Harper Lee (1926—2016) was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird (published in 1960), which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. The 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck won three Academy Awards.
For decades, the book was Lee’s only major work of published fiction, but it was hugely influential for generations of U.S. readers. It has sold more than 10 million copies, and is one of the most widely taught novels in the U.S. schools. In 2007 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to literature.
Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared. The world, however, continued waiting for a new novel from her, and on occasion she suggested that she was working on another story.
In 2015, a book did come out. Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as adult.
Though Lee moved to New York in 1949, she spent many years guarding her privacy (隐私) in Monroeville, which served as the clear inspiration for the setting in To Kill a Mockingbird.
In 2007, Lee suffered a stroke (中风), but recovered and later settled in Monroeville permanently to care for her sister, Alice, who died in 2014. She was said to eat breakfast every morning at the same fast-food spot, and was friendly with her neighbors. The countless Americans knew her only through her works, and they will undoubtedly miss her.
4. What can be learned about Harper Lee from the first two paragraphs?
A. She was regarded as the greatest writer in America.
B. She made great contributions to American literature.
C. She once starred in a film adapted from her own novel.
D. She is the most popular writer in American schools in history.
5. Why did Harper Lee disappear from public life after her first novel came out?
A. She tried to get out of criticism.
B. She wanted to write another novel.
C. She suffered a stroke and was in recovery.
D. She felt uneasy about her novel’s influence.
6. What can we learn about Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman?
A. It is based on her own life story. B. It is adapted into a famous film.
C. It won her lots of honors and awards. D. It continues the story of her earlier novel.
7. What can best describe Harper Lee?
A. Influential but simple. B. Ill-tempered but productive.
C. Caring but stubborn. D. Inspiring but struggling.
B 5. D 6. D 7. A

Some people think asking for help is a sign of weakness, but the complete opposite is true. It takes strength to ask for help. It’s a hard thing to do. The truth is, there are more good people than bad. People truly want to help others. No one should ever have to be in that dark place.
I have a friend called Diane. Diane is one of the most positive people I have ever known. She is smart and funny, and by looking at her you would certainly think she had a perfect life. No one knew the terrible things she was dealing with. She never asked anyone for help when she was in great trouble. She thought that she would just be bothering people if she told them the truth. She thought loneliness was her answer. She masked her loneliness, but one day she hit her breaking point.
Diane tried to take her life one morning. She was lucky, though. Someone found her before it was too late. People finally knew her problems and with their help she got rid of them. She once told me that her biggest regret was not reaching out to someone sooner. Diane has greatly changed. She’s become positive and is always ready to help others.
Diane and I have grown quite close. She has helped me battle my own problems. She is an example of what help looks like.
To anyone out there who feels they are alone, I hope you know you are not. Even if you feel the world is closing in on you, there are people who care—people who will surprise you in the best ways. The best thing about our technological world is how easily you can reach people. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You are not alone.
8. What does the author mean by saying “the complete opposite is true” in Paragraph 1?
A. Getting help from others is a great shame. B. Asking for help shows great courage.
C. It takes bravery to offer help. D. It is difficult to get help.
9. Why did Diane refuse to ask for help at first?
A. She was very positive. B. She had no one to turn to.
C. She considered help useless. D. She feared to make trouble for others.
10. What does the author think of our technological world today?
A. It makes people afraid of face-to-face conversation.
B. It makes communication between people easier.
C. It offers a variety of ways to care for others.
D. It is likely to make people feel lonely.
11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To share a friend’s story.
B. To explain why people refuse to get help.
C. To encourage us to ask for help if necessary.
D. To show the harm of keeping problems ourselves.
B 9. D 10. B 11. C

