What exactly would you do? I am applying for a program that starts in early september. I'd spend a few months volunteering to teach english in a rural school and then participate in an unpaid environmental project in southeast asia. The program provides accommodation, and there is a small allowance to cover part of the expense. That sounds Better than I expected, but my concern is that after such a break, IT could be difficult to return to university life. I understand mom, but I believe the experience will make me more independent, improve my communication skills and give me a clear sense of direction. I see if then still, I want to be sure you've considered the chAllenges. The schedule can be stressful and volunteer work isn't always easy. True, but i'm ready to face IT. I'll prepare carefully and stay in touch with you. All right, then if you're determined, I won't stop you. Let's check the budget and timeline this weekend. Sports are not a modern invention. People around the world have enjoyed exciting and meaningful sports since ancient times. Here are some examples of ancient sports from different cultures.
Egyptian Pharaohs’ Running Race
In ancient Egypt, kings demonstrated their physical strength by running during the Sed Festival. This special event took place after a king had ruled for 30 years. For example, Pharaoh Djoser ran around the temple for a long time to prove he was still healthy and strong.
Minoan Bull-Leaping
The Minoan people created a very dangerous sport called bull-leaping. In this event, athletes would run directly at a charging bull, grab its horns (角) and leap over its back. Wall paintings from the Palace of Knossos show these exciting scenes.
Mesopotamian Wrestling
Ancient Mesopotamians practiced wrestling and boxing. Stone carvings show strong fighters wearing skirts during matches. These matches were intense, with fighters wrestling like wild animals.
Ancient Chinese Archery (射箭)
In the Zhou Dynasty’s royal education, archery was a required skill for men. Competitions, called “sheyi”, were held with strict rules and ceremonies. To win, a person needed both physical skill and qualities such as grace, self-control and respect. These contests often took place in temples and served to promote moral values and social order.
Although ancient sports varied widely in form and intent, they universally highlighted the value of skill. Beyond mere competition, these activities were deeply integrated into their societies, reflecting cultural beliefs and shaping a sense of community.

Passengers of a superyacht (豪华游艇) caused a large wildfire on the charming beach of Saint Nicholas on the Greek island of Hydra in the late hours of June 21.
The individuals who were near the beach of the beautiful Greek island were seen by people on land throwing fireworks from their ship at around 10:45 pm local time. This seemingly innocent and fun activity, however, ended up setting the surrounding forest area on fire.
According to Fire Service authorities from the island, the fire began burning in a particularly difficult-to-access location of Hydra with no road infrastructure (基础设施).
Luckily, the centre of the incident was far from any urban settlements and villages. Firefighters approached the site using Coast Guard ships in an attempt to put out the fire from the sea. Many volunteer firefighters also joined the effort to contain the large flames and prevent them from spreading further inland. This could have had destructive consequences for the beautiful Greek island of Hydra.
Late on June 22, the Greek Fire Service announced that a total of thirteen people had been arrested, accused of causing a wildfire in the forested area on the island of Hydra. The individuals are expected to be on trial. The island of Hydra belongs administratively to Piraeus, a port city in the region of Attica to which Athens belongs.
Greek media reported that all those arrested were crew members of the superyacht. It is available for summer charter(包租)at €249,000 per week, according to several superyacht dealers online.
“We are indignant that some people so irresponsibly throw fireworks into a pine forest,” Hydra’s mayor, Giorgos Koukoudakis, told Greek broadcaster ERT. There was also criticism on social media, “Rich people with more money than brains,” wrote one person.
24. Why was it difficult for the firefighters to get close to the fire?
A. The fire was too fierce.
B. The fire broke out late at night.
C. Coast Guard vessels weren’t available.
D. The road to the site didn’t exist at all.
25 What does the underlined word “indignant” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Cross. B. Indifferent. C. Embarrassed. D. Impatient.
26. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Piraeus is an inland city in Attica.
B. Passengers of the yacht were all arrested.
C. Wealthy people are not necessarily socially responsible.
D. Throwing fireworks around is an innocent and fun activity.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To inform an accident. B. To call for actions to take.
C. To give some advice to follow. D. To persuade to believe the truth.

