The town, home to one of the world's most well known universities, still has large parts under water and without power. Most of those fact have been relocated to the nearby town of reading. While emergency services continue to try and rescue people stuck in their homes, the prime minister thanked the workers for their quick reactions and hard work and promised that more investment would be made in flood defenses. He also said Moore needed to be done to address the issue of climate change, which many scientific experts have said played a significant part in the flooding. Many celebrities have made donations to the relief effort. However, the weather service has warned that with more heavy rain due tomorrow and for the rest of the week, people should consider leaving the area. We will have more on that story as IT develops. The violence of shaking from an earthquake is usually focused in the direction the quake is traveling. But a boomerang quake may spread the intense shaking across a wider zone. The new study, published today in the journal Nature Geoscience, is a major step toward clearing up the complex physics behind boomerang quakes and understanding their potential damage.
The latest boomerang was recorded near the mid-ocean ridge in the Atlantic in 2016. By examining the position of the epicenter (震中) and the energy released by each shaking phase, Stephen Hicks, an earthquake seismologist at the Imperial College London and first author of the new study, identified what seemed to be two steps of the quake:The quake initially headed eastward, but then turned back west. “This was weird, ”he says. This second leg of the quake moved remarkably quickly, at so-called supershear speeds. The quake unzipped the surface at an estimated 11, 000 miles per hour—fast enough to dart from New York to London in 18. 5 minutes, so fast that it caused the geologic version of a sonic boom.
How often does this happen?A boomerang quake at supershear speeds, as Hicks and his team observed in the Atlantic, may be a fairly rare type. But wider evidence of boomerang quakes is mounting. These back-tracking events have been studied in computer models as well as simulated in lab experiments. “The theory says that it’s there, but it’s quite difficult to see that [in the real world], ”says Hicks. The 2016 earthquake in Kumamoto also seems to have ruptured (破裂) in a similar process. For that event, the initial shake triggered two other quakes, one of which raced backward to partially overlap the initial break.
Understanding when and why these boomerang events happen is vital to grappling with risks earthquakes present. “Studies like this help us understand how past earthquakes ruptured, how future earthquakes may rupture, and how that relates to the potential impact for faults (断层) near populated areas, ”says Hicks.
These boomerangs maybe obscured by conventional approaches used to analyze quakes, which are based on an assumption that a quake rushes in one direction. “Naturally we’re not looking for it, we don’t expect it to exist,” Hicks says. Yet for earthquakes, it seems, complexities might be the norm rather than the exception. As Hicks puts it: “The more and more we look at earthquakes in more detail, of course we see stranger things.”
21.A boomerang earthquake differs from other quakes because ________.
A.it moves at a super-fast speed
B.it triggers several small quakes
C.it releases immeasurable energy
D.it shakes in two opposite directions
22.From the passage, we can learn that _________.
A.the coming of the next boomerang can be predicted
B.boomerangs are too complex to be fully understood
C.boomerang events are commonplace in the real world
D.common methods are reliable in analyzing boomerangs

Her name was Miss Tippet, but everyone called her Umbrella Lady because, rain or shine, she carried her large umbrella. She always used it to save a cat or carry things. “Always best to be prepared!” Miss Tippet would say.
Today was the day of the town fair. Miss Tippet walked into town when the sun was shining. Her umbrella was bulging (鼓起) with something as usual or even more than usual. Small stands lined the streets. People sold homemade ice cream, hand-made jackets or cotton candy. There were pies, cakes, wooden toys and games to play. What a sunny and beautiful day! By 11: 00, the streets were crowded with people.
At about noon, the sun disappeared. A dark, grey cloud hung over the town. The first big raindrops fell. “We can’t have rain,” the people cried. “Not today.” But when rain wants to fall, it falls! “That’s terrible,” everyone said. “What can be done? Who can lend us umbrellas?” “We’ll have to close down the fair,” announced Mr. White, head of the town. Then, through the rain, a familiar voice was heard. “Umbrellas! Come get an umbrella.” It was Miss Tippet. From her large umbrella, she pulled out an umbrella! Umbrella after umbrella after umbrella! She had enough umbrellas for everyone. “There now,” she said, giving away the very last one. “Let the rain come.”
“Now the fair continues,” announced Mr. White. “Miss Tippet, you have saved the fair with your umbrellas. But how did you know it was going to rain,” “I didn’t,” she said, raising her umbrella over her head. “But it’s always best to be prepared!”

