Ahmed Muhammad, an 18-year-old high school student from California, realized how difficult it can be for some kids to engage in science. He discovered this when taking care of his younger cousins. One day, he asked them whether they wanted to do a science experiment, but their response was disappointing.
“Every time I take care of them, we usually play chess, play video games, or watch TV. But when I tried to get them to do science experiments, they said, ‘No, I hate science. I’m not good at it,’” Muhammad recalled. This moment inspired him to create a non-profit organization called “Kits Cubed”, which was intended to expose kids to science in a fun, affordable and accessible way.
“I went back to my room, pulled out some science books, and started researching online. I came up with a few science experiments that could be done at home using everyday, inexpensive materials, and the kids loved them,” Muhammad said.
Seeing how happy his cousins were, he realized that other kids could benefit from the same experience. “I noticed that schools often lacked science experiments, and I thought kids needed access to science kits,” Muhammad explained.
He then took $200 he had saved up to create a website and started producing science kits for sale, with the profit donated to children in need. “I had enough money to build the website and make about 10–15 kits. Initially, my objective was just to see my cousins happy. I wanted to share that joy with more kids,” Muhammad said.
Today, Muhammad has been accepted into Stanford University, and he is proud to have changed his cousins’ view on science while inspiring other kids.
24. What inspired Muhammad to create “Kits Cubed”?
A. His cousins’ lack of interest in science.
B. His passion for doing science experiments.
C. His inability to get along well with his cousins.
D. His desire to help schools with science resources.
25. Why did Muhammad produce science kits at the beginning?
A. To donate them to schools. B. To make his cousins happy.
C. To run his website smoothly. D. To promote scientific research.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Muhammad?
A. Optimistic. B. Creative. C. Accessible. D. Modest.
27. Which can be the best title for this passage?
A. “Kits Cubed” Helps Kids in Need B. Science Experiments Matter to Kids
C. Science Kits Bring Happiness to Kids D. Teen Inspires Kids’ Curiosity in Science

Lab-grown chicken is finally making its way onto menus in the United States. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recently given permission for selling cultured (培养的) meat produced by GOOD Meat and UPSIDE Foods, marking a significant breakthrough for the cultured meat industry. These companies are able to grow small amounts of chicken cells into meat without the need for traditional slaughter (屠宰). However, it’s important to note that this permission is currently limited to chicken products. Both companies still require additional permission to market cell-cultured beef, pork or seafood.
Concerns have been growing among Americans about traditional meat production, which contributes to about 14.5% of global carbon emissions and can encourage antibiotic-resistant (耐抗生素的) bacteria growth. Additionally, it pollutes waterways with animal waste. And the animals themselves often live relatively short lives in cages. “The current methods of traditional meat production are at the root of many environmental issues,” says GOOD Meat CEO Josh Tetrick.
Despite these concerns, meat remains a significant part of many people’s diets due to cultural, traditional and nutritional reasons. Cultured meat companies position themselves as producing sustainable and proper meat, aiming to provide meat lovers with a guilt-free choice that satisfies their desire for tasty food.
The production process for lab-grown meat is relatively straightforward, with the main challenge lying in building sufficient production facilities. Both companies, now armed with USDA and FDA permission, can focus on expanding to produce enough cell-cultured meat to meet the demand. At the beginning, lab-grown chicken will only be available at select restaurants, including Bar Crenn in San Francisco and a restaurant owned by chef José Andrés in Washington.
28. What can be known about lab-grown chicken?
A. It is grown from chicken cells. B. It grows from artificial materials.
C. It is cheap to produce and process. D. It tastes better than regular chicken.
29. What is the problem with traditional meat production?
A. Animals live in crowded cages. B. Consumer demand can’t be met.
C. The procedure is not eco-friendly. D. It is considered outdated by factories.
30. What are cultured meat companies going to do?
A. Improve the meat taste. B. Gain government approval.
C. Cooperate with restaurants. D. Increase their productivity.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. Cultured meat permitted for sale in the US. B. A breakthrough in cultured meat technology.
C. The impact of cultured meat on eating habits. D. Environmental issues caused by meat production.
D
Have you ever wondered how scientists figure out things about our world-like how stars are born, live, and eventually die? It might seem impossible for humans, who live barely100 years, to understand stars that live for billions of years. But scientists try anyway!
Last week I attended a meeting in Hong Kong where about 60 scientists from around the world gathered to discuss how stars like our sun end their lives. It was a small meeting, and what struck me most was that the scientists argued over data gathered by complex machines that watch the skies for us. But these weren’t the kind of arguments you see on TV or in a debate club. Instead, they were careful discussions focused on uncovering facts and understanding evidence. They were sharp, focused, and all about getting closer to the truth.
In school, you might have learned about the scientific method: make a guess, test it with an experiment, and decide if the guess is right or wrong based on the results. That sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it? But the real world of science is a lot messier because it involves people--and people argue.
At the meeting, we argued about everything. First, we debated whether our telescopes were working as they should. Then, we argued about the data they collected. Did we understand the patterns of light coming from stars correctly? Finally, we debated the theories we used to make sense of the data. Were we missing something important about how stars change over time?
All this arguing might sound futile, as if it is pointless, but it’s actually how science moves forward. By challenging each other, scientists help sort out which ideas are worth exploring and which ones don’t make sense. No single person has all the answers, but together, scientists can figure out what questions really matter.
Here’s the most important thing about science: in the end, it’s not about who argues the best. It’s about the data. For example, when scientists debated whether the earth orbits the sun, it was the evidence from nature that finally settled the argument. That’s why science is so powerful.
32. What impressed the author greatly at the meeting?
A. Data collection. B. People’s courage.
C. Lifecycles of the stars. D. The scientists’ arguments.
33. Why is the scientific method in school mentioned?
A. To explain the formula.
B. To show real science is more complex.
C. To highlight its importance for students.
D. To involve readers in the previous schooling.
34. What does the underlined word in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Reasonable. B. Satisfactory. C. Fruitless. D. Sharp.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Nature has the final say. B. Date collection is hard.
C. Scientists should debate more. D. Human creativity is unlimited.

