Time magazine listed its top inventions of
2019,some of which will surely become a big
part of our everyday lives over the next
decade. Here are some we're most looking for-
ward to.
●Virtual surgery
According to Harvard Business Review,
our current system of training surgeons can't
keep up with the speed of technological deve-
lopment."Even after 4 years of college,4
years of medical school and 5 years of
advanced training after working,30%of
graduates still can't operate on their own,
said Justin Barad, who is the CEO and co-
founder of Osso VR.
They create software to give doctors the
virtual operating room experience so they can
practice and prepare for surgery.Apparently,it
works.Dr.Gideon Blumstein conducted a
study on using Osso VR.His team found that
participants'overall surgical performance
improved by an astonishing 230%over
traditional training methods.
●Vending veggies(出售素食)
“Eat happier.”That's the Farmer's Fridge
advertising message.It is a good one,as this
company wants to bring fresh, healthy food to
people.
It's trying to change more than just food,
though. It also wants to change the delivery
method.Farmer's Fridge has created its very
own automatic machines. They can be placed
in high-traffic areas.These super-smart vending
machines can know their contents at any
moment, and can allow customers to reserve
things and pay in advance. They can even
learn about what customers want.Shayna
Harris is the company's Chief Growth Officer.
"We have developed salads,sandwiches and
breakfast items that taste as fresh as if you
just made them in your home kitchen, she
said in an interview with Insider Trends.
●Recycling pollution

by burning coal or oil.Cars are machines that
produce soot.To collect the soot,Anirudh
Sharma,creator of AIR-INK,made a device
called Kaalink, which is attached to a
vehicle's exhaust pipe(排气管).Once
collected,it's made into ink colour and mixed
with vegetable oil to create inks, markers and
paints with the brand AIR-INK.
"I don't know if it's pollution,but the
quality of the ink is really special,"said artist
Kristopher Ho."It's black,really thick and
dries extremely quickly."
The Guardian describes AIR-INK as
“remarkably green”.Each30-milliliter pen
contains between 40-50 minutes of air pollu-
tion,while each 6-liter spray can hold 2,000
minutes of diesel exhaust(柴油废气).In the
past year,Sharma said, his team has cleaned
nearly 1.7 trillion liters of air in India and
Hong Kong.
21.What can be known about Osso VR?
A.It is an assistant to help surgeons do
operations.
B.It can perform operations on patients
automatically.
C.It offers doctors a virtual environment
to practice surgery.
D.It is a piece of software to help medical
students do research.
22.What makes Farmer's Fridge different and

About 4 million children worldwide deve-
lop asthma each year because of nitrogen
dioxide air pollution, according to a study
published today by researchers at the George
Washington University.The study estimates
that 64 percent of these new cases of asthma
occur in urban areas. The study is the first to
quantify the worldwide burden of new
pediatric(儿科的)asthma cases linked to
traffic-related nitrogen dioxide by using a
method that takes into account high exposures
to this pollutant that occur near busy roads,
said Susan C.Anenberg,PhD,the senior
author of the study.
"Our findings suggest that millions of
new cases of pediatric asthma could be
prevented in cities around the world by
reducing air pollution,"said Anenberg.
"Improving access to cleaner forms of trans-
portation,like electrified public transport,
54
cycling and walking, would not only bring
down NO2 levels, but would also reduce
asthma,enhance physical fitness,and cut
greenhouse gas emissions."
Asthma is a disease that makes it hard to
breathe and results when the lung's airways
are inflamed. An estimated 235 million people
worldwide currently have asthma,which can
cause wheezing as well as life-threatening
attacks.
The World Health Organization calls air
pollution "a major environmental risk to
health"and has established Air Quality
Guidelines for NO2 and other air pollutants.
The researchers estimate that most children
lived in areas below the current NO2 guideline.
They also found that about 92 percent of the
new pediatric asthma cases that were caused
by NO2 occurred in areas that already meet the
WHO guideline.
"That finding suggests that the WHO
guideline for NO2 may need to be re-evaluated
to make sure it is sufficiently protective of
children's health,"said Pattanun Achakulwisut,
PhD,lead author of the paper.
Additional research must be done to more
persuasively identify the factors leading to
asthma within complex traffic emissions.This
effort will help to improve the estimates of
new asthma cases tied to traffic emissions.
24.According to the study, how should the
new cases of pediatric asthma be stopped?
A.Invent new drug.
B.Cut air pollution.
C.Raise people's awareness.
D.Reduce electrified public transport.
25.What does the underlined word in Para-
graph 3 mean?
A.Struck.
B.Enlarged.
C.Swollen.
D.Broken.
26.What do we know about the Air Quality
Guidelines of WHO?
A.The Air Quality Guidelines are not
reasonable
B.WHO established Air Quality Guidelines
only for NO2.
C.The minority of children's living envi-
ronment meet the current WHO
guidelines.
D.According to the guidelines,92 percent
of the new pediatric asthma cases are
caused by NO2.
27.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Asthma is threatening children's life.
B.WHO established Air Quality Guidelines.
C.Air pollution is a serious problem nowa-
days.
D.Air pollution makes children suffer from
asthma.