At 1:43 a.m. October 5 2022, Stanford chemist Carolyn R. Bertozzi was awakened by a phone call from a Nobel committee representative who told her, “You have 50 minutes to collect yourself and wait until your life changes.” Instructed not to share the announcement outside of her tightest inner circle, the first person Bertozzi called was her father, a retired physics professor from MIT. “He’s 91 and, of course, he was just overjoyed,” said Bertozzi.
Carolyn Bertozzi, born October 10, 1966, Boston, was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry for her development of bioorthogonal reactions, which allow scientists to explore cells and track biological processes without disturbing the normal chemistry of the cell. She shares the $10 million Swedish kronor (about $1 million USD) prize equally with Morten Meldal, professor at University of Copenhagen and K. Barry Sharpless, professor at Scripps Research “for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry.”
Carolyn received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Harvard University in 1988 and a doctorate in the same subject from the University of California Berkeley in 1993. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Francisco, from 1993 to 1995. She became an assistant professor at Berkeley in 1996 and a full professor of chemistry and molecular and cell biology in 2002. She also held an appointment as a professor of molecular and cellular pharmacology from 2000 to 2002 at the University of California, San Francisco. In 2015 she became a professor of chemistry at Stanford University.
“I could not be more delighted that Carolyn Bertozzi has won the Nobel Prize in chemistry,” said Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne. “In pioneering the field of bioorthogonal chemistry, Carolyn invented a new way of studying biomolecular processes, one that has helped scientists around the world gain a deeper understanding of chemical reactions in living systems. Her work has had remarkable real-world impact, providing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to treat disease. Carolyn is so deserving of this honor, and all of us at Stanford are too proud to call her one of our own.”
Carolyn’s bioorthogonal reactions have been used to study how cells build proteins and other molecules, to develop new cancer medicines, and to produce new materials for energy storage, among many other applications.
28. Why does the author mention the phone call Carolyn received in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the background information of Carolyn.
B. To reveal a conversation between two scientists.

Long Haifen, from a mountainous village in Guizhou province, is now a freshman at Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU). Ordinary as she may seem, she represents the strong bond between her hometown and the university, as well as the transformative power of education and sympathy.
In July 2002, Xu Benyu, then a junior student at HZAU, volunteered to teach in the rural areas of Guizhou. The following year, he gave up postgraduate studies and returned there, teaching at two schools for two years, including Long’s elementary school. In 2005, HZAU established the “Benyu Volunteer Service Team”, engaging students annually to continue providing educational support.
In 2017, the 19th volunteer group, including Cao Yuanyuan and Li Zongqing, arrived at Long’s school, Weimin Elementary School, which had 174 students from kindergarten to sixth grade but only six classrooms. The school was severely understaffed. Cao had to teach four subjects while Li managed 23 classes per week. Long and her classmates cherished the opportunity to learn and worked diligently.
The volunteers not only taught knowledge to Long but also developed her personal growth. They encouraged her to deliver speeches at the school’s flag-raising ceremonies, helping to build her confidence. They also broadened her views beyond the mountains. In August 2017, Long participated in an educational trip to Beijing organized by the volunteers, which strengthened her courage to study outside the mountains and have access to better educational resources and a wider world.
Unfortunately, in 2020, her father was involved in a car accident, placing the family in financial difficulty. Hearing this, the volunteers quickly raised enough money, ensuring Long’s following education. All these efforts paid off. Long was admitted to HZAU.

第二节 (共 5小题;每小题 2.5 分, 满分 12.5分)
The Future of Scent: Digitizing the World of Smells
Have you ever entered a café and immediately felt relaxed by the smell of freshly brewed coffee? Or felt a rush of memories when catching the scent of rain on dry soil? ____36____— For centuries, smells have been tied to our emotions and experiences — but what if we could capture, share, and even recreate these scents digitally? This concept, known as digital scent technology, is moving from science fiction to reality.
____37____ The process starts with an “electronic nose” (e-nose), which identifies the chemical components of a smell and converts them into a unique digital code. Next, this code is stored in a database or transmitted to another device. Finally, a “scent synthesizer” uses the code to mix chemicals and reproduce the original smell.
While the technology is still developing, its potential uses are already exciting. ____38____ For example, food companies could let customers “smell” a new snack before buying it online. In virtual reality (VR), adding scents could make gaming or training simulations feel far more immersive.
However, digital scent technology faces significant challenges. One major issue is the complexity of smells: a single scent can be made of hundreds of chemicals, making it hard to code accurately. ____39____ What smells “pleasant” to one person might be “overwhelming” to another, which complicates the goal of recreating scents universally.
____40____. Companies are already testing small, phone-connected scent devices, and researchers are working to reduce the cost of e-noses. As these advances continue, we might soon be able to send a “scent message” to a friend or add digital smells to our favorite movies. The day when we can interact with smells online may be closer than we think.
A. These are just two examples of how smells shape our daily lives.
B. Despite these difficulties, progress is being made in the field.
C. Digital scent technology works through a three-step process.
D. Some people worry digital scents will replace real-world smells.
E. Another problem is the subjective nature of smell perception.
F. The idea of digital scents has been around for decades.
G. It could transform industries from marketing to entertainment.

