It was at a community meeting of women. I was comfortable as we visited and shared stories. And then, the hostess handed us each a piece of paper and a pencil and asked us to write down our New Year’s resolution.
My pencil wouldn’t write. Those around me smiled and wrote non-stop. I was blank and confused. I thought about my everyday life. Sometimes I am really tired and often wish there were more minutes in a day. I love my job and my family and friends. I work out and volunteer in the schools, in the community and for many organizations.
Everyone smiled as they placed their well-chosen words into a basket. My face turned red — I knew I had to write something. This same group of women promised to look at these resolutions at the same party, same place, same time… next year. So in a rush I wrote something down, folded it and folded it again, and put it in the basket.
“Say no.” That was all I wrote down.
That was the best resolution I had ever made. And, I kept it! I realized on that warm winter day that I had participated in a lot of ineffective socializing. I realized that I had stopped reading books, watching my favourite shows on television, baking fresh bread, or sitting on the couch relaxing. I resolved that I could still give to others, lead my busy fulfilling life, and also save time for myself.
Each woman left with a colorful sparkly hat to wear on New Year’s Eve and a hug for happiness in the New Year. I left, feeling heavy and wondering what they would think of me in one year when the paper with my brief words was unfolded.
On the way home, enjoying the birds singing and observing the colorful trees lining the street, I realized that it didn’t matter. What mattered was, for once, me taking care of me. I even said it out loud, “I need to take care of me!”
4. What were the women required to do at the meeting?
A. Recall their past experiences. B. Analyze their present situation.
C. Make decisions about their future. D. Find solutions to their problems.
5. How did the author feel before she wrote something?
A. Excited. B. Embarrassed. C. Surprised. D. Confident.
6. What will the author focus on in her life?
A. Social activities. B. Recharging and relaxing.
C. Wealth creation. D. Struggling and exploring.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To promote the value of volunteering. B. To emphasize the function of socializing.
C. To prove the benefits of relaxing oneself. D. To stress the necessity of having me-time.

“Being honest is a characteristic of Finnish culture— at least if we compare it to other cultures,” said Johannes Kananen, a lecturer at the Swedish School of Science at the University of Helsinki. “In English there is a saying that the truth is so valuable that it should be used sparingly. But in Finland, people speak the truth all the time.”
A few years ago, Reader’s Digest did a “Lost Wallet Test”, where their reporters “lost” 192wallets in cities across the world. Each wallet had $50 with contact information, family photos and business cards. Eleven out of every 12 wallets dropped in Helsinki, the Finnish capital, were returned to their owners, making it the most “honest” city of those tested.
“Truthfulness and honesty are greatly valued and respected,” Kananen said. He cites the example of the scandal (丑闻) that hit Finnish skiers when Finland hosted the FIS Nordic Ski Championship in 2001. Six top Finnish athletes got caught doping (服兴奋剂) and were disqualified. The scandal was covered in the national press as a matter of public shame, and there was a sense of collective embarrassment in the country.
“For the Finns, the worst thing about the doping scandal was not, however, the scandal itself,” reports an article published in The International Journal of the History of Sport. “The worst thing was that, along with the façade (假象) of honesty in sports in general, the myth of the honest, hardworking Finn came crashing down.”
Often, though, it comes down to simple matters of size. Gokul Srinivasan, a robotics engineer and entrepreneur living in Helsinki, explained that in a small community if someone is caught lying once, they won’t be considered trustworthy again. Though Finland is nearly three times bigger than England, it has just one-tenth its population—with most of the country’s 5.5 million residents concentrated in the urban centres in the south. As a result, there is a good chance that people in a specific field already know of each other.
8. What does the English saying probably mean?
A. Honesty is the best policy. B. The truth is hard to accept.
C. Tell the truth only when necessary. D. Try to be as honest as possible.
9. Why did Reader’s Digest organize the test?
A. To prove that Helsinki is the safest city. B. To encourage people to return lost items.
C. To compare honest levels in different cities. D. To know how people react to their lost wallets.
10. What did the Finns think of the doping incident?
A. It hurt their national pride. B. It was overstated by the media.
C. It destroyed the athletes’ health. D. It showed the need for stricter drug tests.
11. What does Gokul Srinivasan want to emphasize in the last paragraph?
A. The uneven distribution of Finland’s population. B. The advantages of living in a small community.
C. The differences between Finland and England. D. The reason for the Finns appreciating honesty.
D
In Somerville, Massachusetts just outside of Boston, everyone has a horror story about the rats (老鼠) .
Adaline Lining says they ruined her Christmas last year. She had received a delivery of Bartlett pears. “There were rats inside the box feasting on my Christmas pears. They are directly responsible for ruining Christmas,” she says. Then there’s Donene Williams who says that a couple years back, rats got under her deck, chewed through the subfloor, and nested in the insulation. And Andrew Jefferies can’t forget the noises he heard at his last apartment.
Now, the city of Somerville is trying to control these rats by introducing a safer form of rat birth control. Rats aren’t just annoying. They cause real problems. Rats can carry diseases, and they are also one of the leading causes of property damage. That’s because they chew through wires, fencing, decks, and even cinderblock.
Public servants Privett and Lipson have thrown all sorts of things at the problem, trying to keep rat numbers down. But homeowners and renters don’t always follow best practices like improving sanitation (卫生措施) and reducing the animals’ shelter and food options. Even attempts at poisoning can backfire when pets or birds of prey eat the rats or the poison and get sick or die.
For all these reasons, Somerville is trying something else — an anti-fertility (抑制生殖) chemical that targets the mature eggs in female rats. “It basically stops the pregnancy before it starts,” says Lipson, who’s overseeing the field trial of the product at several sites in Cambridge and Somerville.
The goal, however, is not to get rid of them completely. “That is not going to happen,” he says. “The birth control doesn’t lead to permanent infertility. Rather, the chemical acts on the rats only while it’s circulating in the bloodstream.” The idea is that if the overall population can be lowered, other efforts to minimize rat activity will be more successful.
At the very least, people who have tried this method will help encourage their neighbors to take other measures that help reduce rat numbers. “We really want to raise levels of knowledge and consciousness among residents and property owners,” Lipson adds. “When the level of discussion around rat control goes up, we expect there to be greater motivation to do the right thing.”
12. Why are the three people mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To demonstrate the trouble rats have caused for people.
B. To present people’s different attitudes towards rats.
C. To show the poor living conditions in Somerville.
D. To illustrate the reasons for rats’ frequent visits.
13. What does the underlined word “backfire” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Be beneficial. B. Be harmful. C. Be necessary. D. Be possible.
14. What does Lipson appeal for in the last paragraph?
A. Individual donations. B. Government support.
C. More effective solutions. D. Growing public awareness.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Massachusetts City Aims to Remove Rats
B. Public Servants Try to Control Rat Population
C. Too Many Rats? Birth Control Is One City’s Answer
D. Tired of Rats? A Chemical Will Kill Them for Good

