W: Well, one day I was reading about a school in the Netherlands. That had been started by a poor married couple and the wife was called Beatrice Cadbury! I discovered she was a member of the famous Cadbury family. I felt puzzled. Why was a rich woman living as a poor person? The answer was so amazing that I decided to write a book.
M: What did you discover?
W: Well, as a child she lived in huge houses and was educated at the best schools. She had a very comfortable life. But Beatrice grew up wanting to make society a better place. She married a man from the Netherlands. While she was in the Netherlands, she decided she didn’t want to receive any more money from the Cadbury business. She told her brother, who was running the company, that he should give her share of the money to the factory workers instead.
M: And then what happened?
W: Well, she even invited poor people to live in her house. When it became too crowded, she and her family had to live in a tent.
M: Oh, a great woman!

Celebrate the natural world and win prizes!
Planet Earth is a beautiful, wonderful and amazing place. From the highest mountains to the deepest oceans, via tropical rainforests, deserts and your local park, there is a wide variety of landscapes, plants, animals, and insects to enjoy.
Now, with STABILO, The Week Junior is asking our readers to design a poster that celebrates the natural world and write a pledge (誓言) to protect Planet Earth. The winning designs will be shown in our magazine and also win prizes!
The competition is inspired by Earth Day, which takes place on 22 April each year. It is a time to celebrate the planet and also to reflect on how we can better protect it. So we are asking readers to think about what their favourite things from the natural world are and then draw them! This could be anything from a huge elephant to a tiny bee, or a scene from a forest or under the sea. You could also draw your favourite place ---- whether it is a beach, a park or a garden. Then write a short pledge to say how you intend to protect the Earth.
We can’t wait to see your drawings and read your pledges. Good luck!
Instructions
On a piece of paper, draw your poster that celebrates the natural world. Then on a different piece of paper, write your pledge to the planet.
Once you have completed your drawing, ask an adult to take a photo and send your entry (参赛作品) to: theweekjunior.co.uk/stabilocomp (but please only send in one entry per person).
The competition closes on 17 May 2025.

The group member misses the deadline. The classmate talks loudly during your exam study. The parent focuses only on the one low grade. Situations such as these often get our hearts racing and make us angry. Anger isn’t a pleasant feeling. Some of us bottle up the emotion, while others shout out in anger. Both habits influence our bodies, our minds, and our relationships negatively.
Anger may feel uncomfortable, but it’s also normal and healthy. “A lot of people think they have to free themselves of their anger,” says Patrick Keelan, a mental health expert. “But anger is an emotion built into us to signal (发信号) that something needs to be dealt with.” When we take notice of that signal and actually deal with the problem instead of ignoring it, we’re usually much better.
One method of dealing with anger is to talk about it. Brain imaging at the University of Califomia Los Angeles has shown that if you name your feelings, you can actually calm the activity in the amygdala (杏仁核), the part of the brain that causes the let-out of hormones (激素) that lead to anger.
It helps to have a cool-down period before trying to explain to someone you’re angry with how he or she rocked your boat. Do some controlled breathing or find some physical activities to reduce the anger. That will allow for the effects of the hormones to disappear, which in turn allows you to think about what’s troubling you.
When you’re ready to talk to the other person, focus on the behavior and why it concerns you, not the person’s character. Don’t make general complaints, such as “You always do this”. Bring up your reasonable points to the other person in a way that is most likely to get a constructive (有助益的) response.
If you’re on the receiving end, remember that it’s good to admit and try to understand the other person’s anger. Try offering to make a change if you are really wrong. If you’re willing to work through heated situations, the other person will be much more likely to mention this matter peacefully in the future. In the end, you’ll both be healthier.
24. What does the underlined word “bottle up” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Hide. B. Express. C. Improve. D. Recognize.
25. Which of the following statements might Patrick Keelan agree with?
A. Anger is a negative but common feeling.
B. Anger is a natural feeling but should be avoided.
C. Anger is an inner emotion that we seldom notice.
D. Anger is a signal that things go wrong with your mood.
26. What is the author’s advice for dealing with anger?
A. Focusing on changing the other person’s character.
B. Expressing your anger immediately to prevent buildup.
C. Naming your feelings to calm down before discussing.
D. Using sentences like “you always...” to stress your point.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why is anger a healthy feeling?
B. Why do people often get angry?
C. How can you stop an angry person?
D. How can we deal with anger the right way?
A 25. D 26. C 27. D