Li Jia returned to her hometown in the remote mountains last summer, only to find the once-thriving bamboo weaving industry on the edge of ____41____. The old workshops, where her grandfather once spent decades perfecting his ____42____, now stood empty, their wooden frames covered in dust. The familiar sound of bamboo strips being split — once a constant backdrop to village life — had fallen silent.
When she asked Uncle Wang, the last remaining master weaver in the village, why no young people wanted to learn the craft, he sighed heavily. “Bamboo weaving takes at least five years to master, and the pay is ____43____ compared to factory jobs in the city. Young folks are in too much of a hurry to ____44____ the patience it requires. They’d rather work overtime for quick money than sit for hours splitting bamboo into thin, even strips.” His words left Li Jia with a deep sense of ____45____; she remembered watching her grandfather weave baskets as a child, his hands moving with effortless ____46____, turning raw bamboo into works of art.
Determined to ____47____ the tradition from fading away, Li Jia quit her office job in the city and moved back home. She started by documenting Uncle Wang’s weaving process — taking hundreds of photos and videos, ____48____ every detail of how he softened bamboo in boiling water, split it with a bamboo knife, and wove the strips into delicate baskets and mats. At first, her efforts were met with ____49____. Some villagers joked that she was “chasing ghosts of the past,” while others doubted a young woman could ever ____50____ such a complex craft. Slowly Li Jia’s work ____53____. More young people in the village began to gather around Uncle Wang’s workshop, asking to learn. She even organized workshops in nearby cities, where she taught urban residents the basics of bamboo weaving. “It’s not just about making baskets,” Li Jia told a reporter during an interview. “It’s about keeping our ancestors’ wisdom ____54____ — a way to let the world know that our small village has something precious to ____55____.”
Today, the sound of splitting bamboo has returned to the village. And for Li Jia, that sound is more than just noise — it’s the sound of tradition coming back to life.

第二节 (满分 25 分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Three months after moving into the old community, I’d only met Grandma Chen next door once. That day, I was carrying express boxes upstairs when she slowly came down, holding the handrail (楼梯扶手). She gave me an oil-paper wrapped candy: “Young man, take care — these stairs are slippery.” I thanked her quickly and hurried on. Her door was always piled high with junk, and the potted plants on her windowsill (窗台) were wilted (枯萎的), giving off a lonely, cold atmosphere.
The change happened on a rainy night. I worked overtime late and rushed into the corridor with my electric bike, only to see Grandma Chen squatting (蹲着) at my door, soaked through, clutching a plastic bag tightly. “You’re back!” She stood up hurriedly and held out the bag. “I saw your jasmine (茉莉) fell over on the balcony this afternoon. I was afraid the rain would ruin its roots, so I moved it inside.” I suddenly remembered I’d forgotten to bring in the new jasmine pot that morning. Inside the bag, the flower was wrapped in an old towel, leaves still dotted with water — unharmed.
I urged her into my house to dry off, but she waved me away: “Don’t bother. I’m just a dirty old lady.” As she spoke, she slipped and stumbled toward the stairs. I caught her just in time and noticed her swollen knee. That night, I applied medicine to her knee. She sat on my sofa restlessly, repeating, “I’m troubling you so much.”
After that, I made sure to chat with Grandma Chen whenever we met. She still spoke little, but every morning when I left, there would be a bag of fresh vegetables from her small garden downstairs at my door. Last Saturday, I forgot to take out the trash before a business trip. When I came back, my doorway was spotless. Grandma Chen’s door was slightly open, and I heard faint coughing inside.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
I pushed the door gently.

Once Grandma Chen recovered, she knocked on my door.

第一节 (共15小题;每小题 2.5分,满分 37.5分)
A
Sports are not a modern invention.