You’ll only get the good results from your exercise if you rest well and eat healthy food. The health industry wants to sell you many products to help with this, like fitness tools and nutrition pills. ____16____
Rest is the most important thing for recovering from exercise and daily life, and sleep is the key to rest. ____17____ Studies show that people who sleep and get up at the same time every day sleep better and feel more energetic. This is because your bodies work on a 24-hour cycle. If this cycle is broken, you may get sick more easily or feel bad mentally.
Most experts advise you not to eat processed and overly-packaged prepared foods, which often makes eating feel like a chore. ____18____ So stop eating these foods. Instead, eat more vegetables, grains, meat, fish or plant-based proteins that you like and that are fresh.
____19____ Researchers compared two diets: one with processed foods (factory-made, ready-to-eat food) and one with natural whole foods. The two diets had the same nutrients, but people who ate processed foods for two weeks gained weight. A better way is to eat natural, unprocessed foods to feel full and satisfied. The study found people thought both foods tasted good, but still ate more processed foods without realizing it.
The good news is that natural whole foods can taste really good if you cook them simply. Zachary Knight, a professor who studies hunger, says, “Arrange your life so you don’t have to always see processed food and try hard to say no to them.” ____20____ That way, natural whole foods will become easy snacks.
A. However, it’s best to start with some basics.
B. Have more processed foods when you are sleepy.
C. And a foundation for better rest is, simply, routine.
D. One landmark study provides some insight as to why.
E. Whole foods diet is not so reasonable in some studies.
F. Besides, prepared foods may disturb your sense of hunger.
G. That means we had better have healthier foods close at hand.

Sure, as a child, I made mud patties and loved to play in the sandbox and build sandcastles at the beach, but at fifty-three years old I couldn’t imagine myself playing in the dirt, much less mud. The thought of getting wet in mud and struggling through obstacles felt daunting (使人畏惧的) and far from my daily routine.
It started so casually. Six months earlier, while we were warming up for a workout, the trainer at my gym announced that she was signing up for the Mud Girl Run, a 5km obstacle race dedicated to women, with money going to breast cancer research. She asked if anyone wanted to join her team.
I really didn’t know much about it. My first response was just to keep my head down, as clearly she wasn’t directing the question at me. After all, I complained each time we were told to run a simple lap in the parking lot. Obviously, she didn’t care that I was ignoring the conversation because suddenly she singled me out, directly asking if I was going to sign up.
My response was, “I’ll have to check my calendar.”
After being a member of her gym for over a year, she seemed to know me too well and replied, “You don’t have anything on your calendar six months from now. Didn’t you just tell me you were working on a book about getting out of your comfort zone and saying yes to new opportunities?”
She had a point, and I did envy those who were willing to commit to trying new things. Still, I spent the next few months coming up with every excuse I could to cancel. It was around the same time that a magazine had scheduled a Get Out of Your Comfort Zone online party, during which story contributors would meet each other online. I would attend the party since I was a regular contributor to it.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

I’m Li Hua, the head of the school English Club. I’m writing to invite you to record a spoken English demonstration video for us, and we’d be really grateful for your kind help.
The video needs to be about 3 — 5 minutes long. We hope it’s on daily topics like weekend activities or travel experiences, which is easy for us to follow, practice and remember useful sentences. Could you finish it by next Friday if it’s convenient? Your accurate pronunciation and natural expression are perfect examples for us.
Please let us know if you have any questions. Looking forward to your reply!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】 During the party, the contributors began to share the new things they tried. One learned rock climbing in her fifties despite a fear of heights, and another took up painting even though she thought she had no talent. All of them talked about the fear at first, and also the joy of pushing past it. Listening to their stories, I felt ashamed. I’d been writing about stepping out of the comfort zone, yet I was scared of a little mud. Their courage touched me, and I messaged my trainer right then: I’m in for the Mud Girl Run. It wasn’t just a race — it was exactly the challenge I needed to walk the talk.
The day of the race came and I got up very early in the morning. Arriving at the race, I could not help but feel the excitement of being a part of a group of crazy women. My trainer waved me over, and as I joined the crowd, my fear softened. The race began! I climbed, crawled, and pulled myself through each obstacle. Every time I completed one, I felt a new strength growing inside me. When I finally saw the finish line, a wave of excitement washed over me. I made it! At fifty-three, I rediscovered the joy of playing and found a fiercer self, proving that the greatest adventures lie just outside our comfort zone.