根据第一段中“Some of us bottle up the emotion, while others shout out in anger.(我们有些人会bottle up这种情绪,而有些人则会怒气冲冲地大喊出来。)”可知,此处提到两种不同的处理愤怒的方式,bottle up the emotion与shout out in anger“愤怒地大喊出来”形成对比,后者是外露情绪,前者应为“隐藏、压抑情绪”,bottle up与hide意思相近。故选A。
根据第二段中““A lot of people think they have to free themselves of their anger,” says Patrick Keelan, a mental health expert. “But anger is an emotion built into us to signal (发信号) that something needs to be dealt with.”(心理健康专家帕特里克·基兰(Patrick Keelan)说:“很多人认为他们必须摆脱愤怒。但愤怒是我们与生俱来的一种情绪,它是在向我们发出信号,表明有些事情需要处理。”)”可知,Patrick Keelan他认为愤怒并非需要摆脱的负面情绪,而是一种具有提示作用的正常情绪信号,表明有事情出现问题、需要处理;由此推知,Patrick Keelan可能会赞成D选项的观点。故选D。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Brain imaging at the University of Califomia Los Angeles has shown that if you name your feelings, you can actually calm the activity in the amygdala (杏仁核), the part of the brain that causes the let-out of hormones (激素) that lead to anger.(加州大学洛杉矶分校的脑部成像研究表明,如果你能说出自己的感受,实际上可以抑制杏仁核的活动,而杏仁核正是大脑中导致愤怒情绪激素释放的部分。)”以及第四段“It helps to have a cool-down period before trying to explain to someone you’re angry with how he or she rocked your boat.(在试图向令你生气的人解释他/她为何会触怒你之前,给自己留一个冷静的时段是很有必要的。)”
C
“Shí éí Nizhoni yinishye,” 19-year-old Nizhoni Tso says in a video online, pointing to the matching written words. “My name is Nizhoni.” She isn’t following the latest dance trend. Instead, she’s leading a language lesson. With a calm and steady voice, she teaches her followers how to introduce themselves in Navajo, a language that the United Nations has classified as endangered.
Nizhoni grew up in the Navajo Nation, hearing the language from her grandparents. But, like many in her generation, she didn’t speak it fluently. “I understood it, but I couldn’t form the sentences to talk back,” she remembers. “It felt like a part of me was missing, like I was holding a book I couldn’t read.”
That feeling led to Nizhoni’s decision to learn Navajo herself. And she decided to record the entire process online, hoping to find a way to push herself and maybe connect with others on the journey. Her first videos were nervous, showing her practicing basic words. However, the community response was immediate and huge. Her followers grew into the tens of thousands, from other Navajo youth to non-native people attracted by the language. Besides, comments poured in from elders, offering encouragement and sometimes gently correcting her pronunciation. This online classroom became her most powerful teacher.
Her work has also resulted in a movement. Dozens of other young Navajo people have started their own language-focused social media accounts, creating an online web of learners and teachers. This is important for a language that has fewer fluent speakers each year, as the elder generation passes away.
The influence goes beyond the online world. Nizhoni now volunteers to teach beginner classes at her local community center, where she has students of all ages. Her grandmother, who once spoke to a child who couldn’t fully answer back, now attends every class, smiling with pride. “To hear my granddaughter teach our language... it’s a comfort,” her grandmother says. “It mends a broken connection.”
28. What is the challenge faced by Navajo?
A. It is in danger of dying out.
B. It fails to attract young people.
C It is difficult to pronounce correctly.
D. It is mainly spoken in traditional families.
29. Why did Nizhoni start posting videos online?
A. To become a social media star.
B. To promote the Navajo language.
C. To offer support to Navajo learners.
D. To encourage herself to stick to her decision.
30. How has Nizhoni’s work affected Navajo?
A. Navajo is no longer endangered.
B. The number of Navajo learners is on the rise.
C. Navajo gains worldwide popularity online.
D. More schools start adding Navajo to their curriculum.
31. What do the underlined words “mends a broken connection” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Repairing a family relationship.
B. Bridging a generational language gap.
C. Solving an Internet connectivity problem.
D. Connecting Navajo with other languages.
A 29. D 30. B 31. B

根据第一段“With a calm and steady voice, she teaches her followers how to introduce themselves in Navajo, a language that the United Nations has classified as endangered.(她用沉稳柔和的声音,教粉丝们如何用纳瓦霍语自我介绍。这种语言已被联合国列为濒危语言。)”可知,纳瓦霍语面临的挑战是濒临消失。故选A项。
根据第三段“And she decided to record the entire process online, hoping to find a way to push herself and maybe connect with others on the journey. (她决定将整个学习过程记录在网上,希望能找到推动自己的方式,或许还能在这段旅程中与他人建立联系。)”可知,尼佐尼发布视频是为了鼓励自己坚持学习纳瓦霍语的决定。故选D项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Dozens of other young Navajo people have started their own language-focused social media accounts, creating an online web of learners and teachers. (数十名其他纳瓦霍年轻人开设了自己的语言类社交媒体账号,形成了一个由学习者和教师组成的在线网络。)”可知,尼佐尼的行动让纳瓦霍语学习者数量不断增加。故选B项。
【31题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“Nizhoni grew up in the Navajo Nation, hearing the language from her grandparents. But, like many in her generation, she didn’t speak it fluently. “I understood it, but I couldn’t form the sentences to talk back,” she remembers. “It felt like a part of me was missing, like I was holding a book I couldn’t read.”(Nizhoni在纳瓦霍族长大,从祖父母那里听到这种语言。但是,和她这一代的许多人一样,她说得不流利。“我明白了,但我说不出话来回应,”她回忆道。“感觉就像我失去了一部分,就像我拿着一本我看不懂的书。”)”以及最后一段“The influence goes beyond the online world.

