A
Finally came Wednesday! I walked onto campus feeling nervous even though I had walked these same grounds for two years because my junior high school is next door. Everything looked and felt different now that I was in senior high.
I looked at my schedule. First period— German. Our German teacher was very friendly and I liked her from the beginning. What I didn't like, though, was that I was surrounded (围住) by students from other grades, with only five familiar faces.
Then I had to walk all the way across campus and up three flights of stairs to get to my second period-biology. Our teacher's name is Ms. Compeau, and I think that she will teach us a lot this year because her words are very to the point. She also has her special way of saying "be quiet". She says "alligator". She explained that she is the king, or should I say queen, of the class because alligators are the king of the swamp (沼泽).
My third class was English. After having two periods without too much of a challenge, I began to feel good. However, the third period changed everything. Mr. V, my English teacher, told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing, but 40 essays? AP-level books? Now I was frightened. He also talked about how important it was to be focused (注意力集中的). Last year was not a very "focused" year for me. While doing homework, I was often talking on the phone, or busy with an online conversation. I planned on stepping it up this year because I wanted to stay an honor student.
1.What did the author mainly write about in this text?
A. Her new teachers. B. Her plan for the new year.
C. Her first day of senior high. D. Her schedule for Wednesday.
2.What should students do when hearing "alligator" from Ms.Compeau?
A. Sit still. B. Stop talking.
C. Listen to the teacher. D. Look at the blackboard.
3.How did the author find her first two classes?
A. Unattractive. B. Informative. C. Very tiring. D. Pretty easy.
4.Why did the author feel afraid during the third period?
A. She did poorly at school.
B. She didn't like the teacher.
C. She found the class challenging.
D. She couldn't concentrate on her work.

What is language for?
Some people seem to think it's for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words—the longer the lists, the better. However, it's wrong.
Language is for the exchange (交流) of ideas and information. It's meaningless knowing all about a language if you can't use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or fluently. They are afraid of making mistakes.
People shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote:“Foreigners often speak English too correctly." But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They’re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, but they make language. But a person can only make his own language. It can't make another people's language.
So Chinese learners can learn about grammar, but they shouldn't focus on it. They should put communication first. Understanding others correctly and expressing themselves freely matter more.
13.Generally,when an American or an Englishman speaks English,he ______.
A. never makes mistakes B. often makes mistakes
C. can't avoid making mistakes D. seldom cares about mistakes
14.If too many native speakers break a rule,______.
A. what they use will become right B. they are against the law
C. they should say sorry to others D. they will become heroes
15.Why Bernard Shaw is mentioned in this passage?

B. to prove that foreigners speak English too correctly and they never make mistakes.
C. to show that native speakers are not afraid of making mistakes

A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

So I signed up for the class and enjoyed studying something exciting and different on Monday evenings. I slowly got my head around tones after hours. Of repeating A, O and E with my classmates, writing the characters was my favorite part as I thought they were so beautiful. I would spend 20 minutes writing one sentence so that it was as neat as possible. A year later, I was given the opportunity to participate in the British council Chinese speaking competition. My group performed a play called Mulan and was selected to go to the national finals. This was my first achievement in my Chinese journey and all the effort paid off.

It is said that over 30% of the English language is made up of French words. Some of these words are the same as in French and are still used in the French language today. Others came from French but have become true English words as time has passed.
So why are there so many French words in the English language? Well, in the year 1066 in England, the Battle of Hastings took place. The English King, Harold, was defeated by William of Normandy in France. So a French man became the King of England He brought his language and his people over to England at that time. Once English people took power again though, the English language changed but it was influenced by this period when the King of England was French.
Lots of words used in English came from French and have evolved over the years and become more English. Examples are treasure, cup, letter, beef, abolish and claim. These are just a few examples of thousands.

M: You’ve probably heard the word “breakfast” before, but do you know where the word came from? Well, today we’ll be talking about the most common words for meals. Breakfast is the first meal of the day and it’s eaten in the morning. But where did it come from? Well, a long time ago, people used to say “break a fast”. Basically, “to fast” means not eating and when you “break a fast”, you stop fasting and eat. So, you fast all night long, and then eat in the morning. And this is why we say “breakfast” today. Dinner or supper, which one do you say? In the US, both are used for the evening meal. But in some parts of the world, there is a difference. Supper actually means the meal that you eat in the evening, and you’ll hear this more in southern parts of the US. On the other hand, dinner means the largest meal of the day. So, technically, you could say you had dinner at noon.

【原文】M: Hello! I’m Bob. Today I’d like to share my habits of learning English. First, learn three words for a day. There’s a tool called wholedic.com, where I often look up the words and their meanings. Then, write sentences using the words. Besides, use those words more in your English speaking during the day. Another of the things that I do is finding something to read in English every day for at least 15 minutes. This is the way that we can develop better grammar and listening comprehension. Do you know how many words are in English? A million? Do you need to learn all of them? No. Just learn as many as you can or at least the ones you meet more than once. In short, keep reading and learning. A single method or only a short period is less effective.

1. 从第四段中提到“Native speakers make mistakes and break rules”,可知把英语当做母语的人都会犯错误和打破规则,因此他们本身也避免不了犯错误,故选C。
2. 从第四段中“ But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They're English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. ”可知,当足够多的以英语为母语的人打破规则之后,规则就不再是规则,过去被认为错的英语表达就变成对的了。故选A。
3. 第四段引用“Bernard Shaw once wrote: “Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They're English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, but they make language. But a person can only make his own language. It can't make another people's language.”,是为了表达连本身说英语的人都会犯错误,作为一名外语学习者,更不要害怕犯错误。故选D。
