B During the time when Theodor Geisel was working as a children’s book author, a popular primer (初级读本) for young children involved the story of two characters named Dick and Jane. However, Dick and Jane were boring. Consequently, these boring characters kept children from learning how to read. Writer John Hershey described the problem in a1954 article in Life magazine. Upon reading it, William Spaulding, the director of Houghton Mifflin, decided to invite Geisel to create an exciting children’s book. Geisel thought, “No sweat”. But in fact, he did sweat for a year and a half. Accustomed to inventing words at his leisure in his previous books, the imaginative author underestimated how difficult it would be to limit his vocabulary to around200 words. He stared at Spaulding’s word list for a year but got nothing. Out of frustration, he finally chose the first two words that rhymed as the title. Cat and hat were what he found. He next worked on what the cat would look like and how he would act. As Geisel wrote, his cat was shaped and inspired by two other cartoon cats he had admired since childhood. The first was from comic Krazy Kat. Geisel’s cat would channel Krazy’s physical appearance. As for its personality, Geisel looked to another cartoon cat for inspiration: Felix the Cat. Felix was adventurous and Geisel’s cat would behave with a similar confidence. Now that he had a main character, finding things for that character to do within the limitation of the word list was like putting his cat in a straitjacket. As Geisel slowly wrote and rewrote The Cat in the Hat throughout1956, he figured out a few tricks to help his writing. He would repeat words or phrases, which gave his works a distinct and regular rhythm that helped young readers learn words through look-say repetition. Upon publication in1957, The Cat in the Hat was an instant hit and made Geisel a world famous children’s book author. 24. What made it hard for Geisel to create his story? A. The restriction of word selections. B. Criticisms from another writer. C. The publisher’s demand for quality. D. The change of his writing topic. 25. What do we know about the cat in Geisel’s book? A. It is as confident as Krazy. B. It is dressed in a straitjacket. C. It takes after Felix in appearance. D. It takes on features of two cartoon cats. 26. Which of the following best describes the language in The Cat in the Hat? A. Varied and plain. B. Simple but insightful. C. Repetitive and rhythmic. D. Limited but well-organized. 27. What is the text mainly about? A. The creation of cats in children’s books. B. The story behind a famous children’s book. C. A well-known writer in children’s literature. D. Difficulties and skills in writing a children’s book. C A group of scientists from the University of Kitakyushu in Japan has come up with an unusual solution to a messy problem. They’ve taken dirty diapers (尿布), and used them to replace some of the sand needed to build a house with concrete. Concrete is one of the most common building materials in the world. It’s used to construct many things, including roads, sidewalks, and buildings. Concrete is usually made by mixing together sand, water, and cement (水泥). But making concrete creates a lot of pollution. And it uses a lot of sand. Mining for sand creates other problems for the environment. Siswanti Zuraida had an unusual idea. What if some of the sand in concrete could be replaced with used disposable diapers, which are frequently abandoned? In the US alone, over 8 billion pounds of them are cast aside each year. These end up taking up space in landfills. In some countries, dirty diapers can wind up in rivers and creeks. One 2018 study showed that bad diapers made up more than 20% of the trash pulled from waterways in 15 cities of Indonesia. So Ms. Zuraida and her team set out to study the problem. They collected used diapers, cleaned them up, and treated the diapers with chemicals to get rid of any bad germs. Then the diapers were dried and torn into small pieces that could be added to concrete. Overall, diapers could replace up to 8% of the sand used in the concrete needed to build a house. In the parts of a house that support a lot of weight, 10% of the sand could be replaced with shredded diapers. Ms. Zuraida and her team are excited about their results, but they realize there’s still a lot of work to be done. If diapers are really going to be used in concrete, someone will have to figure out how to safely collect, clean, and store lots and lots of used diapers. Perhaps the biggest challenge will be persuading people to use concrete made with diapers. What do you think? Is it time to change the house? 28. What does the underlined word “disposable” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Dried. B. Plastic. C. Throwaway. D. Unpleasant. 29. Why does the author list the figures in paragraph 3? A. To prove the study is trustworthy. B. To recommend scientists to seek key solutions. C. To show diapers are a huge source of pollution. D. To blame the governments for ignoring pollution. 30. What is the biggest challenge according to Zuraida? A. Collecting and storing large quantities of used diapers. B. Figuring out shares of diapers in concrete. C. Calculating the percentage of diapers in sand. D. Making people accept concrete with diapers. