Best Time to Visit China: Avoid Crowds
To be frank, China is a year-round tourist destination with no absolute “off-season”. Given its vast territory and complex geographical conditions, visitors can almost always find a destination that suits the time of year.
This passage aims to help you determine the most favorable periods for visiting major Chinese cities, guide you in matching your travel plans with seasonal features, and offer professional advice on climate and scenery across different seasons.
Autumn Is Best, Spring Comes Second
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) both enjoy pleasant weather, beautiful natural scenery, and fewer crowds.
Autumn is Ideal for Most Cities across China
There’s little rain in autumn, the summer heat fades, and outdoor sightseeing becomes much more comfortable.
The landscapes come alive with autumn leaf colors, such as the colorful forests of Jiuzhaigou, red maple leaves in Beijing’s Xiangshan Park, and golden ginkgo trees at the Forbidden City.
Spring is Beautiful with all the Blooming Flowers
You can see vibrant rapeseed fields in Luoping and Huangshan, jacaranda trees in Kunming, and peach blossoms in Tibet.
However, spring tends to have slightly more rain, particularly in southern cities like Guilin, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, but it’s usually light and won’t affect your travel too much.
Avoid Peak Holiday Crowds in Spring and Autumn
During spring and autumn, we recommend avoiding the following dates. These are major public holidays in China, when tourist sites are extremely crowded, and travel costs can rise by 50-100%:
Qingming Festival (April 3-5)
Labor Day (April 30- May 4)
National Day (September 30- October 6)
So, taking crowds, weather, and scenery into account, April, May, September and mid-to-late October stand out as the ideal travel months. For southern destinations like Yunnan and Guilin, early November also represents an excellent alternative.
21. What makes autumn an ideal travel time for most Chinese cities?
A. Low travel costs.
B. Various flowers in bloom.
C. No crowded tourist attractions.
D. Comfortable weather for sightseeing.
22. When is probably the best time to visit southern China?
A. Labor Day. B. Early November.
C. Hot summer days. D. Qingming Festival.
23. What can we learn from the text?
A. Summer is the best travel season in China.
B. Spring brings heavy rain to most southern cities.
C. Travel costs jump sharply during national holidays.
D. Jiuzhaigou is best-known for its spring flower scenery.

One Saturday in December, Anna Elf, the head of operations at Gothenburg City Library, just happened to walk by her workplace. Noticing that the door was open, she entered the library, and was astonished to see the heartwarming scene that people were using it like on a regular day.
It was scheduled to be closed for the New Year holiday. The people in the library behaved as usual. Many were sitting reading newspapers, some families were in the children’s section and others were searching for books on the computer.
It seemed that Elf’s colleagues had simply forgotten to lock the door, and because this popular library is usually open on Saturdays, visitors just assumed they could walk in. Elf called to check with her staff team, before announcing to the people present that the library was about to close. Then she expressed her regret for what had been done wrong and caused them a problem. It later turns out that 446 locals visited the city library borrowing a total of 246 books during the day. What’s remarkable is that people checked out their books through the library’s electronic self-service system, and that to date, all the books have been returned!
Many Swedes have reacted positively to this uplifting demonstration of local respect for the library, a center that can be seen as a sign of the community, and what the locals did has strengthened their sense of belonging in their community.
Elf said, “Nothing was destroyed. It’s amazing that Gothenburgers entered an empty library and treated it so lovingly.” The city leader has even suggested that this unusual Saturday serve as an accidental experiment to analyse the possibility of operating a totally automated library without staff.
24. What happened to Elf one Saturday?
A. She forgot to lock the library door.
B. She passed her workplace by chance.
C. She found her staff team working overtime.
D. She taught locals to use the self-service system.
25. Why did many locals go to the library that Saturday?
A. To read books as usual.
B. To return the overdue books.
C. To spread the community spirit.
D. To celebrate the New Year holiday.
26. What is the attitude of many Swedes toward the behavior of Gothenburgers?
A. They didn’t care about it.
B. They thought highly of it.
C. They decided to follow it.
D. They showed respect for it.
27. What does the author want to convey through the story?
A. The library should be open to locals.
B. The library’s automated operation is vital.
C. A library can bring out the best in people.
D. A library gives people a sense of belonging.

