What does the author tell us in Paragraph...? / What is the...paragraph mainly about?
What's the main idea/point of the passage? / The passage is mainly about...
Which of the following is the best title for the passage? / What would be the best title?
关注转折词(however, but, in fact等)后的句子。
Passage 1
While learning the science lessons, I used to get a doubt—why ears, nose, tongue and eyes should be called as special senses? The basic reason is that these are the channels through which we maintain contact with the surroundings. Though apparently it may feel like these are individual sensory organs, they do show some connectivity. Interestingly, our hearing is less sharp after we eat a heavy food. Isn't it good for a sound nap after a stomach-full meal? That does not mean we go deaf after a meal, but the hearing pitch does change after a heavy meal.
1.What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.The functions of sensory organs.
B.The reason why senses are called special.
C.The connection between hearing and eating.
D.The importance of maintaining contact with surroundings.
Passage 2
We are encountering real-world examples of how AI can harm human relations. As digital assistants such as Alexa or Siri become popular, we become accustomed to talking to them as though they were alive. Writing in these pages several years ago, Judith Shulevitz described how some of us are starting to treat them as friends and therapists. Shulevitz herself says she confesses things to Google Assistant that she wouldn't tell her husband. If we grow more comfortable talking to our devices about our secrets, what happens to our human marriages and friendships?
2.What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A.AI assistants are becoming increasingly popular.
B.People treat AI assistants as friends and therapists.
C.AI may have a negative impact on human relationships.
D.People share more secrets with AI than with their spouses.
Passage 3
Another factor is the growing concern over the fashion industry's effect on the environment. As The New York Times noted, the fashion industry is one of the largest polluters of clean water and three-fifths of clothes produced in a year end up in landfill. As there is more awareness of the climate crisis, younger people are pursuing more eco-friendly choices. Molly, 22, is one of them. Before she went to college, she used to frequent fast-fashion shops like Forever 21 and H&M. But after taking a class that focused on the environmental impact of clothing production, her preference changed. Now, she tries to shop in a way that is both sustainable and affordable: She shops second-hand.
3.What is the main idea of this paragraph?
A.The fashion industry causes serious pollution.
B.Young people are becoming more environmentally conscious.
C.Molly changed her shopping habits after taking a class.
D.Second-hand shopping is a sustainable and affordable option.
Passage 4
In today's fast-paced world, finding time to read can be challenging. Yet, so valuable is reading that experts recommend making it a daily habit. Only by setting aside dedicated time can we truly benefit from the wealth of knowledge books offer. Never before have we had such easy access to books. With e-readers and smartphones, thousands of titles are just a click away. But accessibility alone is not enough. Hard as it may be, we must resist the distractions of social media and other digital temptations.
4.What does the author mainly discuss in this paragraph?
A.The challenge of finding time to read.
B.The importance and value of reading.
C.The convenience of e-readers and smartphones.
D.The distractions caused by social media.
Passage 1
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted! At mile 3, I passed a sign:“GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!” By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again. By mile 21, I was starving! As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels, I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.
5.What does the story mainly tell us?
A.A man owes his success to his family support.
B.A winner is one with a great effort of will.
C.Failure is the mother of success.
D.One is never too old to learn.
Passage 2
In many cultures, how you respond to a compliment can say a lot about you. In Western countries, particularly in the United States, the typical response to a compliment is a simple “Thank you.” This is seen as accepting the compliment gracefully and showing confidence. In contrast, in many Asian cultures, such as China, Japan, and Korea, the common response is to deny or deflect the compliment. Phrases like “No, no, I don't deserve it” or “I still have a lot to learn” are considered polite and modest.
These differences can sometimes lead to misunderstandings. For example, an American visiting China might feel confused when a Chinese friend denies their compliment. They might think the friend is being insincere or rude. Similarly, a Chinese person in America might feel uncomfortable simply saying “thank you,” as it could feel boastful.
Understanding these cultural norms is essential for effective cross-cultural communication. When you receive a compliment, it's helpful to consider the cultural background of the person giving it. If you're unsure, a safe and polite response is to smile and say something like, “That's very kind of you to say.” This response is generally acceptable in most cultures.
6.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Compliments are important in all cultures.
B.Americans give more compliments than Asians.
C.Cultural differences affect how we respond to compliments.
D.It is rude to accept a compliment in Asian cultures.
Passage 3
There is a well-known saying: "Where there is a will, there is a way." Never has this been more true than in the story of Zhang Ming, a young man from a small village who overcame tremendous odds to become a successful entrepreneur.
Born into a poor family, Zhang had to work part-time while studying. Hard as his life was, he never complained. Instead, he focused on his goal: to create a better life for himself and his family. Only through sheer determination did he manage to finish college with excellent grades.
After graduation, he started a small business. Difficult as the initial years were, he persisted. Not until his fifth year in business did his company begin to turn a profit. "Never give up on your dreams," he often tells young people. "So important is perseverance that it can turn the impossible into possible."
Now his company employs over 500 people, many of whom come from similar backgrounds. Such is the impact one person can make when they refuse to give up.