After the birth of my second child, I got a job at a restaurant. Having worked with an experienced waitress for a few days, I was allowed to wait tables on my own. All went well that first week. When Saturday night came, I was luckily given the tables not far from the kitchen. However, I still felt it a little hard to carry the trays (托盘) because it reached the limit of my strength.
Before I knew it , the restaurant was full of people. I moved slowly, minding every step. I remember how happy I was when I saw the tray stand near the tables; it looked different from the one I was trained on. It had nice handles, which made it easier to move around. I was pleased with every thing and began to believe I was a natural at this job.
Then, an old man came to me and said, “Excuse me, dear, my wife and I loved watching you work. It seems your tray stand has been very useful to you, but we are getting ready to leave now, and my wife needs her walker back.”
At first his message did not get across. “What was he talking about?” Then, I got it. I had set my trays on his wife’s orthopedic walker (助步器). I stood frozen as ice, but my face was on fire. I wanted to get into a hole and hide. Since then, I have learned from many mistakes such as the one I just described. I have learned to be more careful and not to be too sure of myself.

34. What can be inferred about the author when she used the “tray stand”?
A. She realized it was not a restaurant tool.
B. She thought the old couple were being rude.
C. She believed the restaurant had provided poor equipment.
D. She did not recognize it as the old lady’s walker.
35. What was the main lesson the author learned from this experience?
A. Restaurant work requires great physical strength.
B. Always check equipment before using it.
C. Old customers can be unreasonable.

This kind of support doesn’t just make kids better at school but helps them feel ready for future life.
Families pass on traditions and teach good habits.

I'm crazy about running. Sometimes the pain of running can have a magic influence on a runner. Throughout any given race, you are suffering. Your lungs feel like they're being squeezed (挤压) by something unseen. But it is in this pain that a great runner is created.
My first cross-country coach told me that every race is run with patience and determination. I've carried this advice with me for hundreds of miles. I especially remember the 5 miles of running in one race, where his words encouraged me a lot.
That day the weather was perfect. I and dozens of runners gathered at the starting line to do some last-minute preparations for the running. Then, we lined up and got ready to start. There was a brief moment before the gun gave a signal of running. In that moment of great stress, I determined to push myself to run as fast as possible, hoping to make my coach proud, who was waiting for me at the finish line. When the sound of "Bang" came up, we were off.
Running between runners, I managed to work my way up in the first 400 meters and passed many racers on my sides. But out of good sportsmanship, we each said a "good job" or "keep up" to every person we passed. Although we were competitors, running was a connection we all shared.
The first mile passed quickly in a feeling of excitement. It was not challenging in the beginning of the running. But I knew it would be harder and harder in the following miles. I made full use of the running skills that my coach had taught me. I checked that I was doing everything right, breathing in through my nose, keeping my hands relaxed and pumping (快速摆动) my arms. However, the shadow of tiredness danced before me. Anyway I tried to push it out of my mind.
With time going by, the competition became fiercer. Every runner tried their best to run in order to gain a good place in the race. Audience along the track shouted and cheered us.

Possible version:
Eventually I reached the final mile. It was then that I felt extremely tired and sweat fell down my face. Many runners in the race had fallen behind, but I refused to be one of them. Instead, I chose to pump my legs a little faster and push myself a little harder. As the last half mile was near, the number of people along the track increased. Around the next corner, I could see my coach waving to me in great excitement. I tried to run faster.
Unfortunately, I suddenly fell down. I felt great pain and discouraged. Just at that moment, the audience shouted, "Come on, girl!” "Watch out!” "Keep up!” Meanwhile, a runner behind me came to me and gave me a lift. I was really grateful and encouraged. I stood up and ran for the final 400 meters. When I finally sailed over the finish line, I nearly cried with relief. I won the third place in the race. My coach was proud of me and I felt great too.

C How can you stop an angry person?
D. How can we deal with anger the right way?

Nizhoni now volunteers to teach beginner classes at her local community center where she has students of all ages.
C. It is difficult to pronounce correctly.
D. It is mainly spoken in traditional families.
29. Why did Nizhoni start posting videos online?
A. To become a social media star.
B. To promote the Navajo language.
C. To offer support to Navajo learners.
D. To encourage herself to stick to her decision.
30 How has Nizhoni’s work affected Navajo?
B Bridging a generational language gap.
C. Solving an Internet connectivity problem.
D. Connecting Navajo with other languages.

32. Why did the author find working on Saturday night challenging at first?
A. She was assigned tables far from the kitchen.
B. She had to carry heavy trays.
C. The restaurant was empty and slow.
D. She was working without any training.
33. How did the author feel when she first saw the tray stand near her tables?
A. Confused and frustrated. B. Anxious and overwhelmed.
C. Pleased and increasingly confident. D. Embarrassed and regretful.
D. Avoid being overconfident and pay attention.