Dave Meko lives in Arizona, southwest of the USA.He noticed that from 1999 to 2001, it was hot and dry. But the year after 2001 was the driest on record. Water levels in the Colorado River were dropping rapidly. This was the beginning of a serious drought. Everyone began asking, “How long will it last?” Meko, a scientist at the University of Arizona, believed that he could find the answer in the trees.
Meko is a tree-ring expert and studies the influence of rainfall on wood layers (层). Each year, a tree adds a new layer of wood. These layers look like a series of rings, which are called tree rings. During times of heavy rainfall, a ring is wide. When there is a shortage of water, a ring is narrow. These rings are nature’s record of rainfall and climate change.
To find out how long earlier droughts lasted, Meko and his team started a new research project. The team collected and tested many wood samples (样本) from 1, 200 years ago until the present. Meko’s new research showed that it was a wet time in Arizona in the 20th century. Trees from this period had wide, healthy rings. Rain was rich. During that century, millions of people moved to the region. Before that time, however, the rings showed that droughts regularly happened. In fact, drought was part of the usual climate pattern.
How long will the current drought last? Experts say it may continue for another 50 years, according to the nature’s clues (线索) from the past. This is a serious problem for people in the area. They will probably not leave the area, but they will need to conserve water during this long dry period.
28.Which year was the driest on record according to the text?
A.1999. B.2000.
C.2001. D.2002.
29.What is the main idea of paragraph 2?

Almost every day, we learn of disasters of one form or another through the media. These include not just major disasters that affect large areas for a long time. A severe storm, an electric power breakdown, or a house fire can bring a personal disaster to an individual. This brochure aims to help you develop your personal preparedness plan.
I. Stockpiling food and drink
• Drinking is more important than eating. Keep about 14 liters of liquid per person in stock for each week.
• No experiments. Your supplies should mainly consist of food and drink that you normally have.
• Ensure that your supplies can be stored for long periods of time without refrigeration and that most of them can be eaten cold.
II. Emergency pack
• The aim of a disaster supplies kit should be to help you to cope with the possibility of having to exist for a few days outside of your house. Don’t take more for each family member than could be conveniently contained within the confines of a rucksack (帆布背包). A rucksack is more practical than a suitcase, as it allows you to have both hands free.
• The emergency rucksack should contain these items:
— First aid materials, personal medication
— Sleeping bag or blanket
— Hygiene products for a couple of days
III. Electric power breakdown
• Keep a supply of torches and candles, as well as spare batteries, matches or lighters in the house. Remember that batteries do not last indefinitely. Regularly use the batteries up and replace them.
• You can prepare smaller meals on a camping stove, one that can be operated through the use of charcoal (木炭) or gas.
IV. Keep up-to-date in an emergency
Floods or heavy snowfalls may lead to parts of the population getting cut off from the outside world. Information and warnings are important for survival. Those who are trapped can often only be reached by radio, television or the Internet. However, television and the Internet only work when there is electric power, which could fail. This leaves just the radio as the main warning device.
V. About us
The Federal Office of Civil Protection and disaster Assistance (BBK) was established in 2004 as a central organizational unit for civil security in Germany. The BBK is your reliable partner for emergency preparedness and self- help. You can find further information on our website.
32.The brochure is provided in order to ________.
A.inform people about recent disasters
B.provide tips on how to survive in a disaster
C.encourage people to stockpile food and drink on a regular basis
D.promote the Federal Office of Civil Protection and disaster Assistance
33.Which of the following descriptions about the rucksack is incorrect?
A.It can conveniently hold the supplies each family member needs for a few days outside.
B.It is less practical than a suitcase in emergency situations.
C.It has an advantage that allows people to keep both hands free.
D.It is used to hold emergency items like first aid materials and sleeping bags.
34.What does the underlined word “indefinitely” probably mean?
A.permanently B.briefly C.carefully. D.suddenly.
35.What is the recommended device to receive warnings during a disaster?
A.A laptop. B.A television.
C.A mobile phone. D.A battery-powered radio.

