A grandmother cooks chicken. A group of kids, ages 8 to 14, watch her make the dish. This cooking class is part of a “Summer Camp” in Southern California. At this camp, grandmas are in charge. Each week, they teach young campers how to cook a new dish and do crafts.
“Loneliness is something that seniors are challenged with, and they love having younger people around them,” said Zainab, who works at Olive Community Services that brings older adults together and created the camp.
During the last week of the camp, a 9-year-old Janna learned how to use a sewing machine and make pockets. The camper had pressed hard on the machine’s pedal, making the needle move quickly. “Slowly, slowly,” Rahim, a grandma teaching the sewing class, said to her. The girl smiled when she made it. Rahim said the camp is “filling a gap” for kids. Many schools don’t teach these skills like cooking and sewing.
Rahim also doesn’t get to spend much time with her grandchildren because they don’t live close. “It is heartwarming to be able to interact with those who love being around you,” she said.
The summer camp was organized through a partnership with the Golden Connections Club started by a 14-year-old high school student Leena to encourage teens and seniors to interact. She noticed that many students didn’t have the chance to spend as much time with their grandparents. She also learned about challenges faced by senior adults, such as unfair treatment.
The club organizes monthly lunches at Leena’s school. They invite the seniors to the school and discuss topics where both groups can learn from each other. One of the most valuable lessons they’ve shared with her is to live in the moment, and this has taken on new meaning for Leena. “The people we have right now, they’re not going to be with us forever,” she said.
4. What can we know about the Summer Camp?
A. It is mainly about cooking. B. It offers jobs to teenagers.
C. It is held on a monthly basis. D. It is in the charge of the seniors.
5. What do the underlined words “filling a gap” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Providing engaging games. B. Offering nutritious meals.
C. Teaching practical techniques. D. Organizing interactive activities.
6. What did Rahim think of teaching the sewing class at the camp?
A. Refreshing. B. Fulfilling. C. Challenging. D. Pioneering.
7. What is the main purpose of the club?
A. To pass down traditional recipes. B. To ensure an inclusive atmosphere.
C. To improve elderly people’s welfare. D. To promote interaction between generations.