When the explorers first set foot upon the
continent of North America, the skies and
lands were alive with an astonishing variety of
wildlife.Native Americans had taken care of
these precious natural resources wisely.
Unfortunately,it took the explorers and the
Unt6单元测试卷。
settlers who followed only a few decades to
decimate a large part of these resources.
Millions of waterfowl(水禽)were killed at
the hands of market hunters and a handful of
overly ambitious sportsmen.Millions of acres
of wetlands were dried to feed and house the
ever-increasing populations,greatly reducing
waterfowl habitat.
In 1934,with the passage of the Migratory
Bird Hunting Stamp Act (Act),an increas-
ingly concerned nation took firm action to stop
the destruction of migratory(迁徙的)water-
fowl and the wetlands so vital to their
survival.Under this Act,all waterfowl hunters
16 years of age and over must annually
purchase and carry a Federal Duck Stamp. The
very first Federal Duck Stamp was designed
by J.N."Ding"Darling,a political cartoonist
from Des Moines, lowa, who at that time was
appointed as Director of the Bureau of
Biological Survey.Hunters willingly pay the
stamp price to ensure the survival of our
natural resources.
About 98 cents of every duck stamp
dollar goes directly into the Migratory Bird
Conservation Fund to purchase wetlands and
wildlife habitat for inclusion into the National
Wildlife Refuge System-a fact that ensures
this land will be protected and available for all
generations to come.Since 1934,better than
half a billion dollars has gone into that Fund
to purchase more than 5 million acres of
habitat.Little wonder the Federal Duck Stamp

Dogs may help save the day in the
Philippines,as they use their noses to smell
out survivors buried by Friday's mudslide
石流).The team of dogs arrived in the
Philippines from Spain, and this Tuesday they
were just beginning their work.Search
officials told CNN they hope the recent rain
56
will wash away the smell of rescue teams so
the dogs can do their job more accurately.
The dogs were brought in after sound
equipment found sounds coming from deep
inside the ruins,at a place where a school
stood before the mudslide covered it.The
sounds could mean people are still alive under
all the mud or it could just be the earth
resettling.
On Monday,rescue workers worked at
the school site until three in the morning,
trying to locate survivors, and they will begin
digging again as soon as the dogs think they
find someone.
Human teams from the US,Malaysia,and
Australia are all trying to help, too. But so far
they have yet to locate any survivors.Rescue
workers told CNN that an earlier report that
50 survivors had been found was false.
How did all that mud bury the village in
the first place?On Friday,2,400-foot Mt
Kanabag turned into a mudslide after two
weeks of constant rain weakened it.The
mountain crumbled and the mud fell onto the
village Guinsaugon,burying the 1,800 people
who lived there.Out of the 300 houses in the
village, only 3 were not covered by the mud.
The village is on a southern Philippine island
called Leyte.Rescue efforts have been
difficult because the village takes six hours to
reach from the nearest airport.Hopefully,the
dogs can help their human friends find
survivors.
32.According to the search officials'words in
the first paragraph,we can learn that
A.the smell of rescue teams can disturb
the dogs
B.the dogs can follow the smell of rescue
teams
C.the dogs can't smell the rescue teams
D.the dogs can tell the smells of buried
people and rescue teams apart
33.The main purpose of this passage is pro-
bably
A.to show the way to rescue the victims
in the ruins
B.to introduce the instruments to save
victims in a disaster
C.to tell readers that dogs can smell out
victims buried in the ruins
D.to show how to train dogs to save
victims in a mudslide
34.How many survivors have been found
by the dogs?
A.50.
B.Only a few.
C.1,800.
D.None.
35.The reason why the rescue work wasn't
going smoothly was probably that
A.the rain was heavy
B.so many people were buried
C.it was difficult to reach the village
D.there is little chance to save the survi-