Las Vegas city in Nevada is built in a desert. The city may be known to the world for its partying. But officials have found that there are 21 square kilometers of useless grass. The grass is never laid on, played on or even stepped on. The grass is only there to look nice.
Now the city is asking the Nevada state legislature (立法机构) to ban useless grass. It is trying to become the first place in America to ban that kind of grass often seen between streets, in housing developments and in office parks.
Useless grass nearly makes up 40% of all the grass in Las Vegas and it needs lots of water to survive. Grass needs four times more water than dry climate plants. By tearing out the grass, the city could reduce yearly water usage by 15%.
In 2003, the Southern Nevada Water Authority banned developers from planting grass in front of new homes. It also offered homeowners $30 for each square meter of grass they tear out. But fewer people are now using the program. Water usage has increased here by 9% since 2019. And last year, Las Vegas set a record of 240 days without major rainfall. The Colorado River provides much of Nevada’s drinking water. The river could lose more water as climate change affects it.
Water officials in other dry cities said water usage needs to be reduced. But they fear the reaction to reforms like the ones in Las Vegas if their communities do not accept them. Cynthia Campbell is the water resources adviser for the city of Phoenix in Arizona. “The city restrictions (限制) may get too hard for some residents (居民). They’ll say that is the point of no return for them,” Campbell said. “For some people, it’s a pool. For some people, it’s grass.”
12. Why does Las Vegas city try to ban useless grass?
A. To protect the local people. B. To beautify the city.
C. To reduce water usage. D. To reduce waste.
13. What program was carried out in Las Vegas in 2003?
A. Allowing planting grass before new houses.
B. Awarding those who reduced water usage.
C. Praising those who signed on the program.
D. Encouraging the residents to tear out grass.
14. What does Campbell mean in the last paragraph?
A. Many residents won’t follow the ban.
B. Reaction to the reform will vary personally.
C. Water officials should consider many factors.
D. Other measures should be taken to protect water.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Las Vegas Plans to Ban Useless Grass
B. A Method Is Adopted to Save Las Vegas
C. Choices between Beauty and Practice
D. Grass Is Important but Useless in Las Vegas
C 13. D 14. B 15. A
根据第三段“Useless grass nearly makes up 40% of all the grass in Las Vegas and it needs lots of water to survive. Grass needs four times more water than dry climate plants. By tearing out the grass, the city could reduce yearly water usage by 15%. (无用的草几乎占拉斯维加斯所有草的40%,它需要大量的水才能生存。草需要的水是干燥气候植物的四倍多。通过拔除这些草,这座城市每年的用水量可以减少15%)”可知,无用的草在拉斯维加斯占比高,且非常耗水,如果拔除的话,可以有效减少城市用水量。由此可知,拉斯维加斯试图禁止无用的草的目的是减少用水量。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“In 2003, the Southern Nevada Water Authority banned developers from planting grass in front of new homes. It also offered homeowners $30 for each square meter of grass they tear out. (2003年,南内华达州水务局禁止开发商在新房前种草。它还向房主提供每拆除一平方米草坪30美元的补贴)”可知,2003年,拉斯维加斯开展了鼓励居民拔除草的项目。故选D项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中““The city restrictions (限制) may get too hard for some residents (居民). They’ll say that is the point of no return for them,” Campbell said. “For some people, it’s a pool. For some people, it’s grass.” (Campbell说:“对一些居民来说,城市的限制可能会变得过于严苛,他们会说这是他们无法回头的地步。对一些人来说,这是一个游泳池。对有些人来说,它是草。”)”可推知,Campbell所说的话暗示了对这项改革的反应会因人而异,有些人很可能会不认同该改革。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“Now, the city is asking the Nevada state legislature (立法机构) to ban useless grass. It is trying to become the first place in America to ban that kind of grass often seen between streets, in housing developments and in office parks. 故选A项。
How to Find Your Inner Self
Figuring out who you are and your place in the world is a life-long task. ___16___ Once you realize that finding yourself is an ongoing process, not some sort of goal you must achieve, you’ll realize that you know much more about your inner self than you’ve ever imagined. Here are a few tips that can help you find your inner self.
Think about the moments you are most proud of in your life.
Finding meaning in your life is not easy, nor should it be, but you can get wonderful clues from your own past. ___17___, as they often give you the most meaning and purpose while working, traveling, or learning.
___18___.
As you reflect on things that made you proud, think about what these experiences reveal about your values. Try asking yourself, what values are connected with the things that make me feel proud?
Determine the things you want in life.
Finding your inner self is as much about looking forward as looking back. Whether it is a job, a house in your favorite town, a loving partner, or lazy Sundays with a book, your desires reveal a lot about you. Simply write down the things you want in life.
Look beyond the labels(标签) given to you by others.
___19___ These labels are important to help define your roles and responsibilities in the world, but they are not you. They are just labels, and you are far more complex than a few words.
Remember that finding your inner self is a life-long process because you are always changing. Looking back on your life, note how often you were wrong about yourself. ___20___ Even if you’re sure about yourself now, this change will always happen as you move through life.
A. Recognize your values.
B. Make you proud.
C. But it doesn’t have to be frightening.
D. Think about what you want to achieve in your life,
E. Think about the things that brought your great pride in yourself
F. How often did your likes, desires and goals change as you grew older?
G. At any one time, you may be considered a daughter, a girlfriend, an employee, and a tennis player.
C 17. E 18. A 19. G 20. F
根据前一句“Figuring out who you are and your place in the world is a life-long task.(弄清楚你是谁以及你在世界上的位置是一个终身的任务。)”以及后面的句子“Once you realize that finding yourself is an ongoing process, not some sort of goal you must achieve, you’ll realize that you know much more about your inner self than you’ve ever imagined.(一旦你意识到发现自己是一个不断进行的过程,而不是你必须实现的某种目标,你就会意识到,你对内在自我的了解比你想象的要多得多。)” But it doesn’t have to be frightening.(但这并不一定是可怕的。)
第二段的小标题是“Think about the moments you are most proud of in your life.(想想你生命中最让你骄傲的时刻。)” Think about the things that brought your great pride in yourself(想想是什么让你为自己感到骄傲)中的brought your great pride与小标题中的you are most proud of相一致,且Think about the things与小标题的Think about the moments相一致,因此E选项呼应本段主题,符合语境,故选E。
空格处是本段的小标题,由“As you reflect on things that made you proud, think about what these experiences reveal about your values. Try asking yourself, what values are connected with the things that make me feel proud?(当你回想那些让你骄傲的事情时,想想这些经历揭示了你的价值观。试着问问自己,什么价值观与让我感到自豪的事情有关?)”可知,本段主要讲的是要认识自己的价值观,A选项Recognize your values.(认识到你的价值观。)概括了本段主题,符合语境,故选A。
【19题详解】
后面的句子“These labels are important to help define your roles and responsibilities in the world, but they are not you. They are just labels, and you are far more complex than a few words.(这些标签对定义你在世界上的角色和责任很重要,但它们不是你。它们只是标签,你比几个单词要复杂得多。)”表明人在生活中有很多身份和责任,这些身份的定义很重要,“These labels”和G选项At any one time, you may be considered a daughter, a girlfriend, an employee, and a tennis player.(在任何时候,你都可能被认为是一个女儿,一个女朋友,一个雇员,一个网球运动员。)中的a daughter, a girlfriend, an employee, and a tennis player相呼应,此答案举例说明人可能有很多标签,因此G选项符合语境,在空格处起到启下的作用,故选G。
空格前说“Looking back on your life, note how often you were wrong about yourself.(回顾你的一生,注意你有多少次对自己的看法是错误的。)”,F选项How often did your likes, desires and goals change as you grew older?(随着年龄的增长,你的喜好、愿望和目标会发生多少变化?)中的How often和上文的how often相一致,且change和前面的changing及后面的this change相呼应,因此F选项承上启下,符合语境,故选F。