Passage 4
Nature was Chen Rui's "childhood home". The 37-year-old researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Zoology was not able to talk until he was 4 years old because of the way his brain processes sensory information. This made him “strange” in some people's minds. So, he didn't have friends who were around his age. This led him to turn his attention to nonhuman things around him. He became fascinated by the world of insects.
"The happiest time of my childhood was in the farm fields," says Chen. "I squatted there, observing the activities of insects, including ants building their homes, grasshoppers nibbling grass and dragonflies flying low. I had so many questions about their activities and was full of curiosity about this world."
These experiences planted a seed in his heart. Decades later, he's a scholar who has engaged in life-science investigations in nearly 100 countries and regions on five continents. He has found around 100 new species, living and extinct, many of which are named after him.
8.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.A boy with a speech problem became a scientist.
B.Nature played a crucial role in shaping a scientist.
C.Observing insects can lead to scientific discoveries.
D.Childhood experiences determine future career choices.

Passage 1
We often expect immediate results, but in reality, the fruits of our efforts are often delayed. After weeks or months of working your tail off and not seeing any fruits of your labor, it's easy to feel beaten down.
Breakthrough moments are typically the result of many smaller actions that build up over time, creating the energy needed to bring about significant change. This pattern is evident everywhere. Cancer spends up to 80% of its life undetectable before it suddenly takes over the body in a matter of months. Bamboo spends the first five years barely visible above ground, using that time to develop a vast root system, before shooting up 15 meters in just six weeks.
Similarly, in the early and middle stages of any effort, there's often a "Valley of Disappointment". It can feel like you're not making progress, until you push through a critical point and unlock a new level of achievement.
9.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.The Valley of Disappointment
B.The Power of Immediate Results
C.Delayed Fruits: The Secret to Success
D.How Bamboo and Cancer Teach Us About Patience
Passage 2
In today's closely-connected world, silence is rare and undervalued. From morning to night, we are flooded with notifications, social media, and distractions. But at what cost? Constant engagement consumes our time and disturbs peace of mind. However, silence is of great significance nowadays.
Silence is as essential to mental health as nutrients are to physical well-being. We carefully choose what we eat but rarely consider the mental input we absorb. Just as our bodies need rest, our minds need quiet to slow down, process information, and restore cognitive energy.
We have grown so used to life's constant stimulation that stillness feels uncomfortable. However, absence of constant stimulation allows the brain to ease stress, enhance concentration and spark creativity.
10.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Multitasking: a Solution to Silence
B.Emptiness: a Limit for Possibilities
C.Silence: Well-being to Embrace
D.Connectivity: Space for Silence
Passage 3
Psychological science is full of interesting topics, many of which tell a coherent picture of human nature, but some of which create seemingly contradictory stories. A case in point is the tricky, and misunderstood, overlap between strength-based science and the research on narcissism.
There is now convincing evidence to show that narcissism is on the rise, especially in our youth. Some researchers say that about 25% of young people show symptoms of narcissism. The inflated ego of Generation Me is reflected in reality TV, celebrity worship, and out-of-control consumerism.
We are correct to be concerned about this phenomenon, but our fear that all kids are potential narcissists has caused an unhelpful counter-reaction to approaches that seek to make our children and teens feel good about themselves.
11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Teens' Psychology Research
B.Teens' Narcissism Diagnosis
C.Teens' Strength-based Approach
D.Teens' Confidence Misunderstood