Imagine attending a job interview and being rejected without a single question — simply because your face “didn’t fit.” You’d likely accuse the company of discrimination, but what if facial features could genuinely predict job performance? This thought-provoking question lies at the core of a recent study by Marius Guenzel from the University of Pennsylvania and his research team.
Personality assessments are a standard part of modern recruitment (招聘), yet they often rely on self-reported surveys or interviews where candidates may tailor answers to impress employers. Guenzel’s team took an innovative approach: using an AI algorithm. During their experiment, the researchers analyzed the profile photos of 96,000 graduates, extracting what they termed the “Photo Big Five”: agreeableness, conscientiousness (尽责性), extraversion (外向性), neuroticism (神经质), openness. By cross-referencing these AI-detected traits with real-world labor-market data, they found that facial analysis could predict those graduates’ income and career mobility. However, they emphasized that its predictive power is limited, serving only as an complementary source of information rather than a decisive factor.
Despite this finding, the study has sparked intense debates and raised significant concerns. For one, combined patterns obtained from large datasets cannot guarantee accurate predictions of individual performance. For another, legal and ethical risks stood out: anti-discrimination laws in many regions make hiring decisions based on facial characteristics a potential legal violation. More unnoticeably, if facial traits are considered fixed, the value of personal growth and self-improvement is weakened — why strive to change if your face already signals certain traits to employers?
Experts like Manish Raghavan from MIT Sloan School of Management note that most companies remain wary of adopting such AI tools. He argues that people are more willing to accept decisions based on unchanging traits only when there is clear logic. This logic, however, is far from proven in the case of facial analysis in recruitment, thus making public acceptance difficult. As such, human interaction in interviews—where candidates can showcase their abilities and personality directly — remains irreplaceable.
8. What can facial analysis forecast about surveyed graduates according to Guenzel’s study?
A. Their academic achievements. B. Their ability to impress interviewers.
C. Their “Photo Big Five” personality traits. D. Their future earnings and job development.
9. What problem may AI facial analysis cause in the hiring process?
A. Discouraging career-related self-improvement.
B. Violating labor protection laws in most regions.
C. Causing over-reliance on AI for candidate assessment.
D. Failing to predict any individual performance accurately.
10. What does the underlined word “wary” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Eager. B. Favorable. C. Cautious. D. Indifferent.
11. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Photo Big Five: A Personality Assessment Tool.
B. AI-powered Facial Test: Predictors of Career Success.
C. Facial Traits in Hiring: Too Soon to Trust.
D. AI Facial Analysis: the Future of Recruitment.
D
Some people have said aging is more a slide into forgetfulness than a journey towards wisdom. However, a growing body of research suggests that late-in-life learning in reality education possibly does an aging brain good.
Throughout life, people’s brains constantly restore themselves. In the late 1960s, British brain scientist Geoffrey Raisman studied growth in damaged brain regions of rats through an electron microscope; their brains were making new connections. This meant brains may change every time a person learns something new.
Of course, that doesn’t mean the brain isn’t affected by the effects of time. Just as height usually declines over the years, so does brain volume: Humans lose about 4 percent every decade starting in their 40s. But that reduction doesn’t necessarily make people think slower; as long as we are alive and functioning, we can change our brains with new information and experiences.
In fact, scientists now suspect accumulating novel experiences, facts, and skills can keep people’s minds more flexible. New pathways can strengthen our ever-changing mental structure, even as the brain shrinks.
Conventional ways like word puzzles and brain-training apps can contribute to mental durability. Even something as simple as taking a different route to the grocery store or going somewhere new on vacation can keep the brain healthy.
A desire for new life challenges can further boost brainpower. Research about aging adults who take on new enterprises shows improved function and memory as well as a reduced risk of mental disease. Openness — a, characteristic defined by curiosity and a desire for knowledge-may also help folks pass brain tests. Some folks are born with this take-in-the-world attitude, but those who aren’t as genetically gifted aren’t necessarily out of luck. While genes can encourage an interest in doing new things, a 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging found completing reasoning tasks like puzzles and number games can enhance that desire for novel experiences, which can, in turn, refresh the brain. That’s why brain scientist Richard Kennedy says “It’s not that old dogs can’t learn new tricks. It’s that maybe old dogs don’t realize why they should.”
12. What do some people think of aging adults?
A. Their wisdom grows as time goes by. B. Their memory is gradually getting worse.
C. They can benefit from late-in-life learning. D. They are likely to have mental health issues.
13. What can we conclude from Geoffrey Raisman’s finding?
A. Brain damage seriously prevents one’s learning.
B. Brain power weakens slower than we imagine.
C. Brains may refresh and improve with learning.
D. Brains make connections under good physical conditions.
14. What is one thing that helps maintain the health of our brain even as it shrinks?
A. Doing daily routines by conventional means. B. Avoiding worrying about our mental strength.
C. Imitating old dogs’ way of learning new tricks. D. Approaching everyday tasks in novel ways.
15. What is the finding of the 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging?
A. Wishing to solve puzzles enhances one’s reasoning power.
B. Playing number games unexpectedly stimulates one’s memory.
C. Desiring new experiences can help to refresh the brain.
D. Learning new tricks should not be confined to old dogs only.