Every child hopes for gifts for Christmas. But it seemed that my family didn’t have enough money to buy me the bike that I’d wanted for Christmas. After supper was over on Christmas eve, I sat at the table, feeling sorry for myself.
It was cold outside. Soon Dad came back. “Come on, Eric,” he said. “Put on warm clothes. It’s cold out tonight.” I was really upset then. Not only was I not getting the bike for Christmas, but now Dad was dragging me out in the cold. But anyway, I got up and followed him.
Outside, in front of the house, our old truck was ready. The cold was already biting at me. Dad went into the woodshed (柴房) and came out with an armload of wood. “Dad,” I asked, “what are you doing?” He said, “I passed by Ms. Black’s house today. She is a single mother of three kids. Her eldest son, 8-year-old Robert, was out digging around in the woodpile trying to find a few chips. He was just wearing an old thin shirt, trembling with cold. They’re out of wood, Eric.” That was all he said and then he turned and went back into the room for a big ham. He handed them to me and told me to put them in the truck and wait. When he returned, he was carrying a bag of something in his hand. “What’s in the bag?” I asked. “Coats. They’re out of warm clothes. I got the children a little candy too. It just wouldn’t be Christmas without a little candy.”
We drove two miles to Ms. Black’s house. We stopped at the gate and unloaded the wood, then we took the other things to the door. Ms. Black opened the door and let us in. The room felt cold. Such a small fire could hardly give off any heat at all. So Dad asked me to add more wood to the fire.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I soon made the fire burn brighter and everyone’s spirits rose high. The room felt warm now. The kids started giggling when Dad handed them each a piece of candy and a coat. Ms. Black looked with a smile. “The children and I have been praying that angels would come to our help and here you come,” she said with tears running down her face. Dad took each of the kids in his big arms and gave them a hug before we left. Out on the truck I felt a warmth that came from deep within and I didn’t even notice the cold.
On the way back home, Dad turned to me and began to explain about the bike I had longed for. It turned out that he and Mom had finally saved enough money to buy that bike for me. On his way to buy me the gift, Dad saw little Robert out of his house with an old thin shirt. “Son, I spent the money saved for your bike buying coats for the children. I hope you understand,” he said. I understood very well. Now the bike seemed very low on my list of priorities. Dad had given me the look on Ms. Black’s face and the joyful smiles of her three children.

D. She is the most popular writer in American schools in history.
5. Why did Harper Lee disappear from public life after her first novel came out?

D
Las Vegas city in Nevada is built in a desert. The city may be known to the world for its partying. But officials have found that there are 21 square kilometers of useless grass. The grass is never laid on, played on or even stepped on. The grass is only there to look nice.
Now, the city is asking the Nevada state legislature (立法机构) to ban useless grass.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I soon made the fire burn brighter and everyone’s spirits rose high.