25. What does the underlined word “indignant” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Cross.
【答案】24. D 25. A 26. C 27. A

At 1:43 a.m. October 5, 2022, Stanford chemist Carolyn R.
Carolyn received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Harvard University in 1988 and a doctorate in the same subject from the University of California, Berkeley in 1993. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Francisco, from 1993 to 1995.
C. To arouse the readers’ interest in the passage.
D. To show the urgency about the information.
29. What can we learn about Carolyn from paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. Her education and success. B. Her delight and pride.
C. Her kindness and devotion. D. Her dream and ambition.
30. What can we infer from Marc Tessier-Lavigne’s words?
A. He wants to cooperate with Carolyn.
B. Carolyn has found a new cure for cancer.
C. He benefits greatly from Carolyn’s findings.
D. Carolyn’s findings are of great significance.
31. What is the text?
A. A profile. B. A news report.
C. A journal. D. A book review.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. B

【答案】36. A 37. C 38. G 39. E 40. B

根据前文“Have you ever entered a café and immediately felt relaxed by the smell of freshly brewed coffee? Or felt a rush of memories when catching the scent of rain on dry soil?( 你是否曾经走进咖啡馆,一闻到现煮咖啡的香味就感到放松?或者在干燥的土壤上闻到雨水的味道时,会有大量回忆涌上心头?)”以“咖啡馆咖啡香”和“雨后泥土香”两个具体场景提问,空格后“For centuries, smells have been tied to our emotions and experiences — but what if we could capture, share, and even recreate these scents digitally?( 几个世纪以来,气味一直与我们的情感和经历联系在一起——但如果我们能捕捉、分享甚至用数字技术重现这些气味呢?)”转折引出“数字气味技术”。A 项“These are just two examples of how smells shape our daily lives.( 这些只是气味如何影响日常生活的两个例子。)”,既总结前文的两个场景,又衔接后文“气味与情感、经历相关”的核心观点,起到“承上启下”的作用。故选A项。
【37题详解】
根据空格后“The process starts with an “electronic nose” (e-nose), which identifies the chemical components of a smell and converts them into a unique digital code. Next, this code is stored in a database or transmitted to another device. Finally, a “scent synthesizer” uses the code to mix chemicals and reproduce the original smell.( 这个过程从“电子鼻”开始,电子鼻识别气味的化学成分,并将它们转换成独特的数字代码。接下来,该代码存储在数据库中或传输到另一个设备。最后,一个“气味合成器”使用代码混合化学物质并重现原始气味。)”详细描述了数字气味技术的三个步骤(电子鼻识别化学成分→编码存储 / 传输→气味合成器重现气味),C项“Digital scent technology works through a three-step process.( 数字气味技术通过三步流程运作。)”是该段的主题句,精准概括后文内容,符合“总—分”结构。故选C项。

【39题详解】
根据空格前“One major issue is the complexity of smells: a single scent can be made of hundreds of chemicals, making it hard to code accurately.( 一个主要问题是气味的复杂性:一种气味可能由数百种化学物质组成,因此很难准确编码。)”提出第一个挑战“气味成分复杂,难以精准编码”,空格后“What smells “pleasant” to one person might be “overwhelming” to another.( 对一个人来说“令人愉快”的东西对另一个人来说可能“令人难以忍受”。)”强调“气味感知具有主观性(因人而异)”。E 项“Another problem is the subjective nature of smell perception.( 另一个问题是气味感知的主观性。)”
重点论述技术面临的挑战,空格后“Companies are already testing small, phone-connected scent devices, and researchers are working to reduce the cost of e-noses.( 一些公司已经在测试小型的、与手机相连的气味设备,研究人员也在努力降低电子鼻的成本。)”描述“公司测试设备、研究人员降低成本”的积极进展,最后展望未来应用。B 项“Despite these difficulties, progress is being made in the field.( 尽管有这些困难,该领域仍在取得进展。)”
But Li Jia didn’t let the doubt stop her.
She set up an online shop, where she sold the pieces Uncle Wang made, and used the profits to ____51____ high-quality bamboo for him. She also created short videos about bamboo weaving, sharing the stories behind each piece — how a basket’s pattern was inspired by mountain clouds, or how a mat’s color reflected the village’s autumn foliage. To her surprise, the videos went viral, attracting thousands of views from people ____52____ in traditional crafts.
Slowly, Li Jia’s work ____53____.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。

【答案】
I pushed the door gently. Inside, I saw Grandma Chen lying on her bed, looking pale and weak. A bowl of medicine was placed beside her, and I could tell from the smell that it was bitter. “Are you feeling better?” I asked, sitting down beside her. She nodded weakly and said, “I’m just a bit tired. Thank you for taking care of me.” I realized then that she had been taking care of me too, in her own quiet way.
Once Grandma Chen recovered, she knocked on my door. She held a basket of freshly picked vegetables in her hands and said, “I want to thank you for helping me when I was sick.” I smiled and invited her in, knowing that this simple act of kindness had brought us closer together. From that day on, we became like family, always there to lend a helping hand whenever one of us needed it, which made our lives in the old community much warmer.