When our only child, Lucas, was leaving our home for college in Hartford, Connecticut, deep worry settled over me. For years, I had taught Lucas to be cautious about strangers. Now, the thought of him facing a world full of unfamiliar people on his own filled me with quiet anxiety.
My husband, Lucas and I flew to Hartford and stayed at a small hotel facing the campus. The room had a bed and a sleeper sofa; my husband asked the front desk for extra sheets. A few minutes later a woman in her mid-fifties arrived, who introduced herself as Tootie. When she learned why we came, she warmly offered to help. As she made the sofa bed, she wrote down her phone number and handed it to Lucas. He accepted it with hesitation. She said we could call if Lucas ever needed anything, and her tone made it sound like an offer we should accept. Tootie’s warmth made my long-held rule feel strangely rigid. Her attention was practical: she asked which dorm Lucas would be in and where we had parked.
Later that evening, as we repacked our suitcases, Lucas’s face went pale. He remembered placing his backpack, which contained his student ID and all his housing documents, by the roadside while unloading the suitcase. panic set in immediately. Without that ID and the housing documents, he would not be able to check into his dorm at the 10 am appointment. It was now past 9 pm, dark and unfamiliar outside.
— Tootie, who returned to do the cleaning, got a large flashlight and said we should go out for a search and that she would accompany us. The three of us stood in the room. We faced a choice: go out into the unfamiliar darkness with this kind stranger, or risk losing everything by waiting until morning. Lucas looked at me, his eyes full of anxiety.

【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. C

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“By cross-referencing these AI-detected traits with real-world labor-market data, they found that facial analysis could predict those graduates’ income and career mobility.(通过将这些AI检测到的特征与现实劳动力市场数据进行比对,他们发现面部分析可以预测这些毕业生的收入和职业发展。)”可知,面部分析可以预测被调查毕业生未来的收入和职业发展。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“More unnoticedly, if facial traits are considered fixed, the value of personal growth and self-improvement is weakened — why strive to change if your face already signals certain traits to employers?(更易被忽视的是,如果面部特征被认为是固定不变的,个人成长和自我提升的价值就会被削弱——如果你的脸已经向雇主显示了某些特征,为什么还要努力改变呢?)”可知,AI面部分析可能会打击个人职业相关的自我提升。故选A项。
【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第四段中的“Experts like Manish Raghavan from MIT Sloan School of Management note that most companies remain wary of adopting such AI tools.(麻省理工学院斯隆管理学院的Manish Raghavan等专家指出,大多数公司对采用这类AI工具仍持wary。)”结合后文面部分析缺乏明确逻辑、公众难以接受等信息可推知,“wary”意为谨慎的。故选C项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“As such, human interaction in interviews — where candidates can showcase their abilities and personality directly — remains irreplaceable.(因此,面试中的人际互动——候选人可以直接展示自己的能力与个性——仍然是不可替代的。)”可知,文章介绍了AI面部分析用于招聘的研究,指出其存在预测不准确、伦理法律风险,且目前难以被接受和信任。C选项“招聘中的面部特征:尚不可信”最适合作为文章标题。故选C项。

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. C

【答案】Good morning, everybody. The topic “What Contributions Can Students Make to Rural Revitalization?” inspires me deeply. My suggestions are as follows.
First, let’s remind our parents to choose and buy local agricultural products, which directly increases farmers’ incomes and encourages sustainable farming. Second, we can use social media to share the beauty of the countryside. By posting photos and stories, we can attract tourists and help promote local culture. Finally, I encourage us students to visit rural areas and even volunteer there. This firsthand experience builds a real connection and develops a clear understanding of rural life.
These simple steps can make a real difference. Let’s turn our care into action and contribute to a beautiful future of our countryside.

【答案】I met Tootie’s determined eyes and made a quick decision. We hurried out into the night following Tootie. Her flashlight cut a path through the darkness. Lucas’s panic was gradually replaced by focused determination. All of a sudden, the light caught something behind a tree——the bag was safe there! Some warm-hearted stranger must have seen it and put it there purposefully. Feeling grateful and relieved, I thanked Tootie again and again when we returned to the hotel. That night, Lucas carefully saved Tootie’s phone number on his phone.
After handing over the documents the next morning, Lucas returned to the hotel with us. There, we found Tootie, who walked over with a warm smile, Lucas did not hesitate this time; he gave her a heartfelt hug. Driving away from the city with my husband, I felt a sense of peace. I understood that the greatest gift I could give my son was not a list of warnings, but the belief that the world is never short of kindness, which is often found in the most unexpected encounters.
