If you’re looking for a truly original country to visit, then Myanmar is the place. Whether you are looking for culture, history, nature, or cuisine, you will find a place to suit your taste here. Below are four popular tourist destinations in Myanmar.
Yangon
Yangon has a large population, but the city doesn’t seem crowded. There are trees everywhere, which gives it a totally different feel from other Asian cities. At night, Yangon’s wide streets come alive with stalls (货摊) selling delicious food. The most famous temple is the gold-plated Shwedagon Paya. The colonial architecture of the Strand Hotel is another great sight.
Mandalay
Picturesque Mandalay is famous for being the old royal capital of Myanmar. In the past, Burmese kings would have lived in the city and you can still see some of their palaces in evidence. Mandalay is also known for its Chinese and Indian immigrants. One of the best things to do here is to spend time enjoying the varied cuisines(菜肴)on offer. Its scenic mountains and beautiful waterfalls are what visitors should not miss.
Bagan
Travelers with a passion for Buddhist temples should have a field day in Bagan, since it contains the most of these in the world. The most popular destination in Bagan was the capital of the First Burmese Empire from the 9th to the 13th centuries. Today the site is still home to thousands of temples and pagodas, including the famous Ananda Temple with its sparkling gold spires.
Kalaw
If you want to explore the rural and natural beauty of Myanmar, Kalaw is a must-go place. When trekking (长途跋涉) through the hills of Kalaw, you will experience the diverse landscapes, cultures, and lifestyles of the local people, as well as enjoy the fresh air and scenic views. Sandesh Kadur, a National Geographic Explorer, has spent 25 years documenting (记录) rare wildlife, transforming his childhood passion into a mission to protect Earth’s fragile (脆弱的) ecosystems.
When he was young, Kadur was fascinated by Jim Corbett’s tales of big cats. Inspired, he once cycled into the jungle with a friend to observe big cats at a watering hole. At night, they really saw a big cat. Bathed in moonlight. he realized his life’s goal: to capture and share nature’s wonders
At 12, he borrowed his father's camera — a “magic box” that froze time. His father, an entomologist(昆虫学家) got him looking at the small things. So he began intentionally focusing his lens on small insects, trying to understand what he was looking at. He would develop the camera film weeks later, annotating (注释) the settings and reattempting the shots. As he grew older, his love for nature, however, conflicted with academics. Failing high school, he moved to Brownsville, Texas to study hotel management — a choice that unexpectedly refueled his love for storytelling.
In Brownsville, Kadur explored Mexico’s cloud forests and landed a job as a jungle tour guide. There, he met filmmaker John Bax, who introduced him to documentary work. When they embarked on a documentary project together, Bax withdrew from it. Kadur then 19 and untrained in film, pursued the project on his own. He spent three years filming India’s Western Ghats, capturing species like the “smoke cat” for the first time. His debut film, Sahyadris: Mountains of the Monsoon, brought the Western Ghats’ biodiversity into attention, aiding its 2012 UNESCO World Heritage status.
Through visual storytelling, Kadur offers his audiences glimpses into a rarely-seen natural world, urging them to protect its delicate inhabitants. “Visual art has conveyed stories for millennia. Now we’re doing that with technology, and it will continue to advance.” said Kadur, “I think the impact of storytelling can last a lifetime. It can last generations.”
4. What led Kadur into nature?
A. Fever for big cats. B. Love for adventure.
C. Curiosity about filming. D. Fascination with Jim's tales
5. What was his father’s influence on him?
A. Teaching him photography skills. B. Introducing him to documentary work.
C. Helping him regain love for storytelling. D. Arousing his curiosity about scientific details.
6. What is Kadur’s opinion about visual storytelling?
A. It well entertains audiences. B. It serves as a bridge for nature.
C. Its value lies in expression skills. D. Its impact depends on technology.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Kadur?
A. Passionate and devoted. B. Talented and ambitious.
C. Independent and committed. D. Responsible and generous.

One of Twitter’s main characters recently was a man who chose to keep his middle seat between a couple on a flight instead of moving to the side. The situation raised some questions: Who are these middle-seat lovers? What do they want?
Many of the thousands of replies suggested that the majority of the flying public cannot understand why someone would ever choose the middle over a window or an aisle (走廊). But among the majority appeared a few people who endorse middle seats. “In the middle seat I don’t feel I should lean one way or another and generally sit pretty comfortably,” one person wrote. Another added: “I’m not getting hit by someone walking down the aisle or luggage either.”
Kyle Burke, in Florida, said on Twitter that he usually exchanged seats when asked. “I didn’t want to sit between a couple that were upset with me,” he told The Washington Post. At 6-foot-7, Burke, 41, said he didn’t fit well in plane seats, anyway. So, he preferred the middle, which gives him double chance of having a chatty neighbor.
Frederick resident Samantha Jones told The Post by email that she usually chose the middle seat when traveling alone. As a mother of three, “Having personal space is a far-off memory.” she said. “Middle seats have the least amount of responsibility,” she wrote. “I don’t control the window shade and only have to get by one person to get out or to go to the bathroom.”
Despite the few fans, middle seats are still not likely to get much respect. “There’s nothing good in the middle seat,” Scott McCartney, the writer of the journal Middle Seat said. “The position’s infamy (臭名昭著) was part of the reason for the journal’s name.” He added: “People really care about the ‘middle seat’, so they are more likely to pick up this magazine on seeing it.”