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. Diapers Will Replace Sand B. A Solution Shocks the Public C. Handle Diapers Effectively D. Build a House with Diapers D Why does social media cause feelings of loneliness and lack of confidence? Because instead of being real life, it is impression management, a way of marketing yourself, carefully choosing and filtering (过滤) the picture and words to put your best face forward. Online “friends” made through social media do not follow the normal psychological progression of friendship. You share neither physical time nor emotional conversations over the Internet. You simply communicate photographs and catchy posts to a diverse group of people whom you have “friended” or “followed” based on an accidental interaction. This is not to say that your social media friends can’t be real friends. They absolutely can, but the two are not the same. Generally speaking, there are no unfiltered or casually taken photos on our social media pages because it wouldn’t feel safe to be completely authentic (真实的) and vulnerable (易受伤的) with some of our “friends” whom we don’t actually know or with whom trust has yet to be built. Social media can certainly be an escape from the daily routines, but we must be cautious about the negative effects on a person’s overal psychological well-being. As humans, we are eager for social connection. Scrolling (滚动) through pages of pictures and comments, however, does not provide the same degree of fulfillment as face-to-face interactions do. Also, we tend to idealize others’ lives and compare our downfalls to their greatest accomplishments, ending in feelings of loneliness and lack of confidence. Social media can lead to unhealthy pursuit for perfection. Some people begin to attend certain events or travel to different places so that they can snap that “perfect” photo. However, pictures and posts should be byproducts of life’s treasured moments and fun times, not the planned and calculated image that one is putting out into cyberspace in an attempt to fill insecurities or unmet needs. Ultimately, social media has increased our ability to connect with various types of people all over the globe. It has opened doors for business and allowed us to stay connected to people whom we may not otherwise get to follow. However, social media should feel like a fun experience, not one that contributes to negative thoughts and feelings. If the latter is the case, increasing face to face time with trusted friends and minimizing time scrolling online will prove to be a reminder that your real social network is much more rewarding than any “like”, “follow” or “share” can be. 32. How does social media affect our life? A. It may improve our physical appearance. B. It may make us feel isolated and insecure. C. It may filter our negative impressions on others. D. It may enhance our communication skills. 33. Why do people post photos selectively on social media? A. They do not want to lose their followers. B. They are eager to become famous overnight. C. They do not find all their online friends trustworthy. D. They want to avoid offending any of their audience. 34. What do humans tend to do according to the passage? A. Have more face-to-face interactions. B. Exaggerate their life’s accomplishments. C Learn lessons from other people’s downfalls. D. Paint a rosy picture of other people’s lives. 35. What does the author advise when online experience becomes unpleasant? A. Stay connected to online friends for suggestions. B. Strengthen ties with real-life friends instead of online friends. C. Connect with various types of people all over the globe. D. Avoid negative thoughts and feelings through online pages. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下而短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Cheer up Your Friend The following tips will make your friend cheer up. I rushed to the upper floor to check out. There was nothing but a wet footprint on the floor. “What’s happening?” my mother asked. “Nothing, just the sound of lightning.” I knew something strange had happened, but I ignored it as my mother was suffering a cardiac (心脏的) disease. “We’d better close the windows. Maybe rain will pour down,” I showed a relaxing expression but thought back about that footprint. It was so familiar, but I could not remember where I had seen it. “David, can you help me take the cooking pot in the attic (阁楼)?” my mother requested. “Oh, please! I am afraid of the dark,” I answered. My mother said that I was like my father. Oh, you want to know what happened to my father? He was an engineer. Last month, he went to the oil platform in the middle of the sea at Jerteh, Terengganu. He said he went there for only 4 days. But 2 weeks had passed, and he still didn’t come back. My mother called the management office in Jerteh but was told they hadn’t seen him since they last saw him on his way to the seashore from the oil platform. Speaking of my father, my mother looked sad. “Today was our Anniversary Day, but he was missing.” But back to the main point. I investigated the footprint in my room. And when I looked up, the window was opened. I walked towards it and looked out. Nothing. I closed the window and lay down on my bed. “Ouch! What is this?” I asked myself. There was a small box on my bed. I wondered what was inside it. I opened the brown box. There was a necklace, made of pure gold. Why was there a gold necklace in my room? Suddenly, my room became dark. My terrible fear towards the darkness was to the limit. I grabbed a flashlight and turned it on. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Just at that time, the house bell rang. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I shouted excitedly, and called my mum down. 56. obeying 57. a 58. and 59. became 60. to hang 61. in 62. who 63. extremely 64. has been regarded 65. length 应用文写作 Dear Frank I’m glad to share with you the details of our school’s “Sunshine Break” activity. My mother asked me to open the door to check out who was coming. To be a good son, I braved myself to open the door. I paced to the door and opened it. By the light of the flashlight, I could see a tall creature standing in front of my house door. When I took a good look at the figure, I found out that was the man I knew. He was my father! I was wild with joy. “Dad! Is it you? Is this a dream?” I shouted excitedly, and called my mum down. She was shocked and nearly fainted when she saw my father. “Actually, I planned this thing with the workers in the management office. I knew that your mother would call them, and my plan to be back on our Anniversary Day came true,” said my father. He asked me to fetch the gold necklace he left accidentally in my room when he intended to check if we were home. Then, he handed it to my mum with both of his hands. “Happy Anniversary Day, my dear!” my father said to my mother. My mother couldn’t help crying, giving my dad a big hug. ( 10 ) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