Fire is a devastating force that can reduce years of memories to ashes in minutes. For high school students, understanding fire safety is not just a school requirement — but a critical life skill. 36 The key lies not in panic, but in prevention, preparation and a clear plan.
37 Most fires can be avoided by maintaining fire-safety consciousness in daily life. Watch out for common dangers like overloaded power strips (排插), unattended cooking, and careless use of candles. 38 These simple devices cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half. Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher can stop a small fire from becoming a catastrophe.
However, when prevention fails, a well-rehearsed escape plan becomes your lifeline. Identify two ways out of every room, usually a door and a window. 39 agree on a specific outdoor meeting place, such as a tree or a lamppost, so that you can quickly account for everyone.
During a fire, seconds count. If the alarm sounds, get out and stay out. Before opening a door, feel it with the back of your hand. If it’s warm, use your second way out. Crawl low under smoke where the air is cleaner and cooler. Breathing in poisonous smoke, not flames, is the leading cause of fire-related deaths. Once outside, call emergency services immediately. 40 .
If you adopt these practices, you will be empowered to convert knowledge into a reliable defense.
A.Never go back inside for any possession.
B.Prevention is always the first line of defense.
C.However, all elevators in high-rise buildings shouldn’t be operated.
D.This awareness allows you to protect not only yourself but also others.
E.Therefore, it is crucial to conduct regular fire drills in your community.
F.Make sure all secondary exits can be operated instantly from the inside.
G.Always ensure smoke alarms are installed and functional on every floor.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In 1994 an 8.2 earthquake hit America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. As soon as the earthquake was over, a father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the unforgettably initial shock, he remembered the promise he had made to his son: “No matter what happens, I`ll always be there for you!” And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless, but he kept remembering his promise to his son.
He began to draw his attention towards where he walked his son to class at school each morning. Remembering his son’s classroom would be in the back right corner of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the ruins.
As he was digging, other helpless parents arrived, with a broken heart, shouting: “My son!” “My daughter!” Other well meaning parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying: “It’s too late! They’re all dead! You can’t help! Go home! Come on, face reality, there’s nothing you can do!”
To each parent he responded with one line: “Are you going to help me now?” And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. The firefighters showed up and tried to pull him off the school’s ruins, saying, “Fires are breaking out, explosions are happening everywhere. You’re in danger. We’ll take care of it. Go home.” However, the father asked, “Are you going to help me now?” The police came and said, “You’re anxious and it’s over. You’re endangering others. Go home. We’ll handle it!” Again, he replied, “Are you going to help me now?” No one helped.

M: I’ve always liked the idea of skiing, but I’ve never done it. Would you recommend it?
W: Definitely! France is one of the best locations in Europe. Italy and Switzerland have some pretty good places to ski too.

The fire started because a large tree fell on the transformer during last night’s storm, and our repair crews are already on the scene working to fix the problem. We estimate that power will be restored by 2 o’clock in the morning, and we ask all residents in the affected areas to follow basic safety rules: use flashlights instead of candles for light, and if you use a generator for power, make sure to use it safely outside your home to avoid gas leaks. Please also minimize opening your refrigerators to keep your food fresh. We will provide updates on the power restoration every hour on our emergency radio frequency, 101.9 FM. We apologize for the inconvenience this outage has caused.

The town, home to one of the world’s most well-known universities, still has large parts underwater and without power. Most of those affected have been relocated to the nearby town of Reading while emergency services continue to try and rescue people stuck in their homes. The Prime Minister thanked the workers for their quick reactions and hard work and promised that more investment would be made in flood defenses. He also said more needed to be done to address the issue of climate change, which many scientific experts have said played a significant part in the flooding. Many celebrities have made donations to the relief effort. However, the weather service has warned that with more heavy rain due tomorrow and for the rest of the week, people should consider leaving the area. We’ll have more on that story as it develops.
第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
The violence of shaking from an earthquake is usually focused in the direction the quake is traveling.
23.What does the underlined phrase “grappling with” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.putting off B.coping with
C.bringing about D.fighting against
根据第一段中“The violence of shaking from an earthquake is usually focused in the direction the quake is traveling. But a boomerang quake may spread the intense shaking across a wider zone. (地震产生的强烈震动通常集中在地震传播的方向上。但回旋镖地震可能会将强烈的震动扩散到更大的区域。)”同时根据第二段中“By examining the position of the epicenter(震中)and the energy released by each shaking phase, Stephen Hicks, an earthquake seismologist at the Imperial College London and first author of the new study, identified what seemed to be two steps of the quake:The quake initially headed eastward, but then turned back west.
根据最后一段中“Yet for earthquakes, it seems, complexities might be the norm rather than the exception. As Hicks puts it: “The more and more we look at earthquakes in more detail, of course we see stranger things.”(然而,对于地震来说,复杂性似乎是常态,而不是例外。正如希克斯所说:“我们对地震的观察越细致,当然就会看到更奇怪的东西。”)”可知,这表明回旋镖地震非常复杂,难以完全理解。故选B。
23.词义猜测题。根据划线词前面的内容“Understanding when and why these boomerang events happen is vital to…(了解这些“回旋镖地震”事件发生的时间和原因对于……)”
B