第二节 (满分 25 分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One afternoon, Emma and I were walking home from school, chatting about our day. Emma, with her curious eyes shining, asked me about my friendship with Lucy. Without thinking, I said, “I only hung out with Lucy because she wanted me to, but I didn’t really want to be friends with her. She was kind of boring.”
Unluckily, I didn’t know Lucy was nearby. When I looked up, she was right there, having heard everything. Her face turned pale, and her eyes got big with surprise. She didn’t say anything and ran off. Emma and I just stood there, feeling sorry and embarrassed. I knew I should go after Lucy and say sorry, but I was too shocked to move. Emma’s face turned red too. We walked home without talking, and it felt like our steps were getting heavier.
The next days were hard. I felt really bad about what I said and wanted to fix things with Lucy. I needed to say sorry. But what should I say? Even though I didn’t mean to, I hurt Lucy’s feelings. Every time I saw her at school, I looked away quickly.
Then, something interesting happened in our speaking class. On Tuesday, Mrs. Julia said we would do pre-class speeches. She had written our topics on small pieces of paper and put them in a box. We had to pick one without knowing what it was. I was a bit nervous. When I reached into the box, I pulled out a paper that said, “Tell your most embarrassing moment.” My heart was beating fast. It felt like I was given a chance to make things right.
I spent the next few days practicing my speech, trying to find the right words to apologize to Lucy. I wanted to be sincere and show her I was sorry. When the day of the speech came, I was still nervous, but I knew it was important to face my mistake. I stood in front of the class, took a deep breath, and began to share my story, hoping it would help me and Lucy move forward.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Knowing what I had to say, I calmed myself down and walked to the stage.

【答案】28. A 29. C 30. D 31. A

Have you ever wondered how scientists figure out things about our world-like how stars are born, live, and eventually die? It might seem impossible for humans, who live barely100 years, to understand stars that live for billions of years. But scientists try anyway!
Last week, I attended a meeting in Hong Kong where about 60 scientists from around the world gathered to discuss how stars like our sun end their lives.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. A

【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“All this arguing might sound futile, as if it is pointless, but it’s actually how science moves forward.(所有这些争论可能听起来futile,好像毫无意义,但实际上这就是科学前进的方式)”中“as if it is pointless”可推知,“futile”的意思是“徒劳的,无用的”,与“Fruitless”同义。故选C项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中“Here’s the most important thing about science: in the end, it’s not about who argues the best. It’s about the data. For example, when scientists debated whether the earth orbits the sun, it was the evidence from nature that finally settled the argument.(关于科学,最重要的一点是:最终,重要的不是谁辩论得最好。重要的是数据。例如,当科学家们争论地球是否绕着太阳转时,是来自大自然的证据最终解决了这场争论)”可知,最后一段主要说明在科学中,重要的是数据,要依靠来自大自然的证据来解决问题,即自然才有最终的决定权。故选A项。

【答案】 Beautiful Motherland in My Picture
In the photography competition themed “Beautiful Motherland”, my entry won the first prize!
I submitted a photo of a vast golden wheat field under the setting sun. The gentle breeze made the wheat waves ripple, and the warm glow of the setting sun painted the entire field with a layer of golden light. This scene reminded me of the hardworking farmers and their bountiful harvest.
I am extremely thrilled and honored to have won the award. This contest has not only allowed me to show the beauty of our motherland but also made me appreciate the charm of nature and the efforts of our people. It has inspired me to keep observing and recording the wonderful moments of our country with my camera.

That day marked a turning point.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1
Knowing what I had to say, I calmed myself down and walked to the stage. I looked directly at Lucy, my voice steady but sincere. “Last week, I said something terrible about my friend Lucy behind her back, and she heard every word,” I admitted. “I was thoughtless and cruel, and I hurt her deeply. Lucy, you’re kind, funny, and a true friend—I never meant to hurt you. I’m so sorry.” The class fell quiet, and I saw Lucy’s eyes glisten with tears as she nodded slightly.
Paragraph 2
That day marked a turning point. After class, Lucy came up to me with a soft smile. “Thank you for apologizing publicly,” she said. “I was really hurt, but I know you didn’t mean it.” We hugged tightly, and the awkwardness between us vanished. Emma also apologized for not stopping me that day. From then on, our friendship grew stronger—we laughed more, listened better, and learned to value honesty. I realized that facing mistakes bravely, not hiding from them, is the key to keeping true friendships.