Teenagers have long been told that being active and taking part in various sports is good for their health. But new research suggests that too much sport for teenagers could negatively affect their well-being just as much as too little sport.
Researchers from Switzerland say their study suggests that 14 hours of physical activity a week is best for promoting good health in teenagers. However, they found that more than 14 hours appears to be detrimental to their health. To reach their findings, the researchers surveyed more than 1,245 teenagers aged between 16 and 20 from Switzerland.
All participants were required to answer questions on height and weight, sports practice, sports injuries and well-being. Their well-being was assessed (评估) using the World Health Organization (WHO) Well-Being Index, and the average well-being score for all participants was 17.
The researchers divided sports participation into low (0-3.5 hours a week), average (3.6-10.5 hours), high (10.6-17.5 hours), and very high (more than 17.5 hours). The researchers found that participants in the low and very high activity groups were more than twice as likely to have well-being scores below 13, compared with participants in the average group. The researchers found that the highest well-being scores were gotten by participants who carried out around 14 hours of physical activity a week, but exercising beyond 14 hours resulted in lower well-being scores.
Commenting on their findings, the researchers say physical activity has been connected with positive emotional well-being, reduced sadness, anxiety and stress disorders, and improved self-respect in teenagers.
The researchers suggest that their study stresses the importance for physicians caring for teenagers to check their level of sports practice and ask them about their well-being. Teenagers probably need a supportive and closer follow-up of their health and well-being. The findings can provide information for guideline groups who produce recommendations on sports practice for teenagers.
28. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Normal. B. Helpful.
C. Harmful. D. Necessary.
29. What is paragraph 4 mainly about concerning the study?
A. Its impact. B. Its findings.
C. Its limitations. D. Its application.
30. We can infer from the passage ______.
A. researchers are planning a follow-up study
B. guideline groups have set new rules for teenagers
C. how much teens exercise matters for their well-being
D. physicians should recommend sports practice for teens
31. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A storybook. B. A fitness diary.
C. A sports magazine. D. A fashion newspaper.
D
In the summer of 2021, an unusual event took place. More than 100 miles of Florida’s coast around Tampa Bay became an oxygen-depleted (缺氧的) zone containing dead fish along the nearby shoreline.
Much of the conversation around our climate crisis highlights the emission of greenhouse gases and their effect on warming and sea-level rise. We hear little about the effect of climate change on oxygen levels, particularly in oceans and lakes. But water without enough oxygen cannot support life. For the three billion people who depend on coastal fisheries for income, declining ocean oxygen levels are damaging.
As scientists focus on climate, we believe that oceanic oxygen levels are the next big victim of global warming. To stop the situation from worsening, we need to expand our attention to include the dangerous state of oceanic oxygen levels — the life-support system of our planet. We need to accelerate (加速) ocean-based climate solutions that boost oxygen. Examples include nature-based solutions such as those discussed at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) held in Glasgow.
Enhanced monitoring of oxygen and the establishment of an oxygen-accounting system are a must. Putting oxygen into the climate story motivates us to do the work to understand the deep systemic changes happening in our complex atmospheric and oceanic systems. We celebrated the return of humpback whales in recent years to an increasingly clean New York Harbor and Hudson River. However, dead fish blocked the Hudson in the summer as warmer waters carried less oxygen.
Ecosystem changes connected to physical and chemical system-level data may point the way to new approaches to climate solutions. It includes an enhanced understanding of the life-support system of our planet. Roughly 40 percent of the world’s people depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. If we do not save marine life from oxygen starvation, we starve ourselves.
32. What is the result of less ocean oxygen according to the text?
A. Sudden sea-level rises.
B. Shortage of water resources.
C. Increased deaths of sea animals.
D. Unusual climate change in coastal areas.
33. What do scientists advise to deal with ocean oxygen loss?
A. Repair life-supporting system.
B. Stop all ocean-related activities.
C. Build more coastal fishing areas.
D. Speed up oxygen-boosting solutions.
34. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Physical data can solve all climate problems.
B. Marine life is facing serious oxygen shortage.
C. Most people make a living in fishing industry.
D. Ocean life is closely linked to human survival.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Let Oceans Breathe. B. Protect Marine Life.
C. Fix the Climate Crisis. D. Clean the Ocean Water.

In a coastal village named Seaford, lived a brave young woman named Agatha. Everyone in Seaford knew her for her adventurous spirit. From the time she could walk, she would run towards the waves, feeling the sand under her feet and the sea spray on her face. She had a strong will and a kind heart. Agatha loved the ocean deeply and spent most days exploring the beaches and waters near her home.
One sunny morning, while walking along the shore, Agatha noticed something unusual. A group of seagulls were circling above the waves and making strange cries. Worried that something was wrong, she followed them. Her instinct (本能) told her there might be danger.
As she came near a high cliff (悬崖) , Agatha stopped in shock. On a narrow ledge (岩架), high above the rough waves, lay a young dolphin caught in a thick fishing net. Its body shone in the sunlight, but the net held it tightly. Every time the dolphin struggled, the net became tighter, leaving marks on its skin. Its tail moved weakly, as if asking for help, and its cries were filled with pain.
Agatha felt a strong sense of urgency. She knew she had to act quickly to save the dolphin before it became too tired or was swept away by the rising tide.

It is the centre of an important industry in the everyday lives of the British people. Tea is the British national drink. Every man, woman, and child over ten years of age has on average over four cups a day. Or some 1,500 cups annually. About 30 percent of the world’s exports of tea makes its way to London. And Britain is by far the largest importer of tea in the world. Now, in the second picture, you can see how tea is tasted in the Tea Trade Centre before it is sold. Here, different types of tea are tasted by skilled tea tasters, before they’re sold at each week’s tea sale. It’s amazing to see them at work. Over a hundred kinds of tea are laid out in a line on long tables. The tasters generally taste teas with milk, since that is how the majority of British people drink their tea.

The most common depiction (描绘) of the lion is the male specimen, and in fact, the role of the male lion — who is otherwise rather lazy, leaving the female lions to shoulder the ____58____ (lion) share of the hunting — is precisely to defend the pride, usually ____59____ (simple) by making his presence felt, often in the form of nothing more than a threatening roar. ____60____ animal seen by the Chinese people stemmed (起源于) from India, but was no less awe-inspiring.
In contrast ____61____ the Dragon Dance, generally the Lion Dance is performed with only 2 dancers, while the Dragon Dance ____62____ (require), at a minimum, 10 dancers. 【
故填The。
此处用固定短语in contrast to/with,意为“与……形成对比”。故填to/with。
故填what。
故填be staged。
故填where。

As Agatha got closer, the dolphin looked at her with sad eyes. She gently cut the net piece by piece, speaking softly to calm the frightened animal. Finally, the last rope fell away, and the dolphin was free. It let out a joyful cry and slipped into the water below. From the water, it jumped high into the air as if to say thank you. Watching it swim away, Agatha felt a warmth in her heart. She knew this was a day she would never forget.
