many turns, they still saw no exit. Their last candle burned out. They were now in complete darkness. Becky was very frightened and cried. Tom held her hand tightly.
They were tired and hungry. The only food they had was a small piece of cake, which they shared. Tom knew they must keep moving. He told Becky to wait while he explored with the string. In another tunnel, he saw a tiny light far away. He ran back to Becky, shouting, “We are saved! I saw daylight!”
Tom led Becky towards the light. It was a small hole in the cave wall. They climbed out and found themselves near the river. Some men from the town were searching for them. They were safe at last. Becky felt pleased. The town was overjoyed. Tom became a hero again for his bravery and clever thinking.

What is a grassland?
A grassland is a biome (生物群落区) that is covered with grasses. Grass is everything to a grassland. Grass is food for animals. Grass can keep the grassland warm and wet. Grass stops the wind from blowing away the soil (土壤).
There are two kinds of grasslands. Temperate grasslands are one kind. Temperate means the environment has a mild climate (温和气候) and four seasons. Temperate grasslands have rich soil. Tropical grasslands are the other kind. Tropical means the environment is near the equator and is warm all year round. Tropical grasslands have a rainy season and a dry season. They usually have more trees and poorer soil than temperate grasslands.
Both temperate and tropical grasslands have a yearly rainfall of 25 to 75 centimeters. With so little rain, the land can dry out. Fires can start easily.
What adaptations (适应性) help grassland plants and animals survive (存活)?
Different grasslands have different kinds of grasses. However, nearly all grassland grasses have adaptations to growing well in dry conditions.
Grasses have deep roots. The roots can take in water and keep nutrients (营养). When a fire burns, everything above ground is destroyed (破坏). Down below, the roots survive. They hold on to their water and nutrients.
After a fire, new stalks can grow from the roots. The old, dead grass becomes part of soil. Gradually, the soil gets richer and richer.
Most grasses have adaptations to growing from the roots. This helps them survive and grow after animals eat the tops of the plants.
Trees that grow in tropical grasslands also have adaptations that help them survive. For example, the baobab tree grows leaves only during the wet season. It loses its leaves during the dry season.
Many kinds of animals live in grasslands. All of them have adaptations that help them survive. Some grassland animals have flat teeth for eating grass. For example, with their flat teeth, zebras bite off (咬下) the tops of grasses that are difficult to cut.
6. What plays the most important role in a grassland?
A. The tree. B. The soil. C. The grass. D. The animal.
7. What do the two kinds of grasslands have in common?
A. The kind of grasses. B. The kind of climate.
C. The number of seasons. D. The low yearly rainfall.
8. What can help grass grow well in dry conditions?
A. Big fires. B. Deep roots. C. Rich soil. D. New stalks.
9. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Zebras use flat teeth for biting off grasses.
B. After a fire, the grass on the grassland dies forever.
C. The leaves of the baobab trees drop during the wet season.
D. Most grasses can’t grow after animals eat the tops of the plants.
10. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. Life in the grassland. B. Fires in the grassland.
C. Plants in the grassland. D. Climate of the grassland.

You may feel that math is hard and boring. Is it possible that you’ve been looking at math in the wrong way? With International Day of Math coming on March 14, Teens interviewed Li Xing, a math professor (教授) at Ning Xia University. We asked if math can be beautiful and fun. Here’s what he said.
Numbers are beautiful
Many people today want to have beautiful looks. But there is math hidden in beautiful human bodies. Measure (测量) the length from your head to your belly button (肚脐) and from your belly button to your feet. The ratio (比例) of these two numbers is always around 0.618. This is the golden ratio, which can be seen everywhere, like in nature, music and paintings.
In Chinese poems, we can also see the beauty of numbers, As Li Bai wrote, “I’ve sailed a thousand miles through Gorges in a day”, “My boat has left ten thousand mountains far away”. “A thousand miles in one day”, “ten thousand mountains”—the numbers show how fast Li Bai traveled and how happy he felt. Numbers give us freedom to imagine.
Curves are beautiful
Sine curves (正弦曲线) are beautiful. They go towards the two opposite directions on and on without ever ending. When you look at them, you may feel like standing by the sea and watching the waves slowly moving. The tangent curve (正切曲线) is like a waterfall. That’s really “dashing down three thousand feet from on high (飞流直下三千尺)”. If you do a math problem and get that curve, you’ll feel wonderful.
Formulas (公式) are beautiful
What’s more, you may not know Euler’s Formula: e^(iπ) +1=0. It’s beautiful, too. The number “e” is an irrational number (无理数), whose digits (位数) go on and on and never stop. “π” is also such an irrational number. However, when these two numbers come together, things become different. How amazing! Just as the Chinese-American mathematician Chern Shiing-shen said, “Math is fun!”
11. If the ratio of a thing is around 0.618, ________.
A. it will look like a human body B. it has a golden color
C. it can bring us a sense of beauty D. it is as long as a person’s leg
12. What can we know from the poem of Li Bai in this text?
A. Li Bai succeeded in solving math problems.
B. Li Bai was good at counting numbers.
C. Li Bai loved traveling by boat along the river.
D. Li Bai used numbers to show his feelings.
13. What does a sine curve look like?
A. B. C. D.
14. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. e^(iπ) isn’t an irrational number
B. the tangent curve is always three thousand feet high
C. we can often see the golden ratio in the drawings
D. Li Xing thinks math is difficult and boring
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Math is beautiful and interesting. B. The International Day of Math.
C. Math is hard and important D. The life of a math professor.
【答案】11. C 12. D 13. A 14. A 15. A