【答案】32.B 33.B 34.A 35.D

36.根据上文“Fire is a devastating force that can reduce years of memories to ashes in minutes. For high school students, understanding fire safety is not just a school requirement — but a critical life skill.(火是一种极具破坏力的力量,它能在短短几分钟内将数年的回忆化为灰烬。对于高中生来说,了解消防安全知识并非仅仅是学校的要求,而是一项至关重要的生存技能)”以及后文“The key lies not in panic, but in prevention, preparation and a clear plan.(关键不在于恐慌,而在于预防、准备以及制定明确的计划)”可知,空格前句强调火灾安全是关键生活技能,空格后提到关键在于预防、准备和计划。D项“这种意识让你不仅能保护自己,也能保护他人”能很好地连接上下文,说明掌握这些知识和意识的价值。故选D。
37.根据后文“Most fires can be avoided by maintaining fire-safety consciousness in daily life. Watch out for common dangers like overloaded power strips (排插), unattended cooking, and careless use of candles.(大多数火灾都是可以通过在日常生活中保持消防安全意识来避免的。要留意一些常见的危险因素,比如电源插排超负荷使用、无人看管的烹饪行为以及随意使用蜡烛等)”可知,本段后续内容主要围绕如何预防火灾展开,如注意用电安全、安装烟雾报警器等。B项“预防永远是第一道防线”能准确概括本段主旨。故选B。

40.根据上文“During a fire, seconds count. 故选A。

Life will be peaceful if you always do kind things. I teach my daughters to develop a habit of 41 others. The little acts of kindness give you opportunities to provide service for others. They can make you remember how 42 it feels to be kind and helpful.
We live in a rural (乡村的) area. Most of what we 43 is beautiful nature. They will often say to me in a (n) 48 voice, “There’s some rubbish, Daddy — stop the car!” And if we have time, we will often get out of our car and pick it up. 49 it may seem strange, we do it. In fact, we 50 it. We pick up rubbish in parks, on sidewalks, almost anywhere.
One day I saw a stranger picking up rubbish on the road. I stopped. He 51 his head and smiled, “I saw you doing this with your family. It’s a good idea to protect our environment.”
There are many other ways to 52 kindness for others. You may share a dinner with a beggar, visit 53 old people in the nursing home, or help the blind 54 the street. Campus Earthquake Drill
Last Friday, our school held an earthquake drill to raise safety awareness and improve emergency response skills.
When the alarm sounded, teachers and students first sheltered under their desks, then evacuated to the playground in an orderly manner, with their hands covering their heads. Shortly afterwards, experts shared earthquake safety information and demonstrated self-rescue techniques. The drill turned theoretical knowledge into life-saving practice, making every participant more prepared and confident.
Students said the experience was very meaningful, as it helped ease earthquake-related anxiety and turned safety tips into muscle memory.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 2:
Everyone began to help him pull the kids out of the ruins.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
The father went on alone because he needed to know for himself: “Is my boy alive or is he dead?” He dug for eight hours...12 hours...24 hours...36 hours...Then, in the 38th hour, he pulled back a large stone and heard his son’s voice. After screaming his son’s name, “ARMAND!” he heard back, “Dad?! It’s me, Dad!” The faint but familiar voice brought tears of relief to his eyes. “What’s going on in there? How is it?” the father asked anxiously, digging more forcefully with his bare hands. “I’m fine. There are 13 other kids down here, Dad,” Daniel replied. “We’re scared, hungry, and thirsty. When the building collapsed, it made a triangle and saved us.” The father realized that this was a tricky situation. He couldn’t risk causing another collapse down there. Fortunately, the firefighters were just nearby. The father shouted to the fire chief and signalled to them to come over.
Paragraph 2:
Everyone began to help him pull the kids out of the ruins. Then, the father helped the firefighters cautiously remove the rocks and pulled out the kids one by one. When everyone was safe and sound, Daniel threw himself into his father’s arms: “You did it, Dad! No matter what, I know you’ll be there for me!”

23.What does the underlined phrase “grappling with” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.putting off B.coping with
C.bringing about D.fighting against

A.1999. B.2000.
C.2001. D.2002.

A.it was a wet time B.it was a dry time
C.trees had narrow rings D.floods seldom happened
31.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The wood sample. B.The current drought.
C.The research project. D.The nature’s record.