8. How does the author start the text?
A. By challenging a common belief. B. By raising a couple’s questions.
C. By comparing travelers’ preferences. D. By presenting an unusual seat choice.
9. What does the underlined word “endorse” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Exchange. B. Resist. C. Support. D. Indicate.
10. Why does Samantha prefer the middle seat?
A. It provides larger space. B. It reduces unnecessary trouble.
C. It avoids family responsibilities. D. It offers networking opportunities.
11. Why did Scott choose “Middle Seat” as the name of his journal?
A. To catch readers’ eyes. B. To voice his own taste.
C. To make people think. D. To urge airlines to change.
D
Weighted blankets(毯子), which have been advertised as a solution to anxiety and poor sleep, have gone from a not-well-known tool to a common wellness must-have, with producers saying they’ll bring better sleep and less stress to people. But do they keep these promises?
Sleep researchers have used weighted blankets since the 1970s to help children with autism, a kind of mental problem, and adults with sensory problems. They appeared on the market in the1990s, but most were only used by people with special needs.
Things changed a lot in recent years. Companies started focusing on what they call “people who feel anxious sometimes”— basically anyone having trouble with modern life’s stress. The ads worked: Time magazine even said the weighted blanket was one of the top 50 “inventions” of 2018.
The idea behind weighted blankets is simple. They usually weigh 2 to 13 kilograms— around 10% of your body weight. They use what occupational therapists call “deep pressure stimulation (压力刺激)”. The soft, steady pressure on your body makes you feel like being held.
A study of 120 psychiatric patients found that weighted blankets improved sleep quality over four weeks in people with some health problems, like depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and ADHD. Smaller studies have shown similar results. One found that 63% of adults reported lower anxiety after just five minutes under a weighted blanket, while another study of psychiatric patients found 60% experienced reduced anxiety during their hospital stay.
However, these studies all focused on people with mental health conditions, not the general population that companies are now focusing on. There’s not enough evidence (证据) that they do good to common users who don’t have mental health problems.
This doesn’t mean weighted blankets are totally useless for healthy people. Shift workers— who have to sleep during the day— might find them helpful. They can fight the known health problems from irregular schedules. Healthcare workers, firefighters and pilots need short, useful naps. These blankets could help them fall asleep faster.
If a weighted blanket makes you feel calmer and sleep better, even if it doesn’t work like producers say, that’s still good. Just make sure you know what you’re buying.
12. What do weighted blankets promise to solve?
A. Sleeplessness. B. Weight problems. C. Headache. D. Forgetfulness.
13. How does the weighted blanket work?
A. By fixing users’ sleeping time. B. By working out users’ body weight.
C. By bringing users a pleasant feeling. D. By copying the feeling of sleeping in bed.
14. What does the author think of weighted blankets?
A. They are useless for healthy people.
B. They will have a very hopeful future ahead.
C. They are helpful to certain groups of people.
D. They may cause some mental health problems.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Science Behind Deep Pressure
B. Who gets Most from Weighted Blankets?
C. Weighted Blankets: From Special Needs to Daily Use
D. Do Weighted Blankets Really Live Up to Their Wellness Promises?
第二节 七选五 (共 5 小题; 每小题 2.5 分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从所给的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
When traveling, many find themselves in places where the local language is unfamiliar. Once, travelers relied on phrasebooks, but the spread of English has reduced this need. However, most people worldwide still don’t speak English. 16 Increasingly, travelers use free translation apps. These apps allow users to speak into their phones and receive spoken translations almost instantly, bridging language gaps effectively.
17 Google Translate, a well-known name, often makes mistakes. For instance, translating “my wife is gluten-free (不能吃面筋)” into French or Italian as “my wife is without gluten” misses the intended meaning. However, competitors offer better choices. 18 It offers no direct translations, but copies a native speaker’s input.
While AI tools make travel easier, some worry they discourage language learning. Douglas Hofstadter, a language expert, argues that relying on machines for communication makes people unable to gain meaningful experiences and accomplishments. However, others believe most people don’t need fluency for relaxing travel. 19
As AI translation gains popularity, people may divide into two groups: those eager to learn languages for cultural experience and mental challenge, and those who see it as unnecessary effort. This issue is particularly pressing for English speakers, as many schools in English-speaking countries reduce foreign language programs. 20 Direct communication, even if imperfect, brings up deeper connections than relying on technology.
A. Yet, these tools aren’t perfect.
B. And they prefer the convenience of AI.
C. It is a paraphrase rather than a translation.
D. Travel has long been a motivator for study.
E. Despite this, the social significance of language remains.
F. This leads them to rely on gestures, patience, or technology.
G. ChatGPT stands out by creating more natural-sounding paraphrases.

Dear David,
I'm glad to share my experience of an after-class activity I joined since entering high school.
Last month, I participated in the school's English Drama Club. We chose the play Romeo and Juliet and spent weeks rehearsing. I played a minor role, but every rehearsal taught me to express emotions through dialogue and body language. Performing on stage boosted my confidence and improved my English pronunciation.
Moreover, working with classmates taught me teamwork and patience. Now I'm more outgoing and enjoy public speaking. This activity has been a wonderful way to learn beyond the classroom.
What about you? Have you joined any interesting clubs? Looking forward to your reply.