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据“the numbers show how fast Li Bai traveled and how happy he felt”可知,李白诗句中运用“千里”“万山”等数字来表现自己行船之快与心情之畅。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据“They go towards the two opposite directions on and on without ever ending. When you look at them, you may feel like standing by the sea and watching the waves slowly moving.”可知,正弦曲线的特征是它在两个相反方向上不断延伸,没有终点。呈周期性波浪起伏,与海浪、波纹相似。这与选项A的图形相符。故选A。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据“The number ‘e’ is an irrational number, whose digits go on and on and never stop. ‘π’ is also such an irrational number. However, when these two numbers come together, things become different.”可知,数字“e”是一个无理数,π也是这样一个无理数。然而,当这两个数字放在一起时,事情就变得不同了。可推断出, e^(iπ)不是无理数。选项A表述正确。故选A。

A medical breakthrough in China is giving new hope to people with spinal cord injuries (脊髓损伤). Scientists have created a brain-spinal chip (芯片) that allows paralyzed (瘫痪的) patients to move their legs, and even walk again.
The chip, only 1mm wide, is designed to be fitted into the brain and spinal cord. If the natural communication between the brain and muscles (肌肉) is lost, this chip becomes the bridge. When the chips work, they create a direct connection between the brain and muscles.
The results have been amazing. A 34-year-old man, paralyzed after a fall, could move his legs just one day after the operation on January 8, 2025. Two weeks later, he walked five meters with help. Three other patients had similar operations in February and March, all getting better within weeks. Even though the patients’ nervous systems were damaged (受损), the chips helped them walk again. This marks a big step in China's progress in medical science and it brings hope for over 3.7 million people in China.
“This is just the beginning,” Jia, the lead researcher, says. “With the technology, these people may one day leave wheelchairs behind after 3 to 5 years of training.”
Behind this achievement is a long journey of careful research and bold thinking. It took the researchers over 10 years to develop the chip. They tested it on animals first, and then on people. They faced many challenges, yet they never gave up. Step by step, they developed a system to reconnect the mind and body in ways once appearing only in science fiction.
As the chip continues to improve, it lights a new path forward—one built on science, shaped by care, and aimed toward a brighter future.
16. What do we know about the chips mentioned in the passage?
A. They are only as wide as 2 mm. B. They are fitted into the man’s arms.
C. They help the patients walk again. D. They improve the patients’ memory.
17. Which of the following meanings is suitable for the underlined word “bold”?
bold /bəʊld/ adj.
1. PERSON/ACTION not afraid of taking risks and making difficult decisions:
He had the ability to take bold imaginative decisions.
2. COLOURS/SHAPES very strong or bright so that you notice them:
Stripes are bold, bright, and fun to wear.
3. LINES/WRITING written or drawn in a very clear way:
The print should be bold and easy to read.
4. PRINTED LETTERS printed in letters that are darker and thicker than ordinary printed letters:
All the headings are in bold type.
(From the dictionary)
A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 4.
18. What is the writer’s main reason for writing this passage?
A. To recommend a science story. B. To report a pioneer doctor in medicine.
C. To compare different treatments. D. To introduce a new medical success.
19. What would be the best title of this passage?
A. China’s Chips Bring New Hope B. Future of China’s Medical Science
C. Science Fiction Changes Our Lives D. Challenges for Chinese Scientists
20. What can we infer from the passage about the future of the brain-spinal chip?
A. It will soon replace all other treatments for spinal cord injuries.
B. It may help more than 3.7 million Chinese patients leave wheelchairs eventually.
C. It will stop improving after solving the problem of paralysis.
D. It has been widely used in hospitals across China since 2025.
【答案】16. C 17. A 18. D 19. A 20. B

My 100 Days Without a Mobile Phone
When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone? Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time?
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (恼人的).
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted (分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes — changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused (专注的). Before, while doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that the urge (冲动) was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.

D

However after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes — changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