Passage 1
I read somewhere that we spend a full third of our lives waiting. But where are we doing all of this waiting? I'm not sure I have experienced a third of my life in waiting. It may be a little dramatic, but I'm willing to bet that you, like me, spend a good amount of your life waiting. But the waiting is not the hardest part; it's what we do while we're waiting.
Take a moment to think of the last time you were forced to wait. Were you impatient and angry? Did you spend the time productively? Or did you use it as an opportunity to reflect and recharge?
I believe that the waiting is not the enemy; it's a gift. It gives us time to pause, to think, to reflect, and to recharge. The next time you find yourself waiting, try to see it as an opportunity rather than an inconvenience. Use that time to read a book, to write in a journal, or simply to sit and think. You might be surprised at what you discover.
17.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Waiting is an unavoidable part of life.
B.People spend too much time waiting.
C.Waiting can be a valuable opportunity.
D.How we wait matters more than the wait itself.
Passage 2
The idea of being able to walk on water has long interested humans greatly. But many scientists believe that it's impossible because humans are not designed for it. However, a recent discovery suggests that some animals can walk on water, and the key lies in surface tension.
Water striders are insects that can walk on water. They have long, thin legs that distribute their weight over a large area, allowing them to stay on the surface. But humans are too heavy to do this. So, is there any hope for humans? Some researchers think that if we could create special shoes that increase surface area, we might be able to walk on water. But for now, it remains a dream.
18.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The dream of walking on water.
B.How water striders walk on water.
C.The possibility of humans walking on water.
D.The role of surface tension in walking on water.
Passage 3
My neighbor Josie was a good cook and college professor. We have been good friends for many years. Each early morning, Josie would invite me to join her in walking and she would make breakfast for me as a reward! Josie planted a lovely garden. Every flower and vegetable made its debut once a year. There were so many kinds that I could not even recognize what was growing, and we had the freshest salads in the neighborhood all summer long!
Each evening, Josie and I would sit in front of the garden. We would have a chat, exchanging our world views as well as funny jokes. However, one evening, Josie was a “no-show”. Then I heard the ambulance and saw her husband and children running outside. Josie suffered a stroke.
Later, when I set eyes on her, she was in a wheelchair, covered in a thick blanket. She looked smaller and older than before. But how she chose to face it made me surprised. During the days when Josie had some strength, her husband wheeled her into the living room, and they watched old movies together. She called it “date time”. And during the most special days when Josie was doing well, her husband took her for a walk outside in her wheelchair. She called it “going on vacation”. Despite the fact that Josie was not expected to make a full recovery, they continued to watch movies and took lots of mini-vacations.
She is grateful for listening to her grandchildren telling stories to her, smelling a summer barbecue, sharing a laugh with her favorite neighbor, and being here for another day. I am thankful for her simple life lesson: Find the positive, and you will find your reason to live.
19.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.A story of friendship between neighbors.
B.How to deal with a serious illness.
C.The importance of family support.
D.Finding positivity in difficult times.
【答案】D

20.What can be inferred about Josie from the passage?
A.She had fully recovered from her stroke.
B.She was optimistic despite her condition.
C.She regretted not spending more time with family.
D.She was a professional gardener before her illness.
从Josie中风后仍将日常活动称为“date time”和“going on vacation”,以及作者对她的评价“how she chose to face it made me surprised”可知,她虽然身体不佳,但心态乐观。

But should you trust customer reviews when deciding what to purchase? And do these mysterious reviewers have your best interests in mind? Here's what you need to know.
Consumers today are skeptical, says Zach Pardes at review platform Trustpilot. "We live in a time when trust is completely under attack," Pardes says. "So people are reading reviews and consuming them more than ever before, but I think there is a healthy skepticism at times of what they're reading. Fake reviews do exist."
