Aids: Sample speech script, Mind map templates, Pictures of Chinatowns.
V. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Planning (Pre-writing)
Analyze the Model (Part D2): Read Simon’s speech.
1. Identify structure: Greeting -> Idea (“Collect and share”) -> Details (Books, Toys, Clothes) -> Goal (Raise money) -> Call to action.
2. Highlight useful expressions: I’d like to share..., We’re going to..., Let’s work together.
3. Brainstorm: What can you do? (e.g., Green Garden, Elderly Care, Reading Corner).
4. Steps: What will you collect? Who will you help? How will you raise funds?
Step 2: Drafting (While-writing)
Students write their speech script individually.
Teacher Support: Circulate to help with sentence variety and logical connectors.
Requirement: Must include at least two future tense forms and one phrase about raising money or sharing.
Step 3: Further Study & Sublimation
Global Perspective: Read the “Further Study” section about Chinatowns.
1. Discuss: Why do Chinese people build communities overseas? (Support, culture, belonging).
2. Connection: How is a Chinatown similar to our local community? (Mutual help, shared culture).
3. Integration: Ask students to add one sentence to their speech connecting their local action to a broader value (e.g., “Just like in Chinatowns around the world, we build our home through love and sharing.”). This addresses Cultural Awareness and Thinking Quality.
Step 4: Revising & Presentation
Peer Review: Swap scripts. Check for: Clear structure? Correct grammar? Inspiring ending?
Speech Delivery: Select 3 students to deliver their speeches to the class.
Assessment: Students complete the self-assessment table (Page 29) honestly.
VI. Homework
Polish the speech script and record a video of delivering it.
Research one famous Chinatown (e.g., San Francisco, London) and write 3 sentences about what makes it special.
Reflection: Write one sentence on “My Action Plan” to improve our class community this week.
VII. Blackboard Design
Structure:
1. Greeting: Hello everyone...
2. Purpose: I want to organize...
3. Details (First/Second/Last):