I went up to the roof for a break after
studying for an hour and watched the 50 or so
people swimming in the natural rock pool
below our house. It was a sunny day-a blue,
cloudless sky over a calm sea.But then,as I
looked in the distance,I discovered three or
four big waves heading towards the shore.I'd
seen these mini-tsunamis(海啸)many times
before. They were heading at speed in the
direction of the pool. Most people knew how
to look out for them, but from the screams
that started coming from the beach,I could
tell someone was in trouble.
Without thinking,I ran down into the
street,,holding my body board(俯伏冲浪板)
on the way and shouted at a stranger to go
inside my house and call the coastguard. My
neighbor Moises had heard the screaming as
well and was also outside with his body board,
so together we rushed to the steps that led
down to the sea.
Once we got closer,we discovered the
waves had pulled a boy and a girl from the
pool and into the open sea.I knew that the
nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to
reach us.Waiting for help wasn't a choice.I
60
wasn't used to this sort of emergency-I'd
never been trained as a lifeguard-but I didn't
think twice about trying to save them.I
supposed in a way I wanted to impress every-
one:at 19,a deal like that can seem like a
good opportunity to show off.
Moises and I dived into the water and it
took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we
finally reached them, they were almost lifeless
with only their heads coming in and out of the
water. We could tell they were still alive from
their small breaths but it was clear they
wouldn't have been able to stay there much
longer.I held the boy and pulled him over my
board.Moises moved the girl onto his board.
We discussed pushing them back to the shore,
but we were too far out.

make an announcement today.Of course, our big game is
this weekend, and a lot of you-well,I hope all of you-
are looking forward to it.Anyway,I want to tell you my
favourite quote, one that I heard when I was in school.
"Education is what remains after one has forgotten what
one has learned in school."This phrase is from a really
smart guy,Albert Einstein. In my job,I work with athletes,
but I always tell them not to forget their studies,too.Ap-
preciate these days that you have to study and learn. That's
what school is about.Make the most of it.Have fun with
your friends,be sociable at get-togethers,go to football
games...But just be sure to get your homework done and
listen and participate in class. You've headed for bigger
and better things. Some say college is a waste of time, but
I don't think so.There are things you learn in the process
of learning that are priceless. There's an education that
goes on beyond what we read in textbooks and listen to in
lectures.Life is one big educational process.And that's
what Einstein was trying to say.Have a great day!

第一节(满分15分)
Dear Chris,
I'm quite delighted to hear that you are participating
in the Chinese poem recitation contest. The poem you choose
is an ancient one, which ought to be a real challenge.
The poem, written by Meng Jiao,is called Song of the
Parting Son.It's about the deep love between the poet and
his mother. The poem mainly describes a scene in which a
mother is making clothes for her son who is leaving home
to fulfill his ambition. With each stitch she makes, the
mother conveys her deep love for her son and her profound
concern that he may return late. The poem expresses his
thoughts using similes, concluding that "a mother's love is
like the sunshine to the grass".
With its rich emotion and depth, this poem is a good
choice for your contest.I wish you break a leg in the contest!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
We had to wait, eagerly hoping for the arrival of the
saving boat. The wild wind blew and the freezing sea water
clapped our bodies continuously.30 minutes seemed much
longer as we just helplessly floated on the boundless sea.
After a long time,a light spot appeared in the distance! We
waved our hands and yelled out for help. The boat finally
reached us and took all of us back to the shore. The two
children were immediately sent to the nearest hospital.
Paragraph 2:
That night, word came from the hospital that the two
people were in good condition.Picturing what the merry
scene would be,relief lay in my heart and happiness etched
on my face. The next morning, all the people I met smiled
to me and could not stop praising me.It seemed like a
good opportunity to show myself off,but I didn't mean to
In fact,I was ashamed I had thought about it.It occurred
to me that helping others was priceless and everyone
should be a lifeguard.

look really closely to see that's not a photo or something
real.It's a great exhibition.
